New events - New this year are Family
BBQ nights at the club every Thursday night
at 6 p.m. The cost is only $12 per person.
Also, Doug Brown has three Eagles golf
tournaments lined up at Northstar-at-Tahoe,
and Mary Ann and Charles Quaglieri and Pat
and Ray Landgraf have Bridge games set up
through July and August.
This year, TYC will be doing the Woodie
Over-the-Bottom off Obexer’s Marina
with a Caribbean theme on Monday,
Aug. 15, with an award luncheon at Obexer’s
barn. We’ll have a no-host bar plus a band
for entertainment, so don’t miss this exciting
event.
Be sure to check the calendar for full
details and don’t forget to RSVP for your
favorite events by the advertised due dates to
secure your spot!
Lunch at the club - Dockside 700, the
restaurant below the club, has been open now
for two months and I’m happy to say that
many members have been enjoying the opportunity of ordering food and having it served in
the privacy of the club. Next time you are in,
ask a bartender for their menu and give it a try.
This is what members have been waiting for,
so come and enjoy hot and cold sandwiches
and wraps, homemade soups, fresh salads plus
pizza or a selection from the new dinner menu
right here in the comfort of your own club.
Minimum period extended - This year,
the board of directors extended the minimum
through December 31. Remember you can
fulfill your minimum with bar and retail purchases, along with renting of the club for your
private party (with the rental fee waived for
members, you pay only the $300 cleaning fee
for use of the club).
We have some new and fun retail items in
the Boatique: brim hats and visors, sweatshirts
and shirts. Items for yourself or for a gift. Be
sure to check out our Boatique next time you
come to the clubhouse!

Newest Summer Crew
Leila Malcolm grew
up outside of Boston,
sailing in the summer
on Cape Cod. She started racing Optimists and
then 420s while teaching at the local sailing
camp. A graduate of
Hamilton College in
upstate New York with a degree in geology,
Leila has been in Tahoe since September 2010.
While doing markset and committee boat for
all our sailing events, Leila also earned kudos
as committee boat for the Rowing Regatta and
her shore boat duties for the club’s July picnic
at Sugar Pine Point.
Matt Toddes grew up
in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and graduated in
2010 from Alfred University in western New
York state with a degree
in art/design along with
minors in marketing and
business. He moved out
to Tahoe in November 2010 to ski and decided
to stay. He enjoys longboarding, sailing, skiing and hiking. You will see Matt at the bar on
Saturdays and Sundays and helping out with
sailing events as markset.

Commodore
S
ummer finally arrived after a missing spring. In spite of the late
arrival, we’re all grateful for the precipitation – rain or snow – to
raise our beautiful Lake Tahoe to its current level.
Many summer events have already happened, including the beginning of our Eagles golf tournaments, organized by Doug Brown at the
Northstar golf course. Our Laser and keel boat sailors are getting ready to
award their spring series trophies before kicking off their summer series.
The first Over-the-Bottom had beautiful weather to bring out a large fleet
of TYC boats. Many thanks to OTB co-chairs Tom O’Rourke and Roger
McGee for producing such a fine event.
While difficult financial times have accounted for a loss of some
members, a recruitment effort has already produced many
new members and several new slip renters in the new addition to the Tahoe City Marina have taken an interest with
some already signing up. TCM has offered a great financial
incentive to its new slip renters who join our fine club. Our
Membership committee has also proposed an added incentive
to recruit new members (page 4).
Concours d’Elegance and Wooden Boat Week which, happily, has been
moved back to August. This year, the TYC Foundation has turned over
both the Woodie Over-the-Bottom and Mahogany Magic to the club.
Tom O’Rourke has picked a “Caribbean” theme for this year’s OTB
which will start and end at Obexer’s Marina on Monday, Aug. 15.
We’ll be producing a superb show for Mahogany Magic which will
be held, as usual, at the Gatekeeper’s Museum the evening of Tuesday,
Aug. 16. I’m hoping you’ll all attend as it will be a fun show, a great
chance to see your friends and yourself on the big screen. You’ll get free
wine and beer, and a set-up for your barbecue, as well as the show. There
will also be a reward for the best table decoration. And don’t forget the
club’s Boat Week party, this year with a Jimmy Buffett theme, so be sure
to join us in “Margaritaville” on Saturday, Aug. 13.
Under the superb direction of our treasurer, Fred Greifenstein, the
financial situation of the club is in good shape. We are not only meeting
our expenses but providing you, our members, with wonderful events.
The sailing program is outstanding and the motor boating events continue to offer many fun times. As you read online and in your Block &
Tackle, the social offerings are diverse and welcoming for all. Your job
is to take advantage of all that interests you and get to know your fellow
members. There is a fine group of people to share
your common interests. As fall enters, don’t forget
the club as there continue to be many opportunities for your enjoyment.
Now that summer activities have swung
into full gear, we look forward to seeing you at the
yacht club and all our superb events.

