Quality is the Product
of a Good Attitude
®
Telling you what’s exceptional about Spyderco Knives in a catalog is just
words, words, words. Don’t believe us. Believe our customers. People who
buy a Spyderco knife use it everyday, come to rely on it and almost always
buy another one. And maybe another one. And possibly one after that….
Here’s what they say:
“
“
I have the highest quality, most dependable
blade in my pocket ever made.
Andy from Arkansas
”
It’s been thirty years since we started making knives. The motivation galvanizing Spyderco is building functional high-quality and innovative cutting
tools. It mattered then, it matters very much to us now and we know it matters to our customers. We continue being
inspired to innovate, focus on reliability
and do our best to impress our customers.
Quality is the product of a good attitude
and reliable high-performance is more than
a catch phrase.
Our appreciation for your patronage.
I came across a motor vehicle accident while on duty. A young
man was trapped inside tugging wildly at his seatbelt in hysterics
trying to breathe. I simply opened my newly purchased Spyderco and cut the belt without much effort. The immediate relief
on his face as he took in air sold me for life.
“
“
Steve from Washington
Thanks for a superb product that has withstood
my clumsy fingers, lousy sharpening techniques
and 28 years of perfect service!
David from California
”
”
“
When you need a drill, you’re not really looking
for a drill. You’re looking to make a hole.
When you need a knife, you’re not looking for a knife, you’re
looking to separate something from something else.
- Sal Glesser, President of Spyderco
From someone working in construction, I have had
other knives and none are as indestructible, reliable and functional. I continue being a customer and supporter and promise
to make fun of anyone who would carry anything else.
“
The Spyderco Crew
” “
Humorous Sam from Maryland
As I near the half-way point of another rotation in
Iraq, I’m reminded day in and day out, from the most
demanding tasks outside the wire to opening that
package from home, your product is outstanding and your
dedication to your craft is evident.
”
”
The CLIPIT
I’m a fixed blade guy. I was promoted at work which
required cutting open cardboard boxes and nylon strapping
most of my day. I bought a CLIPIT as I found it inconvenient
wearing the fixed blade in an office and I don’t wear a belt. I
appreciate this knife more every time I use it. It’s comfortable
in my hand, easy to find, open and use. Clipped to my pocket
it’s become my third hand and I know where it is, always.

Many people didn’t discover Spyderco until the
release of our Delica and Endura models in the
early 1990s. Prior to that we made stainless steel
handled CLIPITS, but top-quality lightweight onehand-open folders that carried in a pocket with a clip
were animals that didn’t exist. With their launch, Enduras
and Delicas set an industry standard for high
performance, worry-free reliability, failsafe
materials and designs. In the 1990s they
filled a vacuum in the knife industry,
in 2010 they are still impressing.

My Endura has no buttons,
switches or other gadgetry to
fumble, snag clothing or get in
the way. It’s never failed me and
with an upcoming mobilization
to the Middle East I wanted a
knife that could be trusted to be
failure free and always cut.

The genetic winner in the race of ultra-high-carbon powdered
blade steels is ZDP-189. Its high-performance edge retention
makes it exotic and in high demand. Other knife companies
offer it on pricey high-end knives. We use it on our workingman’s folders, the Endura4 and Delica4, letting hard-users and
steel junkies alike experience and appreciate its edge holding
performance without breaking the bank.
Mother Nature invented camo. She discovered
things were concealed and rendered less noticeable
when their form was broken up with color and
patterns. Our foliage green knives feature injectionmolded handles that are an exact color match to
the foliage green used in the U.S. Army’s digicam
pattern. Its shade-shifting green/gray color steps out
of the foreground and melts into the background.

emerson opener
Hearty stainless-steel-handled Endura and
Delica have just enough weight and heft to
reassure you they’re clipped in your pocket
ready to roll. Chamfered handle scales
are comfortably pinch-free when tightly
gripped.
Knifemaker Ernest Emerson designed a blade
opening function called the Emerson Patented
Opening Feature. It’s a hook jutting out the
blade’s spine. It catches a pocket’s edge when
drawing the knife, opening the blade for
ready use. With appreciation, consent and
royalties to Mr. Emerson: Patent

“
My wife and daughter were swimming
in our backyard pool when the screaming
started. I ran outside to find the neighbor’s dog tried to leap over our iron pool
security fence and his thick canvas collar
hooked on a fence peg. I picked up the
dangling and fighting 50 lb. suffocating
dog but the collar was twisted so tightly
I couldn’t release or unsnap it from the
fence. I had only a couple minutes before
he was going to die. The Delica’s blade
slid under the collar and without effort
separated the collar in one swipe.

The Police Model became an instant classic when
it was released in the 1980’s and is still one of the
most popular and iconic Spydercos. Offering the
ideal balance of blade length, convenient carry and
superior performance, the Police Model continues
to serve with distinction.
Nylon rope thick as a garden hose is stretched
taut in front of you and you need to cut it
- now. Good to know there’s nothing
more appropriately engineered for
downward, pulling cuts than the
Hawkbill blade clipped in your
pocket. The tip’s curve holds
the rope (or whatever you’re
cutting—line, netting, poly
propylene) against the sharp
edge for failsafe, downward-motion cutting,
done at arms length.
C79BK Assist Black
C79OR Assist Orange
The resume of features on the Assist is
impressive: a Cobra Hood blade opener;
patented lift-and-pry blunt tip; emergency
whistle; retractable and replaceable carbide
glass/ice breaking tip that’s exposed when
the closed blade is squeezed into the handle.
Wavy curves on handle and blade hold
rope/line placed between the partially
open blade and handle letting you
scissor cut rope and cord, trimming
flyaways without fully opening the
blade. PlainEdged section at the
blade’s tip is for stripping and
whittling.

We had an in-bound air ambulance
helicopter call in an emergency on themselves.
They ended up ditching in 6 foot seas with 40 knot
winds. When the pilot’s emergency call went out,
we launched two inflatables to reach him. My
Spyderco Rescue easily parted taught lines from
the inflatable tied to the sinking helicopter and
although hypothermic, we got the pilot out. Good
news is he was returning to the field and had no
passengers or patients on board.

Sometimes big things come in small
packages. A perfect case in point is the
Spyderco Dragonfly. The Mini Cooper
of knives, it packs high-speed cutting
performance into a very compact package.
Its mid-sized blade and ergonomic handle
are complemented by a front-finger choil
and spine cusp, allowing you to safely
choke up near the cutting edge for
maximum control.

