Pastor’s Notes
The Season of Christmas began on Christmas Eve as we
began celebrating the Lord’s birth and the season continues on
with several celebrations, which could rightly be called the
Festival of Lights. Last weekend we celebrated the feast of
Holy Family and last Wednesday and Thursday we celebrated
the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God (which we celebrate
on New Year’s Eve and Day). Today we celebrate the Epiphany
of the Lord and the Christmas season concludes with the
Baptism of the Lord next Sunday. All of these celebrations are
like a Festival of Lights, which help us celebrate the birth of
Jesus and the gift God gave us as He reached out to us in a very
definitive way.
This weekend we celebrate The Epiphany of the Lord. This
is the commemoration of the day when the three Wise Men,
Magi or Kings came from all ends of the earth to worship the
newborn king, brought with them the gifts of gold, frankincense
and myrrh. Gold: was the most valuable metal on earth, a
symbol of divinity … the ultimate gift … the perfect offering to
royalty. Frankincense: from a small tree found only in Arabia
and parts of northern Africa. The hardened resin of the plant
was used as a medicine for many ailments … to stop bleeding
and heal wounds and was used as an antibiotic for poison. It
was a soothing balm for bruises, ulcerations and paralyzed
limbs. Myrrh: was an expensive extract from resin of the myrrh
tree. It, too, was used as a medicine, but more significantly, it
was used in embalming the dead. Only the wealthy and
members of royalty were embalmed. Myrrh was a gift reserved
for royalty.
On this day the church gives us pause to reflect on our own
gifts God has given to us for the good of the church and the
world. In baptism we are dedicated to live lives in the footsteps
of Jesus. By its very nature baptism brings us into a believing
community of brothers and sisters, who likewise are set apart to
give life to others by using our own spiritual gifts. We give and
do what we naturally have, and in doing so extend the hand of
Jesus to a world that needs it deeply. The gifts are many and
varied. We see the expression of those gifts in scout leaders and
coaches, community leaders and workers, teachers and
teacher’s aides, those preparing meals for the poor and those
who work the soup kitchens to name just a handful and so, so
many more. We live to make the lives of others better and in
doing so extend the hand of God to those who need His love
and compassion. Our expressed gifts, given with hearts of love,
are just as precious as those original gifts given to the ChristChild. As we continue with our Christmas celebration, consider
your own gift and give it freely and the love of God will abound
all around us. Merry Christmas!
I am pleased to share with you that I have hired two people
to work in our Parish Office. They are: Kathy Ferris, who will
be my executive secretary, administrative assistant and lead
person in our parish office. Kathy will be assisted by Tammi
Flores, who as a bi-lingual secretary, will help with our needs in
the parish office. Of course, we are blessed with so many
volunteers who provide invaluable services to our parish
community. As we welcome both Kathy and Tammi, it gives
me pause to thank the many volunteers who give so generously
of their time and talents.
At the same time, Sue Love who served us for many years
as Office Manager, will be moving into her new position as
Program Manager for our Religious Education and Faith
Formation Ministries. In doing so, she will be working
alongside Joyce Pagan, Dan Miller and Kelly Krammer to help
them direct these vital ministries. So Sue, I pause to thank you
for your dedicated years of service to our Parish Office. May
your gifts bless our important and vital efforts in Religious
Education and Faith Formation Ministries as together we
embrace our future.

loves you and so do I. Make it a good week!

The Catholic Church of Glen Burnie - Snow Policy
Weekday Masses: If Anne Arundel County closes schools, we will
cancel that particular weekday’s 6:30 am & 8:30 am Masses at Holy
Trinity. Our thinking is that if it is unsafe for our children to go to school
it is equally unsafe for adults to get to church. Many have a passion for
honoring God and beginning their day worshiping at weekday Mass. At
the same time God is not honored by broken arms or legs or car accidents.
If school is late but not cancelled, we will have ONE Mass at 10:00 am,
which may also be a funeral Mass.
Weekend Masses: If (1) we are threatened with a snow blizzard or ice
storm on the weekend AND (2) the Archbishop goes on TV to ask us to
use discretion about attending Mass on that particular weekend, he is
concerned that some folks who should not attempt to worship and are
vulnerable to hurting themselves might imprudently go out in deep snow
or unsafe ice and actually hurt themselves. Only when these two factors
come together will we cancel weekend Masses. In my 38 years of
priesthood this circumstance has happened only twice.

A MESSAGE FROM FAITH FORMATION AND
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION -Dear Families of the Catholic Church of Glen Burnie,
May the Peace, Love, and Mercy of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, be
with you and your families as we prepare for a new year.
Over the past few months, our parish center staff has been
working at evaluating our gifts and strengths. Our ultimate goal
was to utilize the gifts of each staff member to carry out the
Mission of the Church within our Parish Community. After a
self-evaluation, prayer and much conversation Joyce Pagan and
Dan Miller came to understanding that some change should be
made to their responsibilities. Effective in January, Dan Miller
will become responsible for Sacramental Preparation (to include
1st Reconciliation, 1st Eucharist and Confirmation), High School
Youth Ministry and Young Adult ministry. Joyce Pagan will be
responsible for the Religious Education for our students in grade
Pre-K through 8th Grade (including our Special Religious
Education Program) and Middle School Youth Ministry.
Additionally, some changes will be made in the names of the
program we offer. Pre-K through 8th grade classes will be
referred to as “Religious Education.” This is made in an attempt
to help parents differentiate between Sunday classes, sacramental
preparation as they are two separate ministries. Faith Formation
will focus on sacraments, and forming the faith of our parents,
teens, and young adult communities through various ministerial
and faith building activities.
Please be aware that through this transition and into the future,
Joyce and Dan will continue to work together to ensure all of our
families continuing their faith filled experience as members of this
Catholic Church. For a quick reference, here is our contact
information:

Boletín Parroquial de la
Comunidad Hispana
poder no admite contrincantes.
religiones organizadas.
The Three Wise Men, los tres Magos, se llenaron de alegría
