oranges. Perhaps it’s the definitive sign of children getting older as they
face a new grade and new challenges. Maybe it’s the memories of a carefree
summer, as we bundle up to keep the reality of a breezy chill at bay. Most
likely, it’s all the yard work that needs to be done.
Whatever it is, I look out my window at leaves falling and find myself
heaving endless sighs – more so as I get older. Both my children were
born in fall, so for me, I suppose this season marks the anniversary of
the awakening that one has when they look into their baby’s eyes for the
first time.
Each fall, I see less “baby” in those eyes and I realize just how quickly
time passes. I know that one autumn, sooner than I’d like, I’ll be saying
good-bye as they go off to college.
As that time goes by, I often look around my home and recognize just
how much it’s changed with those children. I remember bringing those
babies home to a newly decorated nursery, children crawling around a
family room filled with clutter and baby gates everywhere. I recall the first
night in their “big girl beds,” bathtubs filled more with toys than water
and bright pink potty seats sitting atop the toilet bowls. Every year, I feel
like we lose a bit of the chaos of having young children; our home becomes
more organized and looks like how we intended it to look. But somehow,
I’d give anything to go back to that
messy chaos once again.
It always amazes me that even
though the signs of children are
fewer and fewer each day, my home
still provokes sharp memories. And
really, that’s what home is about;
we may change the paint or the
furniture, but the memories that
fill it are eternal. For me, there’s no
better time to reflect on those than
the fall.
This season, I hope you find some
time to flip through this magazine and perhaps find some inspiration for
your own home and its re-birth. Both of the homes we feature this issue
(page 26 and page 38) were created because of families that were growing
and changing.
We hope you’ll see something in this issue that reminds you of special
times or special people. Maybe it will just cause you to pause and reflect
on your own space and what it means to you.
Enjoy,

Ground

AFTER
BEFORE
ncommon as it may seem, Fall is the
best time to start laying the groundwork for
your dream backyard. Wait ‘til Spring to hire
a landscape designer and you’ll find most
already knee-deep in the construction phase
(pre-planned in fall and winter), prices go up
in response to demand and you’ll now have to
wait it out a year to enjoy your new backyard
paradise. Before you rush out and hire a
company this fall however, a few things to
keep in mind …
Hire a Professional
Letters behind the name on a business card
mean something … check for them when
a prospect hands you their card. They equal
education and formal training.
How does Uncommon Ground measure
up: Company principal, Gary Van Eijk, is a
graduate of Landscape Architecture from
Ryerson. Following graduation, Gary spent
time in Italy studying classical design. Every
member of the Uncommon Ground Design
Group has professional training. The company
is a member of Landscape Ontario and the
Ontario Association of Landscape Architects.
Experience Counts!
On average, people spend from 5% to
20% of their home’s value on landscape
architecture. Before committing to a company
it’s important to investigate reputation.
Once implemented, bad design and shoddy
construction are difficult (and very expensive,
if not impossible!) to fix.
How does Uncommon Ground measure
up: Gary has been in the industry almost
fifteen years accruing an outstanding
portfolio of happy clients across the GTA
and surrounding areas as far north as
The Kawarthas. Uncommon Ground has a
“concentric circle” of trusted contractors,
trades people and suppliers.
The Process should be Comfortable,
Creative, Exciting, but with a Heavy
Dose of Practicality!
When interviewing a landscape designer
(and interview more than one!) ask yourself:
Am I comfortable with this person? Does this
person listen? Does the company’s design
style resonate with me? If your dream is to
recreate an English estate garden, a designer
specializing in Zen gardens may not be your
cup of tea. And it’s not enough just to listen.
The company must be equipped to handle the
nitty gritty, particularly when the job involves
creating outdoor structures and walkways.
Make sure the company has more than a
passing familiarity with municipal bylaws
(which change regularly), building codes, the
permit process, etc. And then there are the
hard design questions: drainage correction,
appropriate materials. Ask for references.
Always!
How does Uncommon Ground measure
up: Despite the play on words in our company
name, there is nothing more important to
us than establishing common ground with a
client. Our mandate is to balance creativity
with practicality. We envision your yard in
every season. We take into account your
lifestyle: kids, pets, entertaining needs, future
wish list and we work with the schematic of a
ten-year plan, prioritizing elements to fit your
current budget while planning for the future.
That outdoor kitchen you want may not be
in the budget now, but … we’ll include it in
the plan for a few years from now! We can
substitute materials to meet your budget
without taking away from the quality, look
and feel of your outdoor paradise.
We also offer a variety of references to reflect
our wide body of work. We take prospective
clients to see the work we’ve done and not
just recently. We visit jobs we completed
five, even ten years ago. Fast forward ten
years and a good design should look
even better, painted as it is with the
softening effects of time. Before and
after pictures … every professional
keeps records … ask to see them.
Uncommon Ground has lots!