like to join. As an added incentive, the Membership committee has come up with an offer
‘you can’t refuse’ for those who bring in

“If a current member, in good standing,
of the Tahoe Yacht Club sponsors a new
prospective member of the “Regular”
class, and this prospective new member
becomes a full Regular Member with initiation and dues paid in a calendar year,

2011 Meet the Nominees
Bruce Block, a Bay
Area financial consultant and former executive director of the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht
Association (PICYA),
attended Cal Poly and
San Jose State where
he earned a degree in
business and a MBA in marketing. A member of TYC since 1987, Bruce was a charter
member of the Hospitality committee and has
chaired both Membership and House committees. Bruce, a Penguin skier in the winter, was
also the instigator of the club’s new Eagles
golf group. A former member of San Francisco Bay’s Islander 36 sailing fleet, Bruce
and his wife, Staff Commodore Donna, now
“sail” Tomahawk, a 1937 Chris-Craft runabout
on Lake Tahoe. The Blocks and their golden
retriever, Winchester, make their home in Tiburon and Tahoma.
Fred Greifenstein
was appointed to the
board as treasurer in
September. Originally
from New York City, he
was working in IT management at Argonne National Laboratory near
Chicago when he met
his wife, Linda, who was pursuing her doctorate at Northwestern. In 1974 the couple moved
to Italy where Fred helped manage the largest
private data center in Europe. In 1978, he began a consulting firm in Rome, specializing in
IT systems for large banks. Since returning to
the U.S. in 1988 with their two daughters and
earning an MBA from UCLA, Fred has specialized in human resource management. He
now consults part-time and teaches management at the University of Phoenix in Reno and
online. Residents of Crystal Bay, Nev., since
2008, the Greifensteins became members of
TYC in 2009. They have a Hunter 41 in Sausalito which Fred skippered with a TYC crew
for this spring’s Opening Day on the Bay.
Keith Mason grew
up in the restaurant
business (his father
was a successful restaurant owner in San
Francisco) and cooking is still a hobby.

interests shifted from the kitchen to the stage.
After working with various studios as a key
grip and lighting gaffer, Keith formed his own
company–Mason Studio Services based in San
Francisco and Seattle–which he ran from 1978
to 2005. In addition, he worked as a director
of photography for N. Lee Lacy, Paramount
and various other Hollywood studios for 20
of those years. In 2006, Keith added property construction, development/management
to his resumé as owner of KMT Properties
after making Tahoe his home. A TYC member
since 2000, Keith has co-chaired Monday
Night Football and, along with his wife, Susie,
planned and hosted several club social events.
On the water, these Dollar Hill residents are
also stalwart OTB contenders in their 33-ft.

