MountainStar strengthening families to keep children safe 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT UPDATE FROM MOUNTAINSTAR WHAT ARE ACEs? LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The other day I found myself wondering what would be possible if a computer programmer could write 700 lines of code per second…selfdriving cars, 3-D home movies, a better and more connected world? The unleashing of such Adverse Childhood Experiences The term “Adverse Childhood Experiences” or ACEs refers to traumatic experiences such as physical, sexual and verbal abuse; physical and emotional neglect; having a family member with mental illness, addiction issues or in prison; witnessing domestic violence; and losing a parent to separation, divorce or death. Research by CDC-Kaiser-Permanente documented the number of ACEs was strongly correlated with high-risk health behaviors such as smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, promiscuity, and severe obesity, and correlated with ill-health including depression, heart disease, cancer, chronic lung disease and shortened lifespan. MountainStar is here to support families and intervene on behalf of children living with ACEs. We are aligned with a state-wide effort to build protective factors for individuals, communities and families that can reduce the risk of ACEs. How Many ACEs do Oregonians experience? tremendous “fire power” is exactly what happens in a child’s brain during early childhood: 700 new neural connections are established every second. Children are biologically wired to develop as long as they have the right building blocks to support them – good nutrition, TIM RUSK EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR responsive caretaking, encouragement and emotional warmth/love. The challenge is that for some children in Central Oregon, these building blocks that support healthy development are not a given. Instead, these little ones live with intense family stress, distracted or absent parents, and exposure to unsafe situations or people. The daily rhythm of their lives is punctuated by continual crisis. It has been scientifically documented that trauma, or “adverse childhood experiences,” have a profound negative effect on a person’s physical and mental health and increases the likelihood that they will experience lifelong problematic health-issues. With your partnership over the past year, we’ve taken a big step forward in ensuring that children living in such compromised circumstances are supported in reaching their early and future potential! With the introduction of Relief Nursery services in Prineville we are now a tri-county program, we are partnering with DHS to help reunite children in foster care with their families, and we are ensuring that the babies and toddlers we work with are getting regular Well Child Visits with a doctor. I hope you will look over the accomplishments documented in this year’s annual report, meet some of our children, and see how you have helped us to succeed! 18% 36% 10% Tim Rusk Executive Director MountainStar 13% 24% strengthening families to keep children safe 36% – ACEs: 0 10% – ACEs: 3 24% – ACEs: 1 18% – ACEs: 4+ 13% – ACEs: 2 2 | MOUNTAINSTAR FAMILY RELIEF NURSERY | 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT | MTSTAR.ORG FISCAL YEAR 2014-2015 OVERVIEW 2014-2015 MILESTONES FINANCIALS NUMBERS SERVED FY 14-15 INCOME - $1.4M • Total children served: 293 (Deschutes County 179, Jefferson County 95, Crook County 19) • Total clients served: 675 children and family members 25% 26% RISK FACTORS • 90% of children in our therapeutic classroom program came from families 12% 31% living at or below the federal poverty level • 87% of families self-identified as extremely stressed 6% • 71% of parents and 41% of children were dealing with mental health issues 26% Private Donations • 24% of families met the federal definition for homeless 12% Private Foundations 6% In-Kind OUTCOMES 31% Government • 100% of children were screened to assess their communication, motor skills, problem 25% DHS/Child Welfare solving and social/emotional development • 98% of children enrolled in our program remained free from confirmed cases of abuse and neglect • 74% of families showed improvement in parenting skills and family functioning • 25% of Enhanced Visitation Service Program families were reunified EXPENSE BREAKOUT 15% 5% 80% 80% Direct Program Costs 5% Administration 15% Fund Raising MTSTAR.ORG | 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT | MOUNTAINSTAR FAMILY RELIEF NURSERY | 3 TEAM SPOTLIGHT ENHANCED VISITATION SERVICES “Tony” and “Celia” are two teenagers who like loud music on the bi-weekly drive from their foster parent’s home in Redmond to our Visitation Center in Bend where they can see their parents. In the beginning, their dad was so angry and frustrated that his children were removed by Child Welfare that he resisted engaging in our services. After a couple visits, he began to see that staff could provide support for his efforts to maintain his sobriety, find work and housing and repair relationships with his partner and children. Both parents took to heart the lessons in our parenting education curriculum and addressed the issues in their reunification plan. Now the teenagers are back home with their parents and doing well. FAIRY GODMOTHER FEATURE Once upon a time, a woman went to a MountainStar luncheon and was deeply moved by our mission to help families in crisis. She thought “wouldn’t it be nice if each child had a fairy godmother