The Skills Funding Agency (SFA) subsidises
our courses, even when a full fee is
payable.
There are three fees for most courses:
•Full fee for residents of the UK or other
EU countries.
•Concessionary fee for:
– non-accredited courses
The Skills Funding Agency will only
fund tuition fees for those on benefits
(see below for details). However, H&F
adult learning and skills service will still
continue to help you financially if you
have been a UK or EU resident for the
past three years and are claiming any of
the following:
- Universal Credit
- JSA
- ESA WRAG
- Housing Benefit
- Council Tax Benefit (not single
occupancy)
- Working Tax Credit
- Income Support
- Pension Guaranteed Credit
- Unwaged dependant in receipt of
any of the above
- Asylum seeker claiming asylum
support assistance.
If you are unemployed and are in receipt
of any other type of benefit (see ‘Help
with fees’ opposite for full details) and
believe the course will help you find
employment then the course may also
be free for you.
•Non EU fee – if you have not been
resident in the UK or EU for the previous
three years a higher fee will be charged.
Please ask as this varies depending on
the course.
•If only one fee is shown for the course,
there are no concessions.
Most fees include basic equipment but you
may need to buy additional materials.
Level 3 courses – we are unable to offer
concessions for level 3 courses, please ask
at interview about sources of funding.
If you are under 19
Our courses leading to qualifications are
designed for adults and we receive no
funding for under 19s. If you are under
19 and interested in doing a course please
contact us for further information.
Exam fees and equipment
For most qualification courses the exam fee
and basic equipment are included in the
published fee. Please ask at interview.

www.hfals.co.uk
– some accredited/qualification

there is a handling fee of 1.25%.

course can apply to pay in instalments.
Please ask when enrolling.
Invoicing your employer
We can invoice your employer for course
fees. You must bring written proof that
your employer agrees to pay and an
additional fee of £25 is charged for
administration.
Refunds
A full or partial refund of your course fee
will only be made when:
1. We close, merge or reschedule your
course and you cannot get to the
alternative.
2. There is a medical reason supported by
a certificate or doctor’s letter.
An administrative charge of £10 will be
made for this refund. We do not provide
refunds where individual sessions have to
be cancelled, but will make every effort to
offer an alternative session. For refunds
within the above categories:
•If the admin manager approves your
refund it will be processed and a cheque
sent to you.
Learner Support Funds
The learner support funds fall into two
categories which are funded by the
Skills Funding Agency to assist learners
who are not able to pay for essential
equipment/materials, travel costs,
childcare, registration fees and other
necessary expenses. These categories are:
•Discretionary Learner Support
Fund (for courses up to and
including Level 2).
•The 24+ Adult Learning Loan
Bursary (ALLB) (for learners who
are in receipt of an Adult Learning
Loan for the full fees of the course
from the Student Loans Company).
These funds are only available to
learners studying towards an approved
qualification and who are on a low
household income of under £20,000.
Parental income will not be taken into
consideration but the income of any
spouse or partner will.
Proof of low income must be attached
to your application. Please discuss this
with your tutor at interview.
•Applications are considered on a
yearly basis from August to July.
There is no automatic entitlement
to access these schemes and it is
operated on a first come, first served
basis. This means that if there are a
lot of applications the fund may run
out during the year.
•If you paid by debit /credit card, we are
only able to give you a refund directly
onto the card you originally used.
•Students must submit a separate
application for each course.
•Please note where a refund is approved,
we are able to do this immediately for
card payments but for fees paid by cash
or cheque, it will be processed within
one week (at the beginning of terms this
process may take longer).
What costs can
be claimed?
Please note:
Fees are correct at time of going to
press. In exceptional circumstances
however we may need to update the
amounts to be charged. You should
check that you have the correct fee
before enrolling.

