Denville Recreation The Rec Room Volume 11 Issue 1 Spring 2010 Senior Social Important Safety Tip! Working Smoke Detectors save lives. Please check your smoke alarm’s batteries on a regular basis. The life you save may be your own. Denville Fire Dept. The Sunday Senior Socials will be held at the Church of the Saviour, 155 Morris Avenue, in Denville, from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. The social is sponsored by the Denville Recreation Committee and is open to all seniors 55 and older and is free of charge. The social offers a Sunday afternoon of fellowship, dancing, and lunch. Seniors, come out to an enjoyable Sunday afternoon. You do not have to dance to attend this function. There is ample parking and the facility is handicapped accessible. 2010 Spring Dates: April 18th, May 16th and June 27th. Dates for the Fall Senior Social will be posted in the Summer edition of the Rec Room. This program is different from the PreK division. Munchkins play on Wednesday at 1pm and Saturday afternoons (time TBA). The cost of the Munchkin program is $70 per player. Registration will also be available in the Recreation Office starting Monday April 12th. Cash and checks will be accepted, sorry no credit cards will be accepted. No refunds once tickets are purchased or supplies have been ordered. Sorry no exceptions. Trips and activities may be cancelled due to lack of participation. In the event this should occur, all fees will be refunded. All Denville Recreation sponsored activities are open to all Denville Residents and open to non-residents one week after initial registration, with the following exceptions: Men's and Ladies Softball, Adult Basketball and Adult Volleyball. McARP provides a year round calendar of the highest quality recreational and leisure time activities for mentally and physically disabled children and adults. Parade route will be Broadway to Gardner Field. Denville Little League Opening Day Ceremonies The Denville Little League Annual Opening Day Ceremonies will be held at Gardner Field, Field One, following the Parade. PBA Fishing Contest The Denville PBA annual fishing contest will be held on Saturday, May 1st, from 7:30am-11am at Muriel Hepner Park. This event is open to Denville residents, 14 and younger. Prizes and refreshments are courtesy of the PBA. The pond will be stocked on Wednesday, April 28th at 3:30pm. All are welcome, just bring a bucket! Rotary Street Festival The Denville Rotary Street Festival will be held on Sunday, June 6, 2010, from 12 noon to 6pm, in downtown Denville. Rides, games, and food will be available. Fireworks display will be held on Wednesday night June 30th. Wristband nights are scheduled for Thursday and Saturday nights. Members are needed. Cook’s Pond Fishing Badges Fishing Badges for Cook’s Pond will go on sale Thursday, April 1st at 9:00am for Denville Residents only. Non-resident badges will go on sale, May 1st, at 9am if available. A limit of 150 “Fishing only” badges will be sold. Badges will be available from 9am to 12pm and again from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Fishing Badge Fees: Residents: $20 per person; Family of 4, $50 Hollstein Lake Fishing Badges Fishing Badges for Hollstein’s Lake will go on sale Thursday, April 1st at 9:00am for Denville Residents only. Fishing Badge Fees: Residents: $20.00 per person; Family of 4, $50.00 Non-Residents: $30.00 Denville Dolphins Swim Team: Come and swim with the Dolphins, Denville’s own swim team. The Dolphins are looking for swimmers ages 6-18 who can swim 25 meters. We swim in the North Jersey Regional Lake League. Practices are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Swimmers ages 10 and younger practice from 1-2pm and ages 11 and older practice from 2-3pm. Meets are Wednesday night & Saturday morning. The season starts around June 21stand ends the first week of August. Swim team fees: $45 per swimmer, $70 for 2 swimmers, & a max of $85 per family. Registration forms will be available from the recreation office starting May 5th. All residents 18 and older are welcome. A Denville Recreation issued Photo ID is needed to participate. ID’s will be issued on Wednesday night October 7th from 6-7:30pm in the Municipal Building, and daily in the Recreation Office. Cost of the program is $20.00 per player. This program has started and ends on May 12, 2010. Pick-up games are on Monday and Wednesday nights from 8-10pm in the Lakeview School Gym. Adult Co-Ed Volleyball The Denville Recreation Co-Ed volleyball program is open to all Denville Residents 18 and older. Volleyball will meet every Tuesday & Thursday from 8pm to 10pm in the Riverview Gym. This is a fun non-competitive program. Come out & enjoy the fun. Sign-ups are Wednesday night October 7th, from 6pm to 7:30pm, in the Community Room in the Municipal Building, or daily in the Recreation Office. Fee is $10.00. Proof of residence is required. The program has started and ends on May 13, 2010. Ladies Softball Ladies, do you want to get exercise the fun way? Play non-competitive softball on Thursdays, 6:00-8:00pm. No experience necessary. Team shirt included with $15 registration fee. All participants must be at least 18 years old & out of high school. All players must register in person on Wednesday, April 7th, 6pm-7:30pm or Saturday, April 10th, 10am11:30am, in the Municipal Building. A second registration will be held on Wednesday, June 2nd, 6pm-7:30pm and Saturday June 5th, 10am11:30am, in Town Hall or in the Recreation Office during the week. The season starts the end of June. Men’s Recreation Softball This is a fun recreational league open to all Denville residents who are 32 and older. All players must register in person on Wednesday, April 7th, 6pm-7:30pm or Saturday, April 10th, 10am –11:30am, in the Municipal Building. A second registration will be held on Wednesday, June 2nd, 6pm-7:30pm and Saturday, June 5th, 10am11:30am in the Municipal Building or in the Recreation Office during the week. Games are played on Monday & Wednesday nights starting at 6:30pm. New players will be randomly assigned to existing teams. Proof of residence is required. Registration fee $25. The season will start the end of June. V OLU ME 1 1 ISSU E 1 T HE RE C R OOM PAGE 9 Community Bulletin Board Join the Fun at Cook’s Pond Cook’s Pond is a 12 acre pond located off Entrance Way, in Denville. We are a family oriented swim facility, dedicated to maintaining a clean safe facility for its members. Resident and non-resident memberships are available to families, individuals, and seniors. Membership applications are available anytime from the Recreation Office, or at the Gate at Cook’s Pond during the season. Last summer we opened the latest addition of our continued improvements at Cook’s Pond. The new “Bath House” opened Memorial Day Weekend. The bath house contains new Men’s & Ladies restrooms that include changing stalls, a new First Aid Station/Lake Staff Office and a concession stand. We will be offering cold drinks, Ice Cream and other snacks to help you better enjoy your stay at Cook’s Pond. Improvements for this summer include a picnic pavilion with horse shoe pits, a bocce court and other surprises. Our goal is to make Cook’s Pond your destination of choice! As in the past we will continue with our swim lessons, weekend activities for the children, and back by popular demand the overnight camp out at the pond. There will be new activities this summer including a fishing contest for kids, and of course there is plenty of room to sunbathe on our white sand beach. Grills and picnic tables are available for members use. The pond is also available for small family picnics (50 people of less) for an additional fee. If you would like to book Cook’s Pond for a picnic please contact the Recreation Department ay 973-625-8300 ext 238 or call the Cook’s Pond Office at 973-627-2521. Please remember the pond does not open until Memorial Day Weekend and no one is at the pond to answer your calls. We need at least 2 weeks notice to book any picnic, this is to insure lifeguard/staff availability. The water in the pond is tested every two weeks in accordance with N.J. State regulations to assure you and your family of clean, safe swimming conditions. So, why spend another summer stuck in the house-come out and join the fun at Cook’s Pond. Cook’s Pond will open Memorial Day Weekend and be open Weekends only. As of Monday, June 21st, the pond will be open everyday through Labor Day, September 6th. Hours of operation are 11am till dusk, weather permitting. Hours subject to change after August 21st. Swim lessons are divided into two different groups. Group A meets on Monday & Wednesday, Group B will meet on Tuesday & Thursdays, with both groups alternating Fridays. Lessons are approx. 30-40 minutes in length, and are held between the hours of 11am & 3pm, and Group A will also have classes available between the hours of 4pm & 6pm The cost for swim lessons are as follows: Cook’s Pond Members: $30.00 per child. Non-members: $60.00 per child. Classes will start the week of June 28th and end August 9th. Rain dates may be rescheduled at the discretion of the Swim School Director. Registration for Denny’s Swim School will be held on Wednesday, June 2nd, 6pm-7:30pm and Saturday, June 5th, 10-11:30am in the Community Room at Town Hall or you can go to the Cook’s Pond on the following weekend dates: June 5/6, 12/13. To obtain a permit you must complete a facility usage form, and attach a certificate of insurance, then send it to the Recreation Department. Tennis Court Usage Tennis Court Information: Badges are required for the use of all tennis courts. Tennis badges cost $8.00 per person and a membership for a family of 4 is $20.00. Badges are available at all