C36G Military
C30BK2 Remote Release2
It started as a personal endeavor: Someone asked
Spyderco’s chief designer “What knife would you send
with your son or daughter on a military deployment?”
He responded with three criteria: The blade had to
offer ferocious cutting potential and edge life; it had
to be lightweight and ergonomic; and it had to be as
indestructible and maintenance-free as humanly possible.
“Only then would I consider sending it with my son or
daughter.”
Many outdoor sports and activities include gear that
makes it challenging to carry or access a pocketknife
clipped at waist level. The spring-loaded barrel clip of
the Remote Release clips easily to a personal flotation
device (PFD), spray shirt, harness buoyancy belt/vest,
carabiner—even your bootlaces. The barrel clip’s
quick-release pin is positioned near the Spyderco Round
Hole, letting you unhook and open the folder in a single
motion without having to rotate the knife in hand.
“
I was kayaking when my kayak
caught up in a hole. The bow
pulled under the fast moving water
and the kayak inverted, the bow
wedging under a rock, pinned
there by a tree branch. I managed
to unsnap my Remote Release
from my PFD and hack and saw
through the branch, releasing the
boat and saving my life.
If I hadn’t been carrying the
knife, I’m certain I wouldn’t have
been able to resurface.
- Mike from North Carolina
”
The resulting Military Model evolved into a knife that many
consider the cornerstone of Spyderco products and one of
the most enduring designs ever produced. The perfect
synthesis of a CPM-S30V stainless blade and a slim
G-10 handle, it feels like a natural extension of the
hand. Its oversized blade hole supports positive
one-handed deployment- even while wearing
gloves- and its open-handle construction
allows debris to be easily flushed or
blown out, ensuring reliable performance in the harshest operational
environments. Together, these
features keep the “Millie”
uncomplicated, field ready
and utterly trustworthy.

Left for years under flowing river water, stones
in the riverbed become smooth and symmetrical.
Crickets are like that. Small, round, snug in a
closed hand, they’re light enough to clip anywhere
on your person or use as a money clip. Chris
Reeve-inspired Integral Lock uses the handle
scale as the lock’s liner so it remains slim-as-a-pin
with the fewest moving wearable parts. Curving,
ultra-fine tip wins praise for fingernail cleaning,
crafting or box cutting.

nearly always one folder that becomes your “go-to” knife.
Unconsciously you reach for it first, like your favorite jeans or
shoes. That knife is comfortable. It’s a natural extension of
your hand. And it cuts and carries complication-free every time
with no fuss or ongoing maintenance. We call it the Native. Its
CPM-S30V blade and double handle indents magnify cutting
control letting you grip tight and high on the handle, closer to
the cutting edge. It’s also our best folder value: USA

Frank Centofante, former president of the

as The Godfather of Knifemaking, was an
extraordinary craftsman and mentor. Spyderco
was honored to work with him on several
projects, including the Centofante3 with
channeled FRN handle and inlaid Palladian
silver bug. An exquisite gentleman’s
folder designed by a true gentleman,
it is one of our most time-honored
collaborations.
Over 20 years ago Spyderco released a hunting style knife called
the Hunter. Through our constant process of improvement, it
evolved into the Pro-Hunter, then the Pro-Venator and finally
into a model called the Stretch. We call this process CQIConstant Quality Improvement. We Stretched the Pro-Venator
thinner and longer into one of our most purified designs to
date. Today it heads the list as a personal
favorite model of many Spyderco

C101 Manix2 86mm- NEW!
C103 P’Kal
A recipe for folding knife success: Start with
top-rated hard-use lock. Add an exotic highcarbon steel blade. Manufacture it in Golden
using unforgiving tolerances. Then toss in a
healthy dash of American innovation. These
ingredients combined make the Manix2 one
of Spyderco’s strongest folders. Patented Ball
Bearing Lock has a hardened free-floating ball
bearing contained in a custom polymer cage.
The ball bearing enables the lock to self-adjust
across a large surface while smoothly and
consistently locking-up solidly and confidently.
Full steel scale liners are scalloped, extending
beyond the G-10 handle scales to provide
enhanced texturing around the perimeter of the handle. This one isn’t
slipping out or around in your
hand. The liners pull double
duty by increasing handle
rigidly and strength.
Pikal is a Filipino martial arts genre. P’Kal is a collaborative folder from
Spyderco and Shivworks design for the specialized practice of Pikal.
Used with reverse-edge tactics (edge facing inward toward the user) the
blade’s point is readily positioned to hook, poke and pierce. A removable
(threaded and tapped) Emerson Opening Feature attaches to the blade’s
spine, catching a pocket’s top when drawing the knife and opening the
blade in one swift motion. The Spyderco P’Kal is designed specifically
for undercover law enforcement.
C103TR P’Kal Trainer
P’Kal’s specialized training makes a trainer
essential. Identical to the live version
in size, balance and proportion but
with a non-sharpened blade for safe
practice. Red G-10 handle denotes
it a trainer.

control and lessening fatigue and pressure. Ball

C114 Phoenix
by Howard Viele
C136 Persistence– new!
Persistence means continuing without changing
function or structure. It describes ongoing existence
regardless of interference or challenges. Some even
say persistent personalities experience déjà vu more
frequently due to their repetitive drive. We thought
it a great knife name as it also means steadfastness
and never-give-up-attitude. A smaller Tenacious,
the Persistence’s G-10 laminate handle is milled
for sustained comfort and fatigue-free cutting.
Deliberate positioning of the Spyderco Round Hole,
relative to the pivot, deposits the hand in just the
right spot for fumble-free one-hand blade open/
close. The sharpened edge runs from tip to tang.
You can look at hundreds of custom knives
side by side and nearly always recognize a
Viele. Sleek as a wet seal, techie, edgy and
modern, Howard’s blades have his signature
logo–three small holes–a symbol representing the Japanese God of War. The
Viele Phoenix showcases Spyderco’s
dynamism with a Ball Bearing Lock
and Howard’s signature profile
and personality. Its titanium
handle, cream Micarta scales
and deep finger choils
combine to create a
dramatic flow from
tip to clip.

C122 Tenacious
The word is out among Knife Knuts that Spyderco’s
value-oriented knives like The Tenacious offer way
more than the norm: Spyderco manufacturing quality,
performance features like G-10 handle scales, jimped
Walker LinerLock, lined lanyard holes and full skeletonized steel liners. Feature-for-feature, dollar-fordollar, performance-for-performance the Tenacious
was Blade Magazine’s best buy for 2008 for a reason.

Spyderco Sage Series
A Sage is a wise, experienced person who’s earned their title
via sound judgment and extending their best effort at every
opportunity. The Sage Series manifests Spyderco’s three
decades of pioneering knife-crafting and innovating. The series
will reprocess a similar shaped- and sized-folder, releasing a
new version annually. Each rendition highlights a locking
device or mechanism and credits that mechanism’s inventor.

