Walter Iooss Jr. Walter Iooss was born May 15th 1943 in Temple, Texas, but moved to East Orange, New Jersey at the age of 5. Walter is best known for his photos on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. His first picture to be on the cover of Sports Illistrated was at the age of 20 years old of Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Art Mahaffey. From 1968 to 1972, Walter was an in house photographer for Atlantic Records in New York City. He photographed athletes like James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin. Around 1982 Walter was recuited by fujifilm to work on extended studies on thletes who were preparing for the 1984 Summer Olympics in L.A. This two and a half year project required him to leave his postion on the staff of Sports Illustrated and finished with the publication of the book Shooting for the Gold. During the 1980ʼs Iooss was commissioned to photograph advertising campaigns for Camal cigarettes. Then in 1993 Ioossʼ work was featured on 27 baseball cards in an upper deck set named “The Iooss Collection.” Even though Iooss usually photographs popular athletes and models, Iooss also photographs kids from Cuba playing basketball in the streets, and also trys to catch the “raw desire” of Thai kickboxers. Iooss says “the real joy of photography is these moments. Im always looking for freedom, the search for the one on one. Thatʼs when your insticts come out.” Around 2004 Iooss recived a Lucie award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports Photography.
