Zone 6 Grand Tour
Since I’ve mentioned it many times in this column, you won’t
be surprised to hear that the Zone 6 Grand Tour is happening.
The Tour will pass through our region on July 30-31, 2015. On
the morning of July 30th, the Tour will leave Canmore, travel
along the Icefields Parkway, go through Jasper, and spend the
night in Edson. We will have dinner at the Mountain Steak and
Pizza House on HWY 16 west at 7:00 PM. The next morning the
Tour will depart Edson and travel to Lloydminster where members of the Living Skies Prairie Region will take over the Tour
and lead it to Saskatoon for the night.
Hooray! We have a new website. Our Webmeister extraordinaire,
Arthur Potts, has shepherded its creation. The new address is
www.pcapolarregion.com. Arthur’s article in this edition of Bear
Facts explains how members of the Polar Region can sign in to
the site. Please visit the site often to keep up to date on upcoming events.
Saskatchewan Jaunt
As most of you know, from September 5-7 this year, our annual
fall Jaunt will be travelling east for a change to the beautiful Elk
Ridge Lodge on Waskesiu Lake, Saskatchewan. However, you
may not know that when our VP and Tour Director, Ivor Lammerink, organizes these fall Jaunts, the hotels require the club
to make a financial commitment to fill a minimum number of
rooms. The result of this standard industry practice is that if for
some reason the minimum number of rooms are not filled by
Jaunt participants, your club is held financially responsible for
the cost of the unused rooms. There are presently spots available for this year’s fall Jaunt. If you are planning on attending,
please get your registration into Ivor as soon as possible. The
club’s deadline for informing the Elk Ridge Lodge of the number
of attendees is July 29th. Please use the registration form in the
Q1 edition of Bear Facts that was emailed to you, or go to the
Newsletter tab on our new website.
If you are interested in driving the complete tour, which starts
and ends around Seattle and is expected to take two weeks, or
if you plan on joining the tour enroute, please register at www.
motorsportreg.com.
There are many spots in the Polar Region to join the tour, if you
wish. On July 30th we will be at Saskatchewan River Crossing at
noon and Jasper about 4:00 PM. We expect to arrive in Edson
about 5:30 PM and leave the next morning, Friday July 31st,
about 9:00 AM. We will travel along HWY 16 eastward to the
trestle about an hour east of Edson, then turn north on to HWY
757 for some back-road driving. We will have lunch at Cora’s in
Sherwood Park at 222 Baseline Road, unit 374. Even if you can’t
join the tour for a drive, please join us for dinner at Edson or
lunch at Cora’s. Please, don’t forget to register your attendance.

Our club would not be the great club it is without the tireless work of our volunteers. Our club Officers who help to stay the course, at the Regional and National
level, making sure all those things we enjoy and take for granted are there. Communication is paramount in successfully running our club and without the mighty
effort of our newsletter editors and/or webmasters we would not be the club we
are today.
Take some time to look at all the events being put on in our zone and take a moment to think about all the effort, planning and coordination required to make it
happen. That’s volunteers at work! Without them where would our club be? That’s
a scary thought. The next club event you attend, thank the volunteer(s) that make
it happen. Hopefully it’s you taking the well deserved “Thank you” from your fellow club members. To all the volunteers that make it happen for us here in Zone 6
“Thank You”!!!!
The Zone 6 Grand Tour is coming to the Zone 6 Region you’re a member of; will
you be part of the adventure? I can’t wait to do this! This is a huge undertaking
(volunteers at work!) that will start July 25 in the Pacific Northwest Region and end
2 weeks later, August 8, in the Oregon Region. We will drive in ALL 16 Regions. If
you can’t do the whole tour, we understand, and are planning it so members can
pop in and out as schedule and time permits. Lots more to come as we put finishing
touches and details together. I hope to see each and everyone of you on the road!
I’ll see you in the zone!

