I’m so excited to share everything that’s been happening over the last few months. I will
begin with the most obvious, our new home for the shop and soon to be offices at 295 N.
Lindbergh in Creve Coeur, the old Jos. A. Bank Bldg. and before that Hopper Furs. Acquiring
the building took over two years of searching for a place that would meet our needs
To share a little history, back in 2008 when I was VP of Retail, I assembled a Resale Shop
Task Force to examine the options for the future of the shop since our lease on Olive was
up for renewal in May of 2010. The task force examined all of our options for the future
including staying at the current location, moving the shop, moving the shop and office together
and closing the shop. At the June 2009 Board meeting I reported that the Task force
recommended that the office and shop be combined and moved to a new location when our
shop lease came up for renewal in 2010. The Board voted in favor of the recommendation
and Sally Katzif, President at the time, Ellen Alper and I started looking for locations, with Bob
Walpert as our Broker. We looked at over 30 locations and fell in love with the Banks location,
which was one of the first we had seen. As soon as we walked in we really liked what we saw.
But just as you shop for a new dress for a specific event, you can’t get the first thing you try
on!
You have to look some more and make sure you don’t miss anything else out there. So we
looked more, but that building just spoke us; it’s like it was built for NCJW. So after looking
and talking about it, we decided to have an open house for the Board to check it out. Everyone
that came through loved the idea of having the office and shop together. The room for storage
for BTSS in the basement and having furniture sales there was great. We presented a Letter of Intent
to lease the building, but could not come to an agreement on the terms. We decided to sign for one
more year in the current location in order to have more time to explore our options.
Remember, this was 2009-2010, the economy had tanked and commercial property was available
all over at some good rates. During this time of looking for the “perfect dress” we came upon a great
property on Brentwood, not big enough for the office, but a great location. We agreed upon a lease
and the landlord changed his mind and walked away from the deal. That deal falling through really
opened our eyes about how hard it was going to be to find a place to lease for our shop. The places
that had spaces that were big enough for us, for the shop and office, were not in great areas or were
expensive. Several complexes did not want resale shops in their centers. And, our own landlord
wanted us to move from our current space to a new storefront in the same center, but couldn’t give
us a lease yet because they didn’t even know what space would be available.
Because of issues in our current location, we decided to look at the Banks location again. The
building was under contract but we decided, on the advice of our broker, to submit a backup contract
for a lease purchase. After reviewing the numbers, it was clear the better economic decision for the
section would be to purchase the building. Our current Landlord had already agreed to a monthto-month lease since they weren’t sure who was coming into their center. On August 2, 2011 to be
exact, for historical purposes, I called a special Executive Team meeting and right after that we went
into a special Board meeting to discuss the potential purchase of the building. It was an interesting
meeting to say the least, we really had never talked about buying a building but this had the potential
to be a great investment for us long-term. We talked a lot with every board member getting a chance
to express their opinions or thoughts. A motion was made by VP of Retail Jill Gubin, to present a
contract to purchase and it passed almost unanimously. There was a nervous excitement in the room,
realizing what we had just done for NCJW and the future of the organization. It was very exciting!
Now we just had to wait and hope our contract would be accepted.
As soon as the owner received it, they bumped the other contract and accepted ours, and with
a few back and forth changes we had a deal!! And with that we set to work to inspect the building,
get bids and draw up plans for the office area and start planning our marketing of the possible new
location. With the inspections done and passed, the City of Creve Coeur giving us an OK, the bids
for build out of the offices coming in within our price range and our financing coming through like
we had hoped, we closed on our new home on September 23, 2011 at 10:00 am. Ellen Alper our

Executive Director, Gail Eisenkramer our Recording Secretary, Jerry
Pratter, our Real Estate Attorney who advised us pro-bono and I
were present at the closing. Myles Hopper and his wife had flown in
from Wisconsin for the closing. It was quite an emotional moment
signing all the documents as the representative for NCJW. It was
also very emotional for Mr. Hopper as well. We spoke about the fact
that his mother was a member of NCJW and both of his parents
supported NCJW. He was really happy that we were the ones who
ended up with the building and that “good things” would be done
from this property.
It took a couple of years for us to get to this place to purchase
this particular building, but we had to do our due diligence and make
sure we were making the right move for the organization. Myles and
I said to each other, “It’s bashert, it’s just meant to be.” Just as the
new dress was still hanging on the rack, the first one you had tried
on, our new home was still waiting for its new family, and we are
extremely happy to move right on in!!!
I would really like to thank Ellen Alper, our Executive Director
for doing an amazing amount of great work on this process, from
when we started getting our contract together until now and into
the future.
A huge thanks goes to Bob Walpert, for schlepping us around
the city looking for property for the past two years. Thanks also
to Jerry Pratter, our Real Estate Attorney who read the contracts,
calmed our nerves at times and gave us great advice at all times of
the day and did it ALL as a volunteer.
Thank you to our Building Committee, Nancy Siteman, Irene
Fowle, Marlene Hammerman, Liz Kruvand and all the volunteers
and staff who are working with me to make the many decisions
concerning the building.