As you transition from barbecue to Thanksgiving turkey, think about a few easy

GET YOUR
HOME OFFICE
WORKING
FOR YOU
S T O R Y & I L L U S T R AT I O N S
BY CINDY BROWN
The office and the home used to be two utterly distinct, distant environments. Then came the
computer, enabling the two to become one entity. Now we can connect with the world – and
with work – without having to leave the comfort of home.
As a result, the option
of working from home is
growing and an increasing
number of people are adding
a home office to their living
space. But a good home
workplace is not as simple
as just plopping a laptop
on your kitchen table. If
you’re thinking of working
from home, it’s important
to plan and design an office
that works for you.
Ideally, your workspace
should have a window and measure at least 10’ x 10’. It needs to be
comfortable, attractive and, above all, functional. Your office should
be quiet and away from the main flow of household traffic. If you can’t
dedicate an entire room for your office, establish a separation between
living and working in a shared space. Keep in mind the minimum
requirements for an efficient workspace: a desk, easily accessible shelves,
a filing cabinet, good lighting and a comfortable chair. If you will be seated
at a desk for long hours, buy the best office chair you can afford. Your body
will thank you for it.
To begin planning your office, identify all the activities that will occur
in that space. There are many questions you need to ask yourself in order to
fully understand how your office needs to function for optimal productivity.
For example, will you be bringing in clients? If so, you’ll need guest seating
and you may want to consider a separate entrance. Will your office be shared
with another family member? What will your daily routine be like?
Once you’ve established how your office will be used, draw your room
22
o u r h o m e s
OH_Mississauga_Fall2010w_ads.indd 22
f a l l
on a piece of 1/4” graph paper scaling 1 to 2 feet for each 1/4”. Next, measure
your furniture, scale it on the paper, and start arranging various layouts.
If the space allows, try placing your desk on an angle for dynamic appeal,
and keep your computer screen positioned away from a window to avoid
any glare. Your back should not be facing a door, as this can cause a sense
of uneasiness. (See example plan above.)
When you have found an arrangement that works for you, start
thinking about décor. Try not to think too corporate, as this is an extension
of your home and it should tie into the rest of your house through colour
and furnishings. If your space doubles as a living room or guest room, a
chest of drawers can be used for storage and an armoire can house your
computer, which can be closed off when not in use. Rather than traditional
metal filing cabinets, consider using baskets to store papers. Make sure to
devote shelf space to objects you enjoy looking at, such as family photos or
treasured items, as this will create a more enjoyable working environment.
If you don’t have all the space you need, think of ways to use your pieces
for more than one purpose. For example, small, moveable filing cabinets
can double as seating when cushions are secured on top.
The next step is to identify a focal point, something that immediately
draws attention to your eye as you walk into the room. If your space lacks
architectural interest, use your desk or a piece of art. Remember, if your
room is small, choose a desk that’s open underneath to make the room
appear as large as possible.
Finally, keep in mind that long hours in an unnatural environment can
be hazardous to your health. Make sure the room is properly ventilated, as
electrical equipment can cause indoor pollution. As shown in the following
drawing, bring in nature through photographs, the use of natural materials
and adding real plants for fresh oxygen. A healthy, organized and visually
appealing working environment allows for creative thinking, productivity
and, above all, a place where you will enjoy spending your days. OH

Luxurious, yet welcoming; sprawling, yet cosy. It’s a place to
gather with family and friends, or sit back and relax in peace.
Walk into this Lorne Park home and you’ll discover elegance
that is also a true family affair, in more ways than one.
Bimal and Anne are dedicated parents who were looking to build the ideal home for their three growing
children. They met their match in Marc Venchiarutti, whose love of building dream homes stems from
his own family ties.
“My father was a builder, and his father was a builder,” the owner of Venchiarutti Builders says. In
fact, the long Venchiarutti family tradition of building began in Canada in 1909, when Marc’s grandfather,
Tony, came to Canada from northern Italy. In 1911, the stonemason and bricklayer crafted the walls of Casa
Loma for Sir Henry Pellatt. In the 1950s, Marc’s father Silvio grew the construction business, building
homes and apartments in the Kingsway area, Mississauga, California and Florida. Continued on page 28

Bimal and Anne’s home sits nestled on a 200 foot wide
forested lot. The steeply pitched roof, lavish stone and
ornamentation were inspired by French chateaux.

