We hope you have found some time to enjoy the summer filled with family and friends.
It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2015-2016 school year. The Hillsborough City
School District is fortunate to be a part of a community that enthusiastically supports
public schools.
Our low class sizes, safe and clean schools, and overall excellence would not be possible
were it not for the fact that we work closely with all of our parents, the Hillsborough
Schools Foundation, the Associated Parent Group, the Town of Hillsborough, the
Hillsborough Police Department, Central County Fire, the Hillsborough Beautification
Foundation, the Hillsborough Garden Club, and many more civic and community
organizations. Our students’ success is something about which we can all be proud.
High academic achievement has always been one of our most important goals, and our

The Hillsborough City School District and the larger community has collaborated on a
visioning process called HCSD Forward to ensure that the District is always innovating.
As part of HCSD Forward, the Board of Trustees approved the five initiatives below. We
have made significant headway on all of these goals, and look forward to continuing our
work this year:
Initiative #1: World Language/World Culture
• Students in our district will develop a perspective and appreciation of multiple world
cultures and will engage with multiple world languages led by high-quality, welltrained staff members.
• Students will learn how to approach multiple cultures and languages, and develop an
understanding and appreciation of the fact that we live in an interconnected global
village.
• As they progress in our system, students will select one world language to learn more
deeply, with an option for students who choose a rigorous course of instruction to
move towards fluency.
Initiative #2: Technology
• Students and staff will utilize technology to enhance learning, to find and assimilate
information, to create content, to demonstrate learning, to practice skills, to express
ideas, and to build solutions.
• Students and staff will create, explore, curate, publish, write, present, edit, film, and
engage with others while effectively utilizing a myriad of different tools, and
exhibiting digital citizenship.
• Our district will continuously invest resources to adapt to new technologies that can
contribute to learning and teaching and provide the infrastructure, training, and support
necessary to ensure success.
Initiative #3: Meeting Specific Needs of Students
Identify and nurture the talents and needs of all students (the gifted, those that have
specific needs, those with various learning styles, etc. Different strategies may need to be
employed for different groups)
Initiative #4: Professional Growth
Create a district wide culture of professional growth and collaboration by implementing a
well-resourced system that leads to improved teaching and learning, spurs innovation,
and encourages life-long learning for all staff members.
Initiative #5: HCSD Culture
Build and encourage a culture of creativity, nimbleness, reasoned experimentation, and
real-world application to prepare learners, both students and adults, for today and the
future.
We invite you to join us in making these initiatives realities for our students.
If at any time you have questions or concerns regarding your child or any aspect of the
school district’s operation, please do not hesitate to give either of us, your principal, or
one of our directors a call. The phrase “open door policy” means something in this
district, and you will find us all to be very accessible and ready to listen. Because faceto-face conversations are always the most effective, we would also like to take this
opportunity to invite you to attend the Superintendent Coffees during the year. These
meetings give you an opportunity to learn more about the district and to ask questions
and make comments. Though you’ll see that the Superintendent Coffees are often held at
specific school sites, you are invited to attend any and all of them. Because
communication is so important, the last page of this letter includes the dates and times for
the Superintendent Coffees, the School Board Meetings, and some quick reference
numbers for your convenience.
School begins on Monday, August 24 for all students. Over the summer, principals and
staff worked diligently to create well-balanced classes. The teams endeavored to match
each child’s learning style with the classroom teacher’s instructional style; the social,
emotional, and academic needs of all students were balanced; and recommendations from
the teachers and requests from parents were conscientiously considered. The final class
assignments were made by each principal after thoughtful reflection about each child.
One of the consequences of having smaller class sizes is that with limited enrollment in
each class, it is not possible to honor all parent requests for classroom placement.
The principals have each prepared a letter that is enclosed in this E-Packet. Please be
sure to read this for more important information, including details about when and how
you will receive information about your child’s class placement or class schedule.
Crocker School’s first bell rings at 8:25 for all students, except for seventh and eighth
graders who have opted to take an A Period. These students attend A Period at 7:15 (first
bell) on the days their class meets (A Period classes are offered every other day).
All elementary schools start at 8:30. Please note that all campuses provide coverage
for students beginning at 8:10. This will allow parents who must drop students off at
multiple schools to be able to complete the trip. Please note that the best way to cut
down the drop off time in the morning is to drop off your child off soon after 8:10. We
appreciate your patience during drop off and pick up times, your adherence to the
procedures and rules at each school, and your dedication to safety for all of our students.
We have added safety and traffic mitigation enhancements at several of our schools this
summer, and we hope that they make a noticeable difference.
In closing, we want to say what an honor it is to serve your children and this exceptional
community. With your continued support and active involvement, we can ensure
continued success for all of our students.

