Holiday Party
The ” 2007” Kona Sailing Club activities and events brought us all lots
of good times, laughs, smiles, good food, and best of all, some of the
best “Genoa Sailing Conditions in the Pacific.” From February’s
SledgeHammer, the Spring Series, the notorious Kawaihae Regatta,
Fall Series, Wahine Regatta, right up to the “not yet sailed” but popular Poker Run (postponed), and all the sailing in-between…. It has
been another marvelous year of sailing and friendship along the
Kona Coast.
And the Prospects for 2008 look even better…….. with the largest
ballot ever for 2008 KSC Board of Directors elections!!!
It is a pleasure for me to be a part of this fine Sailing Organization
and I am sincerely looking forward to the future…………
A Man of the Sea Passes....
Some of our older members of the club may know of
Associate member Capt. Bill Ross. He was a Columbia River
Pilot for decades and the brother of Capt. Jack Ross a well
known long-time charter fisherman in Kona. Capt. William
Ross donated a sailboat to the club to be used for training
Boy Scouts in the summer. A catalina 22' as I recall. We maintained it for over a year and then decided to sell it when no
one wanted to use or maintain it. I think she changed names
and is still around. The $4000 we got for her went into the
building fund and helped get our re-building project started.
The club gave Capt. Ross a life-time membership that we
may now retire. He was a good man and a solid seaman.

A great Mahalo Nui Loa from Vice-Commodore Mike Souther
and the Board to outgoing Board members Myrna Green, Skip
Brown, and Bob Cowell who are retiring from the Board after
many years of dedicated and inspired volunteer service. Myrna
was the club Secretary, Skip has been keeping the grounds in
ship-shape, and Bob served as Rear Commodore. Thank you for
the great service to the Club, and as always, we look forward to
seeing your smiling faces around here and on the water.

With
so many women attending the event who were new to the sport of sailing, this year the ladies tried
something a little different. Alicia decided Instead of actual races using the Portsnmouth rating system, the
women would go out and work on sailing skill exercises instead. Rather than 1st, 2nd and 3rd Places, all teams
were awarded a 1st Place in the skill in which their boat showed the most potential. Everyone was a Winner!
Mahalo to Daniel Starsong for serving as Committee/Safety boat and to Jim Butterworth and Joe DuBose for
lending theirs boats to use for the day. Below are the teams and their ”Special Recognition” award. Who
knows what will be up for the 2008 Wahine Day, but Its sure to be another fun day with Wahines on the Water!

RE-SCHEDULED
The Sailing Poker Run Race will be re-scheduled for
some time in the spring 2008. What with his new baby
girl, Gary Souther has been a busy boy and unable to
arrange all that is needed for a successful event. We’ll
help Gary out when the time comes and look forward
to the true return of the ever exciting, always unpredictable ”KSC Poker Run”.

THE WINNERS ARE REVEALED
Our man Skip reports that the weekend trash can
over-flow problem seems to have abated, but he
urges everyone to dump their personal trash in the
dumpsters and please empty the club can(s) if you
see that they’re full.