Leadership is that ingredient in any organization that is
sometimes difficult to define. There aren’t causes, events or
fundraisers that attract media attention, new members or potential
funders. What can be found are quiet, behind-the-scenes efforts that
provide the infrastructure of an organization to help it run more
effectively.
The Leadership Development department has been operational
for a couple of years now and has quietly been working behind the
scenes on the following:
• Studying The Source, a board source document, to
move the St. Louis Section Board from a good to an
exceptional Board
• Revamping the structure and flow of Board and
Executive Team meetings
• Improving officer reports
• Conducting more frequent Board planning retreats
• Revamping and updating Board by-laws and policies; and
• Developing a targeted three-year Strategic Plan.

BRAVO ST. LOUIS!
he Section graduated its inaugural Leadership Program

in May at the Board Installation. Ten outstanding women
had training in leadership skills valuable in the personal,
professional and volunteer arenas, gained awareness of NCJW
and its place in the broader St. Louis community and prepared
for future NCJW leadership roles. The program was a mix of
skill building, personal exploration, readings, hands-on work
and exposure to key persons from the St. Louis community.
This is unique in NCJW as St. Louis becomes the first Section
to pilot a leadership training program.There will be a second
Leadership Program which will run from October, 2012-March,
2013. Applications will be available in April 2012.

as part of a Missouri-based coalition concerned with
federal budget issues on behalf of the national SAVE for

THE HUNT FOR LOST TREASURE
Bring a lunch and hear NCJW Member and
author Linda Frank discuss how history ignited
her first novel, After the Auction. Linda Frank
creates a well-researched exploration about a
woman’s search for family treasure stolen by the
Nazis. Lunch & Learn introduces the community
to interesting speakers and perspectives that
transforms an ordinary lunch into an engaged and
connected afternoon.

The Sheraton Clayton Plaza has completed a successful transition of a Kosher
kitchen. If any NCJW member hosts a Jewish life cycle event at the hotel, they
can designate NCJW to receive 5% of the gross billing as a charitable contribution
from the hotel. The 5% charitable contribution is valid for any functions that sign
an agreement with the hotel by December 31, 2011 and the event is to take place
at the Sheraton Clayton no later than June 30, 2012. Contact Bridget McCracken

Microlending Advisory Committee meeting at the NCJW offices.
Higher Ground is NCJW’s national campaign focusing on
domestic violence and women’s financial security that works to end
domestic violence by improving the economic status of women.
The St. Louis Section, in collaboration with Lydia’s House, has put
into action a program called “Microlending”. Working with Lydia’s
House, women will have access to borrow sums up to $500 to help
domestic violence survivors move toward financial independence
with small loans for items such as car payments, transportation,
clothing and education.
Operated by NCJW via a grant from the Incarnate Word
Foundation, the program is led by Executive Director, Bridget Flood
and a core group of women from Lydia’s House who will determine
such details as loan eligibility and granting, application forms and
payback schedules. In addition, they will be required to take a
financial education class and learn how to transition to a commercial
bank as they move into independent living.
This project has the advantage of a strong community Advisory
Board which includes legislators, commercial bankers, clergy and an
array of leaders from various sectors.

payday lending, women’s reproductive health and workplace
protections for survivors of domestic violence. Pictured

COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORT

I am thrilled to announce that two of our section’s signature
projects, Back to School! Store and Kids Community Closet have
now joined forces in order to strengthen both projects. You will
soon see both logos together on some brochures, letterhead,
and signage in our community. Kids Community Closet plans to
install a new closet in another St. Louis Public School this fall at
Shaw School, bringing the total number of closets to nine! We are
looking for people interested in becoming school liaisons for the

I hope you will make plans to be a part of the Jewish and
Muslim Day of Service on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25th,
co-sponsored by NCJW, the Jewish Community Relations Council
(JCRC) and the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis. The sites
for volunteers are being finalized and the registration form will
be available on-line later this fall. There will be a range of service
opportunities available that day, including projects suitable for
young children, projects that involve going out into the community

OACAP meetings are held at Crown

Weinberg Lounge at 10:00 AM. OACAP
is a program of the National Council
of Jewish Women. The general public,

single largest source of revenue for the St. Louis Section, TheResaleShop
enables us to operate and fund the many NCJW programs for women, children
and families in the St. Louis community.
Every time you donate, shop or volunteer, it impacts the success of NCJW’s
St. Louis Section. We rely on the ongoing commitment from our membership
to make this section a vibrant, relevant resource in St. Louis.
New merchandise comes in every day and we accept donations
continuously during regular store hours: Mon.-Wed.-Fri.: 10-6, Tues.-Thurs.
10-7 and Sat. 10-5. Although the process sounds simple, it takes a lot to turn
those donations into profits and we need your help to keep our good works going.

