WHERE INTEGRITY, PASSION, HERITAGE AND FRIENDSHIP MEET DECEMBER 2008 HOOFPRINTS WE DID IT! IPHF National Show Enjoyed By All The Jacksonville Equestrian Center was the stage for the first International Paso Horse Federation United States Championship show on November 7-9, 2008. The event drew more than two hundred thirty of the top Paso show horses in the United States and included many national and international champions. The Federation’s kickoff event featured several new concepts designed to appeal to the exhibitors and spectators while introducing the Paso horse to a whole new market. These features included: • A streamlined schedule of pleasure, performance, fino, troche, and trote/galope classes. • Internationally recognized and respected judges who explained their placements to the spectators. • The introduction of the five judge non-conferring system which threw out the high and low scores and picked the winner by combining the three remaining scores. • A high definition 10x12 LCD screen that posted the judges’ placements after each class. • A beautifully decorated arena that featured two extra long sounding boards bordering a set serpentine pattern. This innovative serpentine design was created by strategic placement of landscaped islands that allowed the horses to maneuver through the pattern. • Exciting entertainment highlighted by Tommie Turvey’s Roman Riding fire jump. • A set schedule beginning at 6:00 on Friday and Saturday evenings that featured fan favorite performance and fino classes. • Gilberto de Paz and the Tropix -- a great Latin band playing until midnight in the pavilion. DaVinci de los Reyes Returns To Champions Circle The IPHF Championship show marked the triumphant return of Davinci de los Reyes to the show ring after a year long absence. Davinci, the PFHA three year old national champion in 2006, is now being managed and trained by Alvin Perez, and was flawless as he completed the initial qualifying round and then moved on to the individual tests. WHERE INTEGRITY, PASSION, HERITAGE AND FRIENDSHIP MEET DECEMBER 2008 “Riding For Sebastian” Trail Ride Cements Bond Between IPHF and Ferrero Foundation Trainers Entertain Sold out Noche de Gala Crowd Three events for IPHF in fourteen days......no problem! Thanks to the efforts of Shiela Conde and super trainers Julito Garcia, David Castro, Alonso Betancur, Jaime Suarez, Alberto Sierra, Javier Suarez, Jose Ochoa, Josi Nieves, and Gustavo gave the attendees at the Noche de Gala an exhibition that left them asking for more. Originally scheduled for twenty minutes, the presentation lasted for almost an hour as the seven hundred spectators stopped riders to learn about the breed and complement the horses on their fantastic performance. Javier Suarez began the evening on a trot-galope stallion. During his break from announcing duties, Carlos Tobon climbed aboard, borrowed a hat, and continued to amaze the crowd as the stallion continued his flawless performance. “The Paso horses stole the show. It was a thrilling presentation and set the stage for a funfilled evening for our guests. People know now what drew all of us to these horses,” said Horst Ferrero, Foundation founder. Sebastian Ferrero’s young life was tragically cut short by medical negligence. After his death, his parents, IPHF members Horst and Luisa Ferrero, created the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation to advocate and fundraise for a full-service, state-of-the-art children’s hospital in Gainesville, Florida and to promote excellence in patient safety. In thirteen short months, the Foundation has created a nationally recognized safety program and has helped to raise awareness for the need of a children’s hospital in North Central Florida. IPHF has partnered with the Foundation to help the Ferreros accomplish this mission. “As I walked down the aisle in my barn to get on my horse for the trail ride, I remembered the last time I saw Sebastian,” said IPHF President Marcia Davis. “He was running down the hill on the side of the barn, laughing and chasing my Goddaughter, Isabela. Two days later he was gone. Sebastian was only three but he taught us all a lot. He lived with joy -- we should too.” A light rain