Mens Open Singles
W
ith more than 210 players signed up to play from
June 1-3 at Bayou Bluff Tennis Club, the Butch
Oustalet Autoplex NTRP has turned out to be the “biggest
south of Jackson, Mississippi, since Hurricane Katrina”
boasts Toby Fasth, who successfully directed and scheduled
close to 200 matches from Friday afternoon to Sunday
afternoon. It goes without saying that the success of
running a large tournament with very tight schedule hinges
on perfect weather. And on that we were blessed. Although
a bit hot and muggy, at least
not a drop of rain came to
dampen the tournament.
Many players who play in
this tournament are preparing
for the State NTRP team
playoffs.
Efficiently run by the staff,
led by Tennis Committee
chair Jenny Farragut, the
Tournament Desk was a
busy central point of operations in the smooth flow of
the matches. Thanks to the manpower of the tournament
desk: Ted and June Hearn, Butch Plitt, Joe Howes, Susan
McCormick, Ann Lanier, Nancy Storey, You all would have
made Harvey Ford proud! Tom Holder did a fantastic job
as Tournament Referee in making sure that players abide by
the code and that minor on-court problems were resolved
under the guidelines of the USTA rules. The stringing
corner (Macky’s racket) was busy as special discounts were
offered during the weekend.
Thanks to Butch Oustalet for his dealership’s main
sponsorship of this tournament, and the very thorough
work that Andi Rushton did behind the scenes to ensure a
bounty full of players’ amenities, food, drinks and topped
by a first-class players’ party on Saturday night. The firstclass reputation of Bayou Bluff tournaments, which began
as the Bobby Anderson Memorial and then picked up by
Beau Rivage’s and Coastal Rehab’s sponsorships, continues
to go up a few notches. Hope that Butch Oustalet will
continue to support tennis in Mississippi through Bayou
Bluff, REGARDLESS!
Gypsy Allenbaugh brought the donuts from Krispy
Kreme and unlimited supply of bananas and water for the
players. Lisa Metz and the staff at Courtside Café kept the
breakfast and snack table flowing with food as well. The
food at the players’ party was the talk of the players!
Making the exciting weekend of tennis more enjoyable
is the triumphant performance by our club members. Led
by our own pro, Bo Gard defeated the number 1 seeded

with many activities

ummer is here! Bayou Bluff is ready!
There are many activities planned that
you don’t want to miss.
This is your Club; I encourage you to
take advantage of the beautiful setting and
blissful atmosphere to enjoy the tennis
activities, the casual dining, and the newly
refurbished pool.
The pool officially opened on Memorial
Day. Melinda Sullivan, as the Lifeguard
Coordinator, is a great addition to the
safety of the pool. Welcome, Melinda, and
all the lifeguards.
You shouldn’t notice the new
computerized filtration system, but you
will certainly notice the sparkling clear
water to swim in. Summer Camp and
Swim Team have started. Welcome back
Coach Sean Douglas and Asst. Coach John
Payton Hood. Go, Bull Frogs!
The Butch Oustalet Autoplex NTRP
Tournament was held June 1-3. There were
212 entries! Congratulations to all those
who played. You’re all winners!
What a great way to end the spring
season, gear up for summer mixed doubles,
or warm-up for the state tournament; or,
simply watch some awesome tennis! Did

during the day and enjoy dinner and a
Broadway play in the evening? Bring the
kids! Or not! Either way, it will be a great
trip!
Look for details on the summer tennis
program. There will be weekly tennis camps
for tennis enthusiasts from ages 7 and up.
Junior Team Tennis is back after several years.
Teams will compete against other teams from
other clubs on the coast.
Macky will be offering beginners’ classes
in the mornings. So, while the children are at
the summer camp, you can be learning the
sport of a lifetime!
There are new arrivals for the latest in
tennis fashion. All members receive a 15%
discount on purchases over $20 on apparel
and shoes; and 25% discount on tennis

New GM promises
more fun to come
A
s most of you know I have been an
employee at Bayou Bluff for six years. I
have been given the opportunity to serve as
General Manager of the Club.
With much enthusiasm I have accepted
the permanent position. I have a lot of
exciting and great ideas to come. Presently,
we are working to bring back babysitting
services, along with more social functions
such as wine pairings, themed dinners,
lobster fest, seafood extravaganza, junior
tennis mixers, fashion shows, rock-and-roll
tennis, wine-and-cheese socials and more
adult tennis mixers.
I would like to encourage you all to be
more involved in your club, whether it is
tennis, social, serving on committees, or just
relaxing on the deck with a drink and dinner.
Summer is in full swing. The tennis and
summer camps are going well, thanks to our
directors and employees.
Please know that my door is always open
to hear any suggestions you may have.
Thanks to all the members who supported
our Memorial Day Bash! It was well attended
with approximately 300 people.

