North Carolina's goal all week was to break the streak. South Carolina had won three in a row coming into Saturday's 79th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, and six of the last eight. The Tarheels accomplished what they set out to do, scoring 28 points in the first quarter and never looking back to take a 54-39 win against the Sandlappers at Gibbs Stadium. The combined 93 points set a Shrine Bowl record. The previous high was 80 in South Carolina's 66-14 win in 2000. The Sandlappers lead the overall series 44-31-4. North Carolina quarterback Austin Kendall (10) fires a pass in front of South Carolina's Trae'von Hinton during the 79th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Tarheels defeated the Sandlappers 54-39 in the highest scoring game in the event's history. Photo by JOHN BYRUM/ john.byrum@shj.com "I woke up this morning in the hotel lobby and got the paper and the headlines read that South Carolina was going for four in a row," North Carolina coach John Kirby (Eastern Alamance) said. "It just makes you, like, 'Wow. Has it been that long?' I can't say enough about our team. They worked extremely hard all week. South Carolina did too. People like to come out and watch a game where a whole lot of defense isn't being played. They got their wish today." The Tarheels took a 7-0 lead just 1:39 into the game as Freedom running back B.J. Emmons, an Alabama commitment, scored on a 15-yard run. They increased it to 14-0 on their next possession as Cuthbertson's Austin Kendall, an Oklahoma commitment, connected with Rose's Cornell Powell See Tarheels on page 2 (Clemson) on a 27-yard pass with 7:15 left in the quarter. South Carolina got on the board at the 4:19 mark in the first quarter as Dorman quarterback Collin Hill (Colorado State) connected with Byrnes' Chavis Dawkins on a 25-yard pass to make it 14-6. The extra point was blocked. Following the touchdown, Powell swung the momentum back in the Tarheels' favor with a 98-yard kickoff return to make it 21-6. He finished with four catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. "I feel like we accomplished something," Powell said. "I'm proud to be from North Carolina. It's bittersweet that this is my last high school football game, but I ended it the right way with the win. I'm glad for my hometown and my city." South Carolina pulled within 21-12 as Spartanburg quarterback Austin Scott, the state's Gatorade Player of the Year, found Lower Richland's Larry Collins on an 11-yard strike. The 2-point conversion failed. North Carolina capped the scoring in the first quarter as A.C. Reynolds running back Rico Dowdle ran it in from 15-yards out for a 28-12 lead. "I think we came out and kind of set the tone," Kirby said. "Everything was clicking. There was a hiccup there one time where it got back into a slower rhythm of the game. Football is so funny. It's about momentum and rhythm. We had it, then they had it. It's just a great day for me. A great day for North Carolina. I'm excited for these kids." North Carolina led 35-12 early in the second quarter after Kendall found Mount Tabor's Divine Deablo on a 24-yard touchdown pass. The Sandlappers then struck twice, with Hill connecting again with Dawkins on a 5-yard TD pass, followed by a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown by Emerald's K.J. Chamberlain. The Tarheels scored twice in the third quarter as New Bern's Tyric McCarter had a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Kendall ran it in from 1 yard out. Hill threw his third touchdown pass of the game on a 22-yard strike to Belton-Honea Path's Evan Vaughn. Hill was named South Carolina's offensive most valuable player finishing 15-of-28 for 192 yards. "This week has been a lot of fun," Hill said. "It's obviously not the outcome we wanted, but it was fun getting to know these guys. They scored really quick on a four-play drive, but then I thought the defense was going to figure it out. A little bit in the first quarter I knew it was going to be a shootout. But it was fun because as a quarterback you would rather it be a shootout than a dogfight." Spartanburg running back Tavien Feaster, the state's Mr. Football and a Clemson commitment, scored on a 3-yard run to get the Sandlappers within 48-39 with 7 minutes remaining. But Kendall put the game away with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Dowdle with 2:26 to go. Kendall was named North Carolina's offensive most valuable player, finishing 14-of-17 for 203 yards and three touchdowns. "It feels awesome," Kendall said. "Coach has been talking about breaking the streak all week, and we were able to do that." "Coach has been talking about breaking the streak all week, and we were able to do that." Crest linebacker Aaron Ramseur was awarded the Tarheels' defensive MVP, while Richland Northeast linebacker T.J. Brunson won it for the Sandlappers. "(The 28 points) was the tale of the tale," South Carolina coach Wayne Green (Berea) said. "The turnover when we had it first and goal inside the 5-yard line really hurt. We had a few too many mistakes in the kicking game to win a game like this. I was extremely proud of the way our guys didn't quit. They kept battling." A check in the amount of Sudan Divan with North Carolina Grand Master with the check that was presented to the Imperial Potentate at halftime. $2,567,920.15 was presented to the Shriner's Hospital at halftime.
