Accucraft
Accucraft started the new model year
with the publication of a comprehensive
new catalog covering more than 90
pages. Some of the new models that are
being announced are the following:
A Climax „Mich. Cal #4“, in track
powered and Live-Steam versions, scale
1:20.3. This model was originally developed by HDC – Hans Dieter Clemens.
Accucraft started with this as the base
model, made some modifications, added
additional details and will produce the
Climax as a regular production run. This
reduced the development time for the
model substantially and will be reflected
in an attractive price.
Another model for the American narrow gauge enthusiast is the K-36 of the
D&RGW, also in scale 1:20.3 for 45mm
gauge track. This model will be handconstructed using brass and stainless
steel. The minimum radius is specified
at 120 cm. This model will be even better than the K-28 – according to insider
information.
In addition to those models, a Southern
Pacific 4-6-0 (electric and Live-Steam) is
also being planned as well as a USRA
0-6-0 switcher in 1:29 (45mm) LiveSteam.
2
For 2008, Accucraft announced their
own brass „Europa-Gleis“ (European
Track). Available as Flex track in lengths
of approximately 180 cm (6‘) and 90 cm
(3‘). Samples were shown at the fair; the
exact specifications and delivery information will be available in spring.

Aristo-Craft
The typical focus of American model
train manufacturers is now also becoming the trend in Europe. The product
offering of Diesel engines surpasses the
product line up of steam engines.
Aristo-Craft, as a new item this year,
brought a model of the GP40 in 1:29
scale to Nürnberg. This engine, a bit
longer than 600 mm, is powered by two
2-axle drive trains, each one containing a large Mabuchi motor. Directional
lighting is of course included as well as
a powerful smoke generator and additional detail parts like grab irons made
of metal. This heavy engine provides
exceptional pulling power. In addition to
the Union Pacific livery, this model will
also be available in the livery of ten additional railroad companies.
LxWxH: 660 x 112 x 168 mm.
To handle the freight traffic, 40-foot
boxcars with double doors will be introduced. These required the development
of completely new molds. The cars are
well detailed with ladders, roof details,
brakes and numerous moving parts. The
doors can be opened completely.
For use with the Class 66 engine, AristoCraft is offering container cars with
40-foot containers.

Bachmann
It is always enjoyable to “inspect” the
Bachmann display case at the fair, especially for US fans.
The previously announced K-27 in scale
1:20.3 was finally on display. This large
narrow-gauge engine will be available in
four different versions: Rio Grande, Rio
Grande Southern, Denver & Rio Grande
Western (green-black) and unlettered
(green-black) so it can be finished with
the livery of your own railroad company.
Shipments will start in the near future.
Rolling stock in 1 : 20.3 scale can be expanded using two different types of tankers (with or without frame) or a gondola
4
with side doors for bulk cargo. All cars
are available in a number of different
colors, with or without advertising on the
cars. I specifically liked the low-side gondola because of the excellent detailing.
Sales through authorized dealer network.

Bretzler
Bretzler introduced motorized drives in gauge IIm (45 mm) for
the Ocre wood kit streetcars, the “Cibeles”, “Tibidabo” and
“Soller”. The fully enclosed motor blocks are simply fastened
to the bottom plate to replace the factory installed axles. Finished models can be upgraded without problems in just a few
minutes. The electrical pick up is via all four wheels as well as
two skates per motor block. Pick ups are connected to the motor
using connectors.
These motor blocks can of course also be used to power your
own models.
Each drive, including hardware to fasten it, retails for 49.00
EUR.
Kit of a small crane suitable for gauge IIm.
The prototype could have been located near a freight shed, a
freight platform or on a quay. Mounted on a (field-) railroad
car, this would be very attractive. The kit consists of 40 detail
babbitt metal parts and can be constructed so that it is operational (manually).
The base plate is about 42 mm, the full length (depending on
the angle of the crane arm) is about 260 mm. Weight of the kit
is roughly 360 grams; price 49.00 EUR.

