Dear Federation Family:
I am privileged and proud to say that the Jewish Federation of South
Palm Beach County is about to embark on a new era of professional
leadership. Matthew C. Levin will become the Chief Executive Officer
on August 1. Please join me in welcoming him as we begin working
together to build a strong future for our Federation.
This great news comes as we culminate another exciting campaign
season. From the Pechter Family naming of our Safety Net Services
Giving Center, to Anne and Norman Jacobson’s naming of our
Foundation, to the announcement that Harvey and Phyllis Sandler
have named our Major Gifts Event, and much more, our Federation is
blessed with donors who continue to give their very best.
The word that defines this year for me is unity. Not only did everyone
pull together to make great things happen for beneficiaries locally and
around the world, but our Federation reached out to all segments of
our community like never before. We added many exciting creative
programs for the community-at-large, our Women’s Department and our
up-and-coming young leaders and we were able to attract many new
faces to our Federation.
Our Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) also made a
significant impact this year through its efforts to maintain funding
from Florida legislators for services provided to seniors and persons
with disabilities residing in our community, and to tighten economic
sanctions against those doing business with Iran. The JCRC also made
its mark with pro-Israel activities, including the annual Israel Under the
Stars celebration, which brought thousands of local residents of all
ages to celebrate Israel Independence Day.

Matthew C. Levin Named Chief Executive Officer for
Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County
The Jewish Federation of
South Palm Beach County has
announced its selection of
Matthew C. Levin to become
the organization’s new Chief
Executive Officer on August 1,
2012. On May 11, 2012, the
Federation’s Board of Directors
unanimously approved Levin for
the CEO position.
“I am more than thrilled that Matt will be taking the reins as
our new CEO,” said Ellen R. Sarnoff, Chair of the Federation’s
Board of Directors. “Matt’s wealth of experience and profound
lifelong commitment to the Jewish people will serve us well as we
continue our sacred work of helping so many in need locally, in
Israel and throughout the world. Eager to embark on this new era
of professional leadership, we look forward to building on our
Federation’s strengths and setting the course for a strong future.”
Levin brings 25 consecutive years of professional responsibility
with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC),
culminating in his current position as Southeastern States Director
and Florida Regional Director. For most of that time, he has been
primarily responsible for expanding AIPAC’s major gifts program
in the Southeast, including building its endowment for the
future. His proven expertise also includes strategic planning and
leadership development, programming and legislative affairs, as
well as public speaking and relationship building.
“We are extremely pleased with the results of our very
thoughtful, comprehensive search process,” said Raymond
Zimmerman, who chaired the Federation’s CEO Search
Committee. “We worked hard to ensure that our organization
would be in the best professional hands, and we are confident
that Matt’s skills, experience and passion will bring him great
success in this vital role for our Jewish community.”
A proud Florida native raised in Hollywood, Levin resides in
Broward County with his wife and their three young sons.

2012 Annual Meeting
A CELEBRATION
OF GIVING & the Gifted
Federation leaders and supporters who gathered in Zinman Hall on
April 18 for the 2012 Annual Meeting discovered that our Jewish
community is not only incredibly generous, but also considerably
talented. Amid the Federation business and celebration of the
fundraising year, 250 enthusiastic guests experienced an exclusive
one-night-only revue of great performances, right from the welcome
sung by Co-chairs Amy Ross and Robin Rubin – after which proud
mother Phyllis Sandler took the microphone to kvell.

an even deeper appreciation for the extraordinary
people who make up our Federation family.”

Ellen R. Sarnoff delivered a State of the Federation
presentation highlighting the year’s many
accomplishments, beginning with September’s
announcement of Jack and Marilyn Pechter’s
significant gift that created the Sarah and Max
Pechter Center for Local Safety Net Services.
Ellen also made the exciting new announcement that in recognition of the
staunch support received from Phyllis and Harvey Sandler, the Federation’s
single largest Annual Campaign donors, and the contributions of their
entire family, the Federation’s premier annual fundraising event has been
named “The Sandler Family Major Gifts Event.”
Ellen gave heartfelt thanks to Executive Committee and Board members,
generous donors and volunteers, and tenacious Campaign leaders
including 2012 Campaign Chair Joe Mishkin, Women’s Philanthropy
Chair Meryl Gallatin, and Women’s Philanthropy Campaign Chair
Emily Grabelsky. Ellen, herself, was lauded for her dedication and
wisdom on beginning her second year of leading the Federation as

Jim Nobil presented the James H. Nobil Community
Leadership Award to Ronald Krancer for exemplifying
a true humanitarian and philanthropist.

Achievement Award to Benyamin Tepper, Mail Room
Supervisor, for his utmost professionalism and
dedication for over 20 years.
Rabbi David Steinhardt, JCRC Chair, delivered a D’var Torah
referencing the observance of Yom HaShoah.
Nominating Committee Chair Michael Lipton presented the
2012-13 slate of diverse, impressive Board candidates,
which was unanimously approved.
Margie Baer presented the James and Marjorie Baer
Outstanding Young Leadership Award to Richard
Steinberg for his demonstration of extraordinary
service to the Federation.
Donna Klein Jewish Academy students led the anthems and
presented a colorful scene from Willy Wonka.
For a second year, the Annual Meeting featured the
unforgettable comedy of Steve Mendelsohn.
Brett Koolik played a variety of musical selections.
The Annual Meeting closed with our powerful Federation
theme song, “No One Stands Alone,” led by staff members
George Malin and Daniel Burch.
The JFNA National Endowment Achievement Award
was presented by David Pratt, Chair of the Anne and
Norman Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation, to
Mark Schaum for his instrumental role in the growth
of our community’s endowment funds. From L-R:

