New record and geographic distribution of Hylodes phyllodes Heyer
Herpetology Notes, volume 6: 387-389 (2013) (published online on 23 September 2013) New record and geographic distribution of Hylodes phyllodes Heyer and Cocroft, 1986 (Anura: Hylodidae) davor vrcibradic1*, Mauricio almeida-gomes2, mara cíntia kiefer3, monique van Sluys2 and Carlos Frederico D. Rocha2 The genus Hylodes Fitzinger, 1826 (Hylodidae), comprising small, diurnal rheophilic frogs, is endemic to eastern Brazil and associated to the Atlantic Forest biome (including areas of Atlantic Forest-Cerrado ecotones) (Laia and Rocha 2012). Most of the known species in this genus occur within an area that encompasses the southeastern portion of São Paulo State, southern Minas Gerais State and the western half of Rio de Janeiro State (see Laia and Rocha 2012). One of those species is Hylodes phyllodes Heyer & Cocroft, 1986, originally described from the Estação Biológica de Boracéia, municipality of Salesópolis, São Paulo State (Heyer and Cocroft, 1986). Subsequent records have extended its distribution both to the east and to the west, including some continental islands (Hartmann, Hartmann, and Haddad, 2006; Canedo and Pombal 2007; Carvalhoe-Silva et al. 2008; Condez, Sawaya and Dixo, 2009; Cicchi et al. 2009; Gründler et al., 2012). One insular record reported by Rocha et al. (1997), however, was based on a population that was later described as a distinct species (Hylodes fredi) by Canedo and Pombal (2007). Herein, we provide a new locality record for this species, expanding its known distribution. The Santuário de Vida Silvestre da Serra da Concórdia (22° 22’ 18” S, 43° 47’ 23” W) is a private reserve situated in the municipalities of Barra do Piraí and Valença, in 1 - Departamento de Zoologia, Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Av. During a herpetological inventory carried out in that area we collected five individuals of H. phyllodes (Fig. 1) between 12 and 14 April 2005 (under collection permit 055/2005 issued by RAN/IBAMA). The specimens (three adult males, one subadult male, one adult female), were all found perched on rocks in lotic forest streams at 650-750 m elevation. They are currently deposited at the amphibian collection of Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ 41675-79). The present report represents the easternmost and northernmost record for H. phyllodes, extending its distribution about 75 km to the northeast of the previous easternmost locality reported for the species (Reserva Rio das Pedras, Mangaratiba; Carvalho-e-Silva et al. 2008) (Fig. 2). Together with the record from the Parque Estadual do Jurupará, in São Paulo State (Condez, Sawaya and Dixo, 2009), it also represents the most inland record for the species, at ca. 60 km from the coast. Furthermore, as can be seen in Fig. 2, all previous records of H. phyllodes came from sites located at the Figure 1. Live adult Hylodes phyllodes from the Serra da Concórdia, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Acknowledgments. We thank Roberto Lamego, director of the Grupo de Proteção Ambiental da Serra da Concórdia, who gave permission and logistic support for us to work at the Serra da Concórdia. Fieldwork at the area was supported by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) and by the Aliança para Conservação da Mata Atlântica (Conservation International - Brazil and SOS Mata Atlântica).
