LAST DAY to redeem your 2013 Golf Shop Tournament Credits … December 15, 2013 1 A message from our General Manager As we say “farewell” to summer, if you’re like me, you’re probably ready to enjoy all the activities fall brings; football, brisk walks with your family, cooler weather, fall colors… football, cozy fireplaces, and the holidays, and did I say, football? Of course, September is still one of the best times of the year to play golf and also, a perfect time to invite your friends to enjoy the club with you, or become members too! Do you have any friends who have been considering membership at the club? Beginning October 1st, the initiation fee to join our Meadowbrook and Chesdin clubs will be $500. I encourage you to take advantage of one last month with zero initiation and bring guests to the clubhouse. We are two clubs with many recreational activities to suit all ages. Our mild weather in Virginia allows for enjoyable afternoons playing tennis or golf, for the whole family. This fall, major high school golf events will be highlighted at the clubs. Junior golf has always been excellent at Meadowbrook and Chesdin, and we hold a rich tradition of inspiring talented golfers, from the Wadkins brothers to our current superstars, Adam Ball and Lyberty Anderson. Membership at the clubs is the perfect offering to high school student you may know. As September rolls around, enjoy your club. If you haven’t been involved in the social aspect of country club life, you don’t know what you’re missing. Get plugged in! Come by for a stroll in the lovely Gillette Garden, a game of tennis or Sunday Brunch. Let the children play on the playground. Meadowbrook and Chesdin are both places where families can be “together”. Enjoy weekly mealtimes at either of our clubs, with theme days, family buffets and dinner specials at both clubs. If I can assist you at all, don’t hesitate to call or stop by my office. ~Rich Wolkiewicz “The Country Clubs of Chesterfield” Meadowbrook and Chesdin welcomes these new members! Diana-mcc@comcast.net NEW members – Refer a friend who signs up in your first 30 days of membership and we’ll credit you the amount of your referral’s dues on your November billing! 2 September is the best month of the year for tennis! Lower humidity, lower temperatures and courts at Meadowbrook are beautifully groomed! The Ladies Suburban League begins on Wednesday, September 11 in the mornings, but the courts are available all other times. For a fun morning on Labor Day, call Karolyn Soyars (275-8430) for fun, mixed play. Worried about your skill level? Do not … just bring a racquet and an attitude for fun and social play! Each Friday, we will also have casual tennis in the mornings … guys and girls. Just let Karolyn know of your availability. We will also have some Saturday Round Robin play. ~Karolyn Soyars RAMS ~Karolyn Soyars September is the harbinger of the coming of fall, and it also marks one of the busiest months for RAMS activities. A number of our RAMS and RAMETTES are heading south for the September Pinehurst trip, and we anxiously await all the juicy stories they will have for us upon their return. We recently completed the Pink Ribbon Tournament, but the RAMS and the ladies will be getting together again on September 10 when we play a combined event with the MWGA and again on October 3 with the RAMS Fall Tournament. We hope to have a great turn out for all of these events; so get signed up in the golf shop as soon as possible. As we fade into October, we also have the Jim Malone RAMS Championship scheduled for the 17th of October, so keep that date open on your fall schedule. We will follow that on October 23 with our fall dinner meeting, which also serves as our awards banquet. And, coming in early November, is our return match against those “false handicappers” from Jefferson-Lakeside to be played at Meadowbrook. With all these golf events on the horizon, it is time to get your game in to top shape. We hope to see all of you at these events. ~Jim Hufschmitt Calling all Meadowbrook and Chesdin Members! Please contact me by phone, 804-678-9510 or email at rcullison@liberty.edu I had been a member of different fitness centers over the past 20 years, but never seemed to reach my goals. I had gradually gained weight as my metabolism has slowed down, also I would gradually get out of the habit of going to the gym. So I made an appointment to meet with Bob. He put me on a healthy eating and exercise program that would help me reach my goal and I could actually do. I couldn't do much at the beginning, but my trainer's words of advice and encouragement made me determined to stick with it. This time is different; the results are worth my effort! I am losing weight, and am stronger and can even do cardio like