Greetings Winter 2011 from the shelter! By Christin Klimek, LAHS Director "Saving one animal won't change the world..... but it will change the world for that one animal." The quote above is an excellent reminder to those of us who many times feel as though we aren’t making a big enough impact in the world of animal welfare. It is so easy to see the statistics and feel frustrated and sometimes even defeated. It is estimated that 6 to 8 million animals enter animal shelters in the US annually, and that of those, approximately 50% are euthanized due to lack of space and adoptive homes. While this number is extremely sobering, we need to know that a difference is being made. In 1970, the number of estimated animals euthanized in shelters was 23.4 million. This means that all the hard work put forth by animal welfare workers and volunteers IS making a HUGE difference. Part of the LAHS’s mission is to promote responsible pet care and ownership. A significant part of this is educating the public on the importance of having their pets altered. We have been fortunate to have received special grant funding from the Curran Foundation to assist residents of our county have their female pets spayed. Since the program’s inception in August of 2006, over 2800 pets have been spayed! Having these animals spayed may potentially have prevented thousands of unwanted cats and dogs, thus making a huge impact on overpopulation in our community . We are hopeful that we can sustain this program well into the future and are seeking ways to do so as our current funding may be coming to an end. Besides applying for additional grant monies from other sources, the LAHS would like to see Douglas County instate a $1 per capita fee assessed on annual taxes that would provide over $30,000 annually. 100% of the monies collected would go directly to cover the spay procedures and the LAHS would continue to do the administration of the program at no additional cost. If you would like more information about this funding option, please feel free to contact me! If you are supportive of the idea, please contact your County Commissioner and let him or her know that it is important and you would like them to support it as well. Together we can continue to make a difference, one animal at a time! MN SNAP, Mobile Spay Unit Visited our shelter in November and March of this past year…. providing 69 spays and 26 neuters to pet owners unable to shoulder the cost on their own. LAHS will be hosting them again in the spring. To find out more about their services go to www.mnsnap.org. Fundraising Success…. A Hypnotic Halloween... On October 28th, the Lakes Area Humane Society held it’s 3rd Annual “Hypnotic Halloween” fundraising event at the Holiday Inn. The festivities began with social hour, treats and a silent auction, with a large number of items donated by many generous local businesses and individuals! The highlight of the night was the hilarious hypnosis show provided by Randy Buker, certified hypnotist with Dream Weaver Comedy Hypnosis. The guest and participants has a fantastic time during the hypnosis show, which was entertaining from the beginning to the very end! The evening was wrapped up with a costume contest for all ages. Those who wanted to show off their costumes and creatively had a chance to win great prizes. Over $2300 was raised for the shelter! The LAHS wishes to extend a HUGE thank you to Randy and Dreamer Weaver Comedy Hypnosis Show for the donation of his services and also to the Holiday Inn for the donation of space for the event! Alexandria 5K/10K Run... The Lakes Area Humane Society held it’s 5th Annual “Alexandria 5K/10K Run” event on September 18th, which brought over 345 individuals to participate in the 5K, 10K, 1K Kid’s Run and Dog Walk! The event was held at Big Ole Park in Alexandria and the route was certified and sanctioned by the US Track & Field Association. All runners were provided with timing chips to record their official times. Participants in the 5K, 10K and Dog Walk received a commemorative t-shirt and drinks/snacks were provided as well. Runners finishing in the top three of each event in their age category received medals or ribbons. All children participating in the 1K run, received medals and water bottles. Over $3,600 was raised for the shelter! Special thanks to all the volunteers who help to make this a successful event. Thanks to the following run sponsors: 2 Kids Making a Difference! AAbout LAHS… Mission To promote responsible care and training for household pets through education and public awareness and, when appropriate, to provide a safe and sheltering haven for lost and abandoned animals pending placement in suitable permanent homes. Location/Contact Payton Olson recently celebrated her 9th birthday and rather than accepting gifts for herself, she asked everyone that came to her party to bring something to donate to the animals cared for by the shelter! Here’s a great picture of Payton with all the fantastic supplies she received..she was so excited to bring them in to the shelter and share with the animals. THANK YOU Payton! 3811 Nevada Street SW Alexandria, MN 56308 320-759-2260 lahs@gctel.net www.lakesareahumanesociety.org Shelter Hours Monday & Wednesday 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm Thursday & Friday 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm Saturday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm Board of Director Kris Krieger, President Amanda Scheenberger, Vice President and Acting Treasurer JoAnna Meduna, Secretary John Smith Peter Koel Shelter Staff A HUGE thank you to the Osakis Girl Scout Troop # 821! Thanks so much! ~ Brittany L. 4 In August, my wife and I were in Alex visiting a friend and happened to see a couple beagles that you had. The little female stole my heart and we adopted her. We have named her Sunshine because she really brightens up our days, we really love her. She is so fun to watch and play with and her nose is always getting her into mischief. Thanks for all that you do to take care of the dogs and cats! ~The Hamlin’s “Sunshine” showing off her new coat and snuggling with her kitty friend! Thank you for providing a place for animals like “Sasha” who are needing new homes. To keep up to date with the latest recall information, you can go to the following links provided by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Federal Food & Drug Administration: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/newpetfoodrecalls/ http://www.avma.org/petfoodsafety/recalls/default.asp If you find that the food or treats that you are currently feeding your pet are listed on the recall list, discontinue feeding and contact your veterinarian.
