Additionally, we have been pleased to award 9 individuals the Chairman’s Club ring for bringing in donations of least $7000. This ring and the other rings in the lower levels can only be earned through our incentive program. If you have not signed up to participate, please send your request to Kevin Hall at hallkevinc@gmail.com. The Shrine Bowl Hall of Fame was created in 2005 to recognize outstanding service to the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas without whose support this game would not be played. Dr. Greg Pleasants: Dr. Greg Pleasants made his inaugural appearance as a student assistant for the NC team in the early 80's and made a tremendous impression on the team medical/ trainer staff that year. At NC State, he served as a student athletic trainer and followed that up by going to medical school where he received his MD. When the Shrine Bowl medical director indicated his intent to step down as the medical director of the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in 2001, Dr. Pleasants was actively sought out as his replacement. He responded without hesitation that it would be an honor to serve in that capacity. At that time the game was being played in Rock Hill and since moving farther west to Spartanburg he has continued serving in this capacity through today. His experience as an athletic trainer at Garner High School and NC State gave him tremendous insight as to what ATC's are capable of, but it was always more than a little reassuring to have him watching the Shrine Bowl medical/trainer staff and making sure they did the right things for the athletes. His previous experience as a student in the Shrine Bowl made the transition very smooth and easy on everyone. He always makes not only the health care of the athletes a priority, but also goes to great lengths to protect the Shriners from legal issues arising from their acceptance to play or from injuries received at the game. He is extremely thorough throughout the week from pregame evaluations of players, to players injured at practices, players injured in the game, and the post-game evaluation of players following the game. He was undoubtedly a God-send to the athletic trainers and the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. He maintains his own medical practice in Garner, NC. Mike Guerrero Mike Guererro is currently the athletic trainer at Garner High School. He first appeared on the Shrine Bowl roster in the early 80's as a student athletic trainer for the NC Squad. Mike attended NC State for his undergraduate degree and later attended East Carolina University where he received his Master's. He began his teaching career at Garner High School and has been there ever since. He returned to the Shrine Bowl game as the invited adult trainer for the NC Squad some years later and again did a superb job with his group of athletes. See HALL OF FAME on page 9 THE GOALPOST A Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas Publication Page 9 Hall of Fame In 2004, he was selected as the chairman of the Shrine Bowl trainer staff and has worked diligently in this capacity. He collects all the medical forms and goes over them before arriving in Spartanburg for the game. He knows as much about each player as its possible to know before they even show up for the game. He has done a much better job of providing for the player’s needs. He has worked with Shrine Bowl Medical Director, Dr. Greg Pleasants, at Garner High School for many years and the working relationship they have at Garner has only made their efforts with Shrine Bowl players that much more effective. Mike heads up the selection committee for the Shrine Bowl student trainers from North Carolina. Illustrious Sir Jimmy Smith, PP Jimmy Smith is the Past Potentate of Hejaz Shrine Center, Mauldin, SC and has served the Shrine Bowl for over 8 years. qualification being affiliated with the SBOC. Jimmy proudly served on the Board of Governors for 5 years. He has served as the Shrine Bowl parade chairman since 2007, and has worked diligently to make the parade better and better each year. Since 2013, the parade has actually produced a profit. The parade committee is self-supportive, files proper permits, arranges with local police, and is promoted throughout the year. Illustrious Sir Jimmy can be found many days selling floats, or soliciting shrine units to participate in the shrine bowl parade. He takes every opportunity to represent the Shrine Bowl in every capacity. In addition he has raised over $54,000 in 2013 & 2014 to date and is always looking for more !