The Dorothy Seaman Leadership Award was presented
by Dotti to Kathy Green, recognizing a member of
the Women’s Philanthropy Board who embodies the

Thousands Cheer at
“Israel Under the Stars” at
Sunset Cove Amphitheater
On April 26, thousands of local residents of all ages and
backgrounds stood together once again on Yom HaAtzmaut. In
a joyous and inspirational demonstration of support, South Palm
Beach County celebrated the State of Israel’s 64th anniversary with
flags, falafel, music and much more at Sunset Cove Amphitheater in
South County Regional Park.
Our community took this opportunity to express its pride in the
extraordinary achievements of this small nation over such a short
period of time. Exhibits from eleven local congregational and
day schools clearly established the contributions made by Israel
throughout the world, through its humanitarian aid, technological
innovation, medical advances and much more.

Campaign
As FRD Chair, I worry about our current
needs, as well as the future of our Jewish
community. But today, I’d also like to speak
to you as a grandparent. Let’s envision a
future in which our grandchildren and greatgrandchildren are connected to their heritage,
participate in our beloved traditions and live
in a community in which all of our Jewish institutions and schools
are strong, vibrant and supported.
My question to you is how do we make this happen? What will you
bequeath to the next generation of Jews? How do we continue to
build a dynamic Jewish community in South Palm Beach County that
will be here for our great-grandchildren and beyond?
As your FRD Chair I’m committed to helping you answer these
questions and create a brighter Jewish future. As we close the
season, and as many of you start packing for the summer, I wish
you continued health and happiness.
We are so proud that our community has
maintained its commitment to the many
people who rely on our Federation. The
leadership at each of our country clubs
has been so attentive and involved,
helping us draw new members into our
Federation family. And the lay leaders
of every division have helped us reach out to community
members of all ages with relevant initiatives. I don’t think it’s
possible to have more dedicated people.
Together we care, we worry, and we concern ourselves with
our Jewish commitments to those we know, and to those we
don’t. I am proud to be a part of this generous community.

King David Society Converses with President Clinton
at Mar-a-Lago
Many local members of the Jewish Federations’
King David Society recently took advantage of an
exceptional opportunity to hear from former President
Bill Clinton. On March 26, they gathered at The Mara-Lago Club in Palm Beach to learn about President
Clinton’s unique perspective on the world today and
learn about his continuing life of public service.

America, the elegant event began with cocktails,
followed by a conversation with President Clinton and

Super Heroes Raise over $725,000
On March 11, hundreds of passionate Super Sunday volunteers
kept the phones absolutely animated - as Super Heroes reached
out into the community with opportunities to join the super strata
by helping to meet vital needs. Alive with all ages and all streams
of our vibrant Jewish community, the seamlessly successful day
of ruach, compassion and activities was co-chaired by Jodi &
Jeff Harris and Naomi & Rich Steinberg. And together the Super
Heroes raised more than $725,000!
Super Sunday donors saw some of their dollars double, thanks
to the super-generosity of the Anne & Norman Jacobson Jewish
Community Foundation, which committed to matching every new
gift or increase on March 11 up to $50,000.

Born in the Ukraine, he now devotes his time to swim
programs at JCC’s around the U.S.
The afternoon shift offered something for everyone. Next
door to Zinman Hall, 60 enthusiastic teens, and Alpha Epsilon
Pi Fraternity brothers from FAU, generated a palpable buzz.
With cell phones and laptops, they called, texted, tweeted,
worked on Facebook and more to raise over $89,000. Super
Sunday’s Teen Co-chairs were Gabby Deutch, Serena Deutch,
While their parents and older sibs were busy helping the
community, children enjoyed an action-packed Metro Family
FunDay. Volunteers also demonstrated their caring and generosity
in hands-on projects. They brought and packaged food for the
Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry and made Super Hero capes
for local children living with serious illness, through Emmy’s Heart.

Up Final Courses
South Palm Beach County residents hungry for Jewish knowledge
and inspiration got their fill with renowned presenters at the
Federation’s Community-wide Education Series. After a satisfying
first course with “America’s Rabbi” Shmuley Boteach, the series
dished up another two substantial offerings. On February 2 in
Zinman Hall, Dr. Rick Hodes, CNN Championing Children Hero
and JDC Medical Director in Ethiopia, described preparing
Ethiopians for Aliyah, and spoke of his profound life-saving
work throughout Africa, including his adoption of five Ethiopian
children in critical need of medical care. Bret Stephens of the
Wall Street Journal, and a former editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem
Post, addressed current issues facing Israel in the invigorating
final session at Woodfield Country Club on March 29.
The diverse, insightful series, which reached hundreds of
local residents, was chaired by Helen Cohan with Vice Chairs
Jonathan Louis and Jill Rose. Michael Weinberg of Gateway

Talk About Football: Men’s Sports Night Out with
Desmond Howard at FAU Stadium
Men who are passionate about sports and great companionship
as well as helping the community once again went all in for a
most enjoyable evening devoted to all three. They gathered for
the Federation’s annual Men’s Sports Night Out on February
9 at the Premier Club Lounge of FAU’s On-campus Stadium in
Boca Raton, with a VIP Tailgate Party in the stadium’s Priority
Club Lounge. Attending to every detail, Craig Donoff and Glenn
Schwartzman co-chaired a men’s night to remember.
Cleveland to the heights of the NFL, with satisfying football
analysis that extended to a Q/A session. Also on hand were
Hall of Famer Dwight Stephenson and former NFL offensive
lineman Alan Veingrad, among many special guests, and
several Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders. ESPN 760/WPTV sports
anchor Joe Girvan emceed the night and led an auction of
tickets and sports art donated by ESPN 760 and artist Robert
Stephen Simon.
Desmond Howard, a Heisman Trophy winner, Super Bowl MVP
and ESPN college football analyst, gave a rousing keynote.

