MUSIC OF LIVING
Concordia
Featuring Nanette Jensen, piano
Giver of life, Creator of all that is lovely,
Teach me to sing the words of your song;
I want to feel the music of living
And not fear the sad songs,
But from them make new songs
Composed of both laughter and tears.
Teach me to dance to the sounds of your
world and your people,
I want to move in rhythm with your plan;
Help me to try to follow your leading,
To risk even falling,
To rise and keep trying
Because you are leading the dance.

past roles include Amy in Mark Adamo’s
Little Women, Cunegonde in Bernstein’s
Candide, La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi,
Marianne in Tartuffe, Gretel in Hansel and

Ms. Heath has also frequented the concert
stage as the soprano soloist in Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mozart’s Requiem, Brahms’
German Requiem, Handel’s Messiah,
Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42, Howells’ Hymnus Paradisi and in the Fauré and Rutter
Requiems. Ms. Heath has been a state finalist and district winner in the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions.
In 2012 and 2014, she was a regional finalist in the National Association of Teachers
of Singing’s biennial art song competition.
In 2010, Ms. Heath was the soprano
soloist in Ballet West’s production of Carmina Burana, John Rutter’s Mass of the
Children with the Salt Lake Choral Artists
and in Scarlatti’s Christmas Cantata with
the Salt Lake Symphony. In 2011, Ms.
Heath sang the title role in Monteverdi’s
L’incoronazione di Poppea with the University of Utah’s Lyric Opera Ensemble,
and Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto with La
Musica Lirica in Novafeltria, Italy. She
also performed Schubert’s Shepherd on
the Rock with clarinetist Robert Walzel
and pianist Jeffrey Price as part of the Sundays@7 concert series at the University of
Utah. 2012 performances include Carmina
Burana with the Alpine Masterworks festival, Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras

Orchestra, and Handel’s Messiah with the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Utah Symphony.
Ms. Heath, whose singing has been
described as "gorgeous, wonderfully expressive, lyrical and infused with feeling,"
received her Bachelor’s degree in voice
from Brigham Young University, where
she studied with Drs Rebecca Wilberg
and Lila Stuart-Bachelder, and sang for
four years with BYU Singers. She holds
an MM and a DMA in voice from the University of Utah, where she studied with
Dr. Robert Breault. She currently teaches
at Utah Valley University.
DAVID YOUNG first discovered the
power and beauty of the pipe organ as a
teenager. He pursued private organ study
during high school in Boise with Patricia
Nelson and later continued his studies at
the university level.
As a student at Brigham Young University, Mr. Young studied with Dr. Doug-
las Bush, and later graduated from BYU
with a Bachelor's degree in Organ Performance and Pedagogy in 1997. While an
undergraduate student, Mr. Young served
as Organ Scholar at the Cathedral of the
Madeleine (Roman Catholic) in Salt Lake
City, accompanying the choirs and congregation in masses, special feast days,
and in concert.
During his university studies, Mr.
Young also travelled to Europe where he
studied and played over 60 historic pipe
organs, in Germany, Holland, England,
France and Italy. He later received a university stipend to return to Germany and
Holland to study the pipe organs of the Baroque organ builder, Arp Schnitger.
After completing his undergraduate
studies, Mr. Young enrolled in law school
at the University of Idaho, where he graduated with a law degree in 2001. Simultaneously both an attorney and an organist,
Mr. Young has nearly always held an appointment as an organist while also practicing law.
Currently, Mr. Young serves as
Principal Organist at Boise First United
Methodist Church (the "Cathedral of the
Rockies"), a post he has held since 2010.
As organist, Mr. Young accompanies the
traditional worship services on the Cathedral’s 77-rank Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ–Idaho's largest–and including accompaniment for the resident choirs.
He is employed as a Deputy Attorney
General with the Idaho Attorney General's
Office, and also stays active in the local
chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He and his wife, Adria Belnap, live in
Boise with their three children. In February, Mr. Young will perform a solo organ
concert, titled Something Serious, Something Fun, at the Cathedral of the Rockies
as part of its Cathedral Concert Series. The
February 13 organ concert is designed to
appeal to organists and non-organists.