Dear West Families,
I hope you are all having a wonderful summer filled with friends, family, and fun! It’s hard to believe that in
just a few weeks, we’ll all be joining together at West to kick off the 2015-2016 school year. It is an absolute
honor to be joining you this year as principal at West School. I’ve spent the past 12 years in elementary and
middle school working to educate every child, and to support his/her development in becoming a reflective and
resilient life-long learner. I can’t wait to continue this rewarding work with everyone at West.
Please keep an eye out for West World, our school newsletter, which will be sent to you electronically on
approximately the first and fifteenth of each month. West World contains important news and information to
help keep you in the loop with life here at West School.

Dear West School Parents,
July 15, 2015
On behalf of the 2015-2016 West School Parent Group Executive Board (“WPGB”), I’d like to welcome all of our
returning families and new families to West! We are all truly looking forward to the coming year with our new
principal, Matthew Lindner, and anticipate many wonderful times for everyone in our West community.
As we draw closer to the beginning of school, I wanted to be sure that you received the forms and information
you needed for the coming year – all of which are enclosed in this e-packet. Note that this year West
transitioned the payment of your West Parent Dues online through PayPal (see West Parent Dues Form) and
provided you with the option to purchase West Wear for your family through the Student Spirit Wear site. All
of this was done in an effort to reduce paper, make information more readily available to you, and allow
continuity amongst all of the schools in our District. Since these e-documents will not be sent to you by mail,
you may want to save them for your records. Furthermore, please note that you will also receive an HCSD
summer packet that contains important District forms as well as an email from InfoSnap, the data collecting
system the District uses to create our all-school directory. Please note that every family, new and returning, is
required to create an account and register with InfoSnap.
As you know, we at West have an amazing community of kids, parents, teachers, specialists, and staff and the
WPGB wants to make sure you always remain connected and informed about our community. Here are a few
ways you can do that:
• Register for Konstella - The WPGB is excited to announce that for the 2015-2016 school year, West School
will be piloting a new online resource called Konstella. Konstella was developed to assist parents by
consolidating the multiple sites needed today to maintain school involvement into just one site. Konstella
will be the one stop shop for all West School volunteer sign-ups, event organization, and room parent
communication. Please register for Konstella at https://www.konstella.com/cd/m0vWJP so that you don’t
miss important communications or opportunities to volunteer at West School. You can also download the
Konstella app for your phone and access your information any time, anywhere.
• Volunteer at West - West School is fortunate to have such dedicated parent volunteers. Please look for the
many volunteer opportunities we have online at Konstella and consider signing up for at least one activity.
(As noted above, you will need to first register with Konstella before signing up for committees.) Please
contact Ann Lloyd or Sheri Bernstein, VP of Volunteers, with questions at wpgbvpvolunteers@gmail.com.
• Pay your Parent Group Dues – In this packet, you will find the Parent Group Dues Form and a link that
explains how the dues are used. We do not hold fundraising events, so in order to support many of the
amazing activities at West, we need everyone’s participation. Please pay your dues today! Feel free to
contact AJ Gandhi, Treasurer, with any questions about dues at wpgbtreasurer@gmail.com.
• Read West World – The school newsletter is emailed every month. It contains important information about
events and activities at school and in our District.
• Attend Events – At West, we sponsor various events throughout the year. Please join us for the Welcome
Back BBQ, What to Expect Night, Bingo Night, Staff Appreciation Luncheon, and more fun events throughout
the year. HSF also provides many fun-filled events that build community and raise money to support the
District budget, such as the Tennis Classic Luncheon, Dinner Dance, and Fun Run.
• Attend West Parent Group Meetings – Throughout the school year, meetings designed by West staff and
parents provide current information and education to our West parents. Stay tuned for more information
about these meetings.
This year, Monday, August 24th is the first day of school – note that it is a shortened day and school will let
out at 12:00pm for all grades K-5. In addition, on that morning we invite you to join us in the Multi-Purpose
Room (“MPR”) to catch up with friends, enjoy coffee and treats hosted by Phil and Maria Chen with Sybarite
Investments, and hear about upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, as well as the latest District and school
site-related news.