Roger McGee has
been a member of THC
for 17 years and during
that time he’s served on
the membership committee, co-chaired the
Over-the-Bottoms for
the past five years, initiated the OTB kickoff
party and seen boat participation double from
1- to more than 20 boats per event. He can
also chalk up 12 years as a judge for the TYCF
Concours d’Elegance. By profession with an
MBA and an MS in chemical engineering,
Roger’s had 32 years of management experience with Chevron. Now with a California real
estate license, he does oil industry consulting
for private real estate clients. Roger and his
wife, Joan, call Tiburon home where Roger
served as president of the largest homeowners
group in the city. Here at the Lake, the west
shore is home and their boat: Sh-Boom, a 1959
17-ft. Chris-Craft.
Dick Morton and his
wife, Nileta, spent 30
years on the Delta and
Folsom Lake in their
Catalina 22 but now enjoy just being crew for
TYC’s Over-the-Bottom rallys. Together,
they have also been
Concours d’Elegance volunteers for the past
dozen years and since joining the Club in
2004, served on the Membership and Hospitality committees, co-chairing the later since
Dick was elected to the TYC board in 2008.
Morton, a past president of the North Lake
Tahoe Historical Society and returning board
member, also serves on the board of SnowFest, and is “the tall guy with the camera,”
photographing social events for our Block &
Tackle newsletters. A graduate of CSU Sacramento, Dick is now retired after a 30-year sales
career with AAA. The couple have homes in
Sacramento and Carnelian Bay.
Tom O’Rourke is
completing his second
full year as a member
of TYC’s Board after
being appointed to fill a
vacancy in the spring of
2009. The former San
Mateo county sheriff’s
lieutenant and his wife,
Marie, have been members of the Club since
1993, and active in ACBS where Tom serves
on the international Board of directors. Tom,
who enjoys entertaining in the couples’ second
home in Tahoe Vista, was a “natural” to serve
as Wine Events chair this past year, along
with co-chairing the club’s Over-the-Bottom
powerboat regattas. And while Sun Tripper II
has been retired as the family ski boat (in favor
of Summer Daze, a newer Chris-Craft), Tom
keeps the 1967 Century Arabian shinned up for
her regular appearance in TYCF’s Concours
d’Elegance.
Wendy Poore
is
completing her first
one-year term as a TYC
director and serving
as board secretary. Although born in Boston,
Wendy grew up in Reno,
receiving her Bachelors
in journalism at UNR.
After graduation she planned on moving to a
“big city” to pursue an advertising career, but
plans changed after living in the small German
ski town of Garmisch Partenkirchen. After
eventually settling in the “next best” small ski
town of Tahoe City, she met her husband, Tim
Crowell, and together they planted their roots
with a few houses, a few dogs and a Christmas
tree farm. Wendy, a TYC member since 2004,
was introduced to the Club by the late Erik Arnold with whom she bought her first sailboat.
When not sailing on E-Ticket or participating
in the club’s OTB rallys, you’ll find her selling
homes in Tahoe at West Lake Properties.
Rick Raduziner, who is also completing
his first one-year term, says he moved, sightunseen, from Colorado to Lake Tahoe in the
fall of 1988 and like many other skiers before
him, knew he wasn’t going to move again.

as a senior staff trainer and PSIA divisional
examiner. When Rick discovered sailing four
years ago, he joined the club and has been
having a great time being part of the TYC
gang. You may have also spotted TYC’s Laser
fleet chair and keel boat sailor enjoying some
Monday Night Football potlucks at the club,
mixing it up as a Master Mixologist contender
or on the slopes with the Penguins.
Hank Upton has been
a member of TYC
since 1997, a director
since 2004, and now is
completing his term as
commodore. And that’s
after serving five years
as Hospitality committee co-chair with his
wife, Joan. The proud Stanford alum and
physician started his career, however, with a
degree in engineering and as an officer of the
deck on a Navy destroyer. His boats now are
“woodies” including a 1941 Chris-Craft barrel
stern, a Century Resorter, two Rivas, and a
1956 Higgins convertible, the latter which he
likes to skipper for TYC’s Crusin’ series and
OTBs. Between boating and skiing with the
club’s Penguins, Hank and Joan enjoy traveling around the world. Now “retired,” Hank
still practices one day a week at the VA hospital near the couples’ Woodside, Calif., home.