Spring Fling 2015
Our Spring Fling sold out quickly and was very well
attended with several new members joining us for the
first time. We had an excellent venue at the Homefire Grill
with wonderful and unusual foods. For many of us, it was
our first event of the season and therefore a great chance
to catch up and plan for the summer. Many thanks to our
sponsor, Marvin Ostrom, for his support of this event.

Our Polar Region Website…
A New Beginning
Webmaster, Arthur Potts
By now, you likely know that we have a totally new website.
While our previous website served its purpose, it certainly needed updating. We started from the very beginning, defining first
what we felt was important to members and how best to provide them information in an attractive and easy to use layout.
We hope you will agree that we have met our objectives.
plete schedule of all types of events is accessed through the
Events tab on the menu near the top of the page.
Our home page has a rotating gallery, although I don’t know
why anyone would want to move away from the GT3 in the picture above (yes, I am biased). Our next event is shown on the
home page, and our entire website is mobile/tablet friendly.
Click on our Newsletter tab and you will be taken to the most
recent issues of our award winning Bear Facts (you must login
to see more than the sample copy).
Perhaps one of the most asked for features of our new website
is the ability to pay for Memberships on-line. We have one, two
and three year terms available so that you can match your Polar
Region membership term with the length of your PCA term.
Additionally, prior to your renewal date, you will be sent an
e-mail alert automatically, alerting you that it is time to renew
your membership.
If you scroll down a bit further on the home page you will see
our events by category. A description of our events and a comBEAR FACTS / Q2 2015
We have also included some advertising from our key sponsors
in a rotating gallery at the bottom of the home page. We will be
updating the two we currently show with others in the coming
weeks as we get additional graphics from our sponsors.
We have added the ability to pay for events through our website, such as our annual Spring Brunch at the Royal Glenora.
This capability also allows us to ticket events that have no
charge, but have limited space.
Looking to the future, we are going to be adding some additional features as well – Classifieds, and a Polar Wear store.
So, go ahead browse the new site and let us know what you
think. If there is something you would like to see that we
haven’t included, let us know.

Unlocking the Sound of the 2.9l
Carnewal GT
Exhaust Mod
Article & Photos by
Mark Lowrie
For years I dreamed of Porsche ownership
and finally late in 2013 that possibility
presented itself. My car of choice was a
gently used 2009 base model Cayman
and my ownership desire became a reality. I have had my Cayman for two driving
seasons and I am really enjoying the car. I
consider my car the perfect combination
of looks, handling, power and sound.
mained. The conversations I read online
claim that the modification gives you
the sound of the PSE all the time. I was
hooked and the added benefit was that
I didn’t have to take my exhaust off and
send it to Europe. I could have the mod
done at Cantrell Motorsports in Bellevue
Washington, the only one outside of
Europe licensed to do it.
Exhaust Sound…the Porsche flat 6 has a
unique sound and I wasn’t disappointed
when I started my car up for the first time.
It sounded great and only got better as
the revs increased. One particular day I
heard another Cayman with the 2.9l engine that sounded a bit better and I had
to ask its owner why that was. He had the
Sport Exhaust option in his car, something my car did not come equipped
with. My quest for that sport exhaust
sound, or something like it, began.
As the winter of 2014/15 dragged on
and as I continued to delay the prospect
of laying underneath the car on frozen
ground taking off the exhaust, I started
to think there could be a better way to do
this. What if I planned a summer road trip
from Edmonton to Cantrell in Bellevue
WA and have them do the take off, modification and installation…hummmm.
I looked at various aftermarket mufflers
and read the online posts about the pros
and cons of each. Undecided I continued
to look at options that would provide
the best sound option for my 2.9l. Power
increase claims from a muffler change are
dubious in my opinion so if I got more
power, great, but I was after the sound
that I heard from the car that I mentioned
earlier.
Planning began and all the roads in BC
and Washington that I’ve always wanted
to drive were in the mix as I considered
the route. The plan couldn’t be all driving
since I wanted to make the trip with my
wife and she had one rule…”I don’t want
to drive every hour of every day.”
A successful marriage and the right mix
of compromise and my wife agreed to go,
as long as there was a proper balance of
driving and sight seeing. I had to come
up with a route and activities that we
both would be happy with.
Port Angeles and Hwy 99 from Whistler to
Cache Creek BC. I needed to mix in activities like river rafting, hiking, the Seattle
Space needle and Canada Day in Victoria.
I got her okay and things where set.
The final plan was a 10 day trip that
would take us from Edmonton to southern BC, to Bellevue/Seattle, Victoria, Whistler and back to Edmonton. The departure
date was picked, the route was set, the
non-driving activities planned and the
accommodations booked in February. All
I had to do was wait out the winter.
On June 25 we left Edmonton with the
plan to be back home on July 4. As we
went south and got closer to the US border, the temperatures began to increase,
gradually making its way through the
high 20s into the mid 30s. The Cayman
took the heat in stride not deviating from
the typical 80C running temperature
despite the AC running full blast to keep
things comfortable inside. The outdoor
temperature peaked at 41C on June 27
in Winthrop WA as you can see from the
picture below.
Finally I settled on the Carnewal GT
I wanted to drive the roads of southern
exhaust modification of the stock exhaust BC, Hwy 20 in the Washington Cascade
because once done the stock look remountains, Hurricane Ridge Road near