•Celebrating learners’ success at events

We are committed to safeguarding young
people and vulnerable adults, and also to
providing a safe and secure learning
environment for all learners. We work with
the local safeguarding boards and recruit
and train staff in line with current legislation.
If you have any concerns about the
treatment of young people, or of vulnerable
adults please contact eamon.scanlon@

safety issues, please contact a member of
staff as soon as possible.
From 1 July 2015, Parliament places a
statutory requirement on the Council to
“have due regard to the need to prevent
people from being drawn into terrorism.”
‘Prevent’ focuses on supporting and
protecting people who might be susceptible
to radicalisation. Our Adult Learning &
Skills Service uses established safeguarding
processes to ensure awareness of ‘Prevent’
for both staff and learners and so help divert
potentially vulnerable people from becoming
involved in extreme or radical groups.

Arts and Crafts
Adult learning is a great place to start
or continue to enjoy developing your
creativity and learn new skills.
Our Arts and Crafts department offers
many opportunities to study a variety
of subjects taught by professional
practitioners in excellent, specialist
rooms.
We have planned a variety of drawing
and painting classes also jewellery,
beading, mosaic, stained glass,
clothes making, interior design,
woodwork and furniture making,
pottery and lots more. Most classes
are 11 sessions long but we also offer
shorter courses. Many of these focus
on particular techniques that aim to
give people an opportunity to study a
specific aspect of art or a craft.
Many of our learners make work or
items for themselves or their homes
progressing to make things for their
friends. Others go on to higher
level study or begin working for
themselves.

First commission for
stained glass student
A couple of years ago I
thought I would try a stained
glass course. I decided to join
Tim’s class at Hammersmith
& Fulham because I wanted
to learn how to make a
leaded panel and also to
try some of the advanced
techniques which were
offered on his course. I was
in the process of thinking
about what to do as a
project when a friend who
lives in a Norfolk village
called Shouldham gave me
an unexpected first commission.
My friend told me that the last
remaining pub in Shouldham, the
Kings Arms,had closed and the
village had decided to buy it and
run it as a community pub (the story
behind this enterprise can be found
on the website of the Eastern Daily
Press http://edp24.co.uk/1.3768972)
Part of the new pub would have a
café and my friend asked if I could
make a stained glass window.
After consultation with the village
committee I came up with a design
and spent a term making the
window which is shown opposite.
Another image of the window can be
seen on the website for the pub http:
kingsarmsshouldham.co.uk/cafe/
I really enjoyed the stained glass
course at Hammersmith and Fulham
and I am keen to build on my skills
and I have started to incorporate
some of the techniques into my work.

Murdell Codner
Before I’d finished the
course I’d found a good job
I heard about the health and social
care course when a prospectus
dropped through my door. I read a
student story and thought – I want
to do that, so I rang up straight
away. I was asked to come in and
have a chat with someone about
the course which I did. They were
friendly and encouraging and I
started in September.
I have one daughter of 27 and have
worked for many years as a carer, but
I wanted to have a career, not just a
job so I knew I had to study and gain
a qualification. The company I was
working for was planning to do an NVQ
in care but as it didn’t happen and I
liked the sound of Macbeth Centre
I enrolled on this course. I was very
nervous because I left education 20+
years ago and although I’ve done a few
short courses such as IT this was more
daunting as it’s a qualification course.
But I didn’t need to worry as the tutor is
fantastic and very supportive and many
of the other students are returning
adults so we’re all in the same boat.
Entry to Care level 1 CACHE is widely
recognized as a quality, prestigious
accredited course. It also covers
working with adults and children
(babies to old age) which is what
I wanted as it gives me plenty of
opportunities. Apart from the obvious
care units, we also covered a range of
topics including, communication, the
different types of provision, human
growth and development, person
centred support and equality and
inclusion. All were interesting and I’m
pleased they were part of the course.
Before I’ve even finished the course
I’ve found employment and start in a
month. Whereas I was only working
with adults, now I have the option
to also work with children which I’m
really looking forward to. I will be
working for Active Assistance and
after completing this course I find I
am better paid and now have strong
career and progression opportunities
which I didn’t have before.
I am happy that I have taken the
opportunity to embark on this journey
and because I’m now full
of confidence to go forward.