Titanium- NEW!
C128 Leaf Storm
by Kevin Wilkins
The Sage Titanium focuses on knifemaker
Chris Reeve’s embellishment of the original
Walker LinerLock and his mutating it into
an R.I.L. - Reeve Integral Lock. His
modification uses the handle scale as the
lock’s liner, with the back portion of
the handle doubling as both handle
spring and lock. This dispenses
the need for internal liners
and the knife can be
manufactured much
lighter and slimmer.
American Kevin Wilkins started his career as an art
student, graphic artist and an art director. A move
to Berlin in the early 90s inspired him to apply
his art savvy to his passion - knifemaking. It’s
highly likely living in Germany introduced
him to the idea of German-influenced
engineering and innovation. His Leaf
Storm folder fits in the watch pocket
of your favorite jeans. A titanium
handle scale and pivot screw and
a peel-ply natural-colored G-10
overlay shout complex and
high tech.

C134 Gayle Bradley- NEW!
A former BladeSports (World Cutting Competition)
champion, Gayle Bradley makes hard-use knives that plow
through anything including 14, 1-inch bundles of hanging
rope—a BladeSports cutting competition record. These
aren’t knives for the fingernail cleaner or showman but for
down on the ground, gritty and dirty use.
Although a longtime knifemaker, this is
Gayle’s first collaborative folder with
a production knife company.
C129 Cat- NEW!
Why do knife companies insist on applying anthropomorphic
descriptions to knives? In our defense it’s the round hole
and a super sharp edge. They’re animalistically reminiscent
of eyes and claws. Think cats. Cats represent predatory
resourcefulness, feline sleekness, sharp claws, superior
vision and efficiency. The Cat folder expresses all
these attributes with a carbon fiber handle, Walker
LinerLock, deep carry wire pocket clip.

C130 Chicago- NEW!
Laws. Whether necessary, good or just nutty, they’re
intended to establish order and ward off chaos. When our
government and society implement rules, we do our best
to live within their parameters. As an example, many U.S.
metropolitan cities draw the line for carrying pocketknives
in public to those with blades two inches in length or under.
The Chicago is just that- two inches of flat ground CPMS30V blade urbanely outfitted with carbon fiber handle scales
and Michael Walker LinerLock®. Its handle is shaped and
sized ergonomically with full-length skeletonized liners. Its
leaf-shaped blade effectively cuts everything across the board
(including the board)- from significant strenuous cuts like
carpet and poly rope to innocuous tasks like fingernail cleaning
or scraping tape off of glass. This one is for Chicagoans or
anyone looking for a city/suit knife.

Knives as essential tools exist
in every culture. Shapes and
styles are dictated by a people’s
needs, be those agricultural,
spiritual or self preserving.
Taking ethnic knife designs and
adding a “Spyderco touch” is the
core of our continuing Ethnic
Series. The latest is the Chokwe.
Located in the Zambia/Democratic
Republic of Congo region of
Central Africa, the Chokwe people
are agricultural gatherers, fishermen
and hunters. Positioned highly in their
society are blacksmiths crafting fixed
blades for harvesting and everyday use.
Our Chokwe is patterned off a traditional fixed-blade design that has been
around relatively unchanged for 300
years. It has a triangular-shaped blade
and coffin-shaped handle. Holes in
the G-10 handle reduce weight and
allow for indexing and attachment to a
longer handle or pole. This is a historic
and cultural design, streamlined into a
modern folder.
When we sell a Chokwe folder, a portion of that sale goes to “Keep a Child Alive.”
Spyderco is honored to support this program which is dedicated to providing
life-saving anti-retroviral treatment, care and support services to children and their
families with HIV/AIDS in Africa and the developing world by directly engaging the global public
in the fight against AIDS. The Chokwe knife design came out of Africa (the Zambia/Democratic
Republic of Congo region of Central Africa) so we put something back in with every one we sell.

Small wonders. Interesting how some small things can hold
inordinate power. An atom, viruses, kindness and babies. The
smallest locking folder in Spyderco’s line is the Ladybug. Don’t
underestimate its cutting ability by looking at its size. It may
fit on a keychain or inside a pocket, but cuts like a lion. Blade

As the laws and guidelines for pocketknife
carry change, so must we. More countries
are enacting restrictions on folding knives
with locking blades. Spyderco addresses this
by releasing a series of non-locking folders
we call SLIPITS. SLIPITS are traditional
Spyderco CLIPITS but without lockable blades.
A SLIPIT blade is held open by a notched or
slip-joint (thus the name) located at the knife’s
pivot. When closing the blade, the same notch
produces resistance functionally similar to a
traditional slip-joint penknife. The addition of
a deep finger choil/indent positions the index
finger directly behind the blade for choking up
nearer the cutting edge with enhanced control
and dexterity. Positioning the index finger in
the choil not only heightens control, it keeps
the blade secure and open during cutting.

The Spyderco Way. Everyday.
C131 Bob Terzuola SLIPIT- NEW!
Some names in the cutlery industry, everyone knows. One is Bob Terzuola or we call him,
Bob T. Bob is the acknowledged founder of the folding tactical knife. In our industry he’s
rock star. His fourth collaboration with Spyderco is a non-locking SLIPIT with a CMPS30V modified Wharncliff blade. Bob’s unique approach to the slip-joint is a non-locking
mechanism called the Ball Joint. A finger choil/guard behind the sharpened edge
positions the index finger away from the open blade and stops it from closing on
the hand when cutting.
Spyderco is dedicated to reaching outside our small company and lending a hand wherever and whenever we can.
We’re companionate in several projects both world-wide and within our local Colorado community. When you
purchase specific Spyderco knives, you’re lending a helping hand as well. We thank you sincerely!
C133 Bug- NEW!
C137 Honeybee- NEW!
Aerodynamically bumble bees shouldn’t be able to fly. Too bad
someone forgot to tell the bees that. It defies both nature and
expectation that something that small performs such a grand
maneuver. Like bumblebees, Spyderco Bugs and HoneyBees
perform the unexpected. Our smallest folders, they pack
stinging cutting clout in micro-sized SLIPITs. Resistant
pressure at the knife’s pivot area holds the blade open
and extended when cutting. Handles are flat with
a small stainless surface ready for you to engrave,
embellish or customize as jewelry or a gift item.
Handle lanyard-hole accommodates a necklace-chain
or keychain.

In 2006, off the coasts of Australia, there were 21 reported cases of large
whales entangled in fishing gear. Of those, there were four confirmed
deaths, nine unknown fates and eight that were rescued.
Whales are dying. There is no way to know exactly how many lose their
lives in this way because many incidents are never witnessed or reported:
however, as fishing activities increase, so do the incidents of whale entanglement. These magnificent creatures, which many believe are fish,
are actually warm-blooded, air breathing mammals that bear live young
that are nursed on mother’s milk. And they need our help to survive.
In 2005 Doug Coughran (Senior Wildlife Officer- Western Australia
Department of Environment and Conservation) knew that a
specialized cutting tool was needed to make their whale rescues more
effective and safer for his rescue teams. Doug’s teams used small
inflatable rafts to go out into open water in the Indian Ocean to save
entangled whales. Since the whales are
typically 26-39 feet in length and weigh several tons, the teams
use a 10-foot rescue pole to reach into the water to cut
away the lines entangling
the frightened, distressed creature.
To ensure that his teams had the
best possible tool for this
demanding job, Coughran contacted
knifemaker Jim Steele to develop
and design.