Associated Parent Group 2015-2016
Dear Hillsborough Schools’ Parents,
On behalf of the Associated Parent Group (APG), welcome to the 2015-2016
school year! Whether your summer was spent close to home or on distant
shores, I hope it was filled with family and fun and void of alarm clocks and
schedules. It’s almost time to restock those backpacks with fresh pencils, search
through your drawers for those PE uniforms, and set those alarm clocks. School
will resume on Monday, August 24th.
APG is the representative board of all four Hillsborough schools’ parent groups.
We meet once a month to discuss best practices and issues that affect the
district. The APG e-Packet includes everything you need from your school
parent group to start the school year (important dates, welcome letters, volunteer
information, and parent group dues forms). These pages can also be accessed
via your parent group webpage.
In preparation for this school year, you should have received an email from
HCSD with instructions on how to access the InfoSnap system. Please ensure
that you complete all these online forms before the first day of school. These
forms replace the packet that came in the regular mail in years past. Note that
you will need to complete the summer InfoSnap process by the first day of
school.
Hot Lunch: We are pleased to once again be contracting with Choice Lunch to
provide our hot lunch program. For ordering information, nutritional & allergy
information and to set up an account, please visit http://www.choicelunch.com/.
Please note that not all schools will have the same start date for the hot lunch
program, hot lunch may not be available during the first week of school. The
calendar on the Choice Lunch website will have the start date information for
each school.
One Check Dues Collection: Each school’s parent group board works hard to
reduce expenses while maintaining a high level of programs for families and
school sites. Parent group dues for each school will be collected at the beginning
of the school year and there will be no other parent group related collections.
Your one check payment will include directories, yearbooks, and staff gifts to
make your life a bit easier.
Directories: The school directory will include an alphabetical list of all district
students, as well as class lists for all four schools. Extra directories may be
purchased from each school parent groups while supplies last. Be sure to
update your contact information in InfoSnap as that information will be
included in the directory.
School e-Newsletters: A newsletter will be sent to you by email on
approximately the 1st and 15th of every month from your parent group board. The
newsletter will contain important information and dates for your school, the
district, and the community. The newsletter is a great way to stay connected with
all that is going on within our school community. Newsletter editors make their
best effort to keep the information timely and concise, please refer to those
newsletters often!
Our schools truly are the heart of the Hillsborough community and we are all
looking forward to the 2015-2016 school year. I hope you enjoy the last few days

Dear West School Parents;
Welcome to our 2015-2016 school year! Plans are already underway to continue our
proud tradition of giving our children an exceptional education experience that is
recognized as a California Distinguished School. Many of these enriching experiences
exist because of the Dues collected by the West Parent Group. Here are a few important
points to keep in mind:
I.
Each year these funds are used for a variety of important items to directly benefit
our children’s experience. These are items that are otherwise not funded by the
School District. As an example, dues support many special purchases such as Art
in Action supplies as well as provided support for many important school events.
II.
The West community conducts no school fundraisers other than the traditional
Book Fair and Birthday Book Club for the library. West continues to work
diligently to keep expenses low. Please note that field trips and other items that
are teacher driven are not covered by Parent Group Dues.
III.
These dues enable our parents to focus on volunteer time that directly benefits
our children rather than fundraising. A few examples of the unsung volunteers
are: the emergency and traffic safety crew; library assistants, lunch room and
recess monitors; the volunteers organizing many of the children’s programs and
assemblies such as nutrition & wellness, Character Week, and Career Day.
The West Parent Group Annual Dues for 2015-2016 are $216 per child.1 In
response to parent requests, we are moving to ecommerce this year. Please
visit http://hillsboroughw.corecommerce.com/ to complete registration
and payment by September 10, 2015. This will ensure that you receive a copy of
the All-Schools Directory. Also, with your payment, each of your children at West will
receive a West School Yearbook at the end of the year. West families have participated
at the 100% level for seven years in a row – let’s maintain our excellent level of

JOIN THE WEST SCHOOL
LIBRARY BIRTHDAY CLUB!
One of West Parent Group's most successful programs is the Library Birthday Club.
Our children and library have greatly benefited from the many contributions this
program has generated in the past.
In addition to helping keep our library's inventory of books and materials current, one
of the goals of the Library Birthday Club is to create an awareness of the need to
support our community libraries. It gives our children an early example of the
commitment that must be made in order to keep our library strong. Another goal of
the Library Birthday Club is to encourage our children to enjoy the "gift of giving"
on their birthday, a day often reserved for receiving.
Once your child joins the club, his or her name is posted in our library, and a
book is purchased in his or her honor. The purchased book is displayed in the
library during your child's birthday month, and your child is the first to borrow
the book.
To become a member of the Library Birthday Club, simply complete the
form below and submit it along with a check payable to “West School.”
Completed forms and checks can be dropped inside the envelope marked
“Library Birthday Club” in the West School office.