registration dates (see page 2 for more info), or in the Recreation Office or the Township Clerk’s Office daily from 8am to 4pm. Proof of residency is required. The hours of the sale are as follows: Friday, June 25 from 5 to 7:30pm for Friends of the Library Members only, you can become a member that night. PAGE 12 T HE RE C R OOM V OLU ME 1 1 ISSU E 1 Rutgers Coach’s Safety Clinic The Denville Recreation Department will be hosting the Rutgers Coach’s Safety Clinic on Wednesday, March 31st, April 28th, July 28th, September 29th, and Tuesday, November 23rd in the Municipal Building. Registration starts at 6pm, and the class begins promptly at 6:30pm. The class is 3 hours long. Pre-registration is required. Please e-mail the Recreation Department at recreation@denvillenj.org to pre-register. Please leave your name, address, phone number and the sport you will be coaching. Cost of the class is $30.00 for Denville Residents and $35.00 for non-residents. Each class is limited to the first 50 coaches who pre-register. Denville Cheerleading Registration information for the Denville PAL Girls Cheerleading Program will be in the SUMMER edition of the Rec Room. Program Overview Denville Blue Angels Football is open to all Denville residents from kindergarten through 8th grade. Ages 5-7 register for flag football and Ages 8-14 register for Tackle Football. Please note: the birthday cut-off date is August 1st. Practices begin the first week of August and games are played Labor Day weekend through Mid November. Registration Dates: Wednesday, April 7th, 6pm-9pm, Saturday, April 10th, 9am-11:30am at the Municipal Building & Saturday April 17th, Opening Day of Baseball 9am-12 noon at the Gardner Field House. All registrations will be in-person. A copy of each players birth certificate is required. Registration Fee: (Check or Money Order Only) Flag: $75.00, Tackle: $125.00 American Legion Baseball Tryouts: Denville American Legion Post 390 will hold open tryouts for the following teams for the 2010 American Legion Baseball Season. 19U, 17U, and 15U. V OLU ME 1 1 ISSU E 1 T HE RE C R OOM PAGE 13 Denville Dawgs Youth Rugby Play Youth Rugby This Summer - Join the Denville Dawgs! Once again, Denville PAL, Denville Recreation, and Morris Rugby will combine forces and offer the Denville Dawgs Summer Youth Rugby Program. American Flag Rugby is a coed, non-contact, form of rugby using flags. Skills including running, kicking, passing, space strategy, teamwork and self-confidence will be developed. The program is run as a clinic, with two evening practices and Saturday morning games scheduled against neighboring towns. We know its summer, so we keep things low key - the commitment level is entirely up to you. The program is intended for children entering first grade through ninth grade. There will also be an introduction to tackle rugby program run alongside the flag program for those children in middle school who are interested in learning the full contact rugby game. Tackle games will be scheduled on Saturdays following the flag games. There is no additional fee to participate in this program. Practices are for all ages will be held at the Pocono Fields beginning on June 15th and the season will commence with a final tournament on July 24th. Practices will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-7:30pm and games will be played on Saturday mornings at 9am. Children from any town are welcome to join. There is a $55 application fee with a cutoff date May 30th. Participants will receive the new rugby tee shirt, a DVD describing the game, and a matted individual and team photo. If you don’t have one from last season, a team Jersey must be purchased for $30 and team flag shorts are $20. Most of all, participants will have FUN learning and playing the exciting sport of Rugby! We focus on basic skills, form endurance, strength and speed. This program is for all abilities and will conclude with a mini triathlon. The training group is coached by a Certified USA Triathlon Coach. This 12 week program will meet 2 nights per week, mostly Tuesdays and Thursdays (some weeks will vary) from June 22nd-September 9th. Included is a heart rate assessment to determine maximum heart rate, daily workouts and articles on safety, tips and etiquette. Weather your goal is compete or complete, we will get you across the finish line. Get fit and lose weight while learning life sport skills. Fee for 12 week course is $300. Registration forms will be available via the Denville School Friday web folders, the Denville Recreation Office & HUB Soccer's web page (www.hubsoccer.org). The cost for the spring session is $55 and a family max of $110 for 2 or more players. A late registration fee of $20 per player is applicable for registrations received after April 1st. The spring session starts Saturday April 17th and targeted to end on Saturday, May 22nd. The