For over 25 years, the Saturday Enrichment Program has offered unique learning opportunities to over 20,000 highly capable young children. Our instructors develop courses intended to: Expose students to new areas of interest and extend existing understandings Provide intellectual stimulation through interaction with other students with similar interests and abilities Provide learning experiences which challenge the students and target their learning preferences Encourage creative and critical thinking and problem solving Foster skills for independent learning Build collaboration skills Develop habits of mind of the professional in a specific discipline or across disciplines Who should apply? Students in grades K-5 who are currently participating in a gifted program and/or who demonstrate above average abilities and/or achievement in one or more areas should apply. Home school students who exhibit the same characteristics are also welcome to apply. Applicants should demonstrate a desire to learn and the ability to work independently as well as cooperatively in a classroom setting. Previous application or acceptance to the program has no bearing on the consideration of this application. What is the cost? The cost is $175 for one course. How do we pay? If accepted, we will send you information about how to pay. Payment is due upon notification of acceptance and no later than January 4, 2010. Prompt payment prevents forfeiture of your child’s placement. We accept credit card payments online (Visa and Mastercard only), checks, and money orders. UVA requires that you provide your social security number on the check. We will not retain this number in our office. No refunds are possible after January 8, 2010. Are financial scholarships available? $50 scholarships are available for students who are eligible for their school’s free/reduced lunch program; this scholarship reduces the total cost to $125.00 How many courses may students apply for? Students should indicate which classes they would most like to take by prioritizing at least their top 4 choices or more if they wish. Every effort will be made to place qualifying students in their top choice of class. How do I apply? Parents complete Parts I and II of the application form. Your child’s teacher completes Part III of the application form. Send all forms together (Parts I, II, III) to the address listed below. ONLY complete application packets will be considered. Applications are processed once all parts have been received either online or by regular mail. All comments furnished by school personnel are strictly confidential. The SEP staff evaluates recommendation forms, student requests, and class space and makes all acceptance decisions. We make every effort to place qualifying students in one of their top four choices. Applications received after the December 1, 2009 deadline are automatically placed on a waitlist. Space permitting, we will invite students from the waitlist to participate. DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS DECEMBER 1, 2009 Confirmation of acceptance, course assignment, and payment information will be mailed December 21, 2009 Grades K – 1 Two Course Choices: Undersea Explorers Domo Arigato, A Cultural Study of Japan Survival of the Adaptable Journey into the Australian Outback NOTE: Students must be at least five years old by February 1, 2010 and enrolled in kindergarten Undersea Explorers Calling all marine biologists! Get ready to set sail on an adventure into the ocean. In this class, we’ll explore the ocean as an ecosystem. What animals live in deep ocean water versus the surface? How does the ocean sustain life? Using a variety of “minds-on” learning experiences that include the incorporation of music and literature, we’ll learn about that what makes our oceans truly unique. Domo Arigato, A Cultural Study of Japan Have you ever wondered why Japan is known as the “Land of the Rising Sun?” Join me in discovering an answer to this question as we explore idea of culture through the study of Japan. Each week, we’ll learn how cultural elements such as folk tale, geography, the history of Japan work together to make this country unique. You’ll even learn a little Japanese language along the way! Survival of the Adaptable How would you protect yourself on a cold, windy day? How would an animal protect itself? Want to find out the different ways animals adapt to survive in their environment? In this class, we’ll discover the many ways animals react to their changing environment through observation and hands on experiments. Each week we will view animals in their habitat and answer questions about the adaptations they need to survive in a particular environment. Come and join us in our journey of discovery about the animals around us! Journey into the Australian Outback Gooday Mate! Get ready to journey with us on a safari to the Australian Outback, where we will explore the culture of this amazing continent! Each week, we’ll look at different elements of culture ranging from storytelling using Aboriginal icon to life on the Savannah. By the end of this class, you’ll be able to show how the different elements of culture work together to make this continent unique. Be prepared for many hands-on and minds-on learning experiences! Grades 2 – 3 Four Course Choices: Math and Science Mysteries: The Art of Problem Solving Write now! From the Ground Up: Exploring the Origins of Food Math and Science Mysteries: The Art of Problem Solving Do you like to solve mysteries? If so, this is the class for you! Throughout our time together, we’ll explore how scientists and mathematicians think and go about “the art of problem solving.” We’ll ask questions such as: Is there a way to determine when a bubble will pop? How can we design a test to determine which brand of gum is “best?” From just a few clues, using only a few materials, how would you solve a challenging problem? Get ready to answer these questions and more as we design and conduct investigations that pose great mysteries. You’ll leave each class with some amazing experiences to share at home! Write Now! Do you like to write? Have you ever wondered how people (including yourself) express ideas in multiple ways? Join me as we explore the concept of expression through written forms such as advertising, poetry, and news. You will also have a chance to write and express your own thoughts in a unique way. Bring your creativity and imagination and get ready to “write now.” From the Ground Up: Exploring the Origins of Food Where on earth did you get that sandwich? Do you know what goes into your daily bread and meat? In this class, we will embark on a world tour to discover the places where our staple foods and our delightful flavorings originated. Each week, we will discover how a country’s land, climate, and culture work together to produce delicious dishes. Students will become expert food researchers and learn how to report their findings to fellow researchers! Grades 4 – 5 Four Course Choices: The Animal Kingdom: A Strange and Fascinating Place Money and Investments Artistic Style: Are you a Michelangelo or a Pablo? Fractured Fairy Tales The Animal Kingdom: A Strange and Fascinating Place Animals do some strange things; why is it that Beta fish puff up their gills and breathe faster when they see another Beta fish? Why do planarians (flat worms) prefer the dark over sunlight? These questions and more will be answered through scientific investigations that you will design and conduct in our own zoological laboratory. Join me in taking a deeper look at the relationship between the structure, function, and adaptations of a wide variety of animals while making key comparisons between animal species! Money and Investments Where does our money come from and how is it used? In this class, we will begin with learning what money is and how it is created. We will then learn about how money is distributed and will explore various investment vehicles including common securities, bonds, mutual funds, and even options and derivatives. The causes and failures of many of our banks will also be discussed, as well as risk management and insurance. Come and learn what money is all about! Artistic Style: Are You a Michelangelo or a Pablo? What shapes artistic style? What is your artistic style? In this class, we will explore the notion of artistic style by looking closely at the work of experts representing several historical periods. Get ready to dive into the worlds and works of people such as Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Picasso. Throughout our time together, you will have the opportunity to create many masterpieces using the techniques and mediums of these artists while ultimately discovering your own artistic style! Fractured Fairy Tales How would the Prince describe his first meeting with Cinderella? What do you think the Fairy Godmother was thinking? In this class, we will explore the concept of perspective. What is perspective? How does perspective shape our interpretation of a situation? Each week, we’ll use a variety of Fairy Tales representing cultures from around the world to explore these questions and more. Bring your imagination!
