2016 Convention Report - BueLingo Beef Cattle Society
BUELINGO NEWSLETTER
2016 CONVENTION ISSUE
July 2016
President’s Message: Rick Smith - Apple River, IL
Hi Everyone, If you missed the National Convention, you missed a good time. Farm tours showed a lot of nice BueLingo
Cattle. A big Thanks to the Blair’s and Monson’s for all the work they did. Thanks Ron for doing the convention 2017.
Hope to see more members next year and more cattle.
Convention 2016 and the 2016 National BueLingo Cattle Show - held June 24th & 25th, 2016.
Intense work started on Wednesday and Thursday of the week with several
of the local BueLingo folks showing up to set up gates and prepare the
fairgrounds for the cattle and show. (Thank you Rick Smith, Cory Blair, Harvey Blair, & Mark & Keaton Wulfekuhle) Harvey had enough gates to go
around the cattle barn and gate to the wash racks and back to the show barn.
(When the KY gate man drives in and Harvey says he needs more gates, I’ll
have to remind him of just how many he has setting around somewhere.)
Some cattle made it to the fairgrounds on Thursday, but most of the activity
started Friday morning with cattle coming in. The Board of Directors met
at the Blair’s kitchen table with Tonya Albarado on Speaker phone.
22 joined in, and we started our farm tours at Rick & Lynda Smiths’ with a caravan ride through the pastures. Lots of red
BueLingo cattle at Rick’s with lots of calves at their sides.
From Rick’s we went back up the road a couple miles
to Scott and Judy Breners’ pasture, where several red
heifers came over the hill to check us out. Then a
drive down through the valley next to the Apple River
to see over 65 black cows & calves. (And we were
able to see the view of the Apple River from the front
deck of Scott and Judy’s. What a beautiful site.
A cross country trek took us into Wisconsin and the Monson’s farm
where we found Dean and LuAnn waiting to greet us and begin a hay ride
First to see their red BueLingo herd which also had some black cattle who
were red carriers.
We visited 2 other pastures and
was able to see Obama of KW.
He was raised by Karen Walters
of Rice Lake, WI, sold to Gene
Kissner, transferred to Perry
Fitch to use for a couple of years
and now being used by Dean for
a few years.
After the pasture tours, LuAnn welcomed us into the hay mow, which was all decked out with lots of BueLingo decorations and
a feast of BBQ’d Beef and Turkey Dressing sandwiches, fruit, and a variety of sweet treats. Neighbors, Dave & his son Jeff
Eckerman entertained us with Country songs into the evening. A video played with lots of excerpts from the past BueLingo
Worlds and 25th anniversary issue. Made for lots of conversations. LuAnn and Dean hosted about 50 convention attendees for
the evening.
(Harvey wanted to sing, too)
Saturday morning brought a lot of “buzzing” at the
Jo Daviess County Fairgrounds in Warren, IL as 32
head of cattle were being prepped for the National
BueLingo Cattle Show.
Left: Nate Harm was being shy and taking a little
break before the show begins.
Nash Heimann was prepping his steer. I don’t think he quit smiling all day long.
Jared Bueling of Sheldon, ND brought two heifers
to compete in the Junior heifer division,
and I think Rick Smith of Apple River, IL
is giving him a few quick pointers.
We began the morning with Showmanship classes while the animals and the “kids” were fresh. Eight adults began the
classes while the Juniors and youth looked on to learn as the 2016 judge, Mike Schoger of Winslow, IL instructed them in some
of the basics of showmanship. A good place for our youth to learn and to prepare their animals for their own local and county
fairs.
Mike, our judge is a cattle breeder of mostly Maine-Ajus. He also has sold many club calves and raises feeders through to the
finished product. Mr. Schoger presented each youth showman with a breaking halter for their participation in the showmanship
classes. The breaking halter will tighten up when needed to help control the animal, and then loosen up. It is not to be used for
dragging when leaving a halter on the animal continuously.

Shows...Glad to see she joined us with a great bull calf at

Smith, BBCS
President
The Show concluded with the town’s noon whistle, so we were off to the Blair’s. 44 joined us for a light lunch and stayed for
the General Membership meeting.
Farm tours began with a caravan to see Blair’s Red BueLingo herd of cattle, and around the block to the other four groups of
cattle.
Some attendees lingered in the air conditioning and visited while others went back to freshen up at the hotel. But all (and a few
more) showed up around 5:30 to share in the BueLingo Prime Rib supper. A big thank you goes out to Mary (Allen) Tessendorf for cooking the meat and tators and making the awesome BueLingo Cake. We topped the night with “ice cream” and berries or rootbeer floats. Then we got down to business for the awards of the National Show.
2016 Premier Breeder:
Dean Monson of Gratiot, WI
The Premier Breeder was established by Russell
Bueling and has been kept active by a Russ Bueling
Memorial Fund to award the exhibitor that displayed
and presented their animals in a respectable manner.
