Heart, moHvaHons, beliefs If any kind of obedience, regardless of what mo7vates it, is what God is a:er, he would have showcased the Pharisees and exhorted all of us to follow their lead, to imitate them. But he didn’t. Jesus called them “whitewashed tombs”-­‐
clean on the outside, dead on the inside. They had been successful in achieving “behavioris7c righteousness” and thought that’s what maFered most to God.