I’m now a positive role
model for my children
I live in Hammersmith and
Fulham and have three children
aged 12, 10 and five. I was a stay
at home mother but when the
little one started school I decided
it was time to come to college,
gain some qualifications and
think about the future.
I have only been in this country six
years and I learnt English at the
Adult Learning and Skills Service
here in White City. I have been
helped to progress to the next level
every year and then last year when
I felt my English had improved
enough I started to think about
work and a career. I was given
advice about various options and
I joined the Entry 3 to child care,
which I enjoyed. I delighted when I
passed and this year I progressed to
Level 1 in Care and Social Care.
It’s been hard to juggle family,
children and studying, but I really
wanted to do it and my tutor has
been very supportive. I am now
able to show my children that I am
not only a house wife but can have
a career. I am their role model and
want to set a positive example with
studying and work. If I do this they
will think like me and work hard
at school. The course has been
interesting and I’ve loved it. The
52
other students are wonderful and
we all support each other – we have
really jelled into a good group.
I started a job about five months
ago working as a carer for an old
lady. At the moment I work sixteen
hours per week but as my children
grow I will work longer hours, but
right now it works well with school
hours. In addition to this course I
also do reading and writing which I
intend to continue with until I pass
my GCSE.
The centre here at White City is
fantastic and I recommend it highly.
A big thank you to all the staff and
students here.

Earn while you learn
– it’s been brilliant
Kenny Morris
“I grew up in Fulham and went to Ashcroft
Academy. When I left school I had a series
of part time jobs working on various
exhibitions, many of which were at Earls
Court. Although very enjoyable I wanted
something permanent, challenging and IT
based.
Finding myself on job seekers allowance
I was told about a large jobs fair at
Hammersmith Town Hall, which I went
to. I met Lesley Grant who told me about
the benefits of apprenticeships. I liked the
idea of training in a real job and having the
opportunity to attend college one day per
week to gain more qualifications.
I applied, was interviewed and offered
a post in the main Adult Learning and
Skills Centre at Macbeth Street. I’m an IT/
business administrator based on the front
line dealing with queries and enrolments.
This allows me to use a lot of my IT skills
with the management information /
database system.
I’m proactive which has meant that I’m
always busy and never bored. My role
is varied and interesting and I’ve learnt
so much. The apprenticeship lasts for
one year and I’m confident that having
gained more qualifications, skills and work
experience I won’t have a problem finding
a new job. It’s definitely helped me mature
and become more of an adult.
I think apprenticeships are an ideal way to
earn and learn and I have recommended
them to friends.”

Interpreting courses
Choose from year-long, short and one-day courses covering a wide range of
interpreting skills. Community Interpreting
This is the most practical course for anyone wishing to start a career in interpreting.
The community interpreting course is over two terms (about 6 months) and all
interested students must attend a pre-course interview before being allowed to join
part 1. There is no final exam: learners work throughout the course on a portfolio
of work (assignments, role-plays, presentations, glossaries etc.) to be submitted for
external verification. Successful learners will receive a Level 3 certificate in community
Interpreting accredited by OCN LR which is the standard entry requirement most
interpreting / translation agencies expect nowadays.

Nichaela Essex
This year I am on the café project
with Andy which is an employment
skills course. This class has
helped me to learn how to cook
using correct health and safety
rules. One day a week I work in
the Adventure Café in White City
to prepare meals, drinks and cakes
for customers. In the Wednesday
afternoon café class I work on my
customer service, cooking skills
and health and safety skills.
I also do the All Welcome IT class on
Friday taught by Chris. In this class I
have learnt how to use the internet.
For example, I am able to use the TFL
website to find directions from my
college to museums around London.
This has helped me search for things
on my own computer at
home.
I now live
on my own and
don’t rely on
people as much
as I used to.
I like to make new things and be
creative so I did a jewellery class too.
The jewellery I made, made me very
proud and I gave them as gifts to my
close friends and family.
When I finish my course this year, I
plan to get as many qualifications as
possible from the Macbeth Centre to
find myself a job.
I have been coming to the
Macbeth Centre since 2013,
doing All Welcome classes
then Pre-Employment Skills
courses in IT, Independent
Living, Number Skills
and now the Café Project.
Independent Living
has helped me be more
independent since moving
here from St Helena. I now
live on my own and don’t rely
on people as much as I used
to. This course has helped
me develop my confidence to
become more independent.