Steel knew that cutting
tangled, water soaked lines
was a task best suited for a
serrated edge and suggested that
Coughran contact Spyderco, the
pioneer in modern serration technology.
Spyderco embraced the project and created
a custom-designed, fully-serrated Hawkbill
blade. We sent the blade to Coughran for
Australia’s National Workshop for Large Whale
Disentanglement, where it was demonstrated on
40mm and 50mm rope with impressive results. Two days
later, the blade went operational in the rescue of a 10-meter
Humpback whale that was entangled and immobilized by two
sets of pot gear. After meticulously addressing the rope wraps,
five cuts were made to free the whale.
Six weeks later, the blade released a pregnant Humpback that had a
set of pot gear wrapped around her tail more than a dozen times. At
the time of the rescue, she was being circled by sharks that were waiting
for her to struggle to exhaustion before they attacked.
To date, five whales and an unborn calf owe their lives to the Spyderco Whale
Rescue Blade and the courageous efforts of Coughran’s teams. Forty-eight
Whale Rescue Blades are currently in service in Australia and off the East Coast
of the U.S. We appreciate the opportunity to make a difference in this noble effort
and commend the rescue teams in Australia and the U.S. for their dedication and
commitment to preserving these magnificent animals.
Spyderco Whale Rescue Blades are not available to the general public and are only provided
to recognized conservation groups directly through Spyderco.
Spyderco Salt Series Knives have H-1 blades. H-1 remains 100% rust free while holding a sharp,
long-lived cutting edge. H-1 is a nitrogen-based austenitic steel that we differentially workharden that will never rust. Nitrogen differs from carbon in that it doesn’t react or join in
when chloride shows up to start the rust party.
H-1 differentially work hardens along the cutting edge when processed or
sharpened making it’s retention and sharp quotient comparable to premium
carbon-based knife steels. Processing friction increases its Rc hardness
further elevating tensile strength and durability. Corrosion free
blades are irrelevant if the rest of the knife rusts so, Salt Series
internal components (sheaths, pivot pins and clips) are also
manufactured from rust impervious materials. Dive in.
Get wet. Paddle on. Liberate yourself from rust.
“
I work on a commercial fishing boat and
Salts are the best option I’ve found in salt
water. They’re impossible to rust. My son
dropped one in a bucket of seawater where it
sat lost, for weeks without showing any signs
of rusting. I just bought another one. H-1 is
amazingly perfect for my work.

Warrior– New
It’s common belief that Sheepfoot blades grew out of the need for specialized cutting tools in the maritime world. Nautical
history shows knives without pointed tips were used and advantageous to seafarers. Crew members working above-head in mast
riggings dropped their knives. Round tip blades lessened the chance the knife would puncture or cut crew and cargo as it fell to
the deck below. Also after months at sea, knives without pointed blades were less likely to injure anyone when sailors carrying
them made port and the blow-off-steam party started. We’re guessing naval commanding officers also appreciated Sheepfoot
blades for this reason as well. Fast-forward to today and round-tipped knives still find a solid foothold for safer, quicker cutting
in urgent situations.
When Spyderco released the first Mariner
Model in the 1980s. Promptly, word of the
knife rippled through the sailing crowd to
boaters and fishermen. This was a great knife
for use and carry in water. With the exception
of updating the blade steel, it remains as the
original. We’ve retrofitted it with an H-1
Sheepfoot blade and kept its svelte profile
and shackle key/drying vent. 100% rust
free blade, handle and clip.
The Warrior fixed blade
is one of the world’s
most intriguing combat
knives. Based largely
on the groundbreaking
research of closecombat icon Michael

If there was a way to shop for dive knives on the ocean’s
floor, you’d probably find a quite impressive product
selection. The most common complaint about dive
knives is how easily they’re lost. One solution: Indexfinger retention. Inspired by knifemaker Fred Perrin,
this is an oversized Index Finger Hole that holds the
blade in hand until you decide to release it. It also
frees up your fingers for picking up gear and adjusting
equipment—all while gripping/retaining the knife. The
blade is jimped above and below the hole and overlaid
with scaly-grip FRN. An
injection- molded buttonrelease sheath anchors
the blade (inserted left- or
right-handed) with an audible
snap, telling you you’re locked
and loaded.

FB23 Aqua Salt FB24 Jumpmaster- NEW!
Designed by competitive cutting champion Ed Schempp,
the Rock Salt is a full-tang camp knife that possesses
amazing balance and leverage. Its contoured FRN
handle scales, deep finger choil and scientifically
angled handle-to-blade angle ensure maximum
safely and control while providing ferocious
cutting power. Its austenitic H-1 blade is
extremely shock resistant and completely
rustproof. Best of all, its extraordinary
work-hardening proerties actually
enhance its edge.
A perfectly-proportioned fixed-blade knife, the Aqua
Salt has it all. Its thick, hollow-ground H-1 blade is
impervious to rust. It is mated to an injection-molded
FRN Volcano Grip® handle that ensures positive
control in even the wettest conditions.
Lanyard hole in both the blade and the
handle offer further security around
water, and an injection-molded
snap-fit sheath supports a variety
of convenient carry options.
When the 82nd Airborne’s Lieutenant Colonel Byran Hernandez
was looking for a high-performance, purpose-designed knife for his
Jumpmasters, he looked to Spyderco. A Jumpmaster oversees airborne
troops as they exit an aircraft during parachute operations. If a soldier
hangs up and his chute fails to deploy, the Jumpmaster needs a
reliable cutting tool to quickly and safely cut the static line. Spyderco’s
Jumpmaster is that tool . Its serrated Sheepfoot blade powers through
webbing, rope and other fibrous materials with a vengeance and, thanks
to its H-1 construction, is completely rustproof. Bi-Directional
Textured FRN scales guarantee a positive grip
and an ambidextrous injection-molded
polymer sheath allows the knife to be
strapped securely to the calf for rapid
access and deployment. The special
design of the Jumpmaster blade,
this is our best over-all in
edge retention.

FB05 Temperance2- NEW!
The most influential man in modern
American knifemaking was Bill Moran.
Bill’s been gone several years but during
his productive knifemaking career he
started the American Bladesmith’s Society
and set our knife industry down the
successful path it walks today. Bill midwifed
the ancient art of Damascus. All Damascus
knives made today are the result of his
discovery. He was also a Hall of Fame
member.
Before his passing, Spyderco was
fortunate to collaborate with Bill
Moran on two distinctly shaped
fixed blades. Still in our line-up,
they hold top honors for strong
ongoing sales and time-tested
performance. Both are tapered
from the spine to edge with
equal weight and balance
between handle and blade.

