Introduction
Congratulations, you have just acquired the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet, an ergonomic and highperformance modem offering dynamic management of an ADSL-based Internet connection and its
sharing over a local network. Your Internet access can use either the Ethernet cable or the USB
port. Before using it, you will require a subscription with an ADSL service provider and an Internet
service provider using ADSL.
Before starting
In this manual, we consider that the following conditions are true:
1. You have a Analog line with an ADSL access.
2. You have a subscription with an Internet service provider (ISP), who has confirmed your
connection parameters (identifiers, password, DNS servers, etc).
Contents of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet box
In addition to the modem, the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet box also contains the following elements:

Located on the front of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet, the indicators provide information on the
status of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet and of its connections.

All of the connectors for the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet unit are on the back.
Refer to the connection diagrams in the “Ethernet Connection” chapter on page 7.

Ethernet Connection
This chapter provides the various connection diagrams for the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet. If you have
an Ethernet card, this type of connection is preferred over a USB connection (refer to the “Installing
via the USB port” chapter on page 34).
Note: before beginning, you must have installed an Ethernet 10Base-T card in your
computer. If you are using Windows 9x, in order to improve the booting time of Windows,
we advice you to enter a fix IP address to your network card, compatible with the IP
address of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet.
Note: when using your ADSL connection, you can simultaneously use your telephone or fax.
Direct connection
Proceed as follows to directly connect a computer to the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet:
1. Locate the crossed Ethernet cable (red). Connect one end of this cable to the modem’s LAN
port, and the other end to the RJ45 on the computer’s Ethernet card.
2. Locate the RJ11 cable. Connect one end of this cable to the ADSL port on the BeWAN ADSL
Ethernet, and the other end to your phone jack.
3. Locate the power supply cable. Connect one end of this cable to the Power port on the BeWAN
ADSL Ethernet, and the other end to an electrical outlet which complies with the specifications
indicated on the power pack.
Indirect connection to an external hub
To indirectly connect a computer to the BeWAN ADSL Internet, using an external Ethernet hub
(not supplied), proceed as follows:
1. Obtain a straight Ethernet cable (cable not supplied). Connect one end of this cable to the LAN
port on the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet, and the other end to one of the Ethernet ports on the
external hub.

2. Then connect the computer to the external Ethernet hub (additional cable not provided).
Note: of course, you can connect other computers and equipment to the external hub.

Profile configuration under Windows
To set the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet parameters, you must use the Installation wizard.
1. Insert the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your drive. If your PC’s configuration is set up for it, the
installation program will launch automatically. If it does not, run the autorun.exe program
which is located at the root of the CD-ROM.
2. Click on the product BeWAN ADSL Ethernet, and then select your language.
3. Click on Software and then on Wizard.
4. The Installation wizard appears. Click on Next.
5. Check that your modem is correctly connected by using the successive steps presented by the
Wizard; continue until the Configuration of the product window.
6. In the VPI and VCI headings, enter the required parameters of your ADSL service provider.
7. In the Modulation heading, select the modulation type required by your telecommunications
operator. We recommend that you use the Multimode modulation. Multimode takes in all of
the modulations used for appendix A (G.Lite, G.DMT Appendix A and T1.413). Then click on
Next.
8. The configuration procedure is performed.
•
Search for a BeWAN ADSL Ethernet
•
Erase all configuration files in modem
•
Upload profile to modem
•
Update internal flash of the modem
•
Reboot modem
9. At the end of the configuration of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet, the message “Your product is
successfully configurated” appears. Click on Finish.

Profile configuration under Mac OS
To set the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet parameters, you must use the Installation wizard (at least Mac
OS 9.x as an operating system).
1. Insert the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your drive.
2. Double-click on the CD-ROM icon, then on the Ethernet folder. Click on English.
Note: check that your modem is correctly connected (refer to the “Ethernet Connection”
chapter on page 7).
3. Click on BeWAN ADSL Ethernet.
4. The Wizard automatically searches the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet.
5. In the VPI and VCI headings, enter the required parameters of your ADSL service provider.
6. In the Modulation heading, select the modulation type required by your telecommunications
operator. We recommend that you use the Multimode modulation. Multimode takes in all of
the modulations used for appendix A (G.Lite, G.DMT Appendix A and T1.413). Then click on
Apply.
7. The configuration procedure is performed.
•
Upload profile to modem

Update internal flash of the modem
•
Reboot modem
8. Once the update and reboot is finished, the Wizard comes back to the settings window. You can
now close the Wizard.