On June 29, I arrived at Cantrell Motorsports for my 8:30am
appointment and was very impressed with their shop.
PHOTOS
Outside view
Inside the shop
Some non-Porsche eye candy scattered about
and some of the same of the Porsche variety
To go with the new sound I decided to replace the single oval
outlet port from the stock exhaust (Picture 1) with a Black
Chrome dual pipe outlet from Fabspeed (Picture 2). While it
doesn’t add any performance, I really like the look of the dual
outlets vs the stock single outlet.
The whole job to remove the exhaust, make the modifications
to each side and re-install took 4 hours. The change they made
inside the exhaust is proprietary and I couldn’t witness exactly
what they did in the weld shop, but the results speak for itself.
The guys I met at Cantrell were great and knowing how far I’d
travelled and still had to go, they made sure that tire pressure
and oil level was right before I left the shop.
The exhaust sound is more sharp at startup but at idle the difference is almost unchanged from what it was and there is no
droning at normal highway speeds. Where the fun begins is
when the revs increase. The new sound at higher revs is fantastic and a drastic change for the better from what it was. I’d recommend this mod to anyone looking for the same thing I was.
I’m really happy with the outcome and got the chance to listen
to that new exhaust sound as it echoed off tunnel walls when I
was on the Hurricane Ridge Road the next day. To me it sounds
like a super car at the higher revs, not something you hear
people say of a 2.9l engine…but maybe I’m biased.
The Cayman performed flawlessly on the 4000+km trip, delivering an average of 7.8l/100km going up and down mountains,
throwing in some “spirited” driving on the twisty roads. Now for
that next mod…

Track Time
Event Coordinator,
Bert Klaassen
June 21, members of the Polar Region were invited by Track Junkies to participate in one of their lapping events at Castrol
Raceway near the Edmonton International Airport. We had 8 cars and 11 drivers, nine members from the Polar Region
and two members from the Calgary Wildrose Region. We fell short of the 12 cars needed to run in our own group but Paul
Conquest of Track Junkies was able to rearrange the groups and distribute us among the Intermediate and Novice run
groups. Thanks to Paul for his efforts to accommodate us.
Each of the drivers had an in-car instructor to introduce them to the track plus several sessions of driving theory which was
very helpful in determining what the car was doing and where the driving limits were. Each of us had the opportunity to
run four, 20 minute sessions during the course of the day. At the end of the day we all agreed that we had learned some
important aspects on handling our vehicles at speed and that we had thoroughly enjoyed both the driving experience and
making some new friends. We look forward to doing another event in the near future and encourage more members to
come out and experience the excitement of running a Porsche on the track.
We wish to express our appreciation to Track Junkies, Paul Conquest, his instructors and track team for an extremely wellrun and safe event. Also our appreciation to Castrol Raceway for providing hot dogs, burgers and drinks for all participants.

