There must be truth in that, as the past two years as The Children’s Center Board Chair have flown by. But to be more accurate, the saying might be altered to include that time flies when you spend it with dedicated, compassionate, smart and generous people. The collegial group that comprises the Board of Trustees has made the serious work of overseeing the serious work of The Children’s Center a delight. They are community members who bring their unique talents, knowledge and skills to create a highly competent Board. Additionally, the support given by all the staff of The Children’s Center especially Doug Goldsmith, Karen Hansen, Courtney Garay and Joanne Mooney cannot be overstated. Supporters of The Children’s Center can rest assured that every major decision, every dollar and every policy is scrutinized with professional eyes. Each year, the primary focus of the Board is on the effort to sustain the financial stability of The Children’s Center. As is the case with many non-profit service providers, demand outpaces capacity. This year, the Board examined capacity issues such as waiting list and the on-going commitment to never turn a family away due to their inability to pay. The Board participated in the varied community events that benefitted The Children’s Center programs and services. Additionally, we learned about interfacing with our state legislators and telling The Children’s Center story to the community. We were especially gratified at the State Legislature’s continued support of the services to The Children’s Center families in need. At the end of every fiscal year, Board members complete their terms and new members begin theirs. This year we were pleased to expand Board membership with the addition of of Jenn Barlow, Tina Faust, Nicole Hemingway, John T. Nielsen, Sandra Sweetland, Adria Swindle, Alexandra Von Maack and the return of our former Board member George Hofmann. They each bring new energy and expertise to the Board. We are so grateful for their commitment. 2 Long-time Board member and former Chair, Helen Cardon completed her term in July. Helen has been a hard-working, positive-thinking and very generous member whose vision moved The Children’s Center toward the capital campaign to renovate the Oquirrh School. As Board Chair, she initiated a governance model of active committees that address a broad set of needs for The Children’s Center present and future. She will be missed but we are thrilled that she has agreed to Chair the Jewelry Luncheon in March. Sonja Chesley-EerNisse also completed her term. She has been a long time, valued member of the Board whose fundraising knowledge and personal generosity are forever appreciated. We are delighted that she will remain active on the Gala committee. So, we happily say “so long” not “good-bye” to both Helen and Sonja. To all The Children’s Center Board members, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all your hours of service, your energy and expertise. In the two years as Board Chair, not a single request to chair a committee, complete a task or a special assignment was ever denied. Such a group truly makes the work light and the time fly. Thank you all. Nancy Hogarty Baker, Chair 3 FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR It was a beautiful fall day last September. The leaves were gently falling on the playground and you could hear the children’s squeals of delight as they jumped into the large piles of golden hues. The clinical team had just finished meeting where we reviewed 25 new referrals from parents desperate for our help. I walked into my office and, as usual, the red light on my telephone signaled that there was a message waiting for me. As I entered my password I allowed myself to wonder, for a second or two, whether this might be the phone call we had been waiting for! A female voice identified herself as Leslie Durham, the Field Representative from Congressman Matheson’s office and she indicated that I needed to contact her as soon as possible. I quickly dialed her number and was thankful to be put right through! She enthusiastically extended her congratulations on behalf of Congressman Matheson for The Children’s Center’s award of a $1.6 million trauma grant from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration! It is difficult to convey how ecstatic we were to receive that phone call! Out of 50 grantees, only 25 were for agencies, like us, who were already recipients of a trauma grant. As a partner of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network we had already seen how our federal grant had transformed us as an agency. The staff training and access to national partners for consultation has enabled us to become a nationally recognized center for the treatment of very young children who have suffered from traumatic stress. Our new, 4 year grant, will allow us to continue to develop our staff training as we strive to find new ways to treat families whose preschool aged children have been subjected to physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, traumatic grief, or who have witnessed unimaginable levels of domestic violence. As well, our new grant cycle takes our expertise into 4 the community where we are working with Primary Children’s Medical Center’s Safe and Healthy Families, the YWCA, DCFS, South Main Clinic, military families, and refugee families. We will be collaborating with our partners to increase trauma screening for children to ensure that they are able to access critically needed trauma treatment. Every week we witness children who, because of our evidence based treatment strategies, are able to lead happier lives unencumbered by the traumatic stress that they endured. Their families report less anxiety, less aggression, and fewer tantrums as a result of treatment. They are now able to enjoy time together