The inaugural game of the 2006 Central States Football League kicks off
today as Northwestern (1-2) and Southern Nazarene (1-1) meet for the third
time in history. Both teams tied for second place in the 2006 CSFL Preseason Poll.
Northwestern fell to New Mexico Highlands last Saturday, 34-10, in a second consecutive matchup between a NCAA Division II team. The Rangers
couldn’t harness the Cowboys passing assault, allowing 361 passing yards
and four touchdowns via passes. Northwestern was contained to only 30
rushing yards, but found a way to pass for 183 yards.
Zach Edwards scored the Rangers’ only touchdown of the game and third
straight touchdown for NWOSU. Edwards led the offense with nine catches
for 119 yards.
Linebacker B.J. Hodshire led the Rangers in tackles for the second game
of the season. He had 10 tackles, nine unassisted and an interception.
Scouting the Crimson Storm
After being shutout in their first game of the year against Howard Payne,
the Crimson Storm came back in week two and snuck by Belhaven, 21-14.
SNU relies heavily on the pass, throwing for 371 yards and rushing for
only 130. Sophomore Quarterback Tyler Schneider has completed 44 percent
of his passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns. All three of SNU’s touchdowns have been in the air, including one touchdown to leading receiver Brett
Armstrong and the other two scores going to tight end Jeremy Rogers.
The Crimson Storm defense has allowed 251 yards per game and has
picked off two passes in each of their games.
Last Meeting
2005 - With the game tied at 21 at the half, the Rangers scored a touchdown in each the third and fouth quarter and held SNU to a field goal, while
clinching the 35-24 win. Quarterback DeMarko Jones led the offense, completing 18-of-22 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Odie Armstrong
scored twice on 26 carries for 137 yards.
Northwestern totaled 404 yards of offense, just two yards behind SNU’s
406 yards. Both teams rushed for 144 yards.
Series Record
The Rangers are undefeated in the two-game series against the Crimson
Storm. Northwestern defeated Southern Nazarene 10-3 in the 2004 initial
meeting in Bethany. On the road again in 2005, the Rangers recorded their
second consecutive win over SNU with a 35-24 win.
Rankings and Predictions
Both teams received votes this week in the NAIA poll. The Rangers
received one more vote than the Crimson Storm. According to the NAIA poll,
Northwestern is tied for 35th while Southern Nazarene is tied for 38th.
SNU is favored 10-7 over the Rangers by Victory Sports Network and
Football Gazette has NWOSU favored 21-14.
