Congratulations to Hannah Finley who was crowned Miss
Marigold 2012 at the August 11th Subway Miss Marigold
Pageant.

Ribbon Cuttings
Soderstrom Skin Institute Opens
Soderstrom Skin Institute held a grand opening
at their new Morton facility, and the Pekin Area
Chamber of Commerce was there to help them
celebrate. Dr. Carl W. Soderstrom was joined by
the medical staff and associates for the ribbon
cutting. The new facility is located at 410 Maxine
Drive, which is just off Detroit Avenue, just south
of Route 98. With more than 125 years of
combined experience, the board certified
dermatologists, plastic surgeon, Mohs
micrographic surgeon, and certified physician assistants are qualified to diagnose

Leman Property Management Moves to New Location
Leman Property Management recently moved
their offices to 2807 Broadway, Suite B, in
Pekin. On August 16th they held an open
house for their employees, family, and friends.
The Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce was
there to congratulate them with a ribbon cutting
ceremony. Dave Leman and Drew Leman,
along with their key employees, assisted Bill
Leman with the ribbon cutting. Leman Property

Faith Baptist Christian School’s New Year
Faith Baptist Christian School, located at 1501
Howard Court in Pekin, held an open house on
Friday, August 17th. The Pekin Area Chamber of
Commerce was there for a ribbon cutting
ceremony to officially open Faith Baptist for the
new school year. Mr. Ken Seest, Principal, was
assisted by Pastor Tim Collard, the
Superintendent, and teachers, staff, students and
their families. Faith Baptist Christian School, a
ministry of Faith Baptist Church, has been
committed to providing a quality Christ-centered education for over 35 years. The
school equips students with an excellent academic foundation, strong social
skills, and with the spiritual and moral skills necessary to "grow in wisdom and
stature, and in favor with God and Man." (Luke 2:52).

Local Economy Mixed
Pekin’s sales tax disbursement received from the state in August was
13.4% greater than August of 2011.
Pekin’s sales tax disbursements received from the state for the last 3
months were 8.6% greater than the same three months in 2011.
The other three large communities on the east side of the Illinois River
also showed increases in August compared to August of 2011:
Morton (+18.1%), Washington (+6.8%), and East Peoria (+5.1%).
For the 12-month period ending in August, all four communities
showed an increase in sales tax receipts from the state, compared to
the 12-months ending in August of 2011: East Peoria (+11.4%),
Pekin (+5.0%), Morton (+4.9%), and Washington (+4.1%).
The number of residential units sold in the 61554 zip code for the first
seven months of 2012 was 6.8% less than the same period in 2011.
The other large Tazewell communities are showing large increases in
residential unit sales for the first seven months of 2012, compared to
the first seven months of 2011: Washington (+40.0%), Morton
(+34.7%), and East Peoria (+32.3%).
The average sales price of residential units in the 61554 zip code for
the first seven months of 2012 is $111,715. That is 9.2% greater than
the average sales price for the first seven months of 2011.
The average sales price of residential units in the other large Tazewell
communities is also up compared to the first seven months of 2011:
East Peoria (+15.3%), Morton (+3.5%), and Washington (+2.6%)
Nationally, non-farm payroll employment rose by 163,000 in July, while
the unemployment rate was unchanged at 8.3%
Pekin’s unemployment rate rose from 9.2% to 9.6% during July. The
rates in Tazewell Co and the Peoria region also increased slightly.
The number of people working in Pekin decreased by 60 during the
month, reversing a 5-month growth trend.

Business After Hours Held
The August Business After Hours was
hosted by Pekin Insurance. A great
turnout of chamber members enjoyed
their hospitality and door prizes. Gordon

Pekin Leaders Attend DC Briefings
Bill Fleming, Executive Director of the
Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce,
attended a Washington, DC "fly-in" with
other business and community leaders
from Central Illinois. In addition to some
"sight-seeing" there were several briefings
by legislators and private meetings with
legislators and bureaucrats. Other
chamber members in attendance included
Leigh Ann Matthews, the City of Pekin's Economic Development
Coordinator; Courtney Antonini, the Courthouse Administrator from Tazewell
County; Nancy Proehl, Tazewell County Board Member; Rich Kriegsman,
KMI Warehouses; and Mike Unes, the State Representative from the 91st

August Puttin’ On Pekin Recap
About 70 chamber members were up early
to enjoy a beautiful August morning and
the Puttin' On Pekin breakfast. Emcee Rob
Hancock presented Sue from Jake's Place
with the early prize, while Stephanie
Stoneking won the late prize. Committee
Member Otera Brinson presented the
Spotlight on Business Award to Alissa
Williams from the Pekin Public Library.
The Blue Ribbon Award was presented by
Rose Hasler to Liz Curtain from Classical Dance Academy and developer
Todd Thompson. Laura Gossmeyer presented the Sunshine Award to Sharon
Brandon of the Miller Senior Center. Gary Gillis and Doug Godke were the
featured speakers, and talked about 40 years of Marigold Festivals.