Yogi Berra said “It’s déjà vu all over again”. History does
repeat itself. The Temperance fixed blade is back and even
better. Leaf shaped VG-10 blade is full flat-ground and
double-distal tapered- both vertically from the spine to the
sharp edge and horizontally from tip to tang. Double tapering
lessens resistance and friction while the blade passes through
when cutting, penetrating or slicing. Contoured mochacolored canvas Micarta handle with a handguard and a flared
pommel, stop slipping forward or backward in the hand.

Bushcraft is a tradition, it’s a sport and it’s gaining popularity
world-wide. A regime of survival skills derived from
Bushmen of the southern hemisphere, it gained
mainstream attention in the UK through a man named
Ray Mears. Mr. Mears produces a televised series on
thriving, surviving and living in nature with nothing
but a knife, thrusting Bushcrafting into the public
spotlight. Spyderco’s Bushcraft results from a
three-fold collaboration between Tactical
Bushcrafter Chris Claycombe, the Bushcraftuk.

Bushcraft knives have specific parameters
with Spyderco’s Bushcraft holding true
to the genre. Blades must be between
three and five inches (ours has a fourinch blade) with no handguard, a
full-tang and a contoured natural/
organic handle. Bushcraft blades
are made from high carbon tool
steel, designed to hang onto an
edge expansively and be easier
to sharpen in the field. For

Our brown medium grit stones are open-cell
stones (friable) and will wear over time with
repeated use. Their abrasive level removes
steel stock on dull blades and edges requiring
re-profiling. Our white fine and ultra-fine grit
stones are closed-cell ceramics and won’t wear
with usage or time. They’re less abrasive, excelling at polishing and professionally finishing
edges and tightening an edge’s scratch pattern.
Ceramics are like glass and can shatter or chip
if dropped or handled roughly. Alumina ceramic
stones are temperature resistant, dishwasher
and autoclave safe.

Spyderco Sharpening Stones
People associate Spyderco with knives. It surprises some that our first product wasn’t a knife
at all but a sharpening system called a Tri-Angle Sharpmaker. The sharpener works around
patented triangular-shaped stones made from
Alumina Ceramic. The stones are U.S. made
in a process combining a bonding agent with
alumina particles (which are actually synthetic
sapphires). They’re shaped into triangles then
kiln fired at more than 3000 degrees F (1649°C).
On a Mohs hardness scale, Alumina Ceramic
stones measure 9 (out of 10) and don’t require
lubricants such as oil or water while using.
“
I am the worst knife sharpener in the world.
I’ve destroyed blades with stones, files and steel
to grinders. I got a Tri-Angle Sharpmaker and
less than a month later all I can say is: Incredible!
Hallelujah! I can’t believe it. Its an essential piece
of sharpening gear and my scissors will literally
shave hair off your neck. It’s money in the bank
for me without being obsessed about sharpening
knives or owning hundreds of dollars worth of
fancy equipment.
– Jim in South Carolina
”
204DVD
At Spyderco, the word sharp isn’t simply a
descriptive term. We think of sharp as a methodical experiment of testing and research to
explain and capture new sciences and technologies for manufacturing cutting edges. And it’s
forever ongoing.
What grit are Spyderco Stones?
Alumina ceramic stones are grit-graded differently than any other abrasive and not measurable by standards used for natural stones,
diamond abrasives or sand papers. When
abrasives are given a grit value they’re measured using a mesh. The size of particles able
to pass through the mesh determines the grit.
For example if sandpaper is 120 grit, this means
the particles able to pass through it are smaller
than a 120 sized mesh. Anything with a gritgrade is measured this way. Diamonds are also
grit-graded using mesh but on a separate scale
of measurement and a 400 diamond grit is more
coarse then a 600 grit. Japanese and Arkansas
stones use yet another scale which is how they
end up with grit numbers in the thousands.
Our abrasives use micron-sized particles of
alumina ceramic, so tiny they’re almost dust.
Grit is determined during the kiln firing process
to create fine or medium stones. Our ultra fine
stones are a fine stone, that is surface ground.
Cleaning:
Sharpening changes an edge’s shape by removing microscopic steel particles. The particles
adhere to the stone after repeated use and
will load the stone up, saturating it with steel
particles. Remove this residue by washing the
stones in fresh water and scrubbing with a powdered abrasive cleanser, rinse and air dry to
restore the stones’ effectiveness.

and thin profiled blades. Preset on one end of the base, a hole holds a triangle single stone at 12.5° for sharpening
scissors. The bottom of the base accommodates two side-by-side stones (flat side up) for benchstone sharpening.
Snap the plastic lid halfway over the base for use as a stabilizing handhold and two brass safety rods fit into the base
protecting the user’s hands during sharpening. Four stones and two rods fit inside the base and the lid snaps closed
for carry anywhere. The base is also pre-drilled drilled for permanent bolting to a table, counter-top or workbench.

Fine grit Golden Stone has diverse curves
and angles for sharpening almost anything. Hold the stone vertically on a
tabletop, and tilt it from side-to-side, raises one edge off the table creating
a 20° angle (40° total angle) for sharpening knife blades. Both sides are
elliptical with a large radius for sharpening PlainEdges, a smaller radius for
SpyderEdges (serrations). Position horizontally on its’ side creates a 12.5°
angle for scissors. A channel the length of the stone, de-burrs and hones
pointed objects. Suede carry case doubles as a non-skid counter top pad
for tabletop sharpening.

307 Slip Stone
Slip-shaped or teardrop stones are
tailored for sharpening curved blades,
woodworking tools, plane irons and
sophisticated shaped edges. They hone
flat, concave, convex edges, bringing
slant-edge and straight chisels to their
sharpened best. Fine grit slip is flat and
smooth, bringing out a professional finish
and tightening an edge’s scratch pattern to
ultimate sharpness. Sharpening with the
slip on top of its suede carry case keeps
the stone from sliding or moving while

“
With byrd knives I can give a quality
gift and not break the bank. If the blade
said Spyderco and not byrd it would end up
selling for $80.00-100.00 regardless where it
was manufactured. This is without doubt the
best choice out there for people looking for
quality on a budget.

