April Emphasis: Outreach and Welcome
Jesus said, “You are witnesses of these things.”
In the Gospel we meet the Church’s great task: to proclaim the
crucified and risen Christ. This most basic of Christian actions
is at the core of all our ministries of invitation and evangelism.
All that we do and say, every ministry of worship, learning,
community and service, are dedicated to this central task – that
all may know and share Christ’s resurrection love!
This Spring we will welcome a number of new partners in
ministry. We invite you to join us in Christ’s mission of love in
daily life, and meet Him “in the breaking of the Bread.” More
than 300 new members have joined our community in the past
several years, as we baptize and grow in the promise and
calling of God.
We urge every one of our members and friends to rededicate
ourselves to the work of invitation and outreach, to welcome
friends and neighbors, no matter where they come from or what
they need, to discover the gift of grace in the face of Christ,
through baptism and discipleship. May God bless and empower

gatherings. . If you would like information about membership and ministry partnership at FLCS,

BECOMING A MEMBER AT FLCS: Becoming a ministry partner here at First is as simple as
affirming our baptism into Christ and our desire to follow our Lord in faith and service. Contact the
church office or speak to the pastors for more information. The next group of new members will be
received during May, and the next set of new member gatherings will be announced soon.
COMPANIONS E-LETTER: Each Thursday well over 400 households receive our electronic
newsletter. Companions provides a weekend worship and activities calendar, reflections on the
coming week’s lessons and themes, news notes on upcoming events, links to our flchurch.org
website, and so much more. To receive Companions each week, print your e-mail address on the
offering envelope or welcome card, and write “Companions.” We’ll handle the rest!
PERSONAL INVITATION: Studies show that there simply is no substitute for the power of a personal
invitation when it comes to helping people discover (or recover) a living and vital faith. So it’s really up
to each of us to reach out and invite others to experience the joy of following Christ, and introduce
others to the beating heart of our faith. Here’s how you might respond to this calling to reach out:
1) Think about persons in your life who need the grace and love of Christ in a deeper way;
2) Pray fervently for God to open doors and windows for them to encounter that love;
3) Invite them – whether to a service of worship, or to a choir concert or other event.
4) Accompany them – no one likes to feel alone, and your presence will be a blessing and strength.
Your personal outreach makes an enormous difference in helping people really feel welcome!
BAPTISM IS FOR EVERYONE! Children and adults are welcome to full participation in
the Christian faith through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Call or email Pastor Hurst to

“walk wet” in God’s loving promises. Note: Baptisms can be arranged at any of our
three weekend services, and these Spring months are a great time for baptisms!

WE WELCOME CHILDREN! Baby changing stations are available in both restrooms. Children’s
Bulletins are available at the sanctuary entrances. There is childcare for all children 0-5 years in
the nursery across the courtyard. A Bible story is always shared.
HEARING ASSISTANCE DEVICES are available from an usher for those who may have difficulty
hearing the worship service. LARGE PRINT MATERIALS are available as well.
WORSHIP SERVICE AVAILABLE ON CD. Please place your CD request at the sound booth or call
the church office (310) 320-9920, extension 101. The CDs may be picked up 10 minutes after the
service or the following Sunday at the sound booth. Suggested donation is $2.00 per CD.

Celebrating Freedom
Parents tell us that it is important to them that their children receive a Christian education, and this
priority is one of the top reasons they choose to send their children to First Lutheran. Students at
First Lutheran benefit from something they cannot get in public school elementary and middle
schools: lessons on the Bible, religion and moral character as part of the regular curriculum in all
grade levels, taught in an environment that is guided by and promotes the understanding of Christian
principles.
This freedom is particularly evident during the weeks leading up to Easter. In First Lutheran
classrooms at all levels, students explore the persecution, crucifixion, death and ultimate resurrection
of Jesus Christ in age-appropriate lessons and activities. Some examples:
• In first grade, the story of Jesus’ resurrection is brought to life with “empty tombs” made from
biscuits and marshmallows.
• In fourth grade, students put small items in plastic “resurrection eggs” that when opened over
the days of Holy Week tell the Easter story.
• In sixth grade, students pay special attention to Jesus’ teachings and ministries.
These activities not only give meaning to the Easter celebration, but also deepen students’
understanding of moral concepts such as sacrifice, forgiveness and unconditional love.
So this Easter, as we appreciate the sacrifice made for all of us, we also celebrate the
freedom to share these lessons with our young people so that they may grow in their understanding
and faith.

