2008 Annual Report - Stand for Children Leadership Center
Kris Zook, Gresham Chapter Leader Stand for Children members volunteered over 2,500 hours to give children a voice in the 2008 elections. Below, Oregon’s new Gresham Chapter mobilized 100 volunteers. Right, Massachusetts members made 17,000 phone calls to protect $12 billion in state revenues by defeating Question 1. Senator Edward Augustus, Worcester, Massachusetts Senate Education Vice Chair 2008 “Stand for Children has done an amazing job of organizing grassroots parents and concerned citizens.” Annual Report “If you want to go beyond something that will help your kids to help all kids, if you want to work on the bigger picture for longer term results, you need to get a whole bunch of people together. That’s what Stand for Children does.” What We Stand For Results for All Children Every single child matters, and children’s lives and futures are being shaped right now. That’s why we maximize every day, every dollar, and every person involved in Stand for Children to create a just society where all children get the excellent education and support they need to thrive. Stand for Children Leadership Center is a 501 ( c )( 3 ) charitable organization that develops leaders who use the power of grassroots action to help all children get the excellent public education and support they need to thrive. Stand for Children is a 501 ( c )( 4 ) membership organization that uses the power of grassroots action to help all children get the excellent public education and support they need to thrive. Bold Independence In a political arena dominated by parties and adultfocused special interest groups, we’re non-partisan and child-focused. We fearlessly challenge the status quo in pursuit of solutions that help children thrive. Empowering, Entrepreneurial Leadership We’re relentless in our drive to empower Stand volunteers and staff, and we continually push ourselves to innovate and improve in order to accomplish more and more for children who urgently need our help. Being the Change We Seek We show up. We speak up. We reach out. We vote. Active participation makes our member-driven organization work, and enables us to make our democracy work for children. Direct and Respectful Communication We communicate directly and with respect at all times, which enables us to be transparent, foster learning, and create long-lasting, accountable relationships. In 2008, Stand for Children – Members in Washington State, our newest affiliate, developed a statewide members, with the support policy agenda focused on improving of our generous donors, educator quality, high school graduation standards, learning time, and investment won 11 local and 4 statewide in pre-K–12 education. victories, including an reach out. important education reform, We – Over 1,150 Stand for Children members and leveraged $680,584,322 and volunteers in Oregon conducted personal outreach to nearly 45,000 in public funds that helped voters through 1, 200 phone bank and 1,067,600 children. door-to-door canvass shifts in 12 We show up. By bringing an organized voice to school board meetings and city council hearings, Stand members won: – A $1.6 million increase in city funding for public schools in Worcester, Massachusetts, preventing budget cuts for the first time in 7 years. – Expansion of an alternative discipline program in Nashville, Tennessee that keeps students in school. – Across Oregon: better school nutrition in Lincoln County, an improved kindergarten schedule in Hillsboro, authorization of a construction tax for schools in Canby, and funding for children’s dental health programs in Salem-Keizer and North Clackamas. We speak up. – P arents and teachers in our Portland, Oregon Chapter led a strategic campaign to fix the district’s broken teacher hiring and transfer practices, helping to secure the first positive reforms in more than 20 years. – Massachusetts members joined their voices in coalition with others to close corporate tax loopholes, generating $291 million in additional state revenue in 2009. communities. – M assachusetts members filled over 330 volunteer phone bank shifts, making over 17, 000 calls to help defeat Question 1, which would have repealed the state income tax. – Washington State Stand members logged 4 41 hours at phone banks and canvasses in support of pro-schools legislative candidates, reaching 5,832 voters in five communities. We vote. – M assachusetts voters rejected Question 1 by 70-30 after 45% voted for a similar initiative in 2002. – Voters in three Oregon communities approved $392 million in local funding for school operations in Eugene, school facilities in Salem, and proven prevention and intervention programs for children in Portland. – Stand members in North Clackamas and our newest chapter in Gresham played a decisive role in state legislative races that gave the Oregon House of Representatives a pro-schools super-majority.* * Activities in support of candidates are conducted solely by Stand for Children; Stand for Children Leadership Center does not engage in partisan electoral work and does not support Stand for Children’s candidate campaign activities. “The Gresham Stand for Children Chapter contributed over 100 volunteer shifts and reached out to over 6,100 voters on my behalf. My election to the state legislature could not have been realized without their hard work and dedication. I look forward to working with Stand for Children in the legislature to ensure that all children receive the education they deserve.” * State Representative Greg Matthews www.stand.org Improving Our Communities’ Public Schools Pro-teacher, Pro-student Reforms In 2007, we achieved our first policy breakthrough in the area of teaching effectiveness, leading a coalition to develop a strong new educator mentoring program in Oregon, and winning a $5 million legislative appropriation. As a result, in 2008-09 nearly 1,000 new teachers and principals who work with roughly 75,000 students are supported by carefully selected mentors following a nationally proven curriculum. While Stand for Children members work on a range of issues, public education is a top priority. An excellent education prepares children to become critical thinkers who contribute to healthy families, stronger communities, and a more just democracy. Right now, America’s public education system allows far too many children to fall through the cracks and prevents too many from excelling. –High school graduation rates are alarmingly low – and those who do graduate are often poorly prepared for family-wage jobs or college. –Student