Mishcon de Reya About Walpole W alpole is a non-profit making organisation that furthers the interests of the British luxury industry by harnessing and sharing the collective knowledge, experience and resources of the membership – over 180 British luxury brands committed to combining the best aspects of innovation, design, quality, tradition and service. Formed in 1990 by top-tier British companies, including British Airways, Chewton Glen, Coutts, DAKS Simpson, the Financial Times, The Savoy Group and William Grant & Sons, the membership provides a community for the exchange of best-practice ideas, to drive business development in both the UK and export markets. Programme criteria I n order to be eligible for the programme, selected companies need to exemplify the highest standards of quality, style and craftsmanship and aspire to develop into full Walpole members. The key criteria include: • Annual turnover of more than £100,000 but no more than £2million • An entrepreneurial management style • A clear vision of the future of the brand • Commitment to a two-way partnership in the programme, which will include active participation and regular constructive feedback with the Walpole mentors. Inspired by his family’s rich history in design and fashion, Otis trained at the prestigious Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London. In 2008, he launched Otis Batterbee London. Designed and made in England, its products range from smart wash bags and grooming accessories, fine pocket squares and fabric-covered cufflinks, to lavender-filled eyemasks and travel cushions for the seasoned traveller. By combining innovative cutting with masterful drapery, he crafts desirable timeless garments in the most luxurious fabrics. Osman designs through instinct, his pieces reflecting a deep-rooted design sensibility. British-born Osman was making clothes from a young age. He and his wife, jewellery designer Annoushka Ducas, established the fine jewellery brand Annoushka in 2009 and John is the chairman of and founder investor in the Bremont Watch Company, which is enjoying remarkable success in Europe, the US and Asia. Most recently Bremont was awarded 'Watch of the Year 2012' at the prestigious UK Jewellery Awards. His development of Links of London, which he sold in 2006, has been a case study for many aspiring British companies. John was awarded an MBE in the 2012 New Years Honours list. Martin Bartle Founder, Arthur Ridley Esq Martin Bartle is one of the UK’s internet pioneers. Starting out running electronic democracy projects on the internet in the early 90s, he went on to set up one of the UK’s first web design agencies. GILLIAN DE BONO Editor, How To Spend It Gillian de Bono joined the Financial Times in 1994 to set up a magazine department, following the success of a trial issue of How To Spend It for the Weekend FT. Previously, she spent 13 years launching, relaunching and editing women’s glossy magazines. Ms de Bono spent her formative journalistic years at Consumers’ Association, the publisher of Which? magazine, where, as a writer, she was awarded the first Rosemary Goodchild Award in 1986 for the year’s best article on women’s health. She has received three British Society of Magazine Editors awards – as Launch Editor of the Year in 1986 for Essentials magazine and as Newspaper Magazine Editor of the Year in 1999 and 2004 for How To Spend It. Sarah Elton Former Chief Executive, Smythson of Bond Street Having trained with John Lewis and Fitch Retail Design, Sarah Elton joined Smythson of Bond Street in 1991. Appointed Managing Director two years later at the age of 29, Sarah started the expansion of Smythson out of Bond Street, first through concessions, then new stores, including a flagship in New York and an online store. Under her management, new product groups such as handbags, and the Fashion Diary were introduced, so that Smythson managed to attract the young and fashionable again while retaining the cachet and custom of old money. Mark Esiri Former Chairman, Frank Smythson, Chairman, Venrex Investment Management Mark founded Venrex to invest in private companies with growth opportunities. Pamela Harper Chairman of Halcyon Days and Founder of The Library Group Pamela Harper is one of the luxury industry’s most experienced operators, with a 30-year career spanning major brands such as Burberry, Escada, Hermès, Alfred Dunhill and Jaeger. At Burberry, Pamela was a key member of Rose Marie Bravo’s team and played a major role in the initial turnaround of the brand. In a 10-year tenure as Global Senior Vice-President of Accessories and Footwear, she spent over six of those years establishing Burberry as a major global player in accessories. Pamela is currently working with a number of brands in the luxury accessories and lifestyle sector, most notably as Chairman of Halcyon Days and as a Strategic Advisor to Myla. She has also established the Library Group which distributes brands in the UK, Turkey and India. In 2009, Pamela founded The Library Group which advises brands on the global luxury accessories and lifestyle markets. Jonathan Heilbron President and Chief Executive, Thomas Pink Following a successful career in the City, Jonathan moved to Thomas Pink as Finance Director. In 2004, Jonathan became the President and Chief Executive of Thomas Pink, the leading international luxury shirt brand. Thomas Pink has developed over many years into one of the leading British luxury brands inspired by the eighteenth century heritage of Jermyn Street. Milan Pandya Partner, Blick Rothenberg Milan Pandya is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Demetra is also a Non-Executive Director of Capital & Counties Properties, one of the largest listed property investment and development companies in London. She lives in London with her husband and three children. Guy Salter Deputy Chairman, Walpole, Partner, Nyetimber Guy Salter is a luxury expert, manager and investor. Guy got his grounding in retailing and brand development at the Arcadia Group. From there he went to work for HRH The Prince of Wales as Assistant Private Secretary for Industry and Commerce, where, amongst other things, he started Duchy Originals and was awarded an MVO. His entry into the luxury industry came with his appointment as Managing Director of LaurentPerrier. Subsequently, Guy went on to manage the Asprey & Garrard Group and, at a later date, acquired and ran Tanner Krolle. His first spell in private equity was with Ripplewood where he specialised in luxury, fashion and consumer goods. This has continued with RHJ International and others and he is now an active investor in a number of luxury-related and technology businesses. In addition, Guy is partner in Nyetimber, England’s leading sparkling wine producer. JIM SHARP Partner and Co-Founder, Sirius Equity Jim Sharp is a Partner and Co-Founder of Sirius Equity LLP, whose investments include LK Bennett and Jeckerson, the Italian sportswear brand.
