MilIer In about 1962 I read an article by a writer for the International Herald Tribune, Art Buchwald. He wrote that he had a friend who was a nut (crazy) who collected tea-bag tags. They are called tags in the US and labels elsewhere. I said "I am a nut; I drink tea, why don't I collect too?" That is how hobbies start. At the time I travelled a lot as a professional photographer (I am now retired) for advertising, corporate and magazine clients. It permitted me many opportunities to have different teas and collect labels. There were times I would be in a new hotel or restaurant and wanted water or a Coke but If I saw they had a tea label that I didn't have, I would order tea. Many of my friends travelled all over the world, knew of my collection and would send me teabags. At the time, I gave myself a rule; I had to drink the tea myself. I would put the labels in a box and on New Years Eve, I would spread them out on a table, eliminate duplicates and count them. After awhile, the table wasn't big enough and I moved to the floor. People did think I was crazy but this became a New Year's Eve ritual. Years earlier, my wife and I were in a taxi returning from a party, was almost killed and decided on the spot that we were not going out on New Years Eve anymore. Anyone was welcome to come to our home and that is where they knew what they would see; me on the floor sorting and counting tea labels. Over the years three things happened that changed my collecting. I started to put the labels into plastic slide pages which permitted me to eliminate duplicates as I went along. It also permitted me to organize them by US and the rest of the world. Suddenly it gave my collection a whole different look. I could now see styles, design, series and images. It was very much like stamp collecting which I started as a child and still do. They helped me to learn about countries, history and geography. The same became true of tea-label collecting. The second important event that changed my collecting was coming in contact with Marjoke. One day I was on the Internet and came upon a tea company that had a chat room. I wrote that I collected Teabag tags, did anyone else? Marjoke responded and said she did not collect labels but collected teabag envelopes. I had never heard of that. She then sent me labels and I sent her envelopes. I told my friends who travelled that I now needed the envelopes too. The same happened with some of her friends she put me in touch with. A lady in Poland also contacted me and said that she and her son collected teabag labels. Another trading situation arose. All this caused more changes in my collecting. I now eliminated my rule of having to drink the tea myself. I also started a second book for my slide pages. One for the labels that I had collected and the other for what other people had sent me. It also changed my New Years Eve ritual. All I had to do was count them by pages since I had eliminated duplicates when I put them into the pages. And then, something else happened that added another dimension to my collecting. As I was looking at the pages over and over again, I saw certain common themes repeating themselves on the labels. After about a month of looking at the pages, I made a list of the themes. They included Animals, Asia, Children, Coats of Arms, Different Teas, Great Britain, Heads, Hotels, Initials, Lipton, Modern Design, Names, Numbers, Pots, Shapes, Ships, Tea Leaves, The Other Side and then Red, Yellow, Blue and Green. Suddenly I had something new to think about. What could I do with this became the new challenge? What I decided on took months to execute. I created folders on the computer for each of the themes. Then I scanned each label and put them in the proper folder. It then became time to make a pleasing arrangement of good design of the labels on a page. This became one of the most creative and enjoyable experiences I have ever had. It was making "something out of nothing" that I had done in photography for years for my clients. The next step was what should be done with them? My wife who is an interior designer said they had to go on the wall of our living room. The pages needed very narrow frames and since we couldn't find the right ones, I made them out of mahogany. It is quite a wall, all from teabag labels. I also put the pages into a hook and give them to friends. Some have now agreed that I am not so crazy after all. There are always others who will never change their mind. the frames with the tags on the wall in the living room 6 Sta sh Tea C o m p a n y The Stash Tea Company is a privately-held company headquartered in Tigard, Oregon, a suburb of Portland. Founded in 1972, Stash Tea originally operated out of an old Portland Victorian style house, supplying loose herbal teas and bulk herbs to natural food stores. Starting in 1975, the company broadened its focus to include bagged teas and then began to sell a full line of traditional, specialty blend and herbal teas directly to fine restaurants and through a mail order catalogue to consumers. Today, Stash Tea is enjoying steady growth and has become one of the largest specialty tea companies in the United States. Stash Tea is also available in Canada and in several foreign countries. The company derives its name from an entertaining