Marc knew this was his calling. “Even as a child I knew I would do
this,” he says. “I grew up on job sites!”
Bimal and Anne spent several years looking for the perfect plot of
land before choosing this forest-like setting on a quiet cul-de-sac. The
lot is more than 200 feet wide, just what the couple needed to build their
11,500 sq. ft. paradise.
“We just loved the trees,” Anne recalls. “ There was so much
nature around.”
Architect David W. Small worked with the couple to create a palatial
French Country home that perfectly complemented the wide lot. The
home’s facade features a stunning combination of details, including copper
eaves troughs and accent roofs by Mile Roofing and Renovations Inc.,
and classic stonework by the masons at M. Gasparetto Construction.
The curb appeal continues right up to the home’s magnificent
entryway, as Bimal swings open the nine-foot high arched solid mahogany
double doors.
The hallway’s creamy Turkish limestone floor tiles with intricate
inlays dazzle when bathed in the light streaming down from the skylight.
A curved staircase with ornate wrought-iron railings by Ideal Railings
leads up to a balcony area, overlooking the main floor.
The home features a formal drawing room, but the family room is
what your eye is drawn to. It’s warm and welcoming, with its stunning
two-storey fireplace. The fireplace also serves to divide the space from
the kitchen, and has a unique waterfall feature above the mantel. High
overhead, the ceiling is framed with reclaimed wood beams that perfectly
match the stain on the wide engineered maple floorboards by Aspen
Wood Floors. Continued on page 30

As in most true family homes, the kitchen is the heart of the action for
Anne and Bimal. Their many family gatherings start out with a glass of
wine served at the massive centre island with its one-of-a-kind bronze
and black veined marble top. Creamy antique white and dark-stained
cabinets from Bella Kitchens Inc. are everywhere, including in the
adjacent servery area. A second, smaller kitchen is just perfect for cooking
a big feast to be served in the classically-styled formal dining room. There
is even an elevator close at hand to help transport a steady stream of party
food down to an entertainment area in the basement.
Forget your typical basic wet-bar and rec room in the basement.
This home features a custom-designed party playground for the entire
family. A walk-in wine cellar, billiards room, sauna and home theatre
means there is something here for every member of the family and all
of their entourage.
“Every weekend the kids are down here with all their friends and our
friends too. Everyone always wants to come here, so we never get to go
out!” Anne jokes.
One look around and it’s easy to see why. The bar area features dark
brown cabinetry topped with thick black granite that dazzles with jewellike flecks of silver and copper. The bar’s metallic-tiled backsplash provides
some contemporary bling. A dance floor, complete with disco lights, has a
powerful sound system with built-in speakers. Continued on page 32

A sunken lounge provides the perfect place to curl up in front of the
fire and watch TV. But for a blockbuster movie, a step away is the home
theatre, designed by Devine Audio. It’s the one room that breaks with
the earthy warm tones in the rest of the house; it’s a sophisticated but fun
blend of colourful carpeting and luxurious red leather stadium seating.
And with four spacious bedrooms in the basement, a big problem for
Bimal and Anne might be trying to get guests to go home.
The top floor features the master bedroom and a bedroom for each of
their children. Each of the children’s rooms has its own walk-in closet and
en suite bathroom, one of the main reasons that Bimal and Anne wanted to
build a custom home. The master suite is secluded across the walkway so
Bimal and Anne can get some sleep while noisy slumber parties ensue. A
gorgeous wall of windows by Pella Windows leads to the private balcony
looking over the backyard trees, making this an oasis.
“We worked on this for two years,” Bimal recalls. “For months I came
here every day after work. It was my dream to build the house exactly the
way I wanted.”
And helping to make that kind of dream a reality is Venchiarutti’s goal.
For Anne and Bimal, he got it just right. “This home is fantastic, it’s
cosy and we can relax here.” Bimal says, contentedly. “It’s exactly what
we wanted.” OH