and are less worried about the long term impact of the trauma on the child’s life. For 50 years we have shaped and created our services to keep pace with the growing demands of families in our community. Children who have suffered from trauma, children coping with autism spectrum disorders, children who are unable to succeed in a regular preschool or daycare are all receiving treatment that allows them to lead happier, more successful lives. We are, of course, forever thankful to our Board of Trustees for their continued outstanding support and oversight. And to you, our donors, for it is your support that allows us to continue to grow and provide critically needed mental health care to our families. We hope that you gain great satisfaction in the knowledge that our successes are yours as well. Douglas Goldsmith, Ph.D. Executive Director 5 THERAPEUTIC PRESCHOOL This year, 330 children with behavioral and emotional problems were part of the Therapeutic Preschool program where they received 15 hours of therapy throughout the week for an average of nine months. Through the care and support the Therapeutic Preschool Specialists provide, children learn to recognize and organize emotions, manage behavior and build successful peer relationships. Both staff and volunteers work with children side by side to teach them how to properly interact amongst each other, and build positive relationships with adults. Over 60% of the children in this program have experienced, on average, three traumatic experiences in their brief lives. The staff is specially trained to provide nurturing interactions to help the children reestablish trust in adults. They help the children learn to identify their feelings and, more importantly, 6 to verbalize their feelings in order to protect themselves and gain skills in emotion regulation. The Therapeutic Preschool Program embodies the joy of childhood through everything it accomplishes. During the three-hour-session, children learn about various subjects through interactive games and activities. Daily art therapy allows them to express their creative and unique ideas through experiential art projects. The art is often on display around The Center, and the children take pride in their work weeks after they completed it. 80% of the children who complete the Therapeutic Preschool program recover from trauma and behavioral problems, and are able to successfully transition to typical daycares, preschools, and regular kindergarten programs when they graduate. Access to this valuable program is made possible by the generosity of individuals, businesses and foundations in the community. Without charitable donations, families would spend $1,000 a month for an average of nine months for this intensive therapy. Over 98% of the families are able to qualify for charitable support enabling their child to receive the critical care needed to enjoy a successful childhood. But the impact of the trauma also affects the entire family. The Children’s Center was delighted to receive our second $1.6 million grant from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA); a branch of the Federal Government. We were one of only 25 other mental health agencies across the nation to have our grant renewed! The Children’s Center Trauma Program for Families with Young Children will allow us to continue to work as a partner with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network to build our state of the art trauma care for children and families who seek our services. In addition we are working with a number of community agencies to help them screen and identify children who are suffering from a traumatic experience. Our staff recently helped a little boy who had been in a severe car accident. Months afterwards his mother called saying that he was extremely aggressive, was unable to sleep, and refused to listen to her at home. During treatment she was stunned to hear that his behaviors were a direct result of the traumatic event. This family received evidence based trauma treatment; Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TFCBT). His mother recently told us that, “It feels like I have my little boy back. We’re getting along better than ever and all of his aggression and defiance seems to have gone away.” When a child is no longer seeing the world as a dangerous, unfriendly place, life can once again be as joyful as it should be for every child. 8 THE CHILDREN’S CENTER OFFERS UNIQUE SERVICES FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER When a child receives an autism diagnosis the families find themselves overwhelmed with an array of services that focus on helping the child build critically needed developmental skills. But the parents find themselves equally frustrated by the lack of services available that effectively teach them how to help their child at home. Lori Krasny, M.S., CC-SLP, our Autism Program Director, has introduced a unique parent-child group treatment P.L.A.Y.®2Learn. Based on the principles of the P.L.A.Y. Project® this cost effective format helps parents learn to enjoy playful interactions with their child. P.L.A.Y.®2Learn is the only program of its kind available in the state of Utah, and the impact on families has proven it to be successful. Lori constantly receives feedback from delighted parents who have recaptured the joy in their relationship. One mother stated, “…even after the first week, my attitude about my child’s diagnosis completely changed, and I was finally able to let a lot of my worries, anger and frustration go. Lori painted a whole new picture for me”. Lori believes that teaching parents to truly understand and be responsive to their child’s needs is just as important as teaching children to gain the tools to interact with the outside world. This year, more than 160 families received the support that will allow them to bring the joy of childhood back into their relationship with their own child. Lori’s unique Social Skills Groups continue to be under high demand for families. These groups help children learn to navigate the complex world of peer relationships. Over 180 children participated again this year and gained the skills necessary to help them develop the joy of making a new friend. 