Installation of the BeWAN PPPoE
Before installing the BeWAN PPPoE software, you must have connected the BeWAN ADSL
Ethernet.
With Windows 95
Installation of the Remote network access 1.3
The installation of the BeWAN PPPoE for Windows 95 requires the prior installation of the Remote
network access 1.3. Proceed as follows:
1. Insert the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your drive.
Note: once the CD-ROM has been installed, the driver installation program may launch
automatically. Disregard this. Close the Autorun window.
2. In the Windows Explorer, indicate the following path (supposing that your CD-ROM drive is
drive D): D:\ACCpack.
3. Double-click on the msdun13uk.exe file. The following window is displayed. Click on Yes.
4. Carefully read the licence contract, and then click on Yes. The driver installation begins.
5. You will then have to restart your computer. Click on Yes.
6. The installation resumes once the computer has rebooted.
Note: Windows may ask you to insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM in your PC in order to copy
files for your system.
Important: if a version conflict message appears, you must imperatively click on Yes in order to
keep the most recent file(s).

Installing the protocol
1. Run the autorun.exe program which is located at the root of the CD-ROM.
3. Click on Software and then on BeWAN PPPoE.
4. A window asks if you would like to install the PPPoE protocol. Click on Yes.
5. Carefully read the licence contract, and then click on Accept. The installation of the drivers
starts.
Note: Windows may ask you to insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM in your PC in order to copy
files for your system.
Elements installed
Element has been added to your system. In order to see it, click on Start, point to Settings, then
click successively on Control Panel, System and on the Device Manager tab.
•
In the Network adapters, the WAN/PPPOE/ADSL miniport element has been added.
Establishing your connection
1. During the installation, a connection named PPPoE connection was created. Double-click on
the My Computer icon located on your desktop.

2. Then double-click on Dial-Up Networking, and then on PPPoE connection. The
corresponding connection window opens. You have only to enter your identification settings.
3. Under the User name and Password headings, enter the identification parameters provided by
your Internet access provider.
Notes on the Internet connection:
•
The terminology used by the various Internet service providers can vary. To identify the user
name, the following expressions are also sometimes used: “client account”, “connection
identifier”, etc.
•
Do not confuse the connection identifiers (user name and password) with the message system
identification elements which your Internet service provider may have given you.
•
The connection identifiers are case sensitive.
4. If you do not want to enter your password upon each connection, select Save password.
Note: in this case, any person with access to your PC will be able to access the Internet
through your account.
5. Do not pay attention to the Phone number field. There is no need to modify it.
Note: with the ADSL service, it is not a call number which provides the connection with the
Internet service provider; rather, it is the user name.
6. Then click on Connect in the connection window. The connection is carried out and your
identification parameters are checked.
7. If the parameters are correct, the connection is established in a few seconds. The connection
window automatically disappears. To the right of the task bar, the remote access indicator also
appears.

Using and ending the connection
Once the connection has been made, you can use the Internet software of your choice. To visit a
web site, launch your browser.
When you have finished, you should disconnect. Indeed, closing the Internet software does not
necessarily terminate the connection in progress.
The remote access indicator, which is dependent on the Remote Access, indicates that the
connection has been established. Double-clicking on this indicator will open a window which
provides the main connection parameters (speed, connection duration...).
The Disconnect button will interrupt the connection.
Note: you do not have to open the previously mentioned window. To interrupt the connection in
progress, right-click the mouse on the remote access indicator, and then click on Disconnect.

1. Place the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your Macintosh's CD drive.
2. Double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
3. Double-click on the folder Ethernet, BeWAN PPPoE, English, then on the Installation of
BeWAN PPPoE icon in order to launch the software installation program.
4. The Installation of BeWAN PPPoE window opens. Choose Easy Install.
5. Select the disk where you would like to install the BeWAN PPPoE drivers by clicking on
Switch Disk.
6. Then click on Install.
7. The BeWAN PPPoE drivers are then automatically installed in the required folders of your
system.
8. When completed, a message indicates that the installation has been successful. Click on
Restart.

Creating your connection
1. From the Apple menu, open the Control Panels and launch the Remote Access software. The
Remote Access (BeWAN PPPoE) window opens.
2. In the Remote Access menu, select Modem….
3. A window opens where you can select the protocol which corresponds with your ADSL
subscription (Connexion via) and hardware which you are using to connect (Modem).

