children who were enrolled in classes last
year. If you have a child who has not yet
attended classes, our Religious Education
Director, Debbie Cramsie, will be in the
Family Center today, (August 28), & September 4, 11,
and 18 after the 9:00 a.m., and 10:30 a.m. Masses to
answer any and all questions and enroll your child.
Your child must be registered for classes no later
than Sunday, September 18 to attend the first week
of classes. Please bring a copy of his/her baptismal
certificate, if not baptized here.

Small Steps to Stewardship:
Giving with “No Strings Attached”

Today’s readings challenge us to examine our lives as the disciples we strive to be. In the Gospel
from Luke 14, we hear Jesus share in a parable, “For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” He is inviting us to do things for others in need, to live the message of today’s psalm “God, in Your Goodness, You have made a
home for the poor.” Our giving through stewardship, through our works of mercy, should not be
done with a “what’s in in for me” attitude; even if our goal is eternal life with the Lord. We give because Jesus asks us to and that should be enough. Jesus ends His parable with a request that we
help those in need with “no strings attached” but with a hope of an eternal reward. “Rather, when
you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you
be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the
righteous.” (Luke 14: 13-14)
The following blog, from catholicsteward.com is a
reflection on the first reading from Sirach and is a
great reminder about humility in our giving.
The First Reading in today’s Holy Scripture is
from the Old Testament Book of Sirach. At
times this Bible book has also been called the
Wisdom of Sirach. Similar to Proverbs, Sirach
is a series of teachings recorded between 200
and 175 BC.
The first verse of this reading captures one of
the key elements of stewardship. It says, “My
child, conduct your affairs with humility, and
you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.”
The word “humility” literally means “of the
earth” or in a phrase which might mean more
to us “down to earth.” The good steward realizes that he or she receives everything from a
loving and generous God. That can be a humbling recognition.
“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less,” is how the
eminent author and theologian C.S. Lewis put it. We are important in the eyes of God.
Jesus emptied Himself on our behalf. He was humility incarnate. Washing the feet of
His Apostles, He comes to us at every Mass in common bread and wine.
If we practice and pursue stewardship as a way of life, we choose to let others be
more important; we are not controlling; we support others in silent ways. Are you willing to let God take charge of your life? Being a steward means that. That is the message from Sirach, and it is a message given us by Jesus over and over.

community that worships together, seeks to serve others
and joins in fellowship.

The Southern Deanery Catholic
Grandparents
Associatio n
(CGA) will meet here at Ascension Saturday, September 3 at
10:00 a.m. in the Family Center. All grandparents are invited
to attend the meeting whether your grandchildren live
near or far.
The CGA is a private association of the faithful to provide support to grandparents and help as they pass on
the faith to their families. The meeting is filled with
fellowship, prayer and discussion of passing on the faith.
