New friendships I was admitted to the Obstetrics program at the Universidade de São Paulo via an agreement between Brazil and my home country, Cape Verde, under the auspices of the Program for Partner Undergraduate Students. Our first days of classes were great, because we were the first and only Africans from Cape Verde to come to study at USP/EACH (School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities). Everyone was curious to meet us and to learn about life in our country. I ended up meeting most of the students in the college, and they were all really cool, receptive, nice and friendly. Jassira Maria Ortet Fernandes Cape Verdean Student was admitted to USP via the Program for Partner Undergraduate Students (PEC-G) Enjoy your exchange program to the max, you won’t regret it. Culture and Diversity I have been studying anthropology for two semesters at USP as an exchange student. Studying and living here has changed the way I see Brazil. I liked the univversity from the very beginning and here I have the opportunity to interact with people of different nationalities, allowing me to acquire new knowledge and broaden my worldview. Markets on weekends, “sambas” that take place in the city, great parties, exhibitions, displays… São Paulo is a city where you always find something going on, there’s always something to do, you just have to stay tuned in. Founded in 1934, USP is a public state institution (it does not charge tuition fees) and has campi placed in eight cities spread throughout the state of São Paulo. With education and research activities in all academic fields, USP offers 249 undergraduate programs, 239 graduate programs (both Master's and Doctoral (PhD) degrees) and 993 extracurricular programs. In total, there are about 90,000 students enrolled in 48 Schools (faculties and institutes) which make up USP. Furthermore, the university houses four important museums which receive over 600,000 visitors per year. In addition, USP runs health centers and two major hospitals. It also works in partnership with Hospital das Clínicas of Ribeirão Preto and Hospital das Clínicas of São Paulo, the latter considered one of the leading hospitals in Latin America. Over 86% of the approximately 5,900 teachers are full time employees. This reinforces the university’s commitment to achieving excellence in terms of its personnel and of generation of knowledge. 2013 - Produced and edited by Communications Area / USP International Office 5 USP’s scientific productivity totals an average of 27,500 publications per year, including indexed scientific journals, books, reports etc. This represents a significant proportion of the country’s output. The university is also concerned with the application of the discoveries made by its research centers and laboratories, as well as with the effective transfer of these findings to society in general. For this reason many members of the USP community are in permanent partnership with industries, companies, offices and health centers specialized in the development of projects and products and in the practical application of new technologies and products. Eastern USP (USP Leste) São Carlos campus building The university also plays an important role in South America, since it attracts many students, professors and technicians from the neighboring countries and from all parts of the world. USP is an institution that evolves rapidly in its intent towards greater internationalization, which has been accompanied by its ever growing visibility on the world stage. It has signed over 800 cooperation and exchange agreements with important institutions in the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, and is constantly working towards increasing this number. The university currently welcomes about 2,000 undergraduate and graduate foreign students per year and sends abroad an even bigger number as part of its student mobility program. It is a medium sized town, with about 360,000 inhabitants* , and it is strategically located at the confluence of important roads and rail connections, making Bauru’s economy one of the most influential in Western São Paulo state. Its valuable historical heritage, along with its notable level of scientific enterprise and the large student population (around 25,000) lead to a busy social and cultural life, and ensure that Bauru is, above all, a town headed towards the future. Nowadays, with over 605,000 people*, Ribeirão Preto is considered an attractive option for business enterprises, besides being an economic highlight in its region. Subsequently, the changing economy forced modernization and with it came the need to invest in new infrastructure. This, allied to the abundant immigrant workforce (mostly Italians), led to the industrialization of the city. São Carlos, which has become known for pioneering innovation and an enterprising spirit, came to possess a well-developed urban infrastructure before many other Brazilian cities. Thus São Carlos has turned into one of the most representative economies of its region and also a Brazilian landmark in terms of technology and education. The International Office is responsible for all aspects of the university’s international affairs. Here, foreign students will get the necessary support to solve their main doubts about academic life and also tips regarding the process of adaptation to our university and country. Besides the central International Office, most schools have local international offices. Further information: http://www.usp.br/internationaloffice/ Exchange students 2013 - Produced and edited by Communications Area / USP International Office 31 Programs offered to foreign undergraduate students Admission as a regular student 1 Admission Test (“Vestibular”) The admission test - “Vestibular” - is organized every year by Fundação Universitária para o Vestibular (FUVEST). This admission process happens via preselection and specific examinations, both applied by FUVEST. Further information can be found at: <http://www.fuvest.br/tran2014/transf.stm> 3 Program for Partner Undergraduate Students (PEC-G) This is a cooperation program between Brazil and countries which Brazil maintains educational and cultural agreements with (especially from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean). Foreign students interested in applying to a graduate program via PEC-PG must get in touch directly with the School where they wish to study, in order to be informed of the necessary documents and procedures for that specific School. Applicants must send the following basic documents: • A copy of the student’s transcript, diploma and Birth Certificate, all duly recognized by the Brazilian Embassy • Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language for Foreigners (CELPE-Bras) • A copy of the curriculum in Portuguese • Two reference letters and a Research Project or Study Plan (according to the models found in the PEG-PG Manual) • Acceptance letter issued by USP on one of its Graduate Degree Programs (Masters or PhD) For more information, please go to: <http://www.dce.mre.gov.br/>. It is not possible for a foreign student to enroll at USP holding a tourist visa, nor is it possible to change the type of visa once already in Brazil or a neighboring country. Under such circumstances, should the need arise to change the type of visa, it will be necessary for the student to return to his/her home country. 2013 - Produced and edited by Communications Area / USP International Office 34 Health Insurance During his/her stay in Brazil, the foreigner will be allowed to use the services of the Brazilian Public Health System only in case of emergency. For this reason, Universidade de São Paulo demands that students obtain health insurance (travel insurance), which should be purchased in their home country prior to their arrival in Brazil. The insurance policy must be valid for the entire period of intended stay in the country. The choice of a specific travel insurance or another is the students responsibility. After arrival Once in Brazil, the foreign student must present himself/herself to the USP International Office in order to be introduced to the university and receive instructions about the necessary procedures. The International Office staff will provide information about: • RNE - Foreigners National Registration – mandatory registration and identification of any foreigner in Brazil. The associated document is issued by the Federal Police with whom all visitors should register within 30 days of arrival in the country; • USP ID card; • Portuguese course enrollment; • Signing up for classes; • Student Single Transportation Card (“Bilhete Único Estudantil”) , through the USP Superintendence for Social Assistance (SAS); • Homestay Program Important!
