ST. LUCIE COUNTY FIRE DISTRICT Fire Line Winter, 2011 Knupp and Lentz named Employees of the Quarter MDA Boot Drive Kicks Off in February Next Fire Board Meeting: January 19 at 3 p.m. Citizen Fire Academy starts January 31 at 5:30 p.m. Lt. Deborah Knupp was named Firefighter of the Quarter and Scott Lentz named Employee of the Quarter by the Fire District. Both were honored at the December Fire Board Meeting. Lt. Knupp recently organized the completion of smoke detectors in 80 homes in the Spanish Lakes community in Port St. Lucie. “Lt. Knupp’s outstanding performance in Fire Prevention has allowed the District to maintain quality services while reducing staffing and funding. Her commitment to the organization and the community is apparent in her efforts both on and off duty,” said Fire Chief Ron Parrish. Knupp is also a key player in the Fire District’s Big Heart Brigade. Scott Lentz has been instrumental in overseeing the construction of Station #3 in Port St. Lucie as well as fire stations over the last several years. He managed work done, as part of a FEMA grant, to harden the fire stations and better prepare the buildings to withstand hurricane winds. Emerson Named Florida Fire Marshal of Year Quarterly Newsletter If you have anything you would like covered in any upcoming issues of either newsletters, contact Catherine Chaney, PIO at 621-3333. This past year continued to be a challenge because of the economy. State and local governments across the country have been forced to do more with less. The Fire District is financially positioned better than most local governments, but we need to have the economy turn around now or we will find ourselves is dire straits. We continued to cut and tighten everything we could. I want to thank all of you for your continued help and support to achieve a lean budget, without compromising on service. I am constantly amazed at all the challenges we face and overcome. This coming year brings the promise for a brighter future. The economy shows some signs of a slow recovery and there seems to be more optimism. Most people have come to the realization that slow growth is the “new normal.” My wish for the New Year is that the economy grows, but more importantly that people better realize the need for solid public safety services. They better understand the need for fire-rescue, law enforcement and emergency services. In order to achieve that, we each need to step out of our comfort zone and reach out to the public. We need to be champions for the Fire District. I challenge each of you to become more active in the community, through your church, your civic clubs, your sports activities. If we have 400+ individuals reaching out and better explaining the fire service, we will have a core of supporters in the general public. We need those supporters. I hope the each employee will work hard to strengthen the relationship they have with their peers, friends, families, Fire District, and the community. Sincerely, Chief Parrish Firefighters Giving Back Congratulations to Erin Boyajian who participated in the American Lung Association Fight for Air Climb in Ft. Lauderdale. She was part of a team of 20 climbers and 6 spectators who raised $3000 for Lung Cancer.
