What’s New at Heritage Health Care Center OCTOBER 2015 A WORD FROM OUR ADMINISTRATOR CHARLIE LEWIS October is upon us! Football season has started, the World Series is about to begin and the leaves are turning. Apples are being picked, cider mills are open, and pumpkins are showing up on roadside stands. SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST Shopper Service October 2nd, from 9-3 What are your memories of fall? Burning piles of leaves, carving jack-o-lanterns, trick or treating! I recall waiting what seemed forever to be deemed old enough to go pheasant hunting with my dad and Uncle Joe. We had German Shorthaired Pointers, who happen to be the very best upland game dogs on the planet. Fall Bash Oct 21st, 5:30-7:30pm Mom would make sure we had breakfast, the dogs would get so Happy Halloween excited as we put on our vests, and got out the shotguns. As the Costume contest with staff and sun started to come up, we residents on the 30th at 2:00pm would walk out behind our house and walk in a line, with Resident Council Friday Octo- the dogs sniffing and running back and forth. When we got a ber 2nd at 2:00pm in the TR bird, the dog would retrieve it Dept. and bring it to my dad. Residents outing/take-out sign We always walked the whole up sheets posted the 1st of every farm, ending up getting home in month. time for dinner. I learned how to clean and dress the birds, which my mom always managed to make taste wonderful. The dogs would get cleaned up, fed and would be fast asleep and my Dad and Uncle would clean their shotguns, and tell increasingly tall tales about how far the shot was, and reminisce about opening days past. I still have German Shorthaired Pointers, which still prove every year to be the best upland game bird dogs on the planet. I got to hunt with my kids when they were old enough, and even got dad out for one last hunt with me. It was a warm and sunny October day, my Shorthair, Rocco who was an exceptional dog worked back and forth between us, then locked up on point. I asked my dad to move up, then said "Flush". Rocco dove ahead, and a large, beautifully colored Rooster took off in a burst of wing flapping sounds and the distinct cackle into the blue sky. Employee of the Month WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS TO HHCC INSIDE THIS ISSUE: FUNDRAISING THANK YOU’S 2 2 SUGGESTIONS 2 THERAPEUTIC RECREATION 3 EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH 4 6 It seems we both were thinking we were backing up each other, and finally shot at the same time! Dad had tears in his eyes, and told me how this day brought back so many memories, and how special it was to go out with his boy one more time. That made my day, being able to give back a bit to someone who gave me so much. The reason i care so much for our residents is that so many people who nurtured and taught me are gone now, and I can't show them a little caring and compassion. So I try to show it to our residents, who passed on life lessons to so many people in Octobers past. Recipes you must Try!!! Halloween Feel Box Game The Halloween Feel Box Game is a popular game that will have players reaching into dark boxes to feel items like eyeballs, guts, bones, and fingers. The first step is creating your box. You could use tissue boxes, cereal boxes, shoe boxes. You’ll want to cut a hole in each box big enough for a hand to reach into but small enough that you can’t see the contents in the box. Don’t forget to make your box look spooky; painting it black, using duct tape, covering with spider webs. Ideas for what to put inside your Halloween Feel Box; Steamed Cauliflower– Brains Popcorn kernels-Teeth Candy Corn– Vampire Teeth Peeled Tomato– Heart Cooked Noodles– Guts Dried Pasts– Bones Cheese Sticks– Fingers Raisins-Warts Corn Husk Silk– Hair Peeled Grapes– Eye balls Over Cooked Rice– Maggots Fuzzy Pipe Cleaners– Spider Legs Canned Pear halves-Stomach Baby Carrots-Toes Pudding with Peas– Vomit Sliced Melon– Tongue The object to the game is to guess the actual items inside the boxes. Have each participant feel the contents of the box and then write down on a piece of paper what they think the actual item inside the box is. The person who guesses the contents of the most feel boxes is the winner. Since the best part of the Halloween feel boxes is the look on someone’s face when they stick their hands inside, you can really make it more of an experience than a game if you like to set your boxes up on a table and let people stick their hands in at their leisure. Don’t forget to have some paper towels handy for clean up! “Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen.” Sassyeifeclassylife.com EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!!!