Beating The Odds
According to Bloomberg, eight
out of ten startups fail in the first 18
months. Some Gallup studies show
that half of startups fail in their first
five years. Regardless of the source,
the outlook for startups doesn't
look good.
But we are still here!
At five years old, we're still a
young organization. We've been
pleased to discover that we knew
more than we thought we did. But
we've also discovered a whole lot of
what we didn't know too!
As we’ve thought about why
we've made it to year five, we've
also thought a lot about what has
made us successful. We don't think
it's been our venues, our music selection, our policies, or our tours.
Sure, these things may contribute,
but we believe it all comes down to
the people.
Community is formed by people who value or love the same
things. Cantus is a community of
people who love excellence and
work together to create a place
where everyone can belong. Because of our board, our directors,
our volunteers, work-study staff,
the parents, youth, and the families
that have all come together, we have
not only survived, but sur-thrived
year over year for the last five years.
It is because of all of YOU that we're
still here, and we look forward to a
bright future together.
Special Thank Yous
We would like to thank our

Our Origination
In the beginning, we spent a full
year actively planning and developing this concept, and for the longest
time, we referred to it as “the choir.”
We researched community
choirs across the nation, IRS forms
and filing statuses, organizational
hierarchies, and even interviewed
people (without them knowing it!)
to be on the Board of Directors.
After spending a long time
thinking about what “the choir"
would be called, we finally found a
name that we liked: Cantus.
Cantus is Latin for "chant,"
or "sing." We loved this name,
and having sung a lot of Latin, we
thought nothing of how it might
be pronounced! We've heard a lot
of fun pronunciations of this word:
can-toos, or can-tuss, and Keith’s
personal favorite can't-us.
The best way to remember how
to pronounce this word is to put the
emphasis on the first syllable and
say kahn (like Genghis Khan) toos
(rhymes with noose).
Go ahead, try saying it out loud
... unless of course the lights are
down and the concert's begun.
Our Mission
Cantus Youth Choirs is a community choral program for youth
of Idaho’s Treasure Valley. Cantus
Youth Choirs strives to provide
quality music education with the
goal of attaining the highest level of
artistic excellence in choral music
performance.
The organization endeavors to
enrich the lives of youth from all
cultural, economic, musical, racial,
and religious backgrounds. Cantus
strives to foster the personal and
social growth of its members and to
promote their sense of self-worth,
discipline, and accomplishment.
Singers in Cantus Youth Choirs
work hard and love music. They
can trust their directors to provide
safe, nurturing environments and,
in turn, the directors can expect
the singers to respect the music,
the director and each other. They
come to rehearsal prepared, ready
to learn and eager to have transcendent musical experiences.
Singers in Cantus Youth Choirs
have high expectations of themselves and their directors, both
personally and musically. And, because of this, they achieve success.

A Look At Last Season
Season 2013-2014 was our
fourth year and started with our
Winter Concert at Borah High
School. We also introduced our
third contemporary ensemble,
Presto, to the mix. We sang a full
concert with Borah High School's
men’s and women's choirs as our
guest artists.
Immediately after our Winter
Concert, we began an aggressive
rehearsal regimen to prepare for
our Spring Concert and Songs of
Hope tour, which took place after
only about seven hours of rehearsal
time! The youth worked admirably,
learning their music over winter
break.
Our Spring Concert was also
held at Borah High School where
Borah choirs and The College of
Idaho Singers, under the direction
of Dr. Brent Wells, were our guest
performers. We ended the concert
with a combined performance of
Ryan Murphy's Pilgrim Song.
Three weeks later we loaded
up our tour buses and headed off
to Oregon. Our first stop was at
the Oregon State Capitol in Salem
where we performed in the acoustically-stunning rotunda. We performed Homeward Bound, Pilgrim
Song, It's Time, Clocks, Just The
Way You Are/Just A Dream, It Takes
A Village, and opened the legislative proceedings with Chorale
and Concert Choir singing Give
Us Hope. They received a standing
ovation and rave reviews from the
Oregon Legislature.
That afternoon, we gathered for
a dress rehearsal with McNary High
School, Whiteaker Middle School
and Straub Middle School for our
Songs of Hope concert, benefiting
Courtney Atack, Oregon resident,
musician and mother of four with
terminal brain cancer.
Courtney came and all 400+
kids were able to meet Courtney
and hear some of her story. She
was so positive and encouraging.
She told the story of how music
has helped her through these challenges. She underwent surgery on
a portion of her brain, an area that
could seriously impact her ability to
make music. She talked about how
terrified she was. When she woke,
she said, "I woke up and started
searching for my music. I could remember all of it." She unashamedly
acknowledged that it was a miracle.
The concert, later that night,
was an amazing success! Each of
the groups performed with heart
and passion. Courtney sang a couple of original compositions, and
joined the choirs as a featured solo-