achievement reflects deep racial and economic inequities, and U.S. students as a whole lag far behind their peers in many other countries. –Struggling students often don’t get sufficient support, and students at or above grade level don’t get the attention or push they need to excel. Our vision for K-12 public education in America is this: effective, empowered, accountable educators in well-funded, well-run public schools where every child grows, every year. www.stand.org In March 2008, Stand for Children helped achieve the first positive reforms of the teacher hiring and transfer system in Portland Public Schools in more than 20 years. For years, Portland Public Schools relied on forced placement of teachers, resulting in school-teacher mismatches, and high levels of teacher, principal, and parent dissatisfaction. The district hired teachers two to four months later than neighboring districts, resulting in the loss of many good candidates. “Every urban school district in America needs a group like Stand for Children. Stand’s thoughtful approach to education policy, your rigorous organizing methods, and your ability to engage voters in school reform are a unique and powerful combination.” Tim Daly, President, The New Teacher Project Through a strategic public engagement campaign, we convinced the school district and teachers union to reach an agreement that will allow Portland Public Schools – which serves close to 10% of the state’s children – to compete more effectively for teaching candidates and help ensure that every child in Portland has the best teacher possible. Effective Community Engagement – Started with long-held concerns of parents, teachers, and principals, confirmed by data compiled by the New Teacher Project documenting deep flaws in the system – Crafted common-sense reform proposal in dialogue with dozens of teachers, principals, and parents – Met in person with 150 teachers in 43 schools, more than 80% of whom endorsed our proposal – H eld 12 community house parties attended by over 200 people – S ecured editorial support and news coverage – C ollected more than 1,000 signatures endorsing our proposal A Message from Stand’s Chief Executive Officer A Three-Year Strategy for Increased Impact In December 2008, the Boards of Directors of Stand for Children Leadership Center and Stand for Children adopted an ambitious three-year strategic plan to expand our reach and impact. We are living in a time of tremendous suffering and great challenges. And yet we have an opportunity to move our society closer to being the beloved community that Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned. From our nation’s founding, to the Civil War, to the Great Depression, to World War II and its aftermath and then the Civil Rights Movement, peril bred progress – because ordinary Americans stepped up. I. S trengthen existing state affiliates. Stand for Children affiliates in Massachusetts, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington State will increase our impact for children by mobilizing a significantly greater number of citizen advocates to achieve education reforms that research indicates matter most. President Obama and the team he has assembled will lead well. Not perfectly, but well and certainly boldly. But whether this time of great peril becomes an era of vital progress depends as much on whether we step up, as our forebears did, as on President Obama’s leadership. Progress depends on whether we embrace change. Will we embrace long overdue changes in our public schools? Demanding federal but also state and local changes that improve the quality of teaching by paying, supporting, and evaluating teachers like professionals rather than assembly line workers. Demanding changes that give school leaders more resources and autonomy to enable their schools to educate students to high levels based on their specific strengths and challenges. Demanding changes that significantly expand the amount of learning time, particularly in poor performing schools. Progress depends on whether we embrace change as donors, giving more of our money (at a time when we all have less of it) to organizations like Stand for Children that are at the forefront of fighting for key changes, and as taxpayers, insisting elected officials invest more in effective government programs and eliminate programs that don’t work. And finally, progress depends on whether we embrace change as citizen and community leaders, giving more of our time and pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones in order to lead at a higher level. Progress depends on whether each of us is the change we seek. It’s time for each and every one of us to go all out for change, for your community, for your state, and for the nation. No holds barred. No excuses. No fear. If we do, today’s peril can breed tomorrow’s progress, for children, for families, for all of us. Thank you so much for your tremendous support this part year, and thank you for all you’ll do to help Stand for Children take advantage of this rare window of opportunity to achieve progress. Jonah Edelman Chief Executive Officer “I’m so proud to be the Chair of an organization that is boldly independent and results oriented, entrepreneurial and focused on citizen empowerment. Stand for Children is a catalyst for education reforms at a time when our public schools are urgently in need of improvement.” Gun Denhart, Stand for Children Board Chair II. Launch 6 new state affiliates. Stand for Children will add affiliates in six states where: –We can effect important education reforms in the short term –We can build and sustain a strong statewide organization – We have a clear niche III. P osition for federal policy impact. By 2012, Stand will develop the capacity to contribute significantly to strategically selected federal policy improvements and/ or investments. Over the next three years, we’ll develop national relationships and on-line organizing capacity while paying close attention to ways our members can make a difference through federal action. www.stand.org Massachusetts Stand for Children 2009 Priorities MetroWest North North West Central MetroWest South Lexington members Trisha Perez Kennealy, Ann Redmon, and Karen Griffiths en route to join 450 other advocates on Beacon Hill. Championing a bill that would result in the bottom 10% of Tennessee’s teachers and principals not being re-hired after their second year and the bottom 10% to be ineligible for tenure (in the case of teachers) or re-hire (in the case of principals) after their third year without a successful petition.