NCJW’S JEAN STEIN BLOCH FUND
HELPS WIDOWS SUPPORT GROUP
As a widow who experienced multiple tragedies,
Jean Stein Bloch chose to start over in St. Louis near her
brother Nardie Stein, his wife Sally, and other relatives.
Knowing the pain caused by grief, the Steins urged Jean
to join the NCJW
Wife-WidowWoman (W-W-W)
program – a move
which made all
the difference in
Jean’s life. The
group provided
an opportunity
for W-W-W
participants to
establish deep
and enduring
relationships. Her
appreciation of the
program and the
insightful support
she received led
Jean Stein Bloch
Jean to volunteer as
a leader in subsequent W-W-W groups. For many years,
Jean was able to help many women facing the challenges
of painful loss.
Jean Stein died of natural causes in 1997. However, in her
memory Nardie and Sally continue to honor their sister
by providing significant annual support for this unique and
helpful program with the hope that other women will
benefit from the comfort this program offers. We thank
the Steins for their ongoing support of this important
program for women in our community and encourage
others to reach out in support of the Wife-WidowWomen program.
CELEBRATING WOMEN – NCJW Bestows the
Prestigious Hannah G. Solomon Founder’s Award
to Frankie Muse Freeman and Senator Joan Bray
The Hannah G. Solomon Founder’s Award will be presented at
Celebrating Women, NCJW’s premier event on Thursday, November 3
at Neiman Marcus, Plaza Frontenac (Second Level) between 5:30-7:30PM
for an Hors D’Oeuvre Reception. Frankie Muse Freeman and Senator Joan
Bray are two incredible women who have empowered the community with
their unique voices in support of women, children and families.
Although recipients do not have to be NCJW members, Jewish, or
female, Hannah G. Solomon Award recipients must fulfill one or more of
the following criteria:
• Exemplify the NCJW mission of improving the quality of life for women,
children and families.
• Expand and promote the status of women in vital areas of community life.
• Work to ensure and advance individual and civil rights.
• Provide leadership that has motivated others to fight for progress and
enlightenment in our community.
“NCJW is proud to honor Frankie Muse Freeman and Senator Joan
Bray,” says NCJW’s Sally Katzif, co-chair of the Celebrating Women
event. “These dynamic women have demonstrated a commitment to public
service and their work has been in concert with the NCJW mission of
supporting women, children, and families in protecting individual and civil
rights.”

NATIONAL COUNCIL OF JEWISH WOMEN CEO VISITS
ST. LOUIS SECTION

Nancy Kaufman, the new CEO of National
Council of Jewish Women arrived in St. Louis on
September 21 to spend a few days with the St.
Louis Section. Nancy works out of the New York
office and took over in January of 2011. Since then
she has been visiting different sections around the
country to meet the many members. We were
very excited to have Nancy with us. She is originally
from Boston and worked for the JCRC in Boston

for over 20 years. Nancy is very familiar with St.
Kaufman with President Farilyn Hale and
Louis because her daughter went to Washington

with past presidents, hosted by Karen Kalish, a
friend of Nancy’s. She spoke about how she came to NCJW, her goals and vision for
the organization. The St. Louis Section wishes to thank Karen Kalish for

Project HEART is a
comprehensive archive
of Jewish Holocaust
information containing
more than 1.5 million
records of victim’s
assets in a searchable,
user-friendly online
database first posted on May 1, 2011.
Executive Director, Bobby Brown, stated that the addition
of approximately one million records since the database began
demonstrates Project HEART’s commitment to list every
piece of private property for which the Jewish people declare
they never received compensation.

restitution for lost property assets during the Holocaust era at

The 2011 Back-To-School! Store™ (BTSS) project on July 24 was a tremendous success. Thank you to donors and volunteers for helping
to make this our largest community service project serving over 1000 school-aged kids in the St. Louis area! The event involved the support
and partnership from hundreds of individuals, organizations and foundations and was able get school supplies into the hands of those who
needed them to start the school year on a positive note.
