Transparent Building Address Esplanada do Rio de Janeiro Porto Portugal . Being part of an urban plan to redesign the westend seafront of the city park, this building serves a shopping centre and leisure centre in combination with seaside activities. The entire building is constructed in white concrete and the façade is made out of pre-fabricated white concrete slabs. The interior offers some interesting spaces that overview the atlantic ocean, creating a lot of shades and light effects on the afternoon. photo: João Sousa . Project is public! . Niterói Contemporary Art Museum Address Mirante da Boa Viagem 24210-390 Niterói Brazil http://www.macniteroi.com.br . The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói, or MAC, in Portugese) is located in the city of Niterói, Brazil. It is set on a cliffside, at the bottom of which is a beach. The saucer-shaped modernist structure overlooks Guanabara Bay, from where on the opposite side Rio de Janeiro and Sugarloaf Mountain can be seen. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer with the assistance of structural engineer Bruno Contarini, who had worked with Niemeyer on earlier projects, the museum is 16 metres high; its cupola has a diameter of 50 metres with three floors and has been likened to a UFO. A wide access slope leads to a Hall of Expositions, which has a capacity for sixty people. photo: Adam Gebrian . Project is public! . . . . . Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge Address Lago do Paranoá Brasília Brazil . The growing city of Brasília needed a third bridge over a lake that separated half its inhabitants from their places of work. In response to a competition, architect Alexandre Chan and structural engineer Mario Vila Verde, both from Rio de Janeiro, produced the winning concept: a daring, dancing variation on an ancient structural form. In the land of Niemeyer, the President Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge feels right at home. The graceful arches of the JK Bridge, as it is known informally, play a joke on the eye. As they cross Paranoá Lake, they abandon any staid, engineered rhythm and instead jump from side to side, like a child hopping across a stream. According to Chan, the idea was to create a landmark for the enjoyment of the community as much as to simply traverse a body of water. He used structural constraints as a means not of restraint but of expression (text from www.architectureweek.com). photo: Raban Haaijk . Project is public! . Catedral Metropolitana Address Avenida Republica de Chile 245 20031-170 Rio de Janeiro Brazil http://www.catedral.com.br/ . The black and massive Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese: Catedral Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro or Catedral de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro), is the seat of the archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The current church was built between 1964 and 1979 and replaced a series of old churches that had served as cathedrals since 1676. It is located in the centre of the city. Conical in form and with a 96 metres (315 ft) internal diameter and an overall height of 75 metres (246 ft), it has a standing-room capacity of 20,000 people. The cathedral's four rectilinear stained glass windows soar 64 metres (210 ft) from floor to ceiling. Underneath the central church space lies the catacombs, where another smaller chapel is located, surrounded by several corridors, encircling the centre. All walls of these corridors are used for burial places. photo: Naomi Schiphorst . Project is public! . Completion 1979 Architect Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca Contributed by NGHM . . . Oi Futuro Telephone Museum Address Rua Dois de Dezembro 63 22220-010 Rio de Janeiro Brazil http://www.oifuturo.org.br . Telemar Institute promoted an Architecture National Public Competition to choose the Telecommunications Museum project. The objective was to reformulate the old Telephone Museum, built in 1918 in Rio De Janeiro. The project concept is the dialogue between the new and the old. The old construction was partially demolished to receive a new mass, in the back of the site, defining three zones in the building: the volume formed by the old building, that was kept with its peculiar characteristics; the new volume, that is different from the old, by a contemporary architecture; the 'empty', formed by the space between the two masses, keeping a harmonic dialogue between the parts. . NAVE Address Rua Uruguai 204 20510-060 Rio de Janeiro Brazil . The same interventionist spirit that was shaped by the renovations and partial changes of the usage of this set of buildings, inspired the visual design adopted by Jair de Souza, who brought the stereotype of the 'digital language' into the school, making the graphics applied walls, ceiling and floor a significant mark on the architecture of the spaces of the NAVE and the Escola Estadual José Leite Lopes. . photo: Marco Milazzo & Associados Project is not public! . Superior Electoral Court of Brazil Address Setor de Administração Federal Sul Quadra 7 70070-600 Brasília Brazil http://www.tse.jus.br/transparencia/nova-sede . The new headquarters of the Superior Electoral Court, inaugurated on December 15, 2011, is located in the Setor de Administração Federal Sul of Brasília. The building comes to compose the architectural complex designed by Oscar Niemeyer to gather all the Brazilian Higher Courts. The contract for the project of the Court new headquarters was signed in the office of Niemeyer, in Rio de Janeiro, on September 22, 2005, the same year of the celebration of 60 years of the Electoral Justice and 45 years of Brasilia. On the day of the meeting, Oscar Niemeyer presented the proposal for a semicircular structure composed of three domes, for the plenary and auditoriums, accessed by an underground gallery. The project surprised even the architect's team, who emphasized the innovative features of the work. "It's a project that I find beautiful and different. I always think so, that Oscar gets older and will always surprising me with new forms. And that shape is a shape I had never seen." photo: Rudolf Noronha . Project is not public! . . . . . MAM - Modern Arts Museum of Rio de Janeiro Address Avenida Infante Dom Henrique 85 20021-140 Rio de Janeiro Brazil . The architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy (1909-1964) was invited in the 1950's to design a new headquarters for the MAM on a 40,000m2 site donated by the municipal authority of Rio de Janeiro, on the Aterro do Flamengo , with a landscaping project by Burle Marx (1909-1994). Works were begun in 1954 and inaugurated at different times: the School Block in 1958, the Exhibition Block in 1967 (with a show by Lasar Segall), while the Theatre Block remains unfinished. Reidy's project followed the suggestions of architectural rationalism that guided various works of his. In the specific case of the MAM, it is worth noting the use of a hollow and transparent structure, the free plan of the exhibition space (which provided for flexibility of museography) and the attention paid to lighting. photo: Rudolf Noronha .