The Hallmarks of a Hillsborough Education
Dear Families -
Summer 2015
By many measures, Hillsborough public schools consistently rank among the very best in California. This is due in
large part to our community’s unwavering, long-term support of our local school district.
Following the passage of Proposition 13 and the resulting decline in education funding, a group of innovative parents
created a groundbreaking public-private partnership to raise excellence in our schools. Since its founding in 1980, the
Hillsborough Schools Foundation (HSF) has donated over $50 million to our local school district, helping to maintain
the high standards for which our public schools are known.
The Hillsborough Tradition of Excellence Continues!
Thanks to the generous support of our parents, grandparents, alumni, community members, teachers and staff, and
local business partners, HSF announced an allocation of over $3.5 million to the Hillsborough schools this year!
These funds help to provide students with the Hallmarks of a Hillsborough Education: exceptional teachers and
staff, small class sizes, excellence in math and reading, dedicated counselors, and world-class enrichment, including
innovation labs, HTV, world language and culture, band and choral music.
Sustaining Support is Critical for Continued Success!
Maintaining this excellence requires continued collaboration and a significant infusion of private funding each year. To
achieve this, we ask all families to pledge to support HSF with a tax-deductible donation on or before October 28th
(HSF Pledge Day):
 Consider a stretch gift and join the Scholars’ Circle with an individual contribution of $10,000 or more
 Pledge ACE with a gift of $2,300 or more per child to cover the gap between government spending and the additional
Actual Cost to Educate each student
 Contribute to the Annual Campaign with a gift in any amount that is meaningful to your family to help achieve our
goal of 100% participation
We also invite you to invest in your children’s education by supporting the Foundation in the following ways:

Q. How does eScrip work?
A. The eScrip is a fundraiser that allows participating merchants to contribute a
percentage of your grocery loyalty cards, credit card, and debit card
purchases to Hillsborough Schools Foundation (HSF).
Q. Why do I register store loyalty cards and my debit and credit cards?
A. To activate eScrip, you need to register store club/loyalty cards, credit cards
and debit cards that you use. When a credit card expires, just update the new
information. Safeway requires that you renew each year.
Q. Are my information and purchases protected?
A. The eScrip online registration is completely secure, and it is eScrip’s priority to
protect your data. Your information is only used to track purchases with
participating merchants and to send donations to HSF.
Q. Which grocery stores and merchants participate?
A. Draeger’s Market, Mollie Stone’s, Lunardi’s, Safeway, Piazza’s, Food 4 Less,
Vons, Petaluma Market plus many more throughout California.

What other resources are available for my family in the Hillsborough Community?

An on-line community called Hillsborough Together (HT) is available to Hillsborough residents
and families enrolled in Hillsborough schools. We recommend you join HT and then subscribe to an
email group within HT called “Special Kids.” This is the main mail-list Resource Parents use for
distributing information to families interested in opportunities and resources for children with
disabilities.

To join HT, go to hillsboroughtogether.com and click on “JOIN NOW.”

When filling out the on-line application, select “Special Kids” under “List Subscriptions.”
You can choose to have Special Kids email messages delivered individually, in a daily digest, weekly, or
only through the web.
If you are already a member of HT and would like to subscribe to Special Kids, then log into the HT

website and click on “Email Preferences.” Scroll down to “Optional Lists” and click on “Subscribe.”
If you wish to post a message to Special Kids, this can be done in one of two ways.
o The easiest way is to send an email to specialkids@hillsboroughtogether.com; you must send it
from the email account you used to join HT.
o Alternatively, you can go to the HT website and click on “Messages”, then compose your
message in the “Write to List” field. Then from the pull down menu, select “Special Kids” and

Please note: you can join this email list in a way that maintains confidentiality. However, please keep
in mind that when you post to “Special Kids,” it is evident who posted the message.
Another benefit of joining HT is that it will give you access to the HT Directory, where families list
programs or providers on the HT website that they recommend to other HT members. The Resource
Parents have worked with the HT staff to have a dedicated “Special Kids” section of the directory.
To access this part of the Directory, log into the HT website, click on Directory and scroll down the
page until you see “Special Kids” under “Browse by Category”; click on the category for which you are
interested in getting references.

To add a recommendation to the HT Directory, click on “Post a Directory Listing” and follow the
prompts. You can also review an existing directory listing.

The Hillsborough Police Department (HPD) has a registry for children with Special Needs. This
is a completely optional service, but could assist HPD and the Fire Department in more appropriately
helping your family in the event of a medical emergency, fire, etc. If you are interested in registering

At Workshop Education, children acquire critical 21st Century and study skills while building friendships: a play date
with a purpose. Parents pay only for the minutes your child is learning with us, and may email the evening before to
drop in or change the schedule. We offer two types of Workshops daily.
Study Skills Workshops: Credentialed educators teach concrete strategies to tackle homework efficiently, study for
tests, stay organized, and pace long-term projects. These skills are reinforced as children complete homework and
school projects in a 1:10 teacher/student small group setting.
Innovation Workshops: Children learn 21st Century skills that are highly correlated with success ~ the ability to create,
persevere, and communicate effectively. Each day of the week has a different academic focus. Our units of study change
every six weeks.