Easygleis
Just in time for the new Garden railroad
season, Easygleis is introducing a new
track mounting and bridge support system.
By eliminating curves and circular segments, these new elements follow the
prototype steel construction. The straight
segments make it easier for the model
builder and also more flexible.
Single track or multi-track curves are
constructed by assembling segments with
angled ends. The template to cut the
ends correctly as well as detailed instructions are provided as part of the product.
This new mounting system is also suitable
as a station platform or a flag stop. The
track support can be ballasted.
Matching the modular dimensions of
the track supports, Easygleis developed
new, delicate lattice towers, which are
also suitable for other bridge constructions and are capable of handling heavy
trains. The products are made of PVC
plastics that have proven their suitability
for outdoor use for decades (also used to
construct windows). Parts require painting by the modeler using the appropriate
outdoor paints that are UV-resistant.
The bridge components are suitable for
new construction, but they can also be
fitted well to existing layouts.

Modellbau Heyn
Bertram Heyn has developed the following new items:
Block tower Hottendorf in 1 : 22.5 and 1
: 32 scale to match the prototype located
between Stendal and Gardelegen.
The dimensions of the bricks at 11.1 x
5.55 x 3.7 mm reflect the correct size of
standard construction bricks. The roofing
tiles are also correct scale replicas.
The stairs are a free-lance design with an
attractive railing. The weather side of the
building is finished using wooden boards
just like the prototype.
LxWxH: 25 x 25 (Base plate) x 36 cm.
In scale 1 : 32 11 x 16 (Base plate) x
25 cm.
This kit is arranged so that the upper and
lower story can be set up individually,
one can therefore, for example, create
a small gatekeeper’s house and a boiler
house. The stairs can be used as an observation deck. In addition, the kit also
includes a small comfort station (toilette).
One therefore gets four kits in one compact package.
Wooden lorry kits in scale 1 : 13.3 were
shown as hand-built models. The following versions are being planned: Flat lorry
with an optional center pivot plate, bulkhead lorry, box-type lorry and a lorry
with the traditional angled sides. The kits
will contain all necessary parts starting
with the axle bearings, continuing with
the parts for the frame and including the
metal fittings and supports for the superstructure. If demand warrants it, different
lengths frames, lorries with brakes and
shorty box-lorries will be developed as
part of this product line.
A new water standpipe is under development und in conjunction with the firm
bloxxs, real wooden windows have been
added to the product line of milled items.

New Item presentation
LGB
LGB New Items
Considering the chaotic situation during
the previous two years, one could hardly
expect a range of fantastic new products
for the beginning of the 2008 season.
Most LGB fans are at least happy that the
LGB product line will continue to exist.
We found out that the production of track
has already started at the Hungarian
factory. The production of cars and locomotives will follow sequentially. It’s a pity
that the production has been moved from
the hometown of LGB to a foreign country, but at least it’s still in Europe. Less
palatable however are the huge price
increases of some of the items. It seems
to be a fact that the prices for some of
the raw materials have literally exploded
in the last few months –especially nonferrous metal – and that plastic raw
material has not become less expensive
either, but nobody really expected these
substantial increases. The majority of the
LGB customers are probably retirees. For
the last few years, this group of consumers have had to cope with price increases of the daily necessities combined with
reduced buying power of their income.
It will thus be difficult to explain to the
better half that one needs to spend even
more money now on their beloved hobby. But from that point of view, the lower
cost standard gauge locos, which have
been introduced recently, are at least an
option considering their price. Market
forces will be the great equalizer.
Even though LGB production was moved
to Hungary, the well known excellent
LGB service will remain in Nürnberg. The
other good news is that the well-regarded suppliers of the past, like for example
Bühler and Massoth, have agreed to support the LGB product line in the future.
The future direction of the LGB product
line for US-fans had not been decided by
press time.
However, due to the large demand it
is expected that the Factory Train Set
will be made available this year. I also
expect a new production run this year of
the often-requested V200 diesel.
Shown here are just a few photos of the
large expected product line-up for 2008.
More details are included in the 32-page

Märklin
Noticable in the 2008 new item list from
Märklin are models that Hübner had
previously announced but never actually introduced. Those included a rail
bus with trailing car (VT + VS98) and a
steam engine BR24.
As an Insider-Modell, Märklin will offer
the electric locomotive BR 103.1. And
the fans will also appreciate the BR 94
steam locomotive.
During the new item presentation this
year, three new structures generated a lot
of interest – they will be offered as kits.
These are an engine shed for two locos
(62 x 48 cm), a gantry-style signal tower
(41 x 24 cm) and a coaling station (40
x 18 cm). The base plate dimensions are
shown in parentheses.