The judge is asked to pick the winner by what he has
observed in the barns and the show ring. Our judge
was impressed with the uniformity of Dean’s cattle
and how the family worked together showing and
were always prompt at the show ring waiting on deck
for their call into the ring. Well done Monson family!
The evening concluded by auctioning donated items, and we had some pretty great BueLingo items, plus some baskets that represent some of the states our participants came from. (WI and MN, ND, IL). Our notorious auctioneer, Perry Fitch, helped to
raise over $600 to benefit the BBCS. Thank you to all who so generously donated items, and those who purchased them.
Danny Meyer donated a window block with BueLingo scene:
Tammy Fitch donated a lady bug garden decoration and matched the proceeds to the MS foundation.
Colene Miller donated a cooler bag full of goodies
Marcia Fenner donated a cheese and homemade wine basket
Tammy Fitch donated homemade Salsa basket and items from MN
Lynda Smith donated a BueLingo colored scrunchy decoration and Oreo’s in a Warren, IL pie plate
Rodney & Sylvia Chaplin donated items from Northern WI and MN
Ron Hoida donated a BueLingo Block puzzle
Jared Bueling donated a Belted Resin calf and a Wrought Iron BueLingo Sign
Lacey Johnson donated two Flower pot decorations (1 red and 1 black) Hanging BueLingo Flower Pot Chimes, and a BueLingo
sign with flower pot ornaments.
Dean & LuAnn Monson donated 2 Welcome Signs one with a Black BueLingo and one with a Red BueLingo
Gene & Betty Kissner of Corcoran, MN donated a BueLingo tanned hide. (Can be seen in the front left of the picture to
the left) Chances were offered for the luck of the draw. 3 year old Archer Johnson pulled the lucky card out of the
bucket which just happened to have his Grandpa, Randy Sigafus, holding the matching half. A great way to end the evening, as Archer’s mother, Lacey Johnson, donated some beautiful BueLingo décor of which one is being displayed on
MY front porch.
Secretary’s Message July 2016:
A Giant Belted Thank-you from Harvey & Sue Blair
Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2016 National Show and Convention a success. Great participation and some outstanding farm tours. Folks, if you like seeing lots of good BueLingo cattle, you should have joined us this year, as we have 4
producers within a 15 mile radius, and we were able to see most of their cattle. Everyone always chips in and lends a hand as
needed and this year wasn’t any different. We had plenty of help with set up and clean up afterwards. Actually had to slow
some of them down, as we were hosting a couple of reunions over the 4th of July and needed the tables left up. We were able to
move some of the BueLingo promotional items with a buy two get one free special. Our goal is to not carry promotional items
anymore, because there are so many shops set up to digitalize just about anything you can think of. We are unable to keep the
wide assortment of sizes needed. We may keep some unique novelty items around in the future. We still have plenty of Frisbee's (lime green and orange) @ $2.00 each plus postage. Buy 2 get one free. There are some t-shirts and denim shirts left.
Will have a complete listing in the next BueLingo World, or call and get sizes, etc available. 815-745-2147…Sunday morning
after the show we had over an inch of rain. Harvey and I spent an hour at the fairgrounds drinking coffee, eating donuts and
waiting for the rain to stop. (the first chance we actually talked in about 2 weeks-I guess we were each busy doing our own thing
to get ready for the convention) Our show participants came in and gathered their belongings and cattle and headed (safely)
home. We still had plenty of help hanging around, so quickly gathered up ALL those gates and supplies and headed for home
too. Monday morning, Harvey and Cory and Rick Smith finished the manure clean-up. I call that a successful, happy weekend.
Hall of Honor 2016 – Judy Brener of Apple River, IL
The purpose of the BueLingo Beef Cattle Society Hall of Honor is to formally
recognize the efforts of individuals, groups, or events whose actions serve to enhance, promote and further develop the BueLingo Beef Cattle and to preserve the history of the
breed.
Judy’s history with the BueLingo Society started when her father, Don stepped
into the Society with both feet. Upon Don’s passing, Judy stepped into his shoes and was
appointed to replace Don as a director of the Society from 1995-1997. In 1997, Judy was
then elected to the board for 2 – 3 year terms. After 5 years of being off the board she was
then elected again in 2008 for 2 more 3 year terms. She served as President from 20012002 and 2002-2003. She served as Vice President from 1999-2001 and Vice President in
2013-2014. Judy has held the most time in office than any other as a director.
Judy along with her family and the Monson’s of Gratiot, hosted the 1995 Convention headquartered out of Dubuque, Iowa with the National show held in Darlington, WI,
where they exhibited the Grand Champion BueLingo – Apple Winona WRC and the Reserve Grand Champion Apple Raspberry WRC.
Judy took on the duties of BueLingo World Editor in 2004 and continues to help
collect information and pictures.
Coming into the Society on basically the ground floor, Judy was instrumental in
making a lot of decisions concerning the belt and white feet, and closing down the pedigrees on the Bull side.
Thank you Judy for all you have done to help promote BueLingo and recruit
BueLingo breeders. May you continue to do so for many years to come.