9 STRENGTHENING FAMILIES COPING RESOURCES (SFCR) As part of our Trauma Program for Families with Young Children, we are collaborating with the YWCA’s emergency shelter and other community partners to provide critically needed treatment for families suffering from the experience of domestic violence. When a family’s structure and harmony is disrupted due to domestic violence, it is critical that the family learn how to bring back a sense of peace and safety. Strengthening Families Coping Resources is a new 10-week family therapy program that helps families heal from trauma by helping them re-establish their core structure, identify support systems and find new coping mechanisms. “We came for help because during this time of change we needed emotional support and aid in getting focused again,” says one of the mothers 10 attending family therapy with her children. Each therapy session begins with a nutritious dinner generously donated by Harmon’s. Kami Chambers, the clinician who leads the group, highlights the importance of families learning to have dinner together saying, “This particular component of the families’ treatment is designed to help them learn to create new routines, and promotes the creation of positive family traditions.” Clinicians encourage families to listen to each other, and talk about the positive experiences they had during the day. During treatment the families engage in conversation about their own experiences of violence and abuse. As they hear each other’s stories, they learn they are not alone. As Kami stated, “it is important for families to have a safe and pleasant atmosphere to talk about their situation. It was amazing to see them learn to trust each other and learn to laugh again over the course of the group.” COMMUNITY AWARDS FROM THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS Every year, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints recognizes some of the most impactful agencies in the valley advocating for children. This year, The Children’s Center was honored for providing essential mental health services to families with young children. We deeply appreciate The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for such a distinguished recognition, and for the outstanding support it continually provides us throughout the year. During winter, hundreds of women gather at the BYU Women’s Conference to put together hundreds of care kits filled with personal care essentials and school supplies to support our children and their siblings. Towards the end of summer, dozens of United Way Day of Caring volunteers put together a children’s carnival that brings back the joy and excitement that so many children are missing in their lives. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints also does a wonderful job donating food supplies to help feed children attending the Therapeutic Preschool and provide access to services by funding low to moderate income families. Our deepest gratitude to all the members that through in-kind donations, volunteerism or monetary contributions, kindly support The Children’s Center. FROM THE US COMMERCE ASSOCIATION The Children’s Center was also selected by the US Commerce Association for the Salt Lake and Kearns Awards in the Mental Health Service classification. We are proud to have been chosen for the sixth time as a leading organization providing services and support to families with young children struggling with emotional and behavioral problems. We would like to thank our staff who so passionately dedicate themselves to helping families and children overcome the myriad of challenges and traumas our families face. To our donors, sponsors and volunteers, thank you for believing in our mission; nothing could be done without your support. 11 VOLUNTEERS DONATE OVER 16,000 HOURS TO IMPROVE CHILDREN ’S LIVES Over 500 volunteers provided critically needed support this year to multiple programs at The Center. In order to help ensure that families can take advantage of our afterschool social skills groups they helped by providing free childcare for siblings of the children attending groups. More than 40 volunteers helped us set up and provide support at our Annual Benefit Gala. The largest percentage of volunteers once again provided a helping hand by playing with the children attending our Therapeutic Preschool program. Their help is essential as they allow the Therapeutic Preschool Specialists to focus their time on children who are having a difficult time playing with their peers or following directions. Michael Park described his first day of volunteering in the Therapeutic Preschool saying, “My first class with the children was a bit overwhelming; everything was new to me! Jumping into the world of child therapy was a totally new experience.” Michael focused on simply enjoying his play with the children. Soon, he realized that playtime was not only a moment for fun, but a moment for emotional healing and behavioral 12 transformation. “With time, and through playtime I developed a personal relationship with each and every one of the children, that’s when I realized I had a huge impact in their lives.” Our deepest appreciation goes out to our volunteers whose support of The Children’s Center at all levels is essential. Without their help we simply could not accomplish all that we do for families at The Center. Through their generous donation of time, they help our children recapture the joy of childhood.