In the Connect via PopUp menu, select PPP over Ethernet.
•
In the Modem PopUp menu, select BeWAN ADSL Modem.
4. Close the window and save the changes to the configuration.
5. Return to the main Remote Access window.

As an example, we will simply indicate how to deprogram the automatic connection when
starting up your Macintosh. Uncheck Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP
applications. Click OK to validate.

With Mac OS X
With Mac OS X, it is not necessary to install the BeWAN PPPoE. This protocol is already included
in the operating system. The parameterisation and establishment of the connection using the PPPoE
protocol are described below.
Creating your connection
1. Double-click on your hard disk icon, then Applications, and then on System Preferences.
2. Click on Network.
3. In the Show pop-up menu of the Network window, select Built-in Ethernet.
4. Click on the PPPoE tab in order to enter the information about the subscription which you have
taken out with an Internet access provider.
5. Check Connect using PPPoE.
6. In the Service Provider field, enter your connection name.
Note: this name plays no role in the connection. It serves only to identify your connection. You
can therefore choose whatever you like. We thus recommend that you choose an easy to
recognise name (e.g. name of your Internet service provider).

7. In the Account Name field, enter the name which you will use for your Internet service
provider.

Here, we will not elaborate on the additional settings which can vary according to your desires
As an example, we will simply indicate how to program the automatic connection when starting
up your Macintosh. In the part Session Options, check Connect automatically when starting
TCP/IP applications. This will immediately open a connection window when starting up. Click
OK to validate.
10. Save these modifications by clicking on the Apply Now button. The settings in the TCP/IP and
Proxies tabs are the default settings.
11. In the System Prefs menu, click on Quit System Prefs.

1. Double-click on your hard disk icon, then Applications. Launch the Internet Connect
application.
2. In the Configuration pop-up menu, the Built-in Ethernet port is already selected. The
previously defined parameters are then displayed.
3. To launch the connection procedure, click on Connect. The automatic connection process will
then take place in various stages.

4. The Status part changes its appearance, and displays the main connection parameters (speed,
connection time,...).
Once your connection has been made, you can use the Internet software of your choice. To visit a
web site, launch your browser. For any additional information, refer to the software documentation.
When you have finished, don't forget to disconnect. Indeed, closing the Internet software does not
terminate the connection in progress. To terminate it, click on the Disconnect button.

Uninstalling the BeWAN PPPoE
With Windows 95
1. Click on Start, then point to Settings, and then click on Control Panel.
2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
3. In the Install/Uninstall window, select the PPP over Ethernet and then click on
Add/Remove….
4. A confirmation window opens. Click on Yes.
5. The uninstall procedure begins.
Note: Windows may ask you to insert your Windows 95 CD-ROM into your PC.
With Windows 98/Me
3. In the Install/Uninstall window, select the PPP over Ethernet and then click on
Add/Remove….
With Windows 2000
3. From the menu on the left, select Change or Remove Programs.
4. Select PPP over Ethernet, and then click on Change/Remove.
With Windows XP
1. Click on start, and then click on Control Panel.
2. Click on Add or Remove programs.
3. From the menu on the left, select Change or Remove Programs.
4. Select PPP over Ethernet, and then click on Change/Remove.

With Mac OS 8.6 to 9.x
1. Place the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your Macintosh's CD drive.
2. Double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
3. Double-click on the folder Ethernet, BeWAN PPPoE, English, then on the Installation of
BeWAN PPPoE icon in order to launch the software uninstall program.
4. The Installation of BeWAN PPPoE window opens. Choose Custom Remove.
5. Select BeWAN PPPoE,
6. By clicking on Switch Disk, select the disk from where you would like to uninstall the BeWAN
PPPoE drivers.
7. Then click on Remove.
7. The BeWAN PPPoE drivers are automatically removed from your system.
8. When completed, a message indicates that the uninstall procedure has been successful. Click on
Restart.

Installing via the USB port
USB connection
Note: when using your ADSL connection, you can simultaneously use your telephone or fax.
Proceed as follows to directly connect a computer to the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet:
1. Locate the USB cable. Connect one end of this cable to the USB port on the BeWAN ADSL
Ethernet, and the other end to one of the computer’s USB ports.
Note: you can also connect the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet to a USB port on a hub.