did not dampen the spirits (or the fun) of the seventy plus riders who set out on the five mile ride. About two thirds of the way through the ride, the group stopped for pizza donated by Gator Dominos of Gainesville. Upon the return to the farm, riders were serenaded by Gilberto de Paz and the Tropix, a local Latin band. The riders enjoyed a delicious barbecue dinner and a chance to socialize with friends. IPHF members participating in the ride donated more than $1500.00 to the foundation. Just as important, it gave federation and foundation members an opportunity to meet and form new friendships. “Helping the foundation helps our children and our grandchildren---it’s the right thing to do,” said IPHF treasurer Tony Coleman. Jose Ochoa and David Lopez enjoy the pizza break during the November 15th IPHF Riding for Sebastian Trail Ride. WWW.INTERNATIONALPASOHORSEFEDERATION.ORG Happy Holiday Trails Scenes from the “Ride for Sebastian” It is our sincere wish that your holiday season be filled with family, friends, fun, faith, and .......Fino. Your IPHF Leadership Team Leona Osterhaus, Tres Martin, and Dr. Davila enjoy the ride. Jose Ochoa and Alonso Betancur prepare to entertain the crowd at the Noche de Gala event. Story on page 4. DYNAMIC DIAGONAL DEBUT AT IPHF NATIONALS Interest Grows for Diagonal Paso Horses in the USA by Becky Anderson, Criadero Hidalgo, LLC The debut of the IPHF United States National Championship competition reaffirmed the increasing passion for the diagonally gaited modalities of Trote y Galope, Trocha y Galope and Trocha Pura Paso horses in this country. The quality of the horses competing was impressive with all of the professionally shown Diagonals taking home first place US National Champion titles. While the total number of entries was small, quality was high. More mares would certainly have been shown except many are either “in foal” or have recently foaled, further evidence of a renewed investment and commitment to the Diagonal Paso horses in North America. IPHF US National Champion titles went to: *Trote y Galope mare, La Llave de La Luisa, owned by Dr. Jose Davila and ridden by Jaime Franco *Trote y Galope stallion, Emperador, owned by Criadero Hidalgo, LLC and ridden by Diego Bravo *Trocha Pura stallion, Boreas GL, owned by Lee Vulgaris and ridden by Jose Ochoa Interest in the Diagonal Paso horses was reignited with Confepaso’s 8th La Copa Mundial competition held in the USA in 2007. Again, the total number of diagonally gaited horses was limited, however, the quality was outstanding. Multiple horses earned their Grand and Reserve Grand World Champion or World Champion titles. The horses listed are either in the USA or have sired offspring in the USA. Confepaso 8Th La Copa Mundial titled horses: *Grand World Champion Trote y Galope Stallion, Arafat del Punto, F.C. *Reserve Grand World Champion Trote y Galope Stallion, Don Pepe *Reserve World Champion Trote y Galope Stallion, Cantinero de La Almeria *Reserve World Champion Trote y Galope Stallion, Andariego de La Jota *Reserve World Champion Trocha Pura Mare, Chapolera de La Victoria *Third World Champion Trocha Pura Mare, Serpentina del Patio *Third World Champion Trote y Galope Stallion, Sucesor de Soberbio *Third World Champion Trote Y Galope Stallion, Abad de La Luisa This “new wave” of enthusiasm for the Diagonal Paso horses is only possible due to the influence of the Diagonals who paved the way years ago and are becoming part of our USA Diagonal Paso horse history. The names include: Twice Grand World Champion Soberbio de La Luisa, Grand World Champion Antanus Mockus, Kotopaxi and El Feo de Tupac. Other Diagonal horses making a name for themselves in the show rings as well as contributing to the next generation of Diagonal Paso horses include: Gaitero de La Luisa, Papillon, Embajador de OSEA, Bolero, Aliada de La Luisa, Cobra de Gran Dinastia, Cali del Caribe, Duquesa de La Bonanza, Diva, Pilsen and Sonora Matancera. Diego Bravo excites the crowd as he presents the Colombian colors aboard Champion Trote & Galope stallion, Emperador, owned by Criadero Hidalgo. Below: Mundial winner Debbie Wolkowicz shines as she takes the sounding board on Bolero. Thanks Tres and Jacky!