John Utter has a list

long, not the least of

1984-1985 and negotiating TYC’s move from
the deck at Sunnyside
to our first “clubhouse”
facility in Homewood.
During nearly 35 years as a member, he’s
chaired the sailing program for five years and
the Trans Tahoe Regatta for 19, and continues
to race with his wife, Anne Marie (and daughter Alicia when she’s in town) aboard True
Luff, the family’s 33-ft. Tartan-10 in the Beer
Can races, weekend regattas and every Trans
Tahoe since becoming a member. His boating career began, however, as a teenager in
powerboats–a 14-ft. McDonald ‘cab forward’
hydroplane and a DeSelva runabout–that he
raced in the club’s early regattas off Chambers
Landing and Tahoe Tavern. Off the water, the
Reno native has been owner of Utter Mortgage
Company and Utter Real Estate Consultants
for 30 years, a former board member and past
president of Prospectors Club, and active for
the past 20 years as advisor to his University of
Nevada fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
Andy Wagner, TYC’s
current junior staff
commodore, has been
a member of the board
since 2004 during which
time he established and
chaired the club’s popular wine events program
of tastings and bi-annual Winemaker’s Dinners. Andy also chaired
the board’s Power Boat committee and a
too-short-lived Polar Bear water ski series.
With his wife, Suzanne Boucher, the couple
are Over-the-Bottom regulars in RUBY RED,
their classic 1976 Century Resorter, and in the
winter, participants and leaders (at Alpine and
Heavenly) in the club’s Penguin ski program.
A graduate of the University of California,
Berkeley (BS in business administration/finance and marketing), Andy is a co-founder
and partner at Tradewinds Capital Management, LLC, a merchant banking firm focused
on privately-held, growth-oriented companies.
Andy, Suzanne, and Ruby, the Newfoundland,
commute between homes in Walnut Creek and
Carnelian Bay.

Wicked wins Trans Tahoe by five seconds
D
riving his sleek red Farr 36 sloop, Wicked,
skipper Richard Courcier won the 48th
annual Trans Tahoe sailboat regatta Saturday,
July 10, with only 5 seconds to spare.
Completing the 30
nautical mile course in
04:27:47, Wicked edged
out last year’s winner,
August Ice, the 41-foot
J/125 owned by TYC
member Dick Ferris.
Although August Ice
was first over the finish
line, the handicapping
from Jim Mullen, system used by Tahoe

Yacht Club scored
co-chair
Wicked the winner by
five seconds, the closest finish in more than 15 years for the Trans
Tahoe.
Courcier commented after the race that
his crew used a stopwatch to measure the difference in finishing times for their boat and
August Ice and figured that Wicked had won
by 2.5 seconds. Nobody knew the official
results until Sunday’s awards luncheon at the
club when Wicked, co-owned by TYC member
John Corda, was announced the next name to
be engraved on the three-foot tall Jake Obexer
Memorial Trophy.
Third place overall went to Racer X,
the Farr 36 skippered by TYC member Gary
Redelberger, who finished 07:46 behind the
winner.
“Conditions for the race were ideal: steady
winds, clear sky, and flat water—a perfect day
on Lake Tahoe,” said Jim Mullen, regatta cochair “ Redelberger said his instruments measured peak wind speed at 23 knots, and Staff
Commodore Les Bartlett—the fourth place
finisher and previous four-time winner—noted
that the sailing conditions were absolutely
perfect and were the best he had experienced
in his more than 40 years of racing in the Trans
Tahoe.

Week and Trans Tahoe Melges division
T
YC sail chair Dan Hauserman won the hotly contested Melges 24 division and the eight-race
Tahoe Melges Race Week, one of four events in the Melges California Cup competition which
TYC conducted simultaneously with the Trans Tahoe. Hauserman’s Personal Puff won by an
amazing 11:38, winning the third in the series of Melges Race Week, which began on Thursday,
July 7 and concluded the Trans Tahoe on July 9.
All three days of hotly contested racing saw winds ranging from 5 upwards to 20 knots.
Following Hauserman in the California Cup top five: San Franciscans Erwan le Gail (Abordage)
and Kristian Notto (American Lady) in second and fourth place respectively; David Joyner of
Tiburon in Flying Circus in third place and TYC’s Steve McMillan taking fifth place in Mako.
The California Cup is a top level circuit for Melges 20, 24, and 32 sportboats, sailed at select
destinations. The first of the four race series was held in March, sponsored by Santa Barbara Yacht
Club, followed by the second stop at San Diego Yacht Club in April. The fourth and final race will
be in the Bay, August 19-21, hosted by San Francisco Yacht Club.