With our 2012 season drawing to a close, it is my honor as our Federation’s new Chair of Women’s
Philanthropy to thank our passionate volunteers. Women continue to represent more than half the Federation’s
annual campaign, and have served as the catalyst for many successful initiatives and leadership development
opportunities. I am grateful for this opportunity to grow into the shoes of the incredible leaders, including Meryl
Gallatin, with whom I’ve been so privileged to work. And I’m thrilled to be working with our incoming WP
leadership team including Wendy Pressner, our new Campaign Chair.
I also look forward to expanding our Shabbat table by connecting more women at all giving levels to our local and
global Jewish community, and to the joy and nachas we experience – including strengthening our living bridge

Forty exceptional Federation women were recognized for their
special generosity this season, at the Celebration of Women’s
Philanthropy High Tea on March 27. The select guest list included women who had become Lions of Judah or endowed their
Lion gifts in the past year, and those who had increased their
Lion gifts to the Annual Campaign by 10% or more.
On arrival, the women entered an enchanted garden experience
created for them by Wendy Pressner, new Women’s Philanthropy
Campaign Vice Chair, in her beautiful Les Jardins home. They
also enjoyed a live performance of classic Broadway songs
from the talented Joy Colson, Brooke Gladstone and Jeff Taylor,

Luncheon
The roar from 400 members of the “pride” of the Jewish Federation
of South Palm Beach County on February 16 continues to resound
throughout the community and across the globe - wherever the Lions
are making a critical difference to those in need. They were even
louder at this year’s annual gathering at Boca West Country Club,
as the generous Lions celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Lion of
Judah program at the Lion of Judah Luncheon.

The words “I am a proud Lion” echoed throughout the day as
women, including Women’s Philanthropy Vice Chair, Lion of
Judah Barbara Feingold and Luncheon Co-chairs Carol Rifkin
and Eydie Holz, shared their passion and purpose at the podium
and from their seats. They also heard powerful and poignant
personal stories from recipients whose lives have been changed
for the better through the dollars raised by our more than 800
caring, compassionate Lions; Women’s Philanthropy Vice Chair of
Campaign Emily Grabelsky also described the vital “lifeline” that
special needs programs have provided to her family.
Thanks to the great vision and generosity of Marleen Forkas, the
women heard from Campbell Brown, one of the most respected
and recognizable faces in American news. Marleen established the
Marleen Forkas Chair of Contemporary Jewish Issues to ensure that
the Lion Luncheon will always provide its loyal and committed women
donors with the highest caliber speakers. Brown brought the Lions
of all ages to laughter and tears with the intimate, inspiring story of
her path from the Roman Catholicism of her birth to her proud Jewish
identity and rich, rewarding Jewish family and community life.
There were also tears of pride and joy as Women’s Philanthropy
Chair Meryl Gallatin announced that the prestigious 2012 national
Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland award will be presented to Beverly Shapiro,
one of the “visionaries” responsible for bringing the Lion Program to
South Palm Beach County, “the backbone” of our LOJE program, and
a continuing source of inspiration, wisdom and hands-on work for
Women’s Philanthropy.

Women Relax, Refresh &
Rejuvenate “After Hours”
It may have been the first Federation event to which
they brought yoga mats. But, overlooking the
Intracoastal Waterway, women at the season’s second
“After Hours” event relaxed with yoga at poolside,
learned about holistic well-being, and enjoyed
elegant light bites. Cary Caster, founder of 21 Drops,
welcomed the women to her home and introduced
them to a modern line of therapeutic-grade essential
oils created to counteract the effects of busy lives. Leslie
Glickman led a restorative yoga session, and April
Leavy shared information about the Federation’s work
for the well-being of those in need - in our community
and among our global Jewish family. “After Hours” is
designed for women whose lifestyles and schedules
make evenings the time to socialize.

An exceptional night was in store on March 15 at
Woodfield Country Club for more than 150 women
who “bridge the gap” all year by helping those in need.
They came to celebrate, and to hear Julie Orringer,
author of one of their favorite recent books, The Invisible
Bridge, an historical novel and love story set against the
Holocaust in Hungary.
The elegant evening began with a private wine and
hors d’oeuvres reception with the author for Federation’s
Pomegranate donors, who were welcomed warmly by
Rebecca Appelbaum, Women’s Philanthropy Vice Chair
of Pomegranate and the reception co-chairs Joan Hauser
and Randi Winter. Now in its second year, the growing
Pomegranate giving level recognizes women whose
annual campaign gifts range from $1,800 to $4,999
with a specially created sterling silver pin.
The celebration continued with even more camaraderie
as women who contribute $365 or higher to the
annual campaign joined the Pomegranates for the Star
Celebration. Featuring champagne, desserts, coffee and
a keynote from Orringer, this lavish dessert program was
co-chaired by Liz Goldstein and Shirley Solomon. The
evening’s most special guests were a number of local
Holocaust survivors originally from Hungary, including
Orringer’s grandmother, Irene Tibor, whose experiences
inspired the book. Lucy Jacobs, another survivor
from Hungary, eloquently spoke of how essential the
Pomegranates and Stars are to ensuring that survivors
and other local seniors sustain their lives with security,
comfort and dignity. Jacobs’ remarks dovetailed with
those of Kathy Green, Women’s Philanthropy Vice
Chair of Community Development, in underscoring the
importance of the women’s contributions. A spirited,
thoughtful question and answer session with the author
closed the program, and the guests left even more
united in the warmth of this caring, committed, diverse
community of Jewish women.