Sunday Mornings at 9:30am: THE EASTER TEXTS IN THE YEAR OF MATTHEW
Join us in the Fireside Room each Sunday as we consider the great texts of the Easter
Season. Each week a great text from the Gospels will be studied and considered.
•
Wednesday Studies:
+ 5:30pm –“STATIONS OF THE RESURRECTION” (beg. 4/30) -- Join Pastor Carson for a
four week review of the Easter texts in scripture, and their meaning for today.
+ 7:30pm – “THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS” (beg. 4/23) – Pastor Hurst leads this five week
book study of CS Lewis’ 1942 masterpiece of Christian ethics, imagining a series of
correspondences between Wormwood, an apprentice devil, and his mentor Screwtape.
Copies of the book are available in the FLCS Bookstore.
CRADLE ROLL reaches out to parents with children from birth to 3 years, with newsletters filled
with articles on developmental issues and helpful advice on how to talk about God with our young
children. Along with sending monthly mailings, we also have family events
throughout the year.
SPARK Sunday School is for children 3 years—5th grade at 10:30am. We
begin in the Library and the children return to their families in worship before
communion. Together, we study one great story of the Bible each month and
explore it through different learning style
CONFIRMATION ministry is for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. This
ministry prepares youth to say a grateful “yes” to the God who first claimed them in their baptism.
Youth prepare to Affirm their Baptism through Wednesday classes, Individual Projects, and an
intensive Retreat each year.
Lutheran CURSILLO of Southern California – First Lutheran has over thirty adults who have
attended a Cursillo weekend retreat and have come back filled with the Spirit to serve and grow in
their daily walk with Christ. YOU are invited to attend a Cursillo weekend this February.
Vacation Bible School will be held June 23-27, 2014 with the theme “Workshop of Wonders:
Imagine and Build with God”. If you are interested in being a part of our leadership or volunteer

LOCAL FOOD PANTRY: First Lutheran does not have an on-campus food pantry. Instead, we
partner with Stillman Sawyer Family Services Center (formerly known as His House) to provide food
and other assistance to those in need. At this time of year, they begin to run low on food. The
donations received from holiday food drives have been given out. They serve the housed and the
homeless, older adults and families with small children. This means a variety of foods and package
sizes are useful.
Here are some suggestions: canned food, especially soups, canned meats (beef stew, Spam,
chicken, ham), canned seafood (tuna, salmon, sardines), canned foods with pop-tops (Vienna
sausages, meats, soups, vegetables, and main dishes), canned vegetables, canned fruit, dry items
(rice, pasta, beans, cereal). Can openers are helpful. Hygiene items are also welcomed. These can
include sample sizes as well as larger sizes. Also, keep those plastic, paper, and re-useable bags
coming. Thanks for your help caring for hungry neighbors.
FEINSTEIN FOUNDATION CHALLENGE: One way First Lutheran and First Serve help hungry
people in our community is the program known as Monday Night Meals (or MNM). Donations to
MNM during March and April will help the program obtain support from the Feinstein Foundation.
Each year, the Feinstein Foundation donates $1 million to help organizations feed the hungry. The
Foundation divides the money in proportion to the amount raised by each of the participating
agencies. Donations may be made to either First Lutheran Church or First Serve.
Please indicate that the donation is for MNM. Thank you for your support of this program. If you
would like more information about helping cook, serve, or drive on a Monday, you may check the
appropriate box on the March “Send Me” Alert. Substitutes are sometimes needed, as well as regular
volunteers.
EMERGENCY PREP: Spring is here. Remember to check the batteries in your smoke alarms and
your carbon monoxide alarms. Go through your emergency supplies to check for expiration dates.
Use or donate items that are due to expire soon. Replace or dump items that should not be used. Be
cautious with stored water. The water may be fine, but if the water bottle expires dramatically, you
will lose both the water and other items in the container.
DEVOTIONAL GUIDES: Copies of the April through June issue of Christ in Our Home are available
in the church office and at the entrance to the sanctuary. For each day, this guide has a Bible
passage to read, and a brief article commenting on the passage. Lutheran Social Services has
requested devotional guides, religious magazines, and Bibles. Back issues of devotional guides and
magazines are welcomed. There is a box in the church office for these donations.
OTHER THINGS TO SHARE: There are 2 more containers for donations under
the mailboxes in the church office. Each container is labeled. The smallest box is
for eyeglasses, sunglasses, and cases. Hearing aid batteries and used hearing
aids may also be placed in that container. The glasses are given to the Lions
Club. The hearing related supplies go to a foundation that refurbishes them.
Grocery coupons from the newspaper are given to a local organization that sends
the coupons to the military. Coupons are accepted at stores on base, even after
the expiration date. The coupons have a separate container in the office.