This is my first year at the Macbeth
Centre and I have learnt so many new
skills from all the different courses.
I am doing an Inclusive Computers
course. I really like this class because
I get on well with many students in
my class and have learnt how to use
the computer to do research, use copy
and paste, and the paint program to
illustrate poems that I typed myself.
All of my teachers are very helpful, nice
and always there to support me with
whatever I need help with. I get extra
help by going to the Study Support
classes run by Lee. I get extra time
as well as support, this helps me be
more confident. My tutor Andy has very
kindly got me a big keyboard to help
me see the screen and buttons better.
I also do the Café Project with Andy. I
really enjoy learning to cook something
new every week. I am very excited when
I am given the chance to choose what
we will be cooking. I really enjoy going
to the adventure café on Thursday’s
where I meet new people I have never

met before and serve them food that
they want. This makes me feel like I
have a real job, dealing with customers
and making sure they are happy with
the food that I make. I have also learnt
how to take their money and work out
the right change to be given back to
them with the help of my tutor. This
really helps when I’m going shopping
and cooking things at home which my
dad likes.
I really enjoy my courses at the
Macbeth Centre and I definitely want to
come back for more classes next year.

Class visits
I often organise trips to London theatres to see classical and
modern ballets, or contemporary dance performances. This year
in the Autumn term we went to see Cats and in the Spring term we saw
English National Ballet performing a triple bill entitled Modern Masters,
showcasing work from Jirí Kylián, John Neumeier and William Forsythe.
Each time we have gone to a show the whole group, staff and students
alike, have enjoyed themselves tremendously. Seeing
professional dance
in this environment
gives a deeper
understanding of
the context of the
skills and
techniques the
learners are
practising in class,
and learning those
skills gives an
added appreciation
for what they see
on stage.”

Coming to an English
(ESOL) Family Learning class
has helped me find work
When I moved to London five years
ago I spoke almost no English.
I found a job as a care assistant
in Surbiton and started to learn
English. It was hard; I was working
70 hours per week but living in
Hammersmith the travelling took
too much time, so I found another
job nearer home through Care UK.
I work for a family who own a shop
in Fulham called Wilko. It’s a new
company selling home products. They
are a lovely family and have been
flexible about hours so that I can
continue coming to class and I am
very happy about this and because
they are a growing company there are
opportunities to progress.
After I had my daughter, studying,
working and looking after her became
too hard to manage and I lost my job.
Financially it was a disaster. I sold
my car in Poland and my mother sent
me money. Staff at Flora Gardens
Children’s Centre, were incredibly
supportive and helped me access
food from the Food Bank. I was
unable to pay my rent and I received
an eviction notice. I signed up with
many employment agencies and at
interviews I used everything that
Ozge my tutor had taught me. At the
sixth interview I was offered a job.
When I started the course I listened
but didn’t speak. Now I use my
English every day at work. I think
everyone should go to school to learn
English or they won’t find a job.
My daughter attends the crèche
here which is wonderful, without
it I wouldn’t be able to continue to
improve my English. I say a big thank
you to my tutor Ozge and the staff at
Flora Gardens – they have helped me
turn my life around and the future is
looking very positive.

My name is Aziz. I
lost my job because
I could not speak English
well and I could not use
computers. So I started
taking maths and English
courses at ACLC. I started at
the bottom. In March 2015
I started working one day
a week at a charity shop to
get more experience and
more confidence speaking
English. I want to find a
good job. I am happy
because my courses helped
me speak better and I am
confident I can write some
words. I will keep taking
maths and English courses.”
