Page 10 Event Calendars 1 Visit Meadowbrook’s Historic Gillette Garden The Gillette Garden was still a center of activity this winter as our wonderful partnership with the Chesterfield Technical Center expanded to include the second year Carpentry students. Approximately 12 students under the guidance of Mr. Dale Wilson, Trade and Industrial Instructor, recreated a portion of the original garden arbor. The massive original arbor extended throughout the garden even circling the swimming pool which was located on the upper level of the rear gardens. Students used the old photos to copy the intricate beam curves and dimensions so they could closely replicate the original construction. Due to pre-planning during classroom time, once on-site they gained efficiency by working in crews, such as cutting materials, digging, framing, etc. During the actual on-site visits, in addition to construction techniques, instruction was on-going in safety, math, proper tool usage, teamwork, critical thinking, and other job skills. The student crew was on-site approximately 2.5 hours each visit and completed the arbor on March 14 after only 4 workdays -- an amazing turnaround time. Our hardhats are off in salute to their skills, efficiency and hard work! See page 7 for a picture of the finished Arbor. The arbor will be dedicated to Jo Arbuckle, a former Women’s Club member who was the driving force many years ago behind saving the gardens. Funding was provided by donations to the Gillette Gardens at Meadowbrook, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. He also worked as a Chef for 10 years at the Washington Court Hotel in D.C., which is located across the street from the White House. His celebrity “A” list of diners includes the discriminating palettes of two former Presidents, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, and also, singer Aretha Franklin, among many others. Tunstille’s culinary claim to fame in the restaurant arena includes a successful tenure at the award winning Midlothian restaurant, Pescados, which received accolades throughout the Richmond area after earning six awards including, “Best Seafood Restaurant in Central Virginia” from Virginia Living Magazine and “Best Seafood Restaurant in Richmond” from Style Weekly. Tunstille also assisted with the opening of Lulu’s in Shockoe Bottom. Tunstille’s signature dishes include many fresh seafood items, such as Moroccan BBQ Salmon, and plenty of “secret sauces” and homemade dressings. He says the new Chesdin menu will integrate the “fresh food concept”, which uses only fresh, high quality ingredients, cooked in small batches, making for an exceptional dining experience. His son, Tunstille Clarence Smith, II, formally trained in culinary arts. will also join the Chesdin staff as the new Sous Chef. Krissy Davis Bar Manager, Chesdin Clubhouse Krissy comes to us with more than 14 years experience in Food & Beverage. For the last five years, she worked as the F&B Manager at Big Dogs Restaurant & Bar in Crew, Virginia. In addition, she still works in a part-time gig as the “right hand” to Joe DeFazio (DeFazio’s Catering in Richmond), Krissy learned the “ins and outs” of the catering business and brings to the table expertise in event planning for private and company events, weddings and other social activities, both intimate and upscale. Gifted with a flair for baking, she continues to keep her hand in the catering industry and bakes custom cakes for birthdays, showers and other private events. When not at work, she’s at home in Crewe, Virginia where she enjoys family time on the ball field with her 11-year old daughter, Emily and her 8-year old son, Andy. She and her children are zealous karaoke enthusiasts; not surprising considering Krissy previously worked as a professional singer with “Premonition”, a southern rock band. Chesdin members are in for a treat as Krissy plans to “rock out” some yummy signature beverages and cocktails. The essence of Piranha swimming goes far beyond what happens between the lanes. Piranha swimming is about having fun, socializing with your friends on the pool deck, and challenging yourself to improve your lap times. Our families become lifelong friends, our swimmers excel and have a blast doing it and our club is well represented with a team first approach. In 2013, our team took home the Division D trophy at the Chesterfield Aquatic League th Champs. It was the 6 title in the last 7 years. Our swimmers hold 7 league records and have won several CAL scholarships. Some of the keys to the Piranha’s are its participation and the ability to always have the most improved times when it matters. When most teams consider 50% attendance a great turnout, your Piranhas bring almost 100% each and every year. This is our secret to success. By making sure the athletes have fun and want to compete, guarantees that their times will drop by year’s end. The 2014 season is shaping up to be an exciting one. We are excited about having Coach Morgan back and look 6 forward to watching all of the younger kids return this summer to improve on their successful 2013 season. Remember all kids, up to 18, are eligible for the swim team. Grandchildren are welcomed too!!!! Swim team sign-ups are April 23!