getting to know
This month we are highlighting Printer World in
our ongoing series recognizing organizations that
have been strong supporters of the Polar Region.
We will look at the business and the people and
learn why we might want to consider dealing with
them, if we have not had the opportunity to do so
in the past. And we will, of course, learn of Paul’s
interest in Porsches!
Article by Arthur Potts
Printer World is a local business owned by Paul Curcio, but it
had its beginnings before Paul’s involvement. The business
was started in 1985 by a husband and wife team, and Paul
bought the business from them in 2003. That owner then
moved to the island for retirement – but he could only stand
one year away from work and started back working with Paul
in what would become their Nanaimo branch.
Since 2003, Printer World has seen incredible growth and
they now have offices not only in Edmonton and Nanaimo,
but also in Red Deer, Fort McMurray, Vernon and Kelowna –
and there may be more on the way.
HP – A Relationship from the
Very Beginning of Printers
Printer World has been involved with HP since HP invented
the first printer and have partnered with them ever since. In
fact Printer World is recognized as an Elite dealer, an indication of their expertise and capabilities in providing solutions
for clients. They also offer Lexmark, Okidata and KIP.
Printer World’s focus is so much more than just providing
equipment, consumables and printer service. They augment
these fundamentals with the ability to help clients reduce
the cost of operating their printing equipment – using innovative ways to save money on paper and consumables – and
there is real opportunity when one considers that over 20%
of print jobs are never picked up (and Printer World does
have a solution for that)!
While the solution varies, depending on the size of the business
and the number of printers and offices involved, Printer World
has the ability to tailor the solutions to meet the needs of clients,
resulting in improved efficiencies and significant cost savings.
IT departments are loathe to involve themselves in managing a company’s printing fleet, as it is an area they don’t
often understand well. Printer World is ideally positioned to
remove the management of all aspects of a company’s printers, to the point that Printer World can provide consumables
just as they are required.
BEAR FACTS / Q2 2015
One of the technical innovations at HP is the move to high
speed inkjet printing, offering an economical, effective solution that allows not only printing, but the replacement of
conventional copiers.
When one realizes that 3% of a company’s top line is involved in printing, we can begin to understand just how
significant the opportunity for optimization is, as printing is
really one of the last areas that companies focus on.
Paul Curcio –
Porsche Through and Through
While some of us dream of a whole variety of cars, from a
number of manufacturers, Paul has been loyal and focused
on Porsche since the very beginning. He recalls dreaming
of the 944, and when he was just 23, he bought his first
one, albeit used. He later bought a 928, and then in 1988 he
bought a 1977 930 turbo, a car he would love to have today
(wouldn’t we all).
Over the years Paul has had seven, yes seven, Boxsters. He
would buy them, sometimes owning them for under a year,
and then sell them for at least as much as he paid, and often
making money. This is certainly a trick many of us could learn
– buying sports cars and not losing money – I always knew
that Paul was a clever guy, but this, this proves it!
Although Paul has really only ever been interested in
Porsches, he did apply his business skills to some BMWs as
well, buying several 2002s (the model, not the year), fixing
them up and selling them for a profit.
But, Paul says he has found his happy place with his current
fleet of Porsches. He owns two Cayennes, a 2005 Boxster and
a 2007 turbo that really is a beautiful colour combination.
When asked what Porsche he might buy in the future, he just
gazed off in the distance, suggesting to me that while he
didn’t state any particular object of his future desire, there is
almost certainly some Porsche acquisition in his future…

Mystery
Tour
JULY 2015
Event Coordinator, Paul Curcio
This year our Annual Mystery
Tour took place July 10. The
weather was beautiful, not a
drop of rain.
We met first at Modern Auto
Body, a long time sponsor of
this event. We were treated
to our first opportunity to
visit and view some great cars
Bar in the west end. We were
again treated to wonderful
hospitality with finger food
and drinks, again courtesy of
Modern Auto Body.
In all we had 35 Porsches and
45 people attend including
several new members attending their very first event with
the Polar Region. Porsche
Edmonton provided many
Porsche branded door prizes
and Modern provided a $500
appearance package which a
long time Polar member won.
It was a lovely evening to chat,

what summer is meant to
bring; good company, good
food and of course, great cars.