The skeptics are out there breathing, still not convinced byrd Knives and Tools are meeting and even exceeding many consumer’s quality
and cutting expectations performance at a sensible price. We unveiled byrd Knives four years ago. Counting since how many skeptics
have turned into repeat customers proves our case. If you wholly commit to manufacturing quality, worth, and durability into your
knives people will buy and use them.
Byrds are produced in China and this was a serious consideration for Spyderco to manufacture knives there. We monitor and mentor our
makers and production facilities intensely. They’re produced from Spyderco blueprinted designs using only high-performance materials
and tomorrow’s engineering. All have 8Cr13MoV stainless blades and most come with phosphor bronze washers, adjustable pivots and
custom chosen handle materials. Each knife is fit and finished to a standard found in higher priced folders. The former skeptics have
spoken, byrd knife offers the best quality folder for the value on the market today.
“
I’d would never have bought a Cara Cara. My wife calls me the knife snob. I like more expensive knives
because they work better. My broke college son bought me one last Father’s Day. My first thought is, it’s
the thought that counts right? I used it at work for a few days and for the price and how it cuts I’ll carry
one all day long. Guess he’s pretty smart and that’s why we sent him to college.
- Bert from Missouri

Cara Cara Lightweight’s FRN handle
is molded to sit-and-stay in the palm.
Handle has Comet Hole cutouts with
ridged line feather texturing for
ergonomic maneuverability.
A size smaller than the Cara Cara, Meadowlark’s
3-inch blade places it center-ground in the
compact folder category and its size, completely
right for everyday carry. Meadowlarks cuts big
without announcing themselves when taken out
of a pocket.

BY04 Meadowlark
G-10 is a lightweight fiberglass
laminate epoxy resin discovered
hiding in the open by the knife industry
in the 1980s. Initially used for harduse durable goods like motocross bike
frames, safety helmets, even liners
for nuclear reactors, it makes an ideal
handle material by offering superior
grip and a resistance to temperature
extremes, chemicals, oil and water.

Few people can claim that something they
designed and built is truly unique. Yes. It was
designed by a rocket scientist. byrdRench is
the brainchild of an aerospace engineer in

from other multi-tools is its one-hand-open
full-sized locking knife blade and wrench.

BY10BK Robin LIGHTWEIGHT
Light-as-air FRN handle is deeply
textured, resistant to slipping and sliding.
The body consists of two halves connected
by a pivot. The pivot creates a slip joint plier
(with large and small bite) on one end and
an adjustable 9/16” wrench on the opposite
end. The pivot also rotates open, locking
both halves into a full-length tool that’s
comfortably chamfered with enough length
to torque on. When fully opened and
locked, there’s a magnetized screwdriver
on one end and wrench on the other
end. Housed inside are four screwdriver
bits: #2 and #3 Phillips-head and #1 and
#2 flat-head. The housing accepts any
standard sized bit including Allen and
Torx.® Rough file/hole-starter slides into a
spring sitting above the bits keeping them
in place. Releasing the pivot separates the
two halves allowing use of the wrench and
the screwdriver/knife independently or
simultaneously.

BY200 Duckfoot Sharpener
It is shaped like a duck’s foot. The Duckfoot sharpener’s many surfaces tally up to 15plus inches of diamond-coated abrasive sharpening area. Steel frame is nickel plated
with 600 mesh mono-crystalline diamonds bonded to the nickel. Angles and sharpening
surfaces include: 1”X5” flat diamond surface. 3-grooves run the length of the device:
A wide-radius channel for de-burring, and both a medium and narrow radius channel
hone pointed tools. When sharpening a knife blade, position the “foot” vertically upright
on a tabletop. Tilting it side-to-side lifts one edge off the table creating a 20° angle (40°
total angle) for blades. The long sides are elliptical with a large radius for PlainEdges
and a smaller radius for sharpening SpyderEdges (serrations). Positioning on its’ side
horizontally creates a 12.5° scissor sharpening angle. Suede carry case doubles as a
non-skid pad when sharpening on a counter or workbench.
Instruction DVD included.
Recommendation: Sharpening with diamond abrasives generates the best results using gentle pressure.
Pressing the blade hard against the sharpener dislodges diamond particles from the plating and can damage both
sharpener and cutting edge.
Length: 7” 177mm. Steel frame nickel plated coated with 600 mesh diamond. Weight: 5.1oz 145g

ingredients will determine what type of cake (steel) you end up with. Once
you have added all of the additional ingredients (elements) you are left with a
batter that is ready to bake (heat treat). Baking (heat treating) is just as much a

batter. Of course steel can be re-melted to a molten state, but that simply is the
beginning of becoming a new type of steel.
Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon; just as bronze is an alloy of copper and tin.
Historically, steels have been prepared by mixing the molten materials. Alloying
elements are melted and dissolved into molten iron to make a steel. The molten
steel is cast into an ingot, which is then rolled out (while it is still hot) and shaped
much like you would roll out cookie dough. As the steel begins to slowly cool
below the critical temperature, things start to happen inside the steel. At these
elevated temperatures, alloying elements are able to move around in the steel,
or diffuse.

the grains, the more boundaries, and the slower the steel. This limits the
performance capabilities of the steel both in corrosion resistance, and in wear
resistant carbide formation.

ABS
A black amorphous thermoplastic polymer with
high impact strength.
Almite
A coating used on aluminum handles similar to anodizing. Resistant to scratching and marring, it can
also be tinted to any color for visual appeal.
Alumina Ceramic
The compound used for Spyderco sharpening
stones. It is a ceramic-bonding agent mixed with
alumina particles (synthetic sapphires), shaped,
then kiln fired at temperatures in excess of 3000
degrees F.
Ambidextrous
Using both hands with equal ease. Pertaining to
knives, it is a knife that is not solely designed for a
left-or right-handed person but can be used with
equal ease by both hands.
Balisong/Butterfly
A knife design believed to have originated in the
UK, brought to the Philippines by English sailors,
and was adopted and popularized in the Philippines. Often used in Filipino martial arts. The
knife has two separate handle sections that rotate
round the blade’s pivots to create a handle and
then rotate back covering and protecting the blade
when closed.
Bolster
A piece of metal, generally nickel silver or stainless
steel, that is located at one or both ends of a folding knife handle.
Boltaron
A recycled ABS/acrylic PVS extruded alloy sheet
material used for making sheaths. It has excellent
impact strength and abrasion, chemical, and fire
resistance properties.
Caping
A term to describe the careful and detailed cutting
and removing of the hide from a game animal for
the purpose of taxidermy. More precisely it refers
to removing the skin from the head, shoulders
and neck.
Carbide
A hard, sharp carbon/iron material used where a
very hard material is needed such as in machining
or drilling steel. Spyderco uses carbide to make the
glass-breaking tip found on the C79 Assist model.
Center Line Grind
A grind down the center of a blade equally dividing it into halves. Only the bottom edge is sharpened and the top of the spine is left unsharpened
creating a false edge.
Choil
A choil is a dip or cut out separating the cutting
edge from the ricasso. It is also used to describe a
cut out, molded or formed area where the handle
and blade meet which positions/guards the index
finger while gripping the opened knife.
Choil Jimping
Small serrations or texturing located on the choil
of a knife’s handle where the hand grips. Jimping
creates tactile resistance, adds purchase, traction
and slip-resistance.

