Did you know that visiting the dentist could save your life?
The reason is simple – part of our examination process is to check for signs of oral cancer and
early diagnosis can make all the difference between life and death.
Around 6600 cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year, and these figures are
on the increase. Early diagnosis can improve your chances of survival from 50% to nearer 90%
Those aged over 40 are most at risk, especially if they smoke. Drinking alcohol is also a
contributory factor and if you smoke and drink to excess at the same time you are up to 30 times
more likely to develop the disease.
Early symptoms include mouth ulcers that do not heal, white or red patches, or any other
unusual changes in your mouth. If you notice any of these, it is important to get them checked
out as soon as possible.
During your regular examination we always look for signs of anything suspicious in your mouth
and throat. If we do spot any potential problems, we will advise you immediately and refer you to
see an oral surgeon.

Dentist: Dr Pritesh Bhatt
Practice: Trafalgar, Portsmouth
Treatment: The patient was unhappy with his discoloured and broken teeth and wanted to improve his smile. After discussing
the options with his dentist the patient decided that he would like composite veneers for his top and bottom teeth. The
treatment was successfully completed over 5 to 6 appointments. *
Patient testimonial:
“My granddaughter, on her visit from Australia, said to me ‘Grandad what’s happening to your teeth?’ Indeed, what was happening? They were becoming not only discoloured but quite fragile and chipped. On my next visit to see Dr Bhatt I asked him
if there was something he could do to rectify the problem. After a detailed examination he outlined three options which he
felt were suitable. I said irrespective of the cost if he was in my position which would he choose? His recommendation wasn’t
the most expensive and his honesty and explanation was based on what was best for me. The procedure was long, but on
completion the finished result was outstanding, he had worked a miracle.”
Dr Bhatt’s comment:
“We were delighted to help this patient choose the right option for him and help him get the smile that he wanted.”

The Trafalgar Rowner Team took on the
Portsmouth Pretty Muddy 5k Challenge
In support of Cancer Research
The event took place on Saturday 3 October 2015 at Southsea Common. It was a 5k brilliantly
muddy assault course! The team took on the challenge to raise money for Cancer Research and
have so far raised over £200.
Thank you to everyone who has donated and shown their support. The team were left
exhausted but very proud of their achievement, especially because they managed to complete it
within 50minutes. We think they deserve a big ‘well done’ for getting in that mud and
undertaking a gruelling challenge for such a good cause.
Well done Team Rowner!!

Have you ever
wondered what your teeth
are made of?
Enamel: the tough, shiny, white
outer surface of the tooth
Dentin: the hard tissue found
under the enamel of the tooth.
Dentin is harder than bone!
Pulp: the soft centre of the
tooth. The pulp contains blood
vessels and nerves.
Cementum - a layer of tough,
yellowish, bone-like tissue that
covers the root of a tooth. It
helps hold the tooth in the socket.