André Dufault
Bear Facts was recently entered in the PCA
newsletter contest and at Porsche Parade
the winners were announced. We took second place in our class. Congratulations to
Angel, the actual talent behind the newsletter. As well, thanks to all the contributors
and sponsors that make it possible for us
to produce such a great award winning
publication.
The big news of course… finally we have
a website we can be proud of. Be sure to
check it out and to thank Arthur Potts for
his time and effort to make it happen.
Arthur has really spent an amazing amount
of time not only on the website but also
in developing our Facebook presence. Additionally he organized the detailing session
at Auto Obsessed, has been helping with
other events and contributing with articles
to the newsletter. Thank you very much
Arthur for all your contributions (and thanks
also to Gwen for sharing you with us).
As Tim Hagner our zone representative has
stated, our clubs and the events we enjoy
would not be possible without the myriad
of volunteers it takes. Arthur as an example
has been with the club for many years and
has only recently become active. Should
you decide it’s your time and you would
like to become more involved with the club,
contact any member of the executive to
discuss it. Our annual general meeting is
coming up in November and there will be
some positions to fill. As well we are always
on the lookout for volunteers to help with
events as they unfold.
While this hot, dry weather has been causing problems for many it certainly isn’t
those that are fortunate enough to turn on
the AC or put the top down. It’s wonderful
weather for driving. Polar Region members
have been enjoying the coffee mornings &
breakfast drives. The Mystery Drive had 35
Porsches with 45 members enjoying the
event organized by Paul Curcio. As always
Dean and staff at Modern Autobody went
out of their way to help make this event
enjoyable and memorable.
The Spring Fling again sold out quickly. I’ve
noticed over the years that Polar Region
members seem to love good eats, drinks
and the opportunity to talk everything
Porsche. If you missed that opportunity
you won’t want to miss the BBQ. Again, it is
limited so if you plan to attend rsvp asap.
In June, members had the opportunity to
tour Auto Obsessed and also discuss the
latest in upgrading Porsche Audio systems
with FX Audio. Attendance was greater than
expected and so the group was divided in
two. Troy Semeniuk owner of Auto Obsessed
provided a presentation on detailing products and services. If you have not yet been
to their facility…you must, it is an amazing shop and Troy truly is obsessed. Darcy
Semeniuk and Way Lieng Choy of FX Audio
not only provided some great ideas for audio
solutions but also lunch – much appreciated.
It’s always enjoyable and valuable to meet
with those that really shine in their fields and
these three gentleman certainly do – thanks
to each of you for sharing with us.
While some events have been cancelled,
there are still many to enjoy. The Saskatchewan Jaunt promises to be a fun filled three
day event. The jaunts tend to be sold out
before the deadline so if you’re looking to attend, contact Ivor sooner than later. Keep an
eye on the website for changes to events.
We are always on the lookout for great
Porsche stories and photos. If you have one
to share give me a call or send it to me. In
this issue we have an article by Mark Lowrie
on his road trip to Seattle and visit to Cantrell
Motorsports to have a Carnewal GT muffler
conversion. Thanks Mark for sharing the
story. As well, remember that advertising
Porsche goods in the newsletter is free for
members. The next issue will be in October.

OUR ADVERTISERS
Our advertisers are very important to us; as we are to them. We of course enjoy the revenue they provide,
allowing us to produce this newsletter as well as other club events. Advertisers also provide a source of
information and expertise to us. They enjoy the opportunity and exposure to a very select group of potential
clients. It’s a two-way street. Many of our advertisers offer discounts to club members – mention your
membership! Even if there is no discount available, knowing that you are a club member will usually enhance
the relationship. As well, the business will have some sense of what advertising with us is achieving for them.