Piko
As expected, PIKO introduced additional versions of the Taurus
and the BR218 diesel engine at the Nürnberg Fair. Also on display was an early hand-built sample of the railbus VT98/VS98,
the prototype of which was known years ago as the “Saviour
of the branch lines”. This new product will be available in third
quarter 2008 at a price of 300.- Euro.
Matching this, the very first sample of a canvas-covered freight
car was shown, the DB Shimmns-tu. An open, 4-axle gondola
type Eaos 106 was also announced.
The PIKO catalog for 2008 has grown to over 140 pages. A

Prehm
DoFlex, the roadbed for your garden
railroad. One set of resin and hardener
is available for 39.- Euros. To complete
the appearance, we recommend ballast 1-3mm, granite grey, granite red or
anthracite basalt, 20 kg for 19.95 Euro.
The track will then be properly ballasted,
weatherproof and permanent.
Amish horse and buggy
The Amish people place a lot of value
on family life, the community and being
separated from the rest of the world.
Their ancestors were mostly from southwestern Germany or Swiss-German and
their language is an old dialect. It is well
known that they typically reject technical
advances in most cases and accept new
concepts only after careful consideration.
Driving a car is forbidden, they still use
the horse and buggy.
The metal figures are weatherproof and
available at the low price of only 11.95
Euro each. As a further benefit, a car
with a few of these figures will stay solidly on your track.
Amish horse and buggy with two Amish
figures and a horse made of plastic.
Scale app. 1:24, 39.95 Euro,
Available starting roughly in April.

an exclusive unit for your diorama or

Preiser
The new items from Preiser in gauge I
and II are limited this year to only four
items.
The three railroad personell (gauge I) are
shown in different poses, for example
the dispatcher who loves to look out the
window. A figure ideally suited for use
anywhere in the station area.
The couple with child (IIm) (without photograph) also fits well when positioned
on a station platform.
The Chinese train personell however raises a few questions and leads us to speculate. The non-stop container connection
Peking Hamburg is of course reality,
but it is highly questionable if Chinese
personell accompany it. Perhaps Preiser
has obtained some advance knowledge
and Mr. Mehdorn is busy negotiating a
joint Chinese/German venture to operate
certain Deutsche Bundesbahn rail lines.
In any case, interesting figures for which,
I’m sure, many garden railroad fans will
find some plausible use.

Railking - MTH
The Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 would definitely be in the
“Hall of Fame” if there was such a thing for locomotives – at
least that is what’s claimed in the MTH catalog. However, for
us European garden railroad fans, this engine is rather strange
looking. Even though the engine exceeds 70 cm in length, the
manufacturer still claims R2 as the minimum radius it can negotiate.
And while we’re talking about size, or more specifically length,
the “2-8-8-8-2 Triplex” is over 100 cm long! A super-sized
steam engine for the US fan. Includes many details and is well
equipped with a strong smoke generator, sound, illuminated
cab as well as an engineer and stoker figures.

Schiede
Dieter Schiede (Zeilarn) developed the V29, the way it was
in service at the Pfalzbahn (Meckenheim-Ludwigshafen), the
Walhallabahn, the branch line Nagold-Altensteig and MEG/
SWEG. The prototype dates back to the early fiftees to meet the
requirement of various railroads for a more powerful but still
manouverable engine.
A number of the V29 engines were taken out of service and
scrapped. One engine found its way via the DGEG narrow
gauge museum to the DEV in Bruchhausen where it was restored and is in service again today.
The models: They are available in 12 different scale model versions with somewhat different construction and in the livery of
the various railroads where they were in service (see above).
The model uses two LGB motor blocks, each one driving two
axles, has a fully finished cab, doors that open and additional
details such as grab irons, steps and buffers made of metal.
Triple headlights and two tail lights that automatically change
depending on direction of travel.
Technical data:
Gauge 45 mm
L (over buffers) x W x H: 410/415 x 120 x 147 mm, weight