HAVING A BALL
A
BY DENISE O’CONNELL // PHOTOGRAPHY BY JASON HARTOG
As we spend more and more of our free time in our homes these days – raising
families, entertaining friends and living full lives – naturally we want our
houses to be as inviting as they can be to those we love. It is no surprise games
rooms are continually growing in popularity.
Hallmark Billiards understands that as families grow, time together
becomes a luxury. They’ve built their successful family business around
selling games room furniture, but more importantly, by helping families
find that special time together.
Hallmark has been offering the gold standard in games rooms to the
Greater Toronto Area for more than 20 years. The company is the creation
of Richard Kruger and offers customers everything needed to put together
a unique and exciting recreational space.
The impressive 10,000 sq. ft. showroom showcases top billiard table
brands, such as Brunswick Billiards. “We have one of the largest selections
34
o u r h o m e s

of games room furniture in Canada,” says Lorraine Kruger, Richard’s
daughter and head of marketing for Hallmark. “We don’t just specialize
in billiard tables, we have a tremendous selection of bars and bar stools,
poker tables and pub tables and theatre seating. We also carry a selection
of other games such as foosball, air hockey, shuffleboard and darts. For
the finishing touches, we can also help with room décor and lighting.”
Lorraine observes that as parents find themselves living in that last
house before the “empty nest downsize,” they are making a games room part

“Buying a pool table for the home is both a practical and an emotional
purchase; you are purchasing quality time with your family,” Lorraine
divulges. “As children grow older, a pool table fits with a family’s lifestyle.
A pool table is ‘cool’, and everyone gets to sink a shot.” She says no matter
your skill level or age, everyone can play.
“I’ve had a father come in to thank us because he’s spent more time
with his teenager in a month than he has in a year,” Lorraine says.
Hallmark Billiards also works closely with designers and decorators
to assist with room requirements, furniture styles and finishes. They can
work with any budget, big or small.
Lorraine says that poker tables and bars may not seem like family-friendly
fare, but she says that they don’t have to be taboo. “There’s nothing like a
family card game after you’ve sat at the bar to mix exotic milkshakes.”
“The first pool tables were made almost 200 years ago,” says Lorraine.
And although there have been some changes and trends over the years,
the game continues to bring enjoyment to all ages. OH

BUILDING
a Dream
BY DENISE O’CONNELL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JASON HARTOG
T
There was nothing wrong with Robert’s
1950s Lorne Park home. As he put it, “I just
wanted something different for me and
my wife as we got older.”
Robert and his wife Nathalie are far from old – and nothing showcases
that more than talking to Robert about his new custom home. His youthful
vibrancy shows through as he talks about the details.
Robert knew, however, that if he was going to spare the expense, energy
and time to build a custom home, he’d better make it so he could stay there
for a while. Continued on page 40

“We wanted everything on one floor. That way, we wouldn’t have to
worry about stairs when the knees start to give out,” he says with a laugh.
What resulted is a luxurious, but practical 3,000 sq. ft. custom
bungalow on the sprawling mature, perfectly landscaped lot that hosted
the original home, and a captivating story about a man who just about
did it all himself.
“We found everything for this house, and everyone who worked on it,”
declares Robert. “I was pretty much the foreman.”
Robert was inspired a few years ago as his children entered adulthood.
He had an idea in his head, so he simply sat down with a piece of paper and
sketched it out. He liked it so much that he handed it over to a professional
drafter, who helped to draw up the official plans.
With his blueprints in hand, Robert faced a hurdle. He needed to
submit his plans to the city for approval, and he knew that it likely meant
demolishing his existing home before they would allow construction
to begin.
“We really wanted to live in the existing home, while building the
new one,” Robert recalls. “With a few tweaks to the plan, which involved
moving the new home a few feet, the city allowed me to build on the lot
without tearing down the original structure.”
What did need to be taken down were several mature maple and oak
trees in the yard. Robert didn’t want them to go to waste, so he devised a
unique and eco-conscious plan to use the wood throughout the home.
Sure enough, as you make your way into the grand entrance of the
new home, one of the most eye-catching details is the rustic hardwood
floor. An intricate grain and warmth indicates that this isn’t your
everyday hardwood.
“Someone cut and processed the wood right here on the property. After
drying it for a year in my garage, I then sent it out to be further dried and
crafted,” says Robert. “The result is the maple and oak floors that you are
standing on. Almost all the finished wood in the house came from the
land surrounding it.”
The spectacular floors, accented with wool and silk Persian rugs, lead
into the large country kitchen with a contemporary flair. Solid wood
cabinetry surrounds the space, also created from wood on the property.
Because Robert wasn’t dealing with just any wood, he wanted to ensure
that the job was done right, so he hired a nearby Mennonite craftsman at
Heirlooms Cabinetry to do the woodwork in much of the home.
“There are unique dark streaks through the wood grain,” Robert points
out on a cabinet door. “It turns out that the sap was running when we cut the
wood, and that’s what created the unique color and pattern.” Continued on page 42

coffee and enjoy the view of the mature lot.