never before! My clothes fit great and I am a happy lady! When I say I can't, he says "you can"! I am never bored because each time is different. Working out with a trainer is different than on your own because you don't want to let them or yourself down. I am so glad I did this. Do yourself a favor- hire Bob and Co. and get true professionals. They get results! Did I mention they make me laugh....? ~Joy Jones 5 The next BIZ Builders Forum will be at Meadowbrook Country Club in the Meadowbrook Room, September 11, 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. We know hosting a high school team, making your club available for matches, holding tournaments such the Central Region Girls Qualifier, The Chesdin Invitational, The Meadowbrook Challenge, and serving as the host site for next month’s VHSL State 5A/6A Championships come at a cost. We do hope that the reward we bring in showcasing the young talent at you facility balances the ledger. Again, we thank you for your willingness to be a home for junior golf in the Richmond area, and we hope that we can continue to have a relationship with your outstanding Club. ~John Hall 6 MCC GOLF NEWS DATES TO REMEMBER IN SEPTEMBER Monday Tuesday Thursday Saturday Sunday Wednesday Thursday Saturday Wednesday September 2 September 3 September 12 September 14 September 15 September 18 September 19 September 21 September 25 LABOR DAY – Holiday Tee Times Required GREENS AERATED Richmond 3-Score EASY DAY EVENT TOUGH DAY EVENT CMN Golf Outing St. Stephens Golf Outing Couples Member/Guest Meadowbrook High School Alumni Event Reserve your tee August 28th. 8:30 A.M. MCC Golfer’s FAVORITE hole revealed! For many years, I have always told everyone that my favorite golf hole at MCC was #18, so I have been curious to find out which hole is the “favorite” among MCC golfers. When I began the process and asked others the most common response was “Wow, I’ve never really thought about it.” Yet, almost immediately they revealed their choice. To get a good representation, I asked certain members of various golf groups to ask their players. I received approximately 110 responses. The following is a recap of the results. Only two picked #7, which is our number one handicap hole, and Bobby Wadkins and Dean Evans (both professionals) cast that vote. The holes with the fewest votes were, #3, #7, #11, #14 and surprisingly, #13. Hole #6 came in 4th place with 10% of the vote. Hole #18 came in 3rd place with 14% of the vote. And the “favorite” holes …. Two holes, # 9 and #17 (both par 3’s) came in 1st with 17% of the votes So the three most favorite holes; the last hole on the front nine and the last two holes on the back nine – Awesome! Thanks to everyone for their participation and especially to the group leaders for their help – D. Thompson’s, B. Putnam’s, Smith Collins, Smiley’s Ladies Group, Sunday Grill Group and the Thursday Tallywacker Group. I apologize to those who were not included, but I feel we have a good idea of which holes are the “favorites” at Meadowbrook. ~Dick Carrada Do you know all the members at Meadowbrook and Chesdin? Who are these adorable boys? 14 “I told my parents when I was in junior high that I was going to be a professional photographer. They sort of nixed that idea. They knew what I didn’t (know) at that point; that only about the very best 1% can really make a living at it.” Chip is presently volunteering his skills as a photographer assisting the Club with its newsletter and the development of the new website. You will soon be witnessing some of his breathtaking shots of our facilities and the many activities that make Meadowbrook-Chesdin a special place. “Sixty-five years ago, my mother purchased a darkroom kit as a gift for my dad. He didn’t find much use in it, but I was immediately hooked!” ~Chesdin Member, Chip Scavone Scavone grew up in the shadows of Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium. He studied at Baltimore Polytechnic High School, where he was also the yearbook editor. “I still have every one of those old prints”, offered Scavone. Chip stayed home to attend Johns Hopkins, where he completed his degree in engineering in just three years. A summer job with DuPont led to full time employment that eventually brought Chip to Richmond. 