Leading the Way for Our Jewish Community
Young professionals making a difference, changing the world.
Congratulations to our inaugural Leadership Education and Development
Series (LEADS) members who are completing their first six-month session.
Launched by our Federation’s Metro Division in January, LEADS engages
participants meaningfully and energizes our entire Jewish community. The
program is motivating young Jewish professionals to become involved in
Jewish issues, polish their leadership skills, and learn more about our Jewish
community and our global Jewish family.
From listening to the heads of our local Jewish agencies, community and
select leaders, participating in discussions about pressing global Jewish
issues and hearing from inspiring speakers including Rabbi Josh Broide,
LEADS participants are getting an in-depth look at what it means to be a
Jewish leader within the Federation system. They’ve also had the chance
to build their professional networks, make important new contacts and

It came as no surprise that Metro’s White Party on May 3 was the
season’s premier night out for young Jewish couples and singles
in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Featuring Doug Ellin, creator of HBO’s
“Entourage,” Boca Raton’s most breathtaking ocean views and
exclusive penthouse event space, a DJ from Miami’s ULTRA Music
Festival and the finest young Jewish companions, it couldn’t miss.
Many of the nearly 150 guests, chicly clad in white, had
never attended a Federation event - or certainly not one that
resembled the uniquely elegant White Party – but they’ll be back.
They laughed, rocked, enjoyed top quality cocktails and hors
d’oeuvres, and looked out at a 270 degree expanse of sea and
sand from the 4,500 square foot balcony and 9,000 square
foot white interior of Penthouse Two at One Thousand Ocean.
And they could have gone on soaking up the ambiance and the
company all night.
Headliner Ellin was a true crowd pleaser, bringing everyone
into his entourage. He mingled, posed for photographs,
spoke and answered their questions about his wildly successful
Hollywood career, as well as how he personally gives back to
the Jewish community.

Our Anne and Norman Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation
(JCF) serves as a trusted protector of Jewish life in our community,
in Israel and around the world. It helps us achieve long-term
goals while safeguarding vital programs and services. Whether
you want to support local Holocaust survivors for years to come,
ensure that low-income children have life’s basic necessities, or
support Israel, it can all be done through our JCF.
While our Federation is considered a “checking account” for
Jewish needs, our Foundation is more like a savings account.
It is made up of permanent endowment funds, donor advised
philanthropic funds, lifetime gifts, bequests in wills, trusts
and planned giving programs. Donors can choose to support
the Foundation through unrestricted giving, which means
the funding can be used to address what is deemed most
important or urgent. They can also choose to direct their gift to
benefit a specific program, service or organization.
Tax benefits and other advantages come with different types
of charitable giving. Additionally, certain levels of giving
are recognized through honor societies such as the LOJE
(Lion of Judah Endowment) and PACE (Perpetual Annual
Campaign Endowment).

This year we saw
the incredible

long-term vision of
Anne and Norman
Jacobson in their
gift that named our
Foundation. This
outstanding commitment allows us to work strategically toward
the creation of endowments that will protect our institutions in
perpetuity. We launched the Create a Jewish Legacy Program
that has resulted in 15 partnerships with local Jewish communal
organizations— all working together to promote legacy giving.
And, at our Mitzvah Society Event, we honored 55 professionals
who have developed planned gifts for Foundation. We also
inducted three new professionals and celebrated Don Tescher
for a lifetime of commitment to the Jewish people. This year
alone, Mitzvah Society members have brought in $5.7 million in
expectancies and $3.65 million in received dollars!
Our Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) is growing strong
with 92 members. Ten of us recently traveled to Washington,
D.C, for an intensive three-day advocacy mission and were
briefed by top officials. We are all pleased with this season’s
efforts— and results.

