I am glad our wintry weather is behind us, allowing us opportunities to keep school open five days a week to advance student learning. Due to the snow day cancellations, April 7 is now a make-up school day and will run as a telelearn anchor schedule where students obtain learning experiences remotely through Blackboard. Earlier this semester, our school underwent Mental Wellness Week, coordinated by our school psychologist, social worker, and Active Minds student club. Students participated in daily activities to reflect on their wellness, including healthy lifestyle choices related to diet, sleep, exercise, and acts of kindness. In addition, we also took approaches to inform students that it is common to experience some symptoms of depression in one’s life. We’d rather students seek help by talking with caring friends and adults about depression rather than bottle it up. Ideally, every student would have at least one trusted adult in their life that they could turn to TJHSST Techcetera for help. One in four adults experience depression, and according to school survey data, 20% of TJHSST students report feelings of prolonged sadness over the past year (30% in FCPS). The data results have been consistent over the past three years. Students seem comfortable to express their thoughts about stress; however we need them also to open up about depression since mental wellness impacts many facets of their lives. You can help us in our efforts by sharing your experiences with depression so students realize it’s not a stigma and can be addressed and resolved like other illnesses. Each year, we have invited speakers to share their experience related to suicide (attempted or loss of a family member), since some students contemplate and attempt it. The speakers often reflect on the impact on the family and friends, the responsibility to respond to critical signs, and the resources available to help students in need. This winter, there were several untimely student deaths in FCPS, so we are even more mindful about how important it is to report any concerning signs to our school counselors. Our student services department conducts annual depression screenings to educate students and Page 2 evaluate student wellness so they can provide further support where it is needed. It is very important that parents are aware of the names of close friends and adults their child trusts, as well as having an awareness of their social media outlets. Those are the individuals who are likely to hear someone talking or writing about death, threatening to hurt themselves, and/or looking for ways to access pills, weapons, or other lethal means. A student facing a life threatening situation may wish to confide critical information to a close friend/adult, and the response should not be to keep it a secret, but instead seek immediate help by telling a trusted adult, alerting a medical/mental health practitioner, calling 911 if needed, and alerting school counseling staff so they can assist in an emergency. Families and students can also call Crisis Link (703-527-4077) 24 hours a day for confidential advice. I have had many conversations with students, staff, and parents about mental wellness at TJ. Some people believe the intense academic environment may be an incubator to depression. The data do not show a correlation, however we cannot dismiss that depression is a common experience April 2014 Click Here to Return to Index among high school students that needs to be addressed. We have made some efforts to educate our student body about depression and suicide, and I am open to additional strategies you have found useful at home or in the community. Don’t hesitate to contact me at Evan.Glazer at fcps.edu to share additional ideas for the benefit of helping our students and families. Notwithstanding the snow and delays, the PTSA Hospitality Committee put together a splendid teacher appreciation lunch that included Peking duck, bulgogi, samosas, Mexican lasagna, fried tofu, fried chicken, pork tenderloin, sandwiches, salads, sushi and homemade desserts. What a multicultural feast! I was particularly touched that parents with limited English were willing to share their native food to express their appreciation to our teachers in such an effective way. Thank you so much to all our volunteers! If anyone is interested in chairing this committee next year, please contact the PTSA volunteer chairs. Pi night at the Mosaic was a huge success. The PTSA raised $500 and TJ students raised hundreds of dollars for charity. Performers included Namaste, TJ Show Choir, TJ Guitar Club and a beautiful duet by Fox Wilson and Anya Owsenek on the outdoor piano and TJHSST Techcetera violin. Congratulations if you have a younger child who was admitted to TJ. Please remember that you must register your younger child in the PTSA database or he/she will not be included in the TJ directory. Last fall, we were missing over 100 freshmen and we are determined not to miss anyone this year. In addition, we have several parents who have paid for a TJ directory but have not yet picked it up. If you want yours, please ask your child to pick one up at the front desk in the aud lob. We have a list of purchasers there. Any directories not picked up by April 9 will be sold to incoming freshmen. Do you enjoy the Tech cetera? Now that the PTSA sends weekly This Week at TJ emails, does the community still want or need a monthly