to Courtney. We ended the show
with a commissioned arrangement
of Martina McBride's Anyway. All
400+ singers, plus mini orchestra
and combo, joined in for this powerful anthem of hope.
The Songs of Hope benefit concert also succeeded in helping the
Atack family. The venue did not
charge us. The concert was completely sold out. Audience members were generous in post-concert
donations. We contacted Courtney's church, her alumni network,
her family, and the community
choir she sings with, and were able
to present her with $5,000 to help
with their many expenses.
The next day, Cantus traveled to
Portland for a Trail Blazers game.
Courtney, Jason and their family
came with us, and during the game,
told Erika and Keith more about
their story and expressed their
gratitude for the generosity shown
to them. .
What to expect in Season V
Every year seems to bring on
something new and exciting! This
year, we are proud to introduce
Bella Visi, our newest (all-female)
contemporary ensemble, directed
by Michelle Pedersen.
Also new to this year, is our twoconcert format. We've determined
that putting together one concert in
each semester is better for the singers. This season, our first semester culminates in tonight's Winter
Concert. Cantus winter break will
begin December 21 and continue
until rehearsals begin again on
Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Boise
First Community Center.
Tour will be during the last half
of spring break. We're excited to be

Cathedral of the Rockies, where
we'll perform our tour music and
additional contemporary favorites.
ETIQUETTE QUIZ
ENJOY CONCERTS FROM
A FOUNDATION OF ETIQUETTE
ANSWERS: 1: B, 2: A, 3: B, 4: C, 5: C
How to enjoy a concert
For the uninitiated, attending a
formal concert can be intimidating.
We rarely have the opportunity to
attend formal gatherings, and we
occasionally feel uncomfortable
at them because we don’t want to
commit the proverbial faux pas and
reveal our uncouthness.
Concert etiquette doesn’t mean
we wear tuxedos and evening
gowns and talk down our noses at
others and poo poo them because
we are so much more cultured than
they. This is far from what concert
etiquette is all about!
Conforming to the rules of concert etiquette allows you and your
neighbors to enjoy the show. It’s as
simple as that...and over the years,
“enjoying” the show has come to
mean that we take care to do nothing that would distract from the
performance. This includes: suppressing all noise, refraining from
eating and drinking, dressing appropriately, and applauding correctly.
Applause is the way that we
show our appreciation to the performers. Applauding at the right
time can get a bit tricky … because
depending on the concert, the appropriate time to applaud can
change.
At a rock concert people often
talk, scream, shout, laugh and even
sing along. This is all appropriate
in this setting. This is usually why
rock concerts are so loud ... the
band is trying to be heard over the
din!
In the formal concert setting,
however, participating in these behaviors is a sure ticket to getting
kicked out! The secret is to sit quietly while the performers perform,
(that IS why you came, right?).
Once they're done, applaud.
In a formal concert, here are
the best times to applaud:
1. When the conductor takes
the stage. It is customary to applaud when the conductor first
comes out onto the stage. This
draws everyone's attention to the
show and recognizes the conductor's efforts at having prepared the
ensemble to perform.
2. After a piece is concluded,
AND the conductor has lowered
their hands. A good rule of thumb:
if the conductor’s hands are up,
yours should probably stay down.
The conductor may want the audience to enjoy a few seconds of
silence before accepting applause.
Sometimes the conductor may
wish to perform a set of songs before accepting applause. This is often done for artistic reasons (and in
some cases, to use less time!)
3. For a soloist. In a formal
concert, applause for a soloist
should be deferred until the end
of the piece. The conductor may or
may not direct the soloist to take a
bow. To ensure that the piece is finished, see 2.
4. After the final piece. Standing ovations, or standing while
clapping, is appreciated if you think
the performance is deserving.
Some audience members think every performance is deserving, and
others feel that they should stand
only if the performance is exceptional. The choice is yours.
Our concerts are about 2 hours
long, and are most enjoyed by children 8 years old or older. Thanks
for coming and enjoy the show!