n November 10, 1975, Norman Jacobson was gliding
down a hospital hallway in a wheelchair. He had been
admitted a week earlier suffering from severe back
pain, and was now allowed 30 minutes twice daily to leave the
confines of his room. On this particular day in the Windy City, he
passed a room where, inside, a young lady was needlepointing.
Norm stopped, introduced himself and now 37 years later, Anne
still blushes when Norm tells the story.
Since then, Norm and Anne have built a life together founded
on love, respect, lots of laughs and an extraordinary propensity
for charitable giving. The recent naming of our Federation’s
Anne and Norman Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation is
one of their most recent benevolent acts on a seemingly endless
list that includes helping to establish Keshet, a Jewish-centered
organization for children with developmental disabilities;
dedicating the pharmacy
in
Laniado
Hospital
located in Israel; providing
major support for National
Jewish Health in Denver,
as well as the Boca Raton
Regional Hospital; and
clearing the wait list for
critical services for local
Holocaust survivors here
in South Palm Beach
County. When a deadly
tornado ripped through
Joplin, MO, last year, Anne spent over an hour trying to track
down the organization responsible for assisting the area’s
Jewish population.
Anne says Norm sat on 32 boards during their life in Chicagoland.
Most were Jewish charities, but he also served and supported
Lutheran Social Services, Catholic programs for children and, of
course, their synagogue, Beth Shalom in Northbrook, IL.
When they moved to Boca Raton in 1989, Anne became even more
active in Jewish Philanthropy. She says something just “clicked”
when she visited our Federation. She was particularly impressed by
the campus and by the warmth and friendliness of the people. “This
community has a whole different feel [than Chicago]; one is able
to really see their dollars working. I immediately took to it and saw
that I could make a big difference,” she explains. Unsolicited and
without fanfare, Anne called the Women’s Philanthropy Department
and said she wanted to be a Lion of Judah (a $5,000 annual
commitment to the Campaign).
Since then she has become a LOJE (Lion of Judah Endowment, which
is a $100,000 or higher endowment to our Federation) and served
for many years as the Women’s Chair for St. Andrews Country Club
(at the same time Norm was co-chairing the Men’s Campaign with
the other “Pep” boys: Larry Phillips and Sandy Garfinkle z”l). Anne
also co-chaired the Lion Luncheon, was Women’s Campaign Chair
and eventually served for three years as Chair of the Women’s
Philanthropy Board. She currently serves as Federation Financial
Resource Development (FRD) Chair, a position that has given her a
sense of urgency to invest in a stronger Jewish future.

a Jewish Legacy (CJL)
initiative,
along
with
David Katzman and vicechair
Mark
Schaum.
Anne says “We realize
that
the
Foundation
must
incorporate
all
the agencies of our
Federation, as well as the
entire Jewish community,
the synagogues, schools
and humanitarian organizations. And that is exactly what is
happening through CJL. It is a community-wide effort to protect
and assure that the Jewish programs and agencies which we
cherish will be available for future generations.”
A self-made business success, Norm says his generation has
enjoyed the greatest opportunity and affluence in American history
and he feels a responsibility for our children, grandchildren and
beyond. “If it were not for the ‘Greatest Generation’ where would
any of us be today?” he asks. “Annie would keep saying to me
that we have to do something for the future. That is what prompted
the gift to the Foundation,” Norm explains. Annie smiles wide.
“We’ve been so fortunate in our lives,” Norm continues, sneaking
a loving glance at his wife. “This is our fingerprint. It says, hey, we
were here and this is what was important to us.”

Caring Estate Planning Professionals Honor Donald
R. Tescher, Esq. at PAC Mitzvah Society Reception
Caring estate planning professionals committed to the future of our Jewish
community have honored their own dear friend, colleague and mentor
Donald. R. Tescher, Esq. They came together on March 27 at St. Andrews
Country Club for the Professional Advisory Committee’s (PAC) 8th Annual
Mitzvah Society Cocktail Reception. The prestigious Mitzvah Society

he Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Anne and
Norman Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) recently
honored Donald R. Tescher at the Mitzvah Society reception.
Tescher, of Tescher & Spallina P.A., a tax trusts and estates boutique, is a
JCF Board Member and chairs the Operating Procedures Committee. He
has served as a mentor to many Jewish professionals.
David Pratt, Esq., Chair of JCF and Managing Partner at Proskauer, said
the award could not have been more well deserved. “Donald Tescher is my
personal mentor and dear friend. His generosity of spirit has helped foster
the growth of many professionals. We are fortunate to have him in our
community, informing clients about the mitzvah of Jewish giving —
and inspiring the very best in us,” said Pratt.
What inspired you to become so involved with Jewish philanthropy?
DT: Growing up, my family had always been involved in synagogue life
and this carried over to my life. I continued my Jewish traditions in the
synagogue during college and when I started my own family. I have
always felt that we as a Jewish people need to take care of each other.
So, I have always been supportive of my greater Jewish family.
What is the main thing you’d like people to know about JCF?
DT: We all owe back. Whether it’s through our profession, or by giving our
time or money, we should all feel some obligation to give — especially
those of us who have enjoyed good fortune. The best way to do this
is through the Foundation because it touches so many lives in so many
meaningful ways.
What are the main challenges that face our Foundation?
DT: Many of us are seeing our children leave our community and not
coming back. You don’t have the continuity of Jewish tradition that I had
growing up, because families are more spread out now. The challenge
is to build an unrestricted fund within the Foundation that can generate
significant unallocated dollars to help supplement the annual Federation
campaign. As a tax planner, I always remind my clients that it is better to
give some of our wealth back to our community rather than giving more to
Uncle Sam.

High Level Learning and
Advocacy for PAC Members in DC
A delegation from our Foundation’s Professional Advisory Committee (PAC)
headed to the District of Columbia in April for an exclusive advocacy mission
coordinated by the JFNA Washington office. Their three days in the nation’s
capital included high level briefings on military funding for Israel, in-depth
discussions on sanctions against Iran and comprehensive talks on tax
incentives for charitable giving.
Among the highlights of their “mini-mission” were meetings with Jarrod
Bernstein, White House Director for Jewish Outreach; with Senator Bill
Nelson; with key staff from the Senate Finance and House Foreign Affairs
Committees; and with top public policy staff of JFNA and JCPA. They also
enjoyed a Congressional Reception with Members Ted Deutch, Alan West
and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, visited the Israeli embassy, and toured the U.S.
Holocaust Museum, the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the
Lincoln and Martin Luther King Memorials.