newsletter as well? Please complete this short survey to give us some feedback. Next year, it looks like FCPS will again face some tight economic times. This may result in AP test fees next year. In addition, if FCPS increases class size, Page 4 TJ may have some additional multi-level classes and/or might lose a few teachers. If you are interested in learning more about the budget, here’s the FCPS presentation on the advertised budget. The highlights can be found here. In addition, Fairfax County has published a citizen’s guide, which can be found here. As we look into next year, the PTSA is facing a tremendous challenge. Due to unforeseen circumstances, our 1st Vice President is not able to be PTSA President next year. The PTSA nominating committee is actively looking for a new President, Vice President and Secretary. These leadership positions are a fabulous way to stay informed and help contribute to school programs and policies. It has been a tremendously gratifying and enjoyable experience. I am happy to talk to anyone who is interested. You can contact me at ptsa.president at tjhsst.edu. Regards, Grace Becker PTSA President, 2013-14 April 2014 Click Here to Return to Index Letter from Student Services Dear TJ Families, The Department of Student Services is getting ready to greet a new class of incoming freshmen. If you have a student in the Class of 2018, note that there will be significant changes to the math curriculum for incoming freshmen. These changes will not affect any current TJ students. Here is a summary of the new curriculum and here are some FAQs. In March, I met with sophomore parents for our annual DSS coffee. Every year, with the help of a PTSA parent volunteer, I hold one coffee for each class. We try to keep the group relatively small (about 15 parents) so that we can have a meaningful exchange of questions and answers. I have found these events to be helpful in learning about class concerns and hopefully I am able to provide some answers for parents. The freshman parent coffee was rescheduled to April 25 from 9-10:30am. The coffee is full and we already have a waiting list. I know that some parents may be disappointed that we don't have more room, but I hope that we will have other TJHSST Techcetera opportunities to speak informally. Members of our office and I have been to several PTSA meetings this year and I look forward to attending more in the future. Thank you, Teresa Li, for organizing the coffees and providing refreshments. We are continuing the 2014-2015 Course Selection Season. Students should have submitted a draft schedule and reviewed them with their counselors. The very last day to change courses for next year is April 11, 2014. After that date, electronic verifications will be sent out to parents to approve their son/daughter’s course selections. After that time, there will be no changes to schedules until August 2014, and even then only on a space available basis. to explore the website as it includes lots of helpful information. As always, please feel free to contact your counselor or me if you have any questions that we can answer for you. Brandon Kosatka Director of Student Services bpkosatka at fcps.edu Upcoming 2013-2014 PTSA Meetings Wednesday April 2 – 7:30-9pm Wednesday May 7 – 7:30-9pm Monday June 9 – 7:30-9pm Before I close, I would like to take a minute to highlight a few items on the DSS website that you might not be aware of. In addition to the TJ course selection guide and curriculum planning documents, the website also has a page of FAQ’s on a wide variety of topics as well as a You Tube Video Library on topics include course selection, counselor help, and college placement. Partners for Safe Teen Driving The final Partners for Safe Teen Driving assembly will be held on Friday, May 9 at 6:30pm in the Auditorium. No preregistration is required for sophomores. Juniors and seniors need to pre-register and pay the current fee. Further information and the registration form can be found here. Renovation Information Construction activity will increase around the school as the construction crew makes up for slowdowns due to the abundant snowfall this winter. Restroom installation in the learning cottage area behind Weyanoke should be soon completed. Page 6 Additionally, new signage has been placed around the school in order to make parking and moving around campus easier. Please obey these new signs as it makes everyone’s trip to campus smoother and allows construction and bus traffic to move in a safe and orderly manner. Additional movement from second floor classrooms to the Weyanoke learning cottages will occur during spring break in order to allow for the construction of a new hallway from the new research wing to the existing building. Lastly, as spring arrives, more students will be spending time outside during lunch and free times. If anyone has patio furniture they would like to donate to the school, it will be greatly appreciated as this furniture will be placed outside the learning cottages for outdoor lunch and classroom activities. Please send any questions about the renovation to Brandon Kosatka. Note: During the PTSA Meeting in March, there was a question regarding asbestos removal procedures. The FCPS Asbestos Abatement Standard Operating Procedures can be found here. Hospitality Dear parents, First, thank you for your support in helping out with the teachers' appreciation lunch