2013 Annual Report Year in Review Dear Friends, The powerful trifecta of volunteers, funders, and Community Partners which fuels New York Cares' efforts was hard at work in 2013. The successes highlighted in this report are a tribute to you. Last year, New York Cares helped 400,000 New Yorkers in need overcome many challenges and move towards a brighter future. Gail B. Harris, Board President • We continued the massive disaster response effort that we launched within hours of Hurricane Sandy’s landfall in October of 2012, and today - more than 22,000 filled volunteer opportunities later - this program is still going strong. • Our Focus Neighborhood initiative helped to build the local volunteer base in the South Bronx, Central Queens, Central Brooklyn, and three regions severely affected by Hurricane Sandy and yielded a 39% growth in New York Cares' volunteer activity in these underserved communities. • In the first year of our School Success Initiative, a program aimed at improving educational outcomes for children living in neighborhoods of highest need, we worked closely with four schools through projects aimed at tackling their unique challenges, serving 400 children and their families. Paul J. Taubman, Board President And these are just a few examples of the good work that your commitment and generosity made possible last year. Finally, this has been a year of transition for New York Cares’ Board of Directors. After 13 years as President, Gail has turned over the reins to Paul, a long-standing member of our Executive Committee and a passionate advocate for our work. Gail guided us through tremendous growth during her tenure; her leadership was instrumental in so many ways, and we are delighted that she has agreed to remain on the Board. With ongoing appreciation and best wishes, Gary Bagley, Executive Director 22 Gail B. Harris Board President (1/2001-1/2014) Paul J. Within this report, you will find examples of how New York Cares engaged diverse stakeholders to take a hands-on approach in tackling these challenges. We’ve also included, along the edge of each page, some of our 2013 program statistics. These numbers convey only a few of the highlights from a very full year, during which New York Cares’ impact and presence was felt throughout the entire city. 400,000 at-risk New Yorkers served Ian Christianson of the New York Red Bulls defends the ball at the reopening of the All American Soccer Club. 4 15,000 volunteers deployed on Hurricane Sandy disaster response projects Hurricane Sandy Response: An Inside Look annually. Yet, of the New York City public school students who graduated on time in 2012, only 22% earned scores high enough on their state tests to be deemed ready for college. Moreover, the passing marks belonged mostly to more affluent students, highlighting an achievement gap between rich and poor that plays an all-too-influential role in student success. That’s where New York Cares’ School Success Initiative comes in. In 2013 - the program’s debut year - we focused our efforts on four schools and implemented a variety of programming specifically tailored to meet the students’ education needs and the schools’ goals. We also mobilized volunteers to provide individualized tutoring and to train parents and guardians to engage fully in their children’s education. With early signs pointing to real student performance improvement at participating schools, the School Success Initiative has plans to expand to eight schools in the coming year. « Companies Supporting Their Communities In 2013, New York Cares’ Corporate Relations team worked hand-in-hand with our corporate sponsors to create and grow comprehensive and highly successful employee engagement programs. The efforts resulted in some of our most innovative and impactful projects yet. A few examples: • With New York Cares, Morgan Stanley launched an innovative Year Round Partnership initiative that pairs each Morgan Stanley division with a partner agency for one full year. Each division volunteers at its selected agency at least once a quarter, allowing Morgan Stanley employees to learn about and address the agency’s greatest needs and make a long-term impact. • Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal partnered with New York Cares to host a mobile journalism workshop at their offices for a group of high school students from Queens. The editors and reporters used a three-part curriculum, working alongside the teens to film, edit, and produce their own independently reported stories. • On Aero Gives Back Day, more than 500 employees of retailer Aéropostale provided hands-on arts and science enrichment for children and teens (who are the focus of the company’s core business and philanthropy initiatives) including a fashion workshop and an inventor’s challenge for a physics class. 819 companies engaged with New York Cares 39,820 employee volunteer opportunities created for companies 9,700 adults guided through online job searches, mock interviews, and resume prep projects 8,900 clients prepared for success in their new country through English training and conversation programs 7 2,277 youth volunteers engaged « 40 Youth Service Clubs facilitated in schools across the city 318,700 meals served Service Starts Young Our Youth Service Club program inspires public high school students to become lifelong contributors to their communities. New York Cares also engages teens through our Teen Service Team (TST), a group of 12-15 high schoolers who meet weekly to discuss a current social issue before rolling up their sleeves and heading to one of the five boroughs to address it. A TST member describes a particularly impactful experience here: Recently, we partnered with a nonprofit, K.E.E.N. (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now), to work with children with disabilities. Many of these kids have autism, ADHD, or other physical disabilities. We got paired up with the kids, who were given the title "athletes." The athletes got to choose what activity they wanted to do for the day, and we were there to ensure they were safe and having fun. Not only were the kids adorable, they were energetic, and above all, they were filled with joy. The smiles that grew across their faces every time they shot the basketball into the hoop or every time they built a castle, were priceless. The experience was beneficial to the kids and equally insightful for all the volunteers. We learned to be patient, caring, and realized how crucial it is to communicate. 131 parks and gardens revitalized 11,400 homeless animals cared for 8 Partners at a weekly VIP meeting learn about volunteer management techniques. Stronger Partners for a Stronger City Our partners rely on volunteers to meet their missions. In the past year, New York Cares launched two programs to build volunteer capacity where it is needed most. The Volunteer Impact Program (VIP) is an intensive course for nonprofits seeking to build the foundation of a good volunteer management program. It builds off of New York Cares’ 26 years of proven volunteer management strategies. Participants learn how to recruit, manage, and retain volunteers and receive individualized coaching from staff experts. Our Focus Neighborhoods initiative is geared towards building a local volunteer base in the neighborhoods that have traditionally struggled to meet their demand for volunteers. Our on-the-ground teams work with community leaders to direct resources where the most help is required. In the past year, volunteer activity in our focus neighborhoods increased by 39%, and we are committed to the continued promotion and support of volunteer programs in Central Brooklyn, Central Queens, the South Bronx, and areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. 17,300 new volunteers oriented 1,536 dedicated Team Leaders, our volunteers who manage the projects at our partner organizations « 6.2 projects, the average number completed by our volunteers last year 1,377 Community Partners - schools, parks, social service agencies, and other nonprofits - served 9 25 years since the New York Cares Coat Drive first launched 1,106 public and private Coat Drive sites collecting coats 77,133 coats collected and distributed 1.6 million coats provided to New Yorkers since 1989 Annual Event Recap New York Cares Day Spring Four thousand volunteers went to work at 70 sites citywide, including parks, gardens, and ten miles of coastline, on New York Cares Day Spring in April. Love a Library In June, New York Cares worked with all three of New York City’s library systems to help communities rekindle their appreciation for their libraries. Three hundred and fifty volunteers were dispatched to 33 branches of the Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Library to read with children, repair books, and help residents register for library cards. New York Cares Day Fall In October, 6,000 New Yorkers painted murals, repaired playground areas, restored landscaping, and much more, transforming 88 public schools into inspiring learning environments on the city’s largest volunteer day for schools. 10 39,574 Winter Wishes gift requests answered annually.