Nearly 150 local estate professionals gathered at Woodfield
Country Club on May 10 for a much anticipated learning and
networking opportunity. Presented by the Federation’s Anne &
Norman Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation Professional
Advisory Committee (PAC), the 28th Annual Seminar for
Ronald L. Siegel, Jeremy Bloom, Donald R. Tescher
Professionals brought together many of the community’s most
influential members in the legal, accounting, investment advisory,
banking and insurance fields, many of whom earned Continuing
Education Credits. Conrad Teitell, a noted national lecturer and
television personality on taxes, estate planning and philanthropy
headlined with his signature dry wit. The guests also heard from
the event co-chairs Eliot S. Popper and Bob Lewis, as well as
from JCF Chair David Pratt and PAC Chair Marjorie Horwin. A

JWF Grants $107,250 as Gilt Groupe Founder Headlines
An innovative keynote and an inspiring announcement highlighted this
year’s Granting Wishes Reception at Boca Rio Country Club on March
5. The Jewish Women’s Foundation of South Palm Beach County’s cuttingedge, hands-on philanthropists announced their 2012 allocations of
$107,250 for seven initiatives to improve the lives of Jewish women and
girls in Israel and locally. Since its founding in 2003, JWF has granted a
total of nearly $440,000.

Marion Goldstein. This fund assists Jewish women and girls
with urgent needs in our own community. JWF recently
allocated funds to help children with special needs attend the
Adolph & Rose Levis JCC’s Camp Kavod.

Exchange Chair
Exchange brought six
women in varied professions from Kiryat Bialik to our
community from February 28 to March 4. The women shared
a packed itinerary of educational, cultural, spiritual and
social activities with five local women, Exchange Chair Kathy
Green, Nel Bloom, Nancy Gefen, Honey Lichterman and
Debbie Weisman.
The women toured the Federation campus and agencies, the
Holocaust Memorial on Miami Beach, Green Cay Nature
Center and The Norton Museum. They enjoyed Friday night
services at B’nai Torah Congregation, followed by a moving,
elegant Shabbat dinner at the home of Ann Kelman, Chair
of the Federation’s P2K Committee. Shabbat also included
a Saturday morning observance on the beach with Rabbi
Jessica Spitalnic Brockman, a past Women’s Exchange alum.
Many participants from previous Women’s Exchanges and
trips to Kiryat Bialik welcomed the visitors and were thrilled to
recharge their connection at a special breakfast.
Close friendships were made and the women were amazed to
discover how many similarities they share. It was truly a visit
that cemented our bonds with our Israeli “sisters,” as Jewish
mothers, professionals, wives and fundraisers.
There was also time for a play, a boat tour, shopping and
dining. But the women’s true highlight was getting to know
each other. They clearly look forward to building their
friendships further, staying in touch electronically until they
reunite in Israel this October. As alums of previous exchanges
know well, our new Women’s Exchange participants are
embarking on life-changing, lifelong relationships.

Kiryat Bialik Teens Visit Boca
Five teens from Kiryat Bialik visited our community for six days in late April.
They got to know local peers and families through home hospitality, and
shared many activities. Among the highlights were participating in Israel
Under the Stars at Sunset Cove Amphitheater, where they presented a
moving Yom HaZikaron/Israel Memorial Day ceremony and joined in the
color guard. They also presented a Yom HaZikaron program for Donna
Klein Jewish Academy students, including speaking about Kiryat Bialik’s
fallen soldiers. They attended classes at DKJA, spent an evening with BBYO,
joined a Hillel event at FAU and visited the Florida Everglades.
Teens visiting from Kiryat Bialik presented a Yom HaZikaron ceremony and joined in
the color guard at Israel Under the Stars.

While in Israel, South Palm Beach County’s 2012 March of
the Living delegation stayed with new friends and observed
Yom HaZikaron/Israel Memorial Day in our Federation’s Sister
City, Kiryat Bialik. Erica Allen, a student at St. Andrews High
School, and Michael Krasna, a student at Weinbaum Yeshiva
High School, placed the Memorial Wreath at the ORT High
School ceremony, as they all came to understand the incredible
impact of the losses most families have experienced in Israel
through war and terror. The students also enjoyed making new
friends across the globe, and look forward to staying in touch
electronically until their next opportunity to reunite in person.

DKJA Students Meet their Peers in
Kiryat Bialik
When 48 DKJA 8th grade students traveled to Israel in April,
they made sure to visit the ORT Dafna School in Kiryat Bialik
on Yom HaZikaron. The group was warmly welcomed by
faculty and students and all enjoyed their time getting to know
each other. The visit was capped off at a poignant school
ceremony on behalf of Israel’s fallen soldiers, in which several
DKJA students were given speaking parts.