on March 18th. After the 11th snow day, we were very pleased that we were able to host hospitality for our teachers once they returned to school. A wide variety of items came in and many people helped. Thank you all for being able to keep your promises and doing what you Page 7 signed up for; a group of Chinese parents contributed a treat of 15 Peking ducks, the PTSA executive officers brought in their favorite dishes, and many people signed up to contribute many different items. Because of all of you, the lunch went very well. This is the last PTSA scheduled lunch to serve our teachers. I'm thankful for all of your help with our hospitality through the year. Many of you were always there for me, and we also received tons of support from the kitchen and building workers. Thank you again because without you all these jobs wouldn’t have bee completed. It was my pleasure to work with you this year. Best regards, Jane Hsu PTSA Hospitality Chair Volunteering AP Exam Parent Proctors Needed Approximately 94 to be exact! ANGP The Class of 2014 will have one last chance to celebrate with their classmates the night of graduation Saturday, June 21 - at the Audrey Moore Recreation Center. The All-Night Grad Party, planned and carried out by parent volunteers, provides our kids with a safe, fun environment to celebrate with their friends. ANGP is an annual party organized for the graduating seniors by their parents. To organize this party, and to do it well, is a big deal. It is entirely organized and run by parents. So, we need volunteers - lots of them. And, because the party starts right after the graduation ceremony, we need lots of freshman, sophomore and junior parents to help set up, since April 2014 Click Here to Return to Index senior parents will be at the Patriot Center events with their graduates. Please volunteer. If this ANGP seems a little early to you, please note that time does fly and, before you know it, it will be your turn to throw the ANGP. In April, we are hosting a group of 16 German exchange students from our new partner school in Munich, Germany. This will be a wonderful experience for our students to practice their German hands-on for two weeks and share their own culture with German teenagers. Of course, the real reward for hosting a TJHSST Techcetera Page 9 student is a trip to Germany. In June, sixteen students will enjoy a two-week trip to Munich to reconnect with their exchange partners, chaperoned by Frau Oszko (German teacher) and Mr. Williams (English teacher). This will be a full immersion trip for the TJ students: While staying with their host family, they will be visiting classes at our partner school, Heinrich Heine Gymnasium, attending cultural events, and touring the beautiful cities and attractions of Bavaria. The German exchange program is sponsored by the German American Partnership Program (GAPP) in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut and the US State Department. All students in the German Program have the opportunity to participate in the GAPP Exchange at least once during their German studies at TJ. Families who would like to be involved should contact Frau Oszko at soszko at fcps.edu. April 2014 Click Here to Return to Index Class News 2014 - Seniors Happy Spring! With any luck, we are finished with snow for at least seven months. This snowy March was reminiscent of March 1999 when our freshmen were babies or soon to be born. How time flies! Thank you to all who contributed to and helped at the March freshmen bake sale. It was a huge success. Thank you also to those who contributed to and helped at the Teacher Appreciation Lunch. The teachers were very grateful for all that went into it. Fairfax online summer school forms will be available on May 5. Most freshmen met individually with their counselors during March to discuss course selection for the upcoming school year. If your student did not, he or she should look for his or her counselor at lunch or during break to set up a meeting. Schedules for next year need to be selected on the Online Scheduler by April 11, and changes can be made until then. February 22, 2014, marked another successful day for TJ Certamen. Although February is usually the month in which TJ hosts a Certamen, an event that was unable to occur due to the renovation, Virginia’s players were not without their monthly Certamen fix. The Riverbend Certamen, originally scheduled for December but cancelled due to inclement weather, took place this month—much to the joy of Latin scholars across the state. Unlike the other certamina of the season, Riverbend uses ranked pitting, placing each team against those with similar skill levels. As one might expect, the competition is tough! TJ, however, came out of the certamen yet again with top scores in each level, and each team scored in at least the top five places of its level. We also need parents to volunteer to be on the Academic Boosters board. As a whole, the team had an astonishing team score of 31.5 which gave us first place by a large margin (the second place team had a team score of just 23.5). A separate event, the Virginia Scholastic and Collegiate Championship, occupied the remainder of the weekend. The TJ team took first place in this as well, with five TJ players finishing in the top 10 in the state. This is the 16th year in a row that TJ has one this event! Congratulations to Isuru Attanagoda, Brian Li, Jeevan