Spyderco’s trademarked term for their line of folding knives which feature a pocket clip. A CLIPIT
fan is often called a CLIPITEER.
Cobra Hood™
A machined flange of steel positioned over the
Spyderco round opening hole on the spine of the
blade which directs/positions your thumb over
the hole for quickly opening the knife blade. See
Spyderco C79 Assist.
Cordura
Cordura® is a certified fabric from INVISTA.
It is used in a wide range of products from luggage and backpacks to boots, to military wear and
performance apparel. It is long lasting, resistant to
abrasions, tears and scuffs. Spyderco utilizes this
product on our SpyderPacs.
David Boye Dent
Custom knifemaker David Boye removed a small
arc or dent of metal from the lock bar lever of his
knives. This removed piece lessened the possibility
of gripping the handle hard enough to depress the
lock and accidentally unlock the blade while using
the knife.
Detent
A minute divot or dimple machined into the blade
tang. A ball bearing drops into the detent hole
when the knife is in the closed position, holding
the knife blade closed inside the handle.
Diamond Coating
The mechanical entrapment of diamond crystals
into a metal substrate. This process operates by
depositing metal, layer by layer, from a plating
solution until enough metal is built up around the
diamond crystals to hold them in place.
DLC Coating
DLC (Diamond like carbon) is combined diamond
(AP3) and graphite (SP2) used for coating blades
and parts.
Double Distal Tapering
A blade that tapers vertically from the spine to
the sharp edge and additionally tapers horizontally
from tip to tang. Double Distal Tapering reduces
resistance and friction while the blade passes
through something during cutting.
Double Flat-ground
A blade that is ground flat on both sides of the
blade, tapering to an edge with no radius.
EDC
An acronym for Every-Day Carry meaning a knife
that is carried and used daily.
ELU
Acronym for “End-Line User”, the consumer who
uses Spyderco knives and sharpeners.
Embellishment
Term used to describe personalized engraving or
additional ornamentation added to a knife after it
is manufactured.
E.M.T.
Acronym for Emergency Medical Technician.
Emerson Opening Feature
Blade opening device invented and patented by
Mr. Ernest Emerson of Emerson Knives. It is
a hook protruding from the blade’s spine that
catches the edge of the pant’s pocket when drawing out –down - and back, opening the blade as
you deploy the folder. Licensed from Ernest Emerson, Pat. 5,878,500.
Ergonomics
The applied science of equipment design intended
to maximize productivity by reducing operator
fatigue, safety and discomfort. Knives which are
designed to be comfortable and less fatiguing to
use are labeled “ergonomic.”
Finger Choil
A purposeful and specific area/curve cut out
between the blade and handle. It creates a grip
position point closer to the cutting edge for better
control while cutting.
G-Clip
Adjustable thermoplastic clip affixed to fixed blade
sheaths to clip/attach the knife to a belt/pack in
varying directions.
Handguard
Protrusion/expansion on the knife’s handle
proximal to the blade keeping the hand safely positioned on the handle inhibiting sliding forward.
Hawkbill Blade
Blade shaped in a sharply curved hook like the
talon of a raptor. The inside edge of the blade is
sharpened and works particularly well for commercial fishermen who reach out and pull toward them
while cutting line, webbing and netting.
High Alumina Ceramic
The compound used for Spyderco sharpening
stones. It’s a ceramic-bonding agent mixed with
alumina particles (synthetic sapphires), shaped
then kiln fired at temperatures in excess of 3000
degrees F.
Kick
The unsharpened portion along the underside of
the knife blade where the edge begins. Keeps the
blade “kicked out” so the edge does not hit the
back spacer.
Kraton
A rubbery thermoplastic polymer used as a flexible
inlay on knife handles for enhanced grip.
Kydex
A thin thermoplastic commonly used for firearm
holsters and knife sheaths. It is flexible, resistant to
sweat, chemicals, oils and solvents. It is shaped by
heat and retains its’ set form.
Lanyard Hole
A small hole in a knife’s handle for threading
through a cord/string as a backup attachment
when using the knife around water or where it may
be dropped and lost.
Left/Right Hand Carry
Knife clip manufactured to affix ambidextrously to
either side of the knife, positioning the folder for
use by left- or right-handed people.
LEO
Acronym for Law Enforcement Officer.