Joins Jewish Leaders on
Capitol Hill
Jewish Disability Awareness Month takes place each February,
but our Federation advocates for individuals with disabilities
and promotes greater inclusion in the community all year. When
Jewish community lay leaders and professionals from around the
country traveled to Washington, DC on February 7 to participate
in Jewish Disability Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill, our Federation
was represented by Dr. Michelle LaRocque, Director of Community Special Needs Services. Medicaid was the focus of conversation and advocacy throughout the day’s events.
“The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County serves
thousands of children, adults and seniors with disabilities every
year. Jewish Disability Advocacy Day was an opportunity to
share the remarkable challenges facing our local families,” said
LaRocque. “Medicaid is a critical program for so many people
with disabilities and their families, as well as the Federations
and our beneficiary agencies that serve them.”
Our Jewish community also observed Jewish Disability Awareness
Month by enjoying and raising funds through A Taste of Kosher
Boca. More than 100 participants joined in to network, nosh and
celebrate at The Loft in Boca Raton.

resources, and collaborates with families, agencies, congregations,

Rebranding Israel: Leaders Learn a New Way to Advocate
An enthusiastic group of Federation and JCRC of South Palm
Beach County leaders spent the morning of April 16 learning a
new, effective way to advocate for the State of Israel. Ido Aharoni,
Israeli Consul General for New York & Connecticut, presented
“Branding Israel,” a fresh approach to promoting Israel beyond
debating war and peace, its legitimacy, its security or its borders.
The program was sponsored by the Israeli Consulate of Florida
and Puerto Rico, in conjunction with the JCRC. Additional speakers
included Chaim Shacham, Israel Consul General for Florida and
Puerto Rico, Federation Chair Ellen R. Sarnoff, JCRC Chair Rabbi
David Steinhardt, JCRC Director Stuart Silver, Esq. and staff from
the Consulates General of Israel in Miami and New York.
Mr. Aharoni outlined the importance of adding proactive
messaging on Israel and its people to enhance the world’s
perception of the Jewish state. He recommended promotion of
Israel’s technological superiority, humanitarianism, concern for
the environment, medical and scientific advances; and stature as
a world center for tourism, arts and culture.
After the morning’s great success, Mr. Aharoni will be returning
to our campus in June, extending the branding message to
Jewish lay and professional leaders from throughout the State of
Florida at the 2012 Florida Jewish Symposium.

“Critical Issues: the Impact of a Changing Middle East — A
Conversation with Consul Generals” brought consular leaders
from France, Germany, Israel and the United Kingdom to
Temple Beth El on April 17. The discussion centered on
sanctions imposed upon Iran, its nuclear capability, human
rights violations, and possible reduction of oil shipments to
certain European countries. American Jewish Committee,
Temple Beth El and the JCRC of the Jewish Federation of
South Palm Beach co-sponsored the well-attended evening.

JCRC Brings Students
Together to “Step Up for Israel”
On March 1, one hundred students from area high schools
and colleges learned about efforts to demonize Israel taking
place on college campuses. Joined by staff of local Jewish
youth organizations and several parents at Lakeside Terrace
in Boca Raton, they viewed two films. “Crossing the Line –
the Intifada Comes to Campus” raised awareness of antiIsrael sentiment and activities on college campuses. “Speak
Up for Israel” urged students to get educated, fight apathy,
and promote positive facts about Israel’s active commitments
to democracy, humanitarianism, human rights, environmental
sustainability, developing lifesaving technologies, and
seeking partners to create peace.
The program was presented by the JCRC of South Palm
Beach County, in conjunction with Hillel of Broward and Palm
Beach Counties, Jewish Student Union, BBYO-Gold Coast
Region, Jerusalem Online University, Young Judea, March of
the Living and Alpha Epsilon Pi, The Global Jewish Fraternity.

JCRC Hosts Florida Session
Wrap-up
Our Federation’s JCRC met on March 22 to take a close look
at the 2012 Florida Legislative Session just ended. Bernie
Friedman, Esq., a longtime lobbyist for Florida’s Association
of Jewish Federations, reported on state legislation that might
impact Federation and its beneficiary agencies, as well as bills
of particular interest to the Jewish community. Attendees included
representatives from the offices of national and state elected
officials, and leaders from Jewish advocacy organizations.
Friedman identified proposed legislation that would have adversely
affected our community had it passed (for example, proposed cuts
to Medicaid funding of services needed by seniors, Holocaust
survivors, and those with special needs). The Committee expressed
its appreciation to Friedman and others for maintaining social
service funding for Federation’s constituent agencies in the face of
$2 billion in statewide in budget cuts that will affect other medical
programs which had received the state government support.
Friedman credited our JCRC with generating the Financial
Institutions Act to cut financial ties between Florida-chartered banks
and Iranian-financed terrorists. The bill is the most recent state
advocacy effort of the JCRC, in conjunction other Florida JCRCs and
Federations, to prevent funds from being used in terrorist activities.
Spearheaded by State Representative Mack Bernard and State
Senator Nan Rich, it passed both houses with strong bipartisan
support and has been signed into law by Governor Rick Scott.

1,000 Students from Four Day Schools Unite to Learn
Meaning of Chesed
More than 600 first through fifth grade students from Donna Klein
Jewish Academy (DKJA), Hillel Day School and Torah Academy
gathered on February 22 to learn about and practice the Jewish
responsibility to take care of the people around us. The morning
was only one component of this year’s comprehensive project.
Chesed Day was coordinated by the Federation’s Department of
Jewish Education School Educational Services and representatives
from all four local day schools.
The day began in Zinman Hall on the Jewish Federation of South
Palm Beach County campus. In their varied school uniforms, the
students learned together about chesed and how at any age they
can make a difference.
“Small acts of chesed can be very simple but they can have
huge effects later on,” Hadassah Smolarcik, Hillel’s Judaic
studies coordinator, told the students.
Rabbi Mordechai Yachnes of Torah Academy led everyone in
singing, “Chesed means to help someone. It’s a great mitzvah
and also lots of fun.”
Yafa Levit, DKJA Judaic Studies Principal, conveyed the
importance of making chesed a habit, “One good deed leads
to another. When you go to sleep at night, ask yourself, ‘have I
done an act of chesed today?’”
Breaking into grade-level groups, the students then worked with
partners from other schools. The fifth graders decorated 75

