From the Great Depression to Great Wealth
Quante Upright Piano
th
Pianos made by Quante in the 19 century were favorites of
cabaret patrons due to their unusual string resonance. This one
found its way into a first class saloon in San Francisco, and survived
the great earthquake, sustaining only a warped top as damage.
Drinks or tokes for the pianist were placed on the wide wooden
block to the left of the keyboard.

“Lasagna” Costume
Costume Design: Michael Travis
The Lasagne Costume was a particular favorite of Liberace's. He

that he wore this costume when he made lasagne because "it
didn't show the stains". The unique feature of this costume is its
sectional cape: when Liberace would spin around sections of the
cape would "fan" out.

Gold Lame Jacket
Costume Design: Sy Devore
After wearing a white suit of tails at his Hollywood Bowl
performance in 1952, fans were curious to know what Liberace
would wear next. When asked after the concert, Liberace looked
at his sister’s gold lame dress and said “gold lame”. And thus
started what Liberace would later say had become an expensive
joke”. Liberace wore this gold lame jacket for the grand opening of
the Las Vegas Riviera Hotel in 1955. Up until that time, concert
pianists usually wore black tuxedos when performing. But, from
that time on, Liberace costumes were an expected part of his “live”
performances.