aspect of tea folklore. In earlier centuries, tea was a valuable commodity traditionally transported by clipper ship. The ship's captain often was presented with some of the finest teas for his personal use. This supply was his "stash," stowed carefully as his "private reserve." Today, the term still is used to denote anything put away carefully because of its preciousness. The Stash Tea Company offers a complete line of specialty teas: traditional black teas, flavoured and spiced teas, herbal teas, green teas, white teas, organic teas, rare and exotic teas and specialty iced teas. A message printed on the back of every Stash Tea envelope invites consumers to send for a free catalogue. As a result, Stash Tea has created an enviable database of loyal customers from this "no cost advertising" over the years. Stash is also known for its pioneering work in helping to establish tea as a beverage of choice in restaurants, and helped pioneer the growing and cultivation of Oregon peppermint for tea, working with mint farmers back in the early 1970s. Stash was also one of the early web pioneers with a web presence beginning in 1995. Stash Tea's emphasis on quality products and innovative marketing strategy has garnered widespread recognition for the company. Stash Kashmiri Chai was selected as a finalist for the 2000 NASFT (National Association For The Specialty Food Trade) Product Awards Competition in the Outstanding Beverage category. The competition is an annual event and is considered one of the most prestigious product competitions in the specialty foods industry. Stash received the Award of Excellence from the Fine Beverage & Food Federation for its Earl Grey and Premium Estate Iced Teas. Stash has also garnered numerous Beverage Packaging Global Design Awards including a Silver Award for its Christmas Teas packaging in 2003; another Silver Award for the redesign of the Stash Premium Tea line in 2002, and for Stash Premium Loose Teas in 2001; Best of Show Award for the Stash Teas of India line in 2000; and a Silver Award for the Yamamotoyama line of authentic teas of China and Japan in 1998. The flowers are white and small and bloom in the South American spring, from September to December. Only the young leaves and the terminal buds are used for mate. The tree grows in fertile soil and needs a humid and hot climate. The seeds of the yerba tree have a very tough coating. They can only germinate when they have been eaten by birds. The acid digestive juices of the birds remove the coating. How to make yerba. First the leaves are dried by means of a fire around the leaves. They are fermenting, but do not loose their green colour. Afterwards the leaves are dried by air. The yerba is grounded and packed in bags to rest for 9 months. Then the leaves are crushed and blended with other yerba’s. There is a big (caá guazú) and a small yerba mix ( caá mini). The small one does not contain branches. The origin. The Indians were the first who drank mate. They drank directly from an earthen ware pot, without using a bombilla. The Spaniards adopted mate almost immediately and called it “Herb from Paraguay”. They did not know that the plant was a tree. The drink has a beneficial effect to the intestines, and also sharpens the memory. In the middle of the 18’century every repectable family in Buenos Aires had a special servant to make the mate. From the Indians to the European immigrants all adopted the beverage. It is now considered the national drink for young and old. The word “mate”. The toucan favours the seeds of the yerba mate tree. The Guarani Indians, who lived in Argentina and the south of Paraguay, taught the Spaniards to drink mate. They called it caáigua. The Indians in the north of Argentina called the beverage “mati”. The Spaniards adopted this word for the tea as well as for the cup. 8 Mate can also be drunk in a cup with hot water and is then called Mate Cocido. How to drink mate? The most common mate also called matero is a gourd, which is dried and hollowed out. The mate was identified by carving a name or a sign in it. When the mate became more luxury the silversmith started decorating the cup. Sometimes the whole vessel was made of silver, but almost always in the form of a gourd. They can also be made from the horn of a buffalo. While visiting Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay we saw many mate drinkers. In Argentina and Uruguay the mate is drunk with hot water. It is very common to see people walking the streets with a mate and a vacuum flask. Also on a long journey no one has to be deprived of his or hers favourite beverage. At filling stations you can get not only gasoline, but there are also large containers with hot water to fill the vacuum flasks. In Paraguay a kind of infusion is drunk cold also. On every corner of the streets there are women selling herbs to every ones liking. They cut the leaves and ground them. It is possible to make a selection of the herbs. We recognized one as ginger root. The grounded herbs are put in cold water. In that case the beverage is called “tereré”. Some materos and bombillas. Left an antique mate. The bombilla, a straw with at the end a kind of strainer, is used to drink the mate. So the leaves stay behind. The taste is bitter and resembles Chinese tea.