This week First Lutheran Church and School makes a HUGE leap into the 21
century in terms of how we meet the needs of our congregation and school
population with two big announcements.
1) We have purchased two new iPads that will be the cornerstone of our new GIVING STATION in
the narthex. This will help visitors and members by making the giving experience at First Lutheran
simple and instantaneous. Congregants can make donations online before leaving church in the
form of a one-time gift or a recurring gift by using a credit card or debit card. Not only will these be
used for gifts to the church, but they will also now allow you to purchase tickets to events like Taste
of the Town and Broadway at First, and others, with your CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD! We hope to
also make it available to make donations to group fundraising efforts like car washes and bake
sales, and even to pay for purchases at the Navajo Yard Sale or for your basket at the Basket Social
or Taste of the Town. You can also create an account so that your credit card information is stored
securely online, and then you won’t even need to have your credit card on hand for future purchases
because the information will already be there at your fingertips. The possibilities are endless and we
are very excited to provide this new service.

BOOK CLUB UPDATE: The reading group has selected a classic for its April 21
meeting: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. The group meets
3rd Monday of every month in the campus library at 7 p.m. New and occasional
members are encouraged to join in the discussions. One of the most important works of
twentieth-century American literature, Hurston’s beloved 1937 classic is an enduring
Southern love story sparkling with wit, beauty, and heartfelt wisdom. Told in the
captivating voice of a woman who refuses to live in sorrow, bitterness, fear, or foolish
romantic dreams, it is the story of fair-skinned, fiercely independent Janie Crawford, and her evolving
selfhood through three marriages and a life marked by poverty, trials, and purpose. Upcoming
selections: May 19- Defending Jacob by William Landay; June 16 - Orphan Train by Christina

HOOKS AND NEEDLES: Meets Saturdays from 10:00 am - noon. We use many types of creative
stitches: crochet, knit, cross-stitch, needle point, crewel, embroidery, etc. Our mission is to make
useful items such as prayer shawls, hats for the mariners, baby blankets, and other gifts of love for
others and personal use. Bring your hooks, needles, and love of creation to join us as we work on our
projects and enjoy Christian fellowship.
SCRAPBOOKING: Come join us for our monthly Super Saturday Scrapbooking Workshops. Feel

"FIRST FRIENDS" is a fellowship group for special-needs adults. Sponsored by FirstServe, "First
Friends" is a social time of games, crafts, dinner and worship. Sister Laura coordinates this group,
with the help of Pastor Carson and volunteers. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, April 30, at 5:30
in the Library! Contact the church office or FirstServe’s Executive Director, Pastor Hurst, if you're
interested in helping with this small group.
PRIME TIMERS: The next Prime Timers lunch will be Wednesday, May 7,
2014. Lunch will start about 11:30 am in Fellowship Hall. The speaker will tell us
about "Durable Medical Equipment and Supplies." Suggested lunch donation is
