CONTRIBUTING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARMENIA Yerevan Armenia 2014 1 Dear Friends, We set out on a journey a few years ago with a group of like-minded individuals to foster the growth of sustainable development in Armenia and to help the country move from survival to prosperity. Initiatives for Development of Armenia (IDeA) focuses on the implementation of large-scale projects, designed to advance Armenia, with its ancient history and rich culture, as a modern nation. Below please find a brief overview of IDeA’s projects in Armenia, which are being carried out thanks to the generosity of many people from around the world. We are deeply grateful to those who support IDeA’s projects and vision, and are confident that our joint efforts will contribute to Armenia’s bright future. Veronika Zonabend and Ruben Vardanyan 2 DILIJAN Dilijan is located on the ancient silk route at a crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and Russia and has a rich history as a popular resort which attracted many famous people by its natural beauty. It has a great potential to become a major tourist destination. Dilijan Development The Dilijan Development project aims to build up the cultural, educational and resort hub of Dilijan. The main areas of activity are the enhancement of urban infrastructure and services; education, culture, and social life; establishment of educational, scientific and cultural infrastructures in the city and surrounding communities; preservation of cultural and historical heritage; and participation in local community life while promoting its development. Estimated cost: $250 million Project start: 2014 Project end: ongoing Funds raised as of 1 September 2014: $100 million Total number of donors who have contributed to the project: 5 UWC Dilijan College UWC Dilijan will play a major role in the development of Dilijan. It already contributes to the region’s economy and provides major employment. The school’s mission is to work, through education, towards fostering sustainable social, economic and environmental development, and to promote peace in the region as well as the world as a whole. The school will become an important centre for building the Dilijan community and developing activities especially for children. Estimated cost of the construction: $190 million Estimated annual cost of operation: $8 million Project start: 2006 Construction end: 2017 Funds raised as of 1 September 2014: $85 million Total number of donors who have contributed to the project: 201 3 HALIDZOR STATION TATEV REVIVAL PROJECT The Tatev Revival Project is designed to revitalise the IX century Tatev Monastery and its surrounding region, highlighting its religious, academic and cultural legacy, and making it a world-class destination. The project consists of several components: restoring the monastery, reviving its monastic and scholarly tradition, and developing tourist attractions and infrastructure in the adjacent villages, including the world’s longest aerial tramway. Built in 2010 the tramway was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest reversible cable car. This project is a public-private partnership and the Armenian Government has invested $10 million in its implementation. Estimated cost of the project: $80 million Project start date: 2008 Project expected finish date: 2017 Funds raised as of 1 September 2014: $2.4 million Total number of donors who have contributed to the project: 146 4 KARABAKH IDEA together with the Government of Nagorno-Karabakh are developing an Eco-village in the beautiful mountainous Askeran region of Karabakh. The aim of the Eco-village is to establish a sustainable project engaging the local population that creates and offers work opportunities, respects local history, protects and nurtures natural resources, guarantees income and prosperity on a long term basis as well as encouraging tourism. Estimated cost: $50 million Project start date: 2014 Project expected finish date: 2020 Funds raised as of 1 September 2014: $5 million Total number of donors who have contributed to the project: 3 5 SURB GEVORG CHURCH RESTORATION (Tbilisi) The project to restore the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Holy Church in Georgia – church Surb (Saint) Gevorg in Tbilisi – was initiated by a special fund that was established to support the reconstruction of Surb Gevorg church and putting it on a strong financial footing. A significant part of Armenian religious tradition, it involves restoration of the building itself as well as murals and other religious objects.