2013 has been a homecoming year for Scavone. A long time member of Meadowbrook, Chip moved to Chesdin with his wife Betty-Moore and joined membership there. With the formation of Meadowbrook-Chesdin, he has found himself back in the neighborhood where he had spent most of his adult life. Many members remember the Scavone’s home on Monza, shared by his late wife Nancy and children Michelle and Jamie. Nancy passed away in 1994. Meadowbrook-Chesdin is both proud and blessed to have Chip and Betty-Moore as members. He has enjoyed getting back on the golf course with his old buddies, playing regularly in the Soyars group. “I find the Meadowbrook course to be better suited to my game at this point in my life.” When you see Chip around the Club with his Sony Alpha 77 camera, make sure you introduce yourself….and SMILE ! ~John Hall Fast forward five years. Christian has worked his way up to Executive Chef at the Chesdin clubhouse, where he manages the entire kitchen operation, from purchasing supplies and menu planning to food preparation. He leads a staff of four who assist him in preparing mouth watering specialties that club members come back to enjoy week after week. Club de Vin de MCC Xxxxxx “Two dishes have become very popular since we opened the dining room,” Christian said. “The Black and Bleu Salad, which is topped with blackened chicken breast. It’s pan seared and topped with blue cheese, bacon and tomatoes.” He says flatbread pizza is another favorite. If you haven’t tried the new menu at Chesdin, you’ll want to come by soon. Chef Hastings says that the dining experience at Chesdin is nothing like Meadowbrook. “I like to say that we have something for everyone at our restaurant.” He said the menu is very family (kid) friendly, too. . So, what does the Chef recommend? “For your first visit, you’ll want to try the Crab Cakes or the Beef Tips. If you come for lunch, try the Turkey Grill,” he said. ~Executive Chef, Christian Hastings Meadowbrook-Chesdin Country Club The best night for families is Friday Night, when a family can enjoy a buffet that includes two entrees, sides, salads and desserts for only $13.95 per person. There’s even a Kid-Friendly table with foods to satisfy any kid’s palette. Kids eat for $4.95. Thursday Nights he serves dinner specials for under $10. “My first job was working as a dishwasher at Meadowbrook Country Club when I was a sophomore in high school.” Christian says he never even thought about a career in food service before that. ~Diana Le’Gere 15 Farewell to SUMMER The summer of 2013 has been unusual to say the least. That’s about 40 unusual summers in a row for Virginia! The unusual amount of rainfall through the spring and early summer kept Lake Chesdin full, which is a good thing. It also caused some problems with the roots on greens, which wasn’t so good. When the spell of hot weather did arrive in July, some greens became stressed from lack of air in the root zone. Fortunately, the weather in August was unusually mild and most of the turf recovered quickly. We are looking forward to a great fall with excellent playing conditions, unless something unusual happens. We are scheduled to aerify the greens on September 16th and 17th using the smaller (3/8 inch) tines. The turf is usually playable immediately and back in great shape in about 10 days. Come on out and enjoy the fantastic fall weather! If you have any questions about any maintenance practices, please contact me at dickfisher0105@verizon.net, or at 920-3782. ~ Dick Fisher Chesdin Green Superintendent Women of Meadowbrook Country Club As September sings the most beautiful song of a festive season, the Women of Meadowbrook begin our 2013-2014 session with a special invitation from our newly elected President. As the Meadowbrook Women's Club begins its 48th year, I would like to invite all Meadowbrook and Chesdin women to join our organization. Two meetings a month are available at 10:00 A.M. (social) 10:30 A.M. (general meeting) on the 1st Wednesday of the month and 6:30 P.M. on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Members may attend one or both meetings. Fellowship and interesting programs along with good food are on the agenda for the year. We support several families with the Chesterfield County Christmas Mother program, decorate the club at Christmas and work in many ways to provide improvements to our clubhouse and the gardens. Not sure if you want to join, come as our guest and check us out. We look forward to seeing you at our first meeting. Our first meeting of the year will be Wednesday, September 4, 2013 with a garden theme in the Terrace Room. After our business session, complimentary wine will be served and everyone will be able to enjoy the patio and gardens with a social time. We will be entertained again with the easy listening music of Ramona Charity. It will be a great opportunity to catch up on everyone's activities over the summer and perhaps to meet some new friends. Come one, come all and join us as we kick off a great new club year. Remember to wear your favorite hat in remembrance of Peg Ragland and Shirley Kirk. Lunch will consist of: Summer Salad w/grilled chicken, Strawberries, Goat cheese, Glazed Walnuts and Raspberry Vinaigrette Dressing, Hot rolls & Butter, and sherbet for dessert.
