Unfortunately, too many
Americans fail to register to
vote.
According to the California
Voter Foundation, many
attitudes contribute to
infrequent voting and failure
to register. The CVF survey showed that 28
percent of voters are too busy.
I can understand the frustration – with all the
debates and negative ads that we see, it can
make a voter not care.
There are bigger issues today that negatively
affect working people. It is not just between
Republicans and Democrats. Our issues are
prevailing wage, Project Labor Agreements,
health care, pension, education and our
environment. We need to focus on candidates
who care about the issues that affect us.
We have an important primary election coming
up in June. So far, we endorsed candidates who
we know will go to bat for us at the local, state
and federal levels.

We will need help walking precincts, phone
banking or even just placing yard signs. Please
contact our Political Intern Angel Godinez for
dates and events at 619.787.6384. Angel has
been working very hard with our candidates and
helping us in the endorsement process.
Between now and June, our main objective
is to register as many members as possible. As
of today, only 64 percent of our members are
registered to vote.
If you have moved, you need to re-register.
Help us meet our goal this year. We can raise
our voter registration by 20 percentage points.

Vote labor friendly to increase job opportunities
Attention Members – Officer Elections
Dear Ironworkers Local 229,
Local political races can be tight and this year’s mayoral race is a
tight race.
Currently the anti-union candidate Carl DeMaio is polling at 25%
and Bob Filner is polling about 24%.
That is why we are urging all Ironworkers to please register
to vote. There are several projects in the pipeline that really
will need the support of our local politicians, such as the San
Diego convention center, Charger’s stadium, and repairing our
infrastructure. Every vote counts.
Many politicians do not understand the wonderful apprenticeship
programs that unions offer.
Recently, there have been several politicians who have taken the
time and stopped by the Ironworkers Local 229. I would like to
thank Juan Vargas, Marti Emerald and Bob Filner, who relentlessly
fight for working-class families.
The mayoral candidate Bob Filner has officially been endorsed by
Ironworkers Local 229 because he has a proven record of being a
labor-friendly candidate, and in his years of being in politics, he has
always been there when we needed him.
Voting in elections, from local elections to presidential primaries,
provides an important way to voice your opinions.
Voting also helps you decide your own future by electing a
person who might reflect what’s good for you and your job. There
are certain politicians who have been endorsed by the Ironworkers
Local 229 because these candidates have proven to be the best local
politicians for our industry.
It’s your constitutional right that many have fought for and died.
Be a good participating citizen and register to vote today.
Nominations for officers will take place on Friday, May 11,
2012 during the regular membership meeting. The meeting
starts at 7 p.m. and takes place at the union hall, 5155
Mercury Pt., San Diego.
Elections will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2012.
Members can cast ballots from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 2
at the union hall, 5155 Mercury Pt., San Diego.
SD mayor candidate Filner supports workers’ rights
Bob Filner has passionately
supported human and civil rights
his entire life. A Freedom Rider
who spent two months in a
Mississippi State prison in 1961
to protest segregation, Bob has
devoted his career to helping
those in need.
Bob has served as president of
the San Diego Board of Education, deputy mayor on the San Diego City
Council, and chair of the House Veterans Affairs Committee in the U.S.
House of Representatives.
Now in the race for San Diego’s mayor, Bob is the only candidate
who actively supports the rights of workers and Project Labor
Agreements (PLAs) for city projects. Bob believes that it is essential to
keep good-paying jobs within the local community.

is finally starting
to pick up at a slow
but steady pace. The
projected projects are
finally starting, and the
future is looking very bright. Many of our
Ironworkers are going back to work, so
be prepared to come in with your driver’s
license, Social Security card and any
certifications such as welding, Sub Part R,
OSHA 30, Riggers card or any other card
that you might have.
A lot of these cards are required by the
general contractor to be on site.
The welding shop is still open Mondays
and Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for
you, the members, to help you upgrade your
certifications.
Again, I want to stress the importance
of being current on your IMPACT drug
testing. You can call Mobile Medical at
916.333.6403 and check your status. Also,
please keep us informed of any change of
addresses or phone numbers so that we can
reach you should we need to contact you.