spring session is for grades PreK through 4th grade. The session includes 1 week night and a Saturday afternoon. Times and schedules will be publicized in early April once the teams have been assigned. General Information about HUB Soccer HUB Soccer of Denville, Inc. provides a Denville soccer programs for both recreation and travel players. Fall, winter-indoor and spring sessions are available for both groups. The fall recreation program is for PreK through 8th grade players, we also offer a Challenger Division for Special Needs Players. The winter-indoor and spring sessions are for PreK through 4th Grade. Please note that all PreK players must be age 4 to participate. An Afternoon Munchkin Division is available in the fall and spring for players 3.5, 4, and 5 years old. This policy applies to recreation, challenger and travel players. Our travel program is for boy and girl players U9 through U14 seeking more challenging and competitive soccer venue. Travel teams compete in the Morris County Youth Soccer Association, which has a fall and spring session. Some teams also compete in winter-indoor leagues. Tryouts are held in mid May and player evaluations are done by paid independent soccer professionals. Denville PAL Recreation Softball Denville PAL Softball is for players of various ages and abilities. In support of this goal, the league is comprised of both recreational teams and travel teams. The recreational league consists of multiple divisions and is for players from Kindergarten through High School. All practices and games take place in Denville and no tryouts are required. Camp will begin on Monday June 21st and end on August 6th, there will be no camp on Monday, July 5th. This program is for children entering Kindergarten through 6 grade. Camp hours are 9am to 3pm. Early drop-off and after care will be available. Early drop-off starts at 8am and after care is available until 5:30pm. Aftercare will not be available on the last day of camp (August 6th). REGISTRATION: Open Registration will begin on February 17th at 9am in the Denville Recreation Office. All Registration forms are due Friday, April 30th. Tuition will be $155.00 per week, for weeks 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, week 3 will be $135.00. The Early drop-off will be $5.00 per day, per child. The Aftercare Program will be $10.00 per day, per child. Lunch Options will be available through Simply Gourmet. Info will be in the registration packets. We will only be doing trips once a week this summer. Trips will be on Wednesday. No trip week 1. This event is non-competitive activity. Our goal is to have children participate in the event and enjoy these outdoor activities. Registration fee is $10 per child. All participants MUST pre-register, only the first 30 participants in each age group will be accepted. NO REGISTRATIONS will be taken on the day of the event, NO EXCEPTIONS! Hershey Park Bus Trip Come enjoy a “Family Day” at Hershey Park on Wednesday, August 25th. Hershey Park has over 60 rides and attractions, including 11 roller coaster, 20 Kiddie rides, live entertainment and great food. You can check out the 5 distinctive water attractions in the Boardwalk section of the park. Leave the driving to us, transportation is on a coach bus with a bathroom. Trip is limited to the first 45 people to register. Admission to park and bus transportation costs are: ADULT (9-54) $54.00, CHILDREN (3-8) and SENIORS (55+) $52.00. The bus will leave from the Municipal Building at 8am and return at approx. 9pm. Spaces are available to both Members and non-members. Members fee is $20 per space and non-members is $25 per space. Vendors must supply their own tables; space size is 10 feet by 10 feet. Saturday Morning Camp for Grades K-3rd The Denville Recreation Department will be hosting a Saturday Morning Camp for children in grades K-3rd. Activities will include an Arts and Crafts Project, Games, Story Time, Group Activates and much more! The Saturday morning program is run by the Summer Plus Director Dana Zeleny and other Camp Staff Members. What a great way for your child to get to know the Summer Camp Staff before Camp starts. Our next 2 sessions are: Saturday, May 8th, “Spring has Sprung” and Saturday, June 19th “Celebrate the Change of the Season”. Classes run from 9am to 12 noon in the Community Room in Town Hall. Denville Recreation Drama Workshop The Denville Recreation Department is now registering students ages 8 to 12 years old for an 8 week Drama Workshop (plus extra practices for play may be necessary). Cost of class is $85 per student. Classes will be held on Mondays from 5:30-6:30pm at St. Francis Residential Community on Diamond Spring Road across from the Library. Children will experience Creative Dramatics, Poetry, Reading, Fundamentals of Theater, and Participation in Skits, Plays and a Production at the end of class.