hats, and younger children made 250 cuddly lap blankets, for
seriously ill children receiving care through Chai Lifeline, Paint
the Caps, St. Mary’s Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital. Along with cards they’d made and chocolate bars,
they packed then creations into boxes purchased from Family
Promise and hand-decorated.
This Chesed Day’s lessons began much earlier, as a group of
high school students from DKJA and Weinbaum Yeshiva High
School (WYHS), researched and selected organizations to
benefit from the project. Then, on February 7, the high school
students taught 350 children from the middle schools about
chesed. They also prepared a group of middle school students to
lead the lessons for the elementary grades on February 22.
By delivering the decorated boxes to the recipient organizations,
the high school students completed a “chesed circle,” while
nearly 1,000 students carry their lessons far into the future. And
the students from South Palm Beach County’s four diverse Jewish
Day schools learned more than their deeply shared commitment
to chesed.
“Today made many people feel a part of something wonderful
- not only for the chesed for others, which goes without saying,
but hearing kids wish each other well, making friends from other
schools, asking for phone numbers, and working together to
make a difference,” said Beth Janock, a teacher at Hillel.

Teens Return from Life-changing March of the Living
Once again, a group of local high school students has returned
from the March of the Living. Strengthened in their Jewish
identities, they are also deeply committed to bear witness to the
Holocaust and make sure “Never Again” is more than a slogan.
On April 15, after months of class preparation, forty South Palm
Beach County students boarded planes to Warsaw, to begin
the renowned two-week trip that culminates this extraordinary
Holocaust education program. They were accompanied by two
local Holocaust survivors and other supportive adults.
They traveled the depths of the Holocaust in the camps,
the ghettos and the remnants of what were thriving Jewish
communities in Poland, marched from Auschwitz to Birkenau
Local Teens Connect with Jewish
Student Union
The Jewish Student Union keeps reaching out to enhance teens’
Jewish identity, nurture a connection to the State of Israel, inspire
an enduring relationship with the Jewish people and provide for a
deeper involvement with the Jewish community.
JSU hosts weekly club meetings at Southeast FL public high
schools. The clubs, including those in South Palm Beach County,
continue to grow and thrive. In addition to our club meetings, JSU
has been holding coffee talk, The Hot Spot, and Shabbat dinners
in an effort to engage a wide range of teens in fun and educational ways. Teens from Boca Raton Community, West Boca,
Olympic Heights, and Spanish River Community High Schools are

cohorts from 45 countries, and went on to celebrate the glory of
the modern State of Israel in our homeland.
In Israel, they stayed with new friends and observed Yom
HaZikaron/Israel Memorial Day in our Federation’s Sister City,
Kiryat Bialik. They also toured historic sites in Israel, joyously
celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut/Israel Independence Day on Ben
Yehuda Street in Jerusalem, and enjoyed a March of the Living
Mega Event Celebration for 6,000 marchers from 15 countries.

The first JFS Breast Cancer Symposium brought together more than 100 participants
to learn about breast cancer care and prevention, share survivor and previvor
experiences, and forge new friendships. This year’s inspiring and educational
combined Day Schools pre-Passover food drive and packaging collected a wealth of
staples as well as treats. The annual Model Seder provided hundreds of seniors with the
opportunity to observe the holiday that many would otherwise miss.

Purchase of New Campus for Miracle Price: In December 2011, Torah Academy of
Boca Raton purchased a 2.5 acre campus just 300 yards from its current facility in
order to accommodate its remarkable growth over the past few years. Three years ago
the enrollment stood at 124 students and today that same campus is being stretched
with current enrollment of 204 students, including early childhood through 6 grade,
with a new middle school. The school had to turn away 18 children this year simply
due to lack of space. The new building on Spanish River Boulevard, formally Summit

Banner Year for WYHS College Admissions: The nation’s top colleges understand that

Wandering Jews for Tu B’Shvat: In celebration of Tu B’Shvat, fifth grade Hebrew School students planted
cuttings from “Wandering Jew” plants. The students are learning firsthand that like the Jewish people, this hardy plant
survives under any conditions! Congregation Shirat Shalom offers affordable Religious School classes from kindergarten
through confirmation as well as an online tutoring program. Classes are held at Loggers’ Run Middle School and services are
held at Olympic Heights High School.

The dedication of a new Sefer Torah by Robert and Nina Levine in memory of their parents was among the significant events at
Congregation Torah Ohr at the beginning of the current season. Recently, a major donation from Shmuel and Rivka Brandman
established the Herman Lazar Chevra Mishnayot. The Chevra Mishnayot enables members to participate in the study of the
Mishna, the compendium of the Oral Law, which is the lifeblood of the Jewish people. Congregation Torah Ohr is proud that Torah
study is part of the synagogue’s ongoing activities.

Kol Ami, a small Reconstructionist congregation for active adults, celebrated its 25th Anniversary at a gala luncheon on
February 22 at Brooks restaurant in Deerfield Beach. Nearly 70 people were treated to a delicious meal, regaled with
wonderful stories from Kol Ami’s past by current and past members of the congregation, and entertained by the fabulous,
funny Dr. Joyce Saltman, who served as MC. The afternoon ended with a joyful sing-a-long led by the talented Rena Schack.
