County Register of Wills, Lauren Parker, citing the many years of volunteer services provided to the citizens of the State of Maryland. Congratulations on a job well done! The Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company lost a great leader on April 2, 2013 as Past Chief Jim Mekins Sr. passed away in his sleep on this day. Jim will always be remembered as “one who led by example.” He would never ask you to do anything he had not done himself. Jim was awarded the LSVFC’s Life Achievement Award last Wednesday evening honoring his 41 years in the fire service. Jim retired as a Chief Technical Inspector for Mass Transit, served with the American Red Cross Disaster team, was a Reserve Police Officer for A.A.County and umpired Lake Shore Little League during his lifetime. Jim was a member of Anchor Baptist Church and a past member of the Glen Burnie VFC. He was inducted into the AACVFA Hall of Fame in 1998. AACVFA ANNUAL BULL & OYSTER ROAST WAS A GREAT SUCCESS! As you can see from the pictures, everyone had a great time and over $6,000 was raised for the Association! Next year, we could use more help with the event, as well as fire company participation in ticket sales. Quote of the Month: “Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” Compiled by Jane Huffman ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION Page 2 Who was Jesse Fisher? Each year the Jesse Fisher trophy is awarded to the fire company who has dedicated the most hours to fire, rescue or EMS- related training during the year. But who was this gentleman, Jesse Fisher? Jesse Fisher was a member of the Water Witch Hook and Ladder Company in Annapolis City from 1907-1962. He served as Assistant Fire Marshal and Chief Fire Marshal of the Annapolis Fire Department. He furnished the citizens of Annapolis with their first ambulance service and in December 1941 a fully paid U.S.Naval Academy Fire Department was established with Jesse Fisher becoming the first Fire Chief, leading 23 personnel. He was instrumental in establishing the Fire Service Extension at the University of Maryland, which ultimately became MFRI. In 1930, Jesse Fisher became the first President of the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen’s Association. Chief Fisher was a political man involved with the Annapolis City County Council and was a Past President of the MSFA in 1932. He was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1979. He was inducted into the AACVFA Hall of Fame in 1997. His life was devoted to the volunteer firemen of Annapolis City, Anne Arundel County, and the State of Maryland. As you can see from the bio of Chief Fisher, he was a wise man with great leadership qualities. I hope this has helped you to understand who Jesse Fisher was and how prestigious the Jesse Fisher Trophy really is.