Two teams compete in Senior Playoffs
T
wo club teams competed at the
District Playoffs, held in Laurel the
first weekend in June.
The first was Nancy Pittman’s 3.5 team,
which finished second in their flight of
5 teams with a 3-1 record. By the way,
the team that beat Nancy’s team (2-1
with the lost court splitting sets) and
won their flight and went on to win the
championship match against the winner
of the other flight. Team members are
Sherry Anderson, Patty Edwards, Peggy
Harrington, June Hearn, Patti Hood, Judy
Hyde, Candy Lambert, Ann Lanier, Susan
McCormick, Jeannie Neely, Chris Reeves
and Nancy Storey.
The other team was Margaret McCrary’s
4.0 team. They finished in a three-way
tie for second place with a 2-2 record in
the field of 5 teams total. Team members
are Ann Collum, Jenny Farragut,
Ann Heitzmann, Phyllis Little, Vicki
McCollister, Reba Reed, Dot Regel and
Bobbi Robicheaux.
Congratulations to both teams for
making such a good showing! We hope to
have some male representation at Sr. State
next year ...
Six BBTC teams State Playoff bound
Two women’s and four men’s teams are
headed to the State Playoffs in Jackson the
second weekend in June to compete for
the State Champion title in their divisions.
Three ended their season in first place. The
other three were second-place teams, two
of which drew wildcards for the honor of
competing at State.
Nancy Storey’s 3.5 team finished in first
place with an impressive 11-1 record for
the season in a field of 13 teams. Team
members included Laura Burns, Suzette
Carlson, Leslie Collins, Lynette Cooper,
Leslie Dane, Marymargaret Kuhlmann,
Rebecca Mayfield, April Mechatto, Nikki
Plitt, Denise Parker, Maryann Silva and
Chonne Tyndall.
The women’s 4.0 team captained
by Julie West and Beth Matthews also
finished first in their division of six teams
with a 9-1 record. Team members are Cory
Brainard, Jenny Farragut, Karen Fasth,
Ann Heitzmann, Diane Holloway, Stacey
Kuhlmann, Margaret McCrary, Stephanie
McKay, Jill Mora, Phyllis Shoemake and
Callen Weatherly.
David Lion’s Coastwide 4.5 team

finished first of the two 4.5 teams on the
Coast with a record of 4-3. Bayou Bluff
members of the team are Vernon Beamon,
Charlie Beasley, Michael Guel, Regan Hall,
Bill Pittman, Josh Rimes, brothers Chad
and Shay Sullivan, and Kevin Verrett. Nonmembers include Bubba Avdoyan, Matt
D’Angelo and Al Jordan.
Steve Fitzgerald’s 3.5 team finished in
second place with an impressive 9-1 record
in their division of 11 teams. (That kind
of record will usually be good enough to
put a team in first place!) Team members
are James Estrada, Eric Kravette, Brent
Fitzgerald, William Mitchell, Walt Pannell,
Matt Powers, Archie Reeves, Mike Riemann,
Walter Risley, Richard Rogers and Richard
Smith.
Alicia Vanzile’s 3.0 team also finished in
second place with a very good record of 6-1
in their flight of eight teams. Kim Gioe’s
team finished in second place in their flight
of nine teams on the other side of the draw,
also with an excellent 7-1 record. These two
teams were to play for the wildcard slot entry
to the playoffs. But Kim’s team was unable
to field a team large enough to compete in
Jackson and granted the wildcard to Alicia’s
team. Members of the team are Elizabeth
Bailey, Allison Beasley, Leslie Blacklidge,
Renee Dellinger, Missy Fritz, Lee Ann
Hunter, Terri Kuns, Erin Rollins, Lucie
Seghers, Stephanie Seymour, Betsy Taylor
and Robin Weaver.
Kendall Turnage’s 4.0 team finished in
second place of six teams with a 7-3 record.
They also drew a wildcard slot into the
playoffs. Team members include Bryan
Batson, John Benjamine, Joe Campbell,
Andy Gunkel, Dana Ladnier, Bryant
McCrary, Jay Medley, Richard Mueller, Mike
Riemann, John Rice, Chuck Rollins, Richard
Smith and Jeff Uchello.

Follow the guidelines from the code
Some questions came up in our recent
tournament. Here are some guidelines from
the code, the player’s guide:
• Make tennis a fun game by not 1.
conducting loud postmortems after points;
2. losing your temper, using foul language,
throwing your racket; 3. sulking while losing;
4. counting points played in good faith. If
players discover a mistake, played points
stand.
• If you are playing in a tournament and
you have problems with calls, footfaults, call
on an official, that’s what they are there for.
• When you are in a tournament you are
responsible for your playing times. Always
check the scoreboard before you leave. Ask
the tournament director if you are uncertain
of your playing times.

Cardio Tennis cuts morning classes
For June and July, Cardio Tennis Classes
will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings at 6:30. The classes are limited tim
and michele musial to six. Sign-up sheets
are posted at the club. If you are looking to
burn up to 400 calories, hit a lot of balls, do
lots of exciting drills to improve your game,
try cardio tennis! Cost per class: $12
Adult beginner class to be offered
An adult beginner class will be offered
Wednesdays in four-day sessions starting
this summer at 10 a.m. Fee: $60 with a
minimum of three students. Call Macky for
questions or sign up.

team practice, Tadpole and swim
lessons.

Our camps are scheduled to start the week of June 11. Jonathan
Barnes is our Camp Director this year. The children will be
swimming, doing arts and crafts, and playing tennis.
The first week of camp is at capacity. However, if you are still
interested in camps this summer, please contact the office.
USTA Junior team tennis coming in June
USTA Junior team tennis is coming to
the Coast in June. Two levels are offered,
intermediate and advanced, and the age
groups are U18, U14 and U12. Anyone
interested, contact Bo or sign up at the club.
There will be a state playoff in Jackson in
June for the winners.
The courts have been busy and the
summer months should not be any different.
We have 17 mixed teams competing in
USTA leagues and we also have club leagues,
so there will be a lot of tennis played.
Here are some court use reminders: Courts
can be reserved up to two days in advance.
Evening reservations are 5:30-7:30 and 7:309:30. Please call and cancel your court if you
are unable to play. Members must register
and pay for their guests.
Our next sanctioned tournament is the
McDonald’s MS Junior Hardcourts Open
Championships on July 7-10.