who could help once in a while?” That was 8 years ago and the beginning of the Fairy Godmother Program! The Fairy Godmother program is open to anyone who would like to give in a personal way. They help families by fulfilling unmet needs like buying a winter coat or providing treats like toys, books or holiday presents. Our goal is for every child in our therapeutic classes to have a Fairy Godmother. There are children without a match right now in Madras, Prineville, and Bend. You can submit your request to be a Fairy Godmother (or Father!) at mtstar.org within the Take Action tab, where you will find other information about how to get involved. ENHANCED VISITATION SERVICES MountainStar’s Enhanced Visitation program helps families after children have been placed in foster care. Parents who no longer have custody are able to spend quality time with their children in a safe, supervised, home-like environment at our visitation centers in Bend, Madras, and Prineville. During visits, families cook and share meals, read together, and more. Our staff work with children 0-18 and their parents to strengthen relationships that have been affected by abuse, neglect and separation. Our highly trained staff help parents address problems preventing them from earning back custody, while also teaching positive parenting practices that include positive discipline, nurturing touch, responding with sensitivity, consistent loving care, and how to achieve balance in their personal and family life. This important program is fully funded through a contract with the Department of Human Services. Participating families are referred through Child Welfare, with the goal of reaching a rapid and safe reunification. 4 | MOUNTAINSTAR FAMILY RELIEF NURSERY | 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT | MTSTAR.ORG PARTNER HIGHLIGHTS BIRDIES 4 BABIES “CORY” IN MADRAS ™ We are thrilled to announce that our 2015 Birdies 4 Babies event raised more than $90,000 and included contributions from golf clubs and businesses throughout Central Oregon! Held at the beautiful Broken Top Club on August 28th, over 170 participants and businesses generously supported the Birdies 4 Babies golfing fundraiser, including Chevrolet of Bend who was the STAR event sponsor. All proceeds support MountainStar’s family-focused child abuse/neglect prevention program that strengthens families living with high-stress and crisis. Some of the funds have been used to purchase a new Baby Mobile (pictured) that will be used to transport babies and toddlers to our therapeutic early childhood classes. Tremendous thanks to everyone involved and special thanks to: Chevrolet of Bend – STAR event sponsor ($10K) Broken Top Club for providing a beautiful venue Volunteer Planning Team – Kathy Murch, Susan and Werner Zehnder & Virginia De Kat The STAR Team at Crosswater who have held the event for last 10 years 2015 CHILDREN’S EXPEDITION LUNCHEON Tuesday, October 6th from 12:00 to 1:00 pm Riverhouse Convention Center You’re invited to attend our free educational luncheon! RSVP at mtstar.org/luncheon.html (or call 541-322-6820). Also, please share in our appreciation of these local businesses that Loud noises, lots of people, and different textures touching his skin — these things bother little “Cory” more than most kids. When Cory started attending our therapeutic early childhood classes, he wore ear muffs and a tight vest to help him feel more secure. His parents were doing their best but things were quickly going from bad to worse. Staff gently introduced Cory to new experiences like finger painting and building with sand, and they provided support to his parents during home visits. Now, two years later, Cory sheds his ear muffs and vest once he arrives at MountainStar to join in the fun on the playground. He is slowly learning how to handle new experiences and is better prepared to succeed in school. are generously sponsoring this year’s event: Title Sponsor: Silver Sponsors: Bronze Sponsor: In-Kind Sponsors: Pahlisch Homes BigFoot Beverages, BendBroadband, Merkle RKG Robin & Troy Bailey, Lumbermens Insurance Riverhouse Convention Center Supporters in Jefferson County raised a record-breaking $25,000 at our Madras Luncheon in April! MTSTAR.ORG | 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT | MOUNTAINSTAR FAMILY RELIEF NURSERY | 5 COMMUNITY SUPPORT “JACK” IN PRINEVILLE This one-year old boy’s family is plagued by deep poverty. Stress is constantly high as his parents seek to meet their family’s basic needs. When Jack started attending MountainStar, he would tantrum and cry the entire class. One day, his teacher took him outside to the lawn recently installed by Rotary Club of Crook County and Prineville Lions Club. As soon as Jack felt the grass beneath his small hands and knees, he stopped crying to the relief of everyone. That day Jack learned that his teacher can help when he is feeling distressed and out of control. This is a big step toward developing the resiliency he needs to handle his family’s situation and, ultimately, succeed in school. Three-year old Lucy is a strongwilled little girl with severe dental problems and no health insurance. Lucy’s developmentally disabled parents struggle to make ends meet and were at a loss for navigating the health care system. Our team helped her parents sign-up for insurance, call and set up a dental visit and get Lucy to her appointments. MountainStar was there every step of the way helping Lucy’s parents learn how to care for their daughter and ensure her health and safety.