topped Keelboat Division 3 with a corrected

In the Multihull division, Paul Martsen
from Southern California won with his Corsair
31 Drei and also won the Tahoe Yacht Club’s
beautiful new glass trophy for the first-place
Corsair multihull. In the Corsair 24 division,

In all, 38 boats registered
for the annual invitational
regatta with a number of visiting Melges and Corsairs from the Bay and as far south as San Diego.
“We had tremendous cooperation this year from Tahoe City Marina who
provided a number of slips and buoys at no charge to our visitors from
outside the Basin.”
With a reversed start and good winds, all were over the line
within one to one-and-a-half hours of the posted 1200. The new starting
sequence, allowing the slower boats to go off first, got good reviews,
according to Mullen, and may be repeated next year. Other things being
worked on for 2012 are plans for the multihulls and more one designs.

10th annual Rowing
Regatta a success

A
fter several years of less than stellar weather, June 18 gave our North Tahoe Rowing
Regatta near-perfect rowing conditions — cool
and clear with next-to-no-boat traffic. Conditions were so great that we had a course record
broken: the short course open water women’s
double record was broken by almost 3 minutes
by Jessica Gammell and Vanessa Marlin of
South End Rowing in San Francisco.
The good weather also helped in the celebration activities for our 10th annual Regatta.
Those who stopped by the club on Friday evening saw our decorations and anniversary cake.
On Saturday, our traditional post-race picnic
included additional “special” awards and celebratory toasts. All were in good spirits!
Thanks, as always, to TYC staff for their
help with the event as well as TYC chase boaters Commodore Hank Upton and Larry Tomlinson, and Staff Commodore Rich Stout’s
Navy Blue committee boat. Next year’s race
will be held Saturday, June 16, for anyone who
would like to help out— or participate. See you
on the water!

Opening Day of the Bay on May 1 with our

time-honored start of the boating season.
A rewarding event sponsored by PICYA
is Wheelchair Regatta held on September 24
at Encinal YC. This event provides veterans
residing in Northern California an opportunity
to experience a cruise on San Francisco Bay
followed by a picnic luncheon with entertain-

(RBOC)
There is good news to report. With the
passing of the California state budget, funding for Department of Boating and Waterway
(DBW) was not reduced and remains at $68
Million. Also for those of you with boats
in salt water, SB623 which would eliminate
the use of copper in anti-fouling paint was
amended to allow for the application of paints
using low-leaching, low-level copper. RBOC
is urging that the bill be amended to include
the following provisions:
• Ensure that any ban on the application
of copper-based anti-fouling paints be
accompanied by a finding that alternatives are available, affordable and effective.
• Ensure that any ban would apply to all
vessels that contribute copper to the
waterways.

he Over-the-Bottom kick off party on June
24 was a huge success with more than
40 members attending. The highlight of the
evening was the wonderful array of appetizers
prepared by Bill Mann and others.
Saturday, June 25, saw more than 14
boats show up for the first event. When the
results were announced, there were 8 boats
finishing under one minute and the winner,
Bill Mann, came in 8 seconds off the mark.

he Eagles just finished the first of four golf
games this summer. Twenty ladies and gentleman signed up and 16 (4 foursomes) played
Northstar-at-Tahoe’s beautiful course on Friday, June 24. Fun was had by all.
The format was a scramble, best ball
of the foursome. The winning team was two
couples - Keith and Susie Mason and Fred and
Lynn Hurst. Their score was a 6 under par. This
group should also get an award for having the
most fun. Their laughter was heard all over the
course as the ladies kept sinking 10-foot putts.
Longest drive went to Paul Selak for the
men (he was the only one who could keep the
ball in the fairway) and to Margaret “Long
Ball” Twomey. She out-drove even the men

wind-aided shot by Doug Brown which landed
30 feet 3 inches from the hole.
Everyone liked the format, the Northstarat-Tahoe golf course and, of course, the fellowship. It was a fun time. And like our winter Penguin group, all participants thought we
should have an Eagles’ potluck back at Tahoe
Yacht Club after the event. “Mexican” is our
theme for our second tournament on July 29.