Karamsetty, Ashley Xue, and Perry Feng for this terrific performance! There were a total of 6 games with four played on Saturday and two being played on Sunday. Our team score (calculated the exact same way as mentioned previously) was 19. The April 2014 Click Here to Return to Index second place school had only 14.5 cumulative points. Another great statistic is that all 20 TJ kids finished in the top 45 in the competition! Dr. Gabor, who is the team coach, was very happy with the team in Roanoke, especially because of the cohesion that was seen among team members. In particular, after every match several team members would help analyze each person's game as they looked it over. This team had a lot of support for each other. Many parents came down and helped what they can, especially the Perry Feng’s family, who took care of so much of the organizing and logistics of the event. The team will go to the National event next week in San Diego. We wish them all the best!! Go TJ! TJHSST Techcetera Future Problem Solvers Thanks to the continuing support of Academic Boosters, TJ Future Problem Solving had 19 teams and one individual compete in the qualifying round in late January, for a total of 77 students. Under the instruction of President Aaron Zhao and Secretary Anudeep Mangu, two students, Anusha Holavanahali (9) and Melanie Piller (11), submitted written scenarios for the FPS Scenario Writing competition. This past week, Virginia FPS announced the results; Holavanahali placed 1st in the state for the middle division and Piller placed 2nd in the state for the senior division! Through our outreach efforts, we were also able to train and support three teams from Kilmer Middle School to enter the FPS competition. In the future, we will reach out to other middle schools where parents can make a long term commitment to FPS and we will work hard to provide teams the necessary training. As this issue was going to press, we learned that five senior division teams and two middle division teams are state finalists for Global Issues Problem Solving! Page 15 Congratulations to these students whose teams will go to the State Bowl in Norfolk on April 4: Sania Ali, Sahitya Allam, Victoria Bevard, Yike Chen, Pooja Chandrashekar, Saroj Chintakrindi, Joyce Duan, Alexander Geyer, Christopher Hoang, Isaac Iyengar, MinJoo Kang, Jessica Kim, Andrew Li, James Ma, Anudeep Mangu, Rayan Matin, Ramya Radhakrishnan, Raquel Sequeira, Snigdha Srivastava, Nayana Suvarna, Julian Vallyeason, Jessica Wang, Jay Warrior, Olivia Zhang, Aaron Zhao, Christina Zhao, and Jenny Zhu. Lead by Captain Sid Verma and ably supported by senior Nadège Aoki and sophomore Ryan Golant, the game was determined in the last 30 seconds. Sponsors John Laffey and Jennifer Seavey could count the number of new gray hairs on their heads when it was over. Mascot Tommy J was on hand to liven up the round intervals with his dance moves. Band Boosters On Saturday, March 15, the TJ Drum Line won First Place in its class at the Regional WGI Drum Line show in Powhatan, Virginia. TJ Girls 2014 State Swim Dive Runners-Up Boys Tennis: Coach John Myers finalized the boys’ 2013-2014 tennis team roster earlier this month. Match play commenced last Page 22 Boys Tennis Pre-Langley Match Preparations Girls Tennis: The Thomas Jefferson Girl's Tennis team, 21 strong and again under the direction of Coach Simon Harrington, finally got the chance to show what they are made of. The squad of 12 veterans, and 9 newcomers, led by senior co-captains Rena Liu and Victoria Xia had their first scrimmage of the year, where they faced the formidable Oakton Cougars. The Cougars, like TJ were April 2014 Click Here to Return to Index state semi-finalists last year. TJ could not overcome the Lady Cougars last year and this first scrimmage, unfortunately, fell the same way. However, last year's defeats were quite sound, whereas this years was a nail biter 5-4 going against TJ. In the #1 position was senior, Rena Liu who matched up against the 2013 State Champion. #2 Anna Venetianer, a junior, got off to a slow start and by the time she got going it was a bit too late and Oakton won the court. # 3 saw returning sophomore Ankitha Yanamandra, play a highly contested match that she eventually won. Senior Victoria Xia and sophomore Kritika Singh battled in position #4 and #5 respectively. Playing in the the sixth position and winning in convincing fashion was newcomer, freshman Julena Liu. TJ prevailed in the doubles matches, but the two doubles courts TJ won were not quite enough to take the day. The fact that the TJ ladies played Oakton that closely despite losing the back of their lineup to graduation, shows great promise for the season. Next the ladies will face South Lakes in their first official match of the season. Track and Field: After a great Indoor Track season Spring Track and Field practices are in full swing. The team, TJHSST Techcetera led by Head Coach Jeff James, and Assistants Gary Grimsley, Tom Norton and Todd Withington, is expecting a strong season with a number of key returners from prior years. For the Girls, Grace Zeng, Haley Stumvoll, Kate Salamido and Katrina Junta will lead the distance runners, while Sydney Miller, Carolina Hatanpää, Monique Mehzer and Claire Dong are some of the strong performers for the sprints and field events. Once the weather improves and the snow melts the team is looking forward to a great season.