Installing the USB drivers
If you have an Ethernet card, this type of connection is preferred over a USB connection.
Installation with Windows 98
Note: depending on your initial configuration, your Windows CD-ROM may be required during the
driver installation phase with Windows 98.
1. Upon connecting the USB cable, Windows detects a new device (the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet).
The Add New Hardware Wizard is automatically launched. To begin installing the drivers,
click on Next.
2. Select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended), and then click on Next.
Then insert the BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your drive.
Note: once the CD-ROM has been installed, the driver installation program may automatically
launch. Disregard this. Close the AutoRun window and continue the installation using the Add
New Hardware Wizard.

3. Check the Specify a location box, and then click on Browse…. Enter the letter of your CDROM drive, and then enter the following path (assuming that your CD-ROM drive is drive letter
D): D:\Ethernet\USB.
Note: this indicates the folder containing the driver information (.INF file).
Click on OK and then on Next.
4. The Wizard indicates that it is ready to install the best driver for the device. Click on Next.
5. The files are then copied. Windows has completed the installation of the software needed for the
new device. Click on Finish.
6. Windows then detects another device. Click on Next.
7. Select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended), and then click on Next.
8. Use the same folder as the one selected in step 3. Click on Next.

11. Do not reboot your computer right away. Click on No in the System Settings Change window.
To improve the performance, it is now possible to assign a fixed IP address to your card.
Assignment of a fixed IP address
1. Click on Start, then point to Settings, and then click on Control Panel. Then double-click on
the Network icon.
2. In the box The following network components are installed, select TCP/IP -> BeWAN
ADSL Virtual Ethernet NIC, then click on Properties.

3. In the IP Address tab of the TCP/IP Properties window, select the option Specify an IP
address.
4. In the box IP Address, enter the IP address that you have decided to assign to the PC.
Important:
•
The PC’s IP address must imperatively be within the same addressing range as that of the
BeWAN ADSL Ethernet.
•
The PC’s IP address must be unique, i.e. different from those of the other equipment on the
local network (computers, BeWAN ADSL Ethernet...).
•
The PC’s IP address must be within a range reserved for private networks. Indeed, your
local network must not use addresses which are reserved for the Internet. This would cause
problems when connecting your network to the Internet.
If you have any questions about these elements, please check with a network specialist.
5. In the Subnet Mask field, enter the sub-network mask default value of the BeWAN ADSL
Ethernet, i.e. “255.0.0.0”.
In the above example, the IP address and the sub-network mask assigned to the PC are
compatible with the default IP parameters of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet (IP address:
10.0.0.138).
6. Then click on OK in each of the windows in order to validate the changes.
7. Then reboot your computer by clicking on Yes.

Installation with Windows Me
1. Upon connecting the USB cable, Windows detects a new device (the BeWAN ADSL USB).
The Add New Hardware Wizard is automatically launched.
2. Select Specify the location of the driver (Advanced), and then click on Next. Then insert the
BeWAN ADSL CD-ROM in your drive.

1. Click on Start, Settings, and then on Control Panel.

The Found New Hardware Wizard is automatically launched. To begin installing the drivers,

Telnet commands
Basic Telnet principles
The Telnet commands of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet provide you with access to certain advanced
functions.
To send a Telnet command, type it in and then press the ENTER key.
Notes:
•
After 2 minutes of inactivity, the Telnet session automatically disconnects.
•
You cannot open two simultaneous Telnet sessions.
1. Return to the Telnet commands root
Enter home
2. Obtain the list of Telnet commands
Enter help
3. Save each modification made to the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet
Enter config save, and then reboot the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet by entering restart
4. Close the Telnet session
Enter @close
Note: for more information about the operation of the Telnet software, please refer to the software's
online help.
Opening a Telnet session
To begin the Telnet configuration mode of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet from a PC running
Windows, proceed as follows:
1. Click on Start, and then on Run….
2. Enter telnet followed by the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet IP address, as follows: telnet 10.0.0.138
Then press the ENTER key.
Note: make sure that the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet is physically connected to your computer and
that you can carry out a "ping" without problems. If not, the Telnet connection may not operate.
3. Once the Telnet session is launched, you must enter a password. When the Password field
appears, enter your BeWAN ADSL Ethernet administrator mode password and then press the
ENTER key. By default, the password is bewan; the password is case sensitive.
4. Once your password has been verified, the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet IP address appears,
followed by the > character.

To modify the VPI and VCI of the BeWAN ADSL Ethernet, proceed as follows:
1. First delete the current configuration