BLADE SHAPES
Assist Blade (Patented blunt tip) Hollow
ground blade with a blunt tip designed to
prevent accidental puncturing or poking.
Designed for cutting webbing, rope,
seatbelts or clothing.
Bowie Shaped Blade Blade with an
upswept curving tip that can be (or not)
double-edged near the point. Named after
Colonel James Bowie who made the shape
famous in the 19th century American West.
Drop Point Blade A design popularized by
the hunting knives made by Bob Loveless and
Bo Randall. The tip of the blade is lowered
through a convex arc from the spine.
Hawkbill Blade A sharply curved blade with a
sharpened inside edge. Designed for cutting
while reaching out and pulling downward, it
is commonly used by commercial fishermen
for cutting line, webbing and netting.
Jimping Small serrations or texturing found
on a blade’s spine and/or in a finger choil
where the thumb and/or fingers grip the
knife. It creates tactile resistance and improves grip traction.
HANDLE (SCALE) MATERIALS
Almite A coating used on aluminum handles,
similar to anodizing. It resists scratching and
marring and can be tinted to any color.
Anodized Aluminum Subjecting aluminum
to electrolytic action, coating the aluminum
with a protective and decorative film.
Carbon Fiber Graphic fibers (the size of a
human hair) woven together then fused with
epoxy resin. Lightweight with a high level
of tensile strength it is three dimensional in
appearance and costly to manufacture.
FRN (Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon) A nylon
polymer mixed with glass fiber then injection
molded into formed and textured lightweight
high-strength knife handles.
Bi-Directional Texturing Patented texture
pattern molded into FRN handles with
forward and backward graduating steps
radiating outward from the center of the
handle. It provides resistance to slipping in
the hand.
Volcano Grip Our trademarked waffle
texture found on several of our FRN handled
knife models. It is a continuous pattern of
small squares providing tactile resistance to
slipping while gripped in the hand.
Leaf Shaped Blade A blade shape Spyderco
has been developing and refining since the
mid- 1990s. It has a more distinct point than
a spear point blade.
G-10 An epoxy filled woven glass fiber that
is rigid, impervious to temperature changes
and chemicals and can be tinted into different
colors.
Modified Clip Point Blade A blade ground
on the top (spine) in an angled or sweeping
line downward. The underside (where the
sharpened edge is located) is ground upward.
The two angles meet at the tip determining
the depth of the blade’s belly.
Kraton A rubbery thermoplastic polymer
used as flexible inlays on knife handles
enhancing grip.
Reverse “S” Blade Blade shape resembling a
backward S with the tip curving downward.
The thickest part of the blade (the belly)
curves in the same direction as the tip.
Sheepfoot Blade A blade with a round blunt
tip without a traditional point. Being
rounded lessens the chance of accidental
puncturing around livestock, inflatable watercraft and during emergency cutting.
Spear Point Blade Blade shaped with an
equal amount of curve on the spine and the
cutting edge with a distinct separating
grind line. The two curves meet, coming together at the point.
Emerson Patented Blade Opening Feature
A blade opening feature invented and patented by Ernest Emerson. It is a hook protruding from the blade’s spine that opens the
knife’s blade when drawing it from a pocket
by catching on the pocket’s edge.
Wharncliffe Blade A blade in which the point
of the knife drops downward from the spine
meeting a straight cutting edge at the
blade’s tip.
Double edged blade A blade with a sharpened edge on both the bottom and spine of
the blade.
Micarta Composite of linen or paper fabric
that is impregnated with epoxy resin then
formed into lightweight, durable and visually
appealing handles. It can be polished or bead
blasted to change its appearance and texture.
Natural Materials Natural materials such
as jigged bone, leather, mother of pearl,
abalone, stabilized woods and stone that are
used in making and embellishing handles.
Peel Ply Carbon Fiber: A carbon fiber filled,
epoxy resin lay-up that has textured material
placed on the surface to protect the material
during manufacturing. After manufacture
the material is removed and it leaves a grippy
texture in the epoxy making a non-slip handle
material
Stainless Steel Steel containing a minimum
of 12.5% chromium, making the steel
resistant (not stain proof ) to corrosion. The
chromium oxide (CrO) creates a barrier
to oxygen and moisture inhibiting rust
formation.
Titanium A non-ferrous metal used in knife
manufacturing for its high tensile strength,
light weight and corrosion resistance. Often
used for clips (Salt Series), handles and liners.
EDGE GRINDS
PlainEdge A sharpened knife blade with no
serrations or teeth sometimes referred to as a
“smooth blade”.
SpyderEdge Spyderco’s two-step serration
patterns consisting of one large and two small
serrations. The pattern increases the cutting
edge’s surface area by up to 24%,
Carbide Tip: A hard sharp carbon/iron bonded
material found in machining or drilling steel.
Spyderco uses carbide for the replaceable and
retractable glass breaking tip found on the C79
Assist model.
CombinationEdge A blade that is partially
PlainEdge and partially SpyderEdge at the
cutting edge.
Trainer A non-sharpened blade that is identical
in weight and proportion to its live counterpart
and used for training and practice purposes.
Spyderco trainers are red handled denoting they
are non-sharpened.
SPYDERCO LOCKING
MECHANISMS
Back Lock (B) Locking system positioned on the
spine of the handle that uses a rocker arm which
pivots in the center. A protrusion on one end
of the arm connects with a notch on the blade’s
tang locking the blade open.
Ball Bearing Lock (BB) A patented compressive
lock, wedging a stainless steel ball bearing
between a fixed anvil and the blade tang. The
ball is also utilized to detent the blade into the
closed position.
Chris Reeve Style Integral Lock (RIL) Developed
by custom knifemaker Chris Reeve using the
original Walker LinerLock in an integral form.
It functions like a traditional LinerLock with the
lock’s liner comprised from part of the handle
scale.
Compression Lock (CL) A small piece of metal
that is inserted, from the side, in between the
blade tang and the stop pin (or anvil pin)
Walker LinerLock (LL) Locking system
developed by customer knifemaker Michael
Walker. The blade is locked open by a leaf-like
spring that comes in from the side, butting up
against the tang of the blade.
Notch Joint (L) A non-locking blade held open
by a spring acting against it, providing resistance
to its’ opening and closing as it pivots within the
handle.
SLIPIT (L) Spyderco and byrd Knife folders with
non-locking blades held open via a notch joint
and a pocket clip. A CLIPIT with a slip joint
blade, thus SLIPIT.
Ball Joint Non-Locking System
Designed by knifemaker Bob Terzuola. A
restraining device keeping a knife blade from
closing by having the blade overcome a small
ball bearing to close. The Ball Joint also halfstops the blade when closing for additional
safety. Image of locking system from Peter.
GRINDS
Flat Saber Grind (Scandi) An edge ground
completely flat without a radius that tapers
from the cutting edge to a grind line down the
center of the blade.
Full Flat Grind A flat grind, leaving a
completely flat surface ground from the blade’s
edge all the way to its’ spine.
Hamaguri Also called an Appleseed or Moran
grind. It’s a convex grind made on a slacked
belt sander.
Hollow Grind A thin or shallow edge that is
ground with a radius, leaving a concave shape
above the cutting surface.
Single Bevel Grind Also called a chisel grind.
The edge is flat or hollow ground but on only
one side.
Spine Swedge Also called a false edge, it’s
an edge on the back of the blade’s spine that
is chamfered or non-sharpened. The swedge
removes weight from the blade adding balance
and penetration performance.
Zero Grind Similar to a full-flat grind but
without the secondary grind for the edge. The
edge is the same grind as the primary creating
a single flat side.
Zero Grind Saber (Scandi) Similar to a flat
ground saber (Scandi) but without a secondary
grind for the edge. The edge is the same grind
as the primary grind.
BLADE COATINGS
Black Electric Plating A non-reflective coating
adhered to steel using an electrostatic process.
It eliminates the steel’s reflective quality.
DLC (Diamond Like Carbon coating) is
combined diamond (AP3) and graphite (SP2)
used for coating blades and parts.
Titanium Carbonitiride Coating A ceramic film
coating that is hard (92Rc) less than 3 microns
thick. It provides high abrasion resistance and
low friction coefficient.
CLIPS
Integral Pocket Clip Pocket clip molded as part
of (integral to) the handle rather than a separate
component attached with screws. Found on
Spyderco’s C28BK Dragonfly Lightweight
Metal Clip The most commonly used clip on
Spyderco knives. They can be stainless steel or
titanium and vary, including chrome or black
plated clips, with or without holes, in several
shapes and sizes. Our metal clips attach to the
knife’s handle in a triangle pattern with barrel
bolts or three-screws. Most adjust to customize
carry positions and vary on different models.
Wire Clip A heat treated wire held in place on
the scale by a screw or barrel bolt. Some wire
clips are designed to carry deep in a pocket,
some have a higher profile, positioning the
knife higher and closer to the pocket’s edge.
Shackle Clip A spring-loaded barrel clip with
a release pin positioned near the Spyderco
Round Hole letting you unhook and open the
folder in one motion without needing to rotate
the knife in hand. It snaps through a loop for
attachment to a PFD, spray skirt, harness,
buoyancy equipment or carabineer. Found on
the C30BK2 Remote Release2.