“Blue Eyes” granite counters from Labrador add flecks of dramatic
royal blue to the space. Huge picture windows from Pella Windows
showcase the landscaped yard with solid cedar pergola and abundant
homegrown vegetables ready for picking.
Even though the home is a bungalow, the high ceilings suggest
otherwise, making the exterior look like a two-storey. Robert chose
low-voltage pot lights to illuminate the home, with a few strategically
placed elegant fixtures. Fourteen-foot ceilings are enhanced with real
plaster mouldings and medallions with detailed designs within, all by
Royal Plaster-Ornament.
“There’s nothing fake in this house,” Robert laughs. “You won’t see
any MDF in here!”
Except for the bedrooms and a quiet library for reading, the home is
very open, making it appear much larger than it is. The dining room, living
room, kitchen and family room with solid stone handcrafted fireplace are
all open to each other, making the space perfect for an intimate gathering
or a large cocktail party.
The three bedrooms are large, but the master bedroom is particularly
spacious with a walk-out Juliet balcony, grand en suite bathroom and walk-in
closet. The walls of the bathroom are lined with Spanish porcelain tile, and the

mirrors are inset, creating a clean minimalist look.

RIGHT: A quiet library with 10-foot-high

you won’t find a desk and computer there.

“These fixtures really caught my eye because they don’t retain water
spots,” Robert jokes, as he showcases the shiny chrome faucets and
matching towel rods. “The bathroom always looks clean!”
A solid oak staircase and railings, crafted by another Mennonite
carpenter with wood from the property, leads down to the huge finished
basement containing almost 1,000 sq. ft. of additional hideaway storage.
Robert had a fireplace built using extra bricks from the exterior – again
wanting to eliminate waste.
Robert pokes his head into a room and says, “Come and look at this –
my favourite part of the house.”
Through the door is a steam bath – a private retreat for him and his
wife to relax and talk after a long day.
Once the home was completed and move-in ready, it was time to
demolish the original.
“It was an emotional day, especially for my kids who had grown up
there,” he says with a sigh.
But he was more than satisfied with his new home, knowing that every
detail was done with care and quality.
“People look at me strangely when I tell them that I would do this
again in a heartbeat,” Robert smiles. “I loved the process, and who knows?
Maybe I will find the opportunity to build again someday.” OH

I always find fall to be the most inspiring season for cooking. The country is literally
bursting at the seams with fresh produce of all shapes, sizes and varieties. The weather
is still kind enough to get outside and use the grill. And the harsh reality of winter
continues to be a far-off prospect. With all this in mind, I’ve given a nod to our (kind
of) neighbours of the American southwest. The tangy vibrant flavours of that region
coupled with our amazing local produce results in this colourful, ultra-satisfying dish.
It’s rich enough for a vegetarian main course when paired with a salad, or equally at home
as a side to your favourite grilled meat. Best enjoyed with friends or family, of course!
The separate components can be prepared a day in advance, then assembled and
baked the following day. A great option for entertaining without any fuss.
TO PREPARE:
•
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp chili powder
•
¾ tsp salt
•
½ tsp dried oregano
¾ cup basmati rice
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 ½ cups crumbled feta cheese
•
¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 tbsp red wine vinegar

Heat grill to medium-high heat. Grill pepper, turning occasionally, until skins are
blackened but pepper still holds shape, about 10 minutes. Transfer to bowl, cover with
plastic wrap and let stand for 10 minutes. Peel skin from pepper, being careful to leave
pepper intact. Set aside.
Grill corn over medium heat, turning often, until tender, about 10 minutes. Let cool.
Cut kernels from cob and set aside.
Heat oil in saucepan over medium heat. Saute onions, celery and jalapeno until
golden, about 8 minutes. Stir in garlic, cumin seeds, coriander, chili powder, salt and
oregano; cook for 2 minutes. Stir in rice; cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Stir in 1 ѿ cups
water and bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until rice is tender and all
water is absorbed, about 8 minutes. Turn off heat, let pot stand on burner, covered,
for 5 minutes. Stir in black beans, 1 cup of the feta cheese, the cilantro, vinegar and
reserved corn kernels.
Cut tops from peppers and remove core and seeds. Stuff each pepper generously with
rice filling. Place in baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining feta cheese. Bake in 400ºF
oven until mixture is warmed through and cheese is golden, about 20 minutes. OH
