SUMMER 2014
English Edition
#11
Introduction
by Umayya Theba
It’s the summer to score more!
If you’ve chosen to spend a few months baking in the humid heat of the
fashion capital rather than fly south to catch the peak of football fever, you’ve
made an educated decision which will most certainly see you enjoying the best
of both worlds.
Read our suggestions on sports gear which are every bit as fashionable as
they are recognised before gathering in Piazza Duomo to join the cheering
crowd. And just in case your team is failing miserably, hide your emotions –
and tears - with our range of handpicked designer sunglasses. Since you will be
outnumbered by passionate patriotic fans, consider showing your support for
Italy’s national team instead, but if soccer doesn’t hold your interest, perhaps
an Emporio Armani sweater designed for an Italian basketball team will.
Whatever sport you follow, putting all your faith in a team may lead to
serious disappointment, but this Expo 2015 host city will lift you from despair

with countless other reasons to score big. Invest in your personal style from
morning to evening with our outlined looks which mix and match branded
items ideal for a day-time date with Zaini’s chocolate delights, an afternoon
aperitivo at la Rinascente, an evening rendez-vous at the Arena di Verona
and other truly unique locations where quality, style and tradition have stood
the test of time.

Towards Expo
T
here are a few months to go to the beginning
of Expo 2015, the World Fair that, from 1 May
to 31 October next year, will make Milan the
world capital of topics linked to nutrition.
“Feeding the planet. Energy for life.” is, in fact,
the theme chosen for the event which, according to
tradition, will be enhanced by myriad initiatives.
The first half of 2014, the year prior to the event,
has already seen a significant increase of Expo’s
visibility in the city.
Expo Gate: the new gateway to Milan
The two booth-like pavilions of Expo Gate were recently
opened in the heart of the city. Designed as an info
point and a place to share and exchange ideas on topics
related to Expo 2015, for 18 months they will serve
as a stage for multimedia interdisciplinary events
connected to the World of Expo.
Expo Gate is located in via Beltrami, in a highly central
position between the Castello Sforzesco - the site of
the Universal Exposition of 1906 in Milan – and via
Dante, the street along which the flags of countries
participating at Expo Milano 2015 are displayed.
Its location symbolizes its role as a gateway between
Milan and the Expo, in the same way as Milan has
always been considered a bridge between Italy and the
rest of the world.
Open daily from 10am to 8pm, besides serving as
an info and ticket point where visitors can obtain
information about the event, purchase merchandise and
buy tickets in advance, Expo Gate is also a true breeding
ground of ideas.
The structure
Expo Gate is a double modular transparent building
boasting a framework that is not only light in terms of
shape but also in terms of environmental impact.
Designed by Alessandro Scandurra, the structure’s two
pavilions is arranged around a central square supported
by two large reticular, aerial frameworks.
The flexibility and transparency of the structure serve
as an example, paving the way for new, more direct
communication systems and exhibition sites. In fact, two
large ribbed vaultscreen-like structures will act as a support
for the ongoing transmission of information in real time.

UMAYYA THEBA
Play 'peek-a-boo'
in style!
This summer, seek - then hide behind designer sunglasses...
A
n unspoken language of fleeting glances conveys so much to
passers-by, but this summer, these designer sunglasses are
stylish reasons to maintain an air of mystery, create intrigue
and shield your emotions without having to lower your gaze. Invest in a
pair with reflective tinted panes proven to protect the delicate retinas
from harmful ultraviolet rays, and show the world your best side
beautified with decorative metal, leather and jewel detail.
VIA MONTENAPOLEONE
A subdued natural palette dominates the Louis Vuitton range of
spectacular rimless and thick-framed eyewear, while turquoise and
purple are injected into the ‘Charlotte’ and ‘Anemone’. Petal-shaped
frames give distinction to the ‘Daisy’ model while the ‘Obsession
Cat-eye’ is decorated with the brand’s signature pointed flower pattern
making these 100% UV protection pieces instantly recognisable.
▲Louis Vuitton
The attractive ‘Amber’ is edged
with metal monogram flowers
on the arm tips while the ‘LV’
signature is engraved onto the
lenses and temples.
Easy to identify with a single glance, Prada sunglasses are whimsical
accessories with some flaunting the "Baroque curl" at the temple or
large, round frames for eccentricity and others, a generous lashing of
tortoiseshell surrounding cat-eye lenses. Peep through the bejewelled
Prada ‘Ornate’ or the ‘Poeme’ design which boasts oversized square
frames.
With uncompromising design and quality extending to a myriad
of daily items like silk scarves and precious pens, Bulgari has
successfully permeated their range of fine eyewear with extraordinary
luxury too. Get noticed with big round frames from the Diva Collection,
metal scales on ‘Serpenti’ items or multi-coloured sapphires on a ‘Le
Gemme’ pair.
Make a statement with unconventional Versace eyewear that
incorporates interesting detail for undisputed glamour. Let the fun
begin with the colourful ‘Rock Medusa’ which features canary yellow

arms, or wear the maxi shades in contrasting black
and white. Don’t be bound by bright hues when you opt
for something stunning that’s trimmed with studs or
textured with a marble effect.
Enjoy superb protection from harsh UV rays with
handcrafted Dior sunglasses. Flaunt the confidence of
a silver screen siren with rectangular frames or go for
glamour with a butterfly silhouette. Non-conforming
architectural lines meet high fashion trends to create
their unstructured pantos shape, while the mask
contours of the Dior ‘Solar’ range create a dynamic yet
subtle contrast with pink, yellow and ivory metal as well
as mirrored lenses.
The Cartier maison proudly features their iconic big
cat on a number of their exceptionally crafted jewels,
and precious eyewear is no exception. The panther is
tastefully stretched to become the gold-finished arms
of light, rimless sunglasses featuring a wide range of
colored lenses to choose from; See the world through
rose, calm green or blue tints but if you prefer rimmed
glasses to balance defined eyebrows, experiment with
Trinity De Cartier. Inspired by their three-banded Trinity
design, these frames are comprised of red composite,
grey lenses and a golden palladium finish.
SAN BABILA
Set within the heart of the fashion Quad in Piazza San
Babila the flagship store of Salmoiraghi & Viganò, one
of the largest and most innovative opticians in the
world, is experimenting a new store concept. Here,
the designer brands on display take centre stage in
the space dedicated to them thanks to the creation
and customization of thematic islands designed to
give increased visibility to the new collections. This
innovative display method guarantees that each brand
is free to choose its own display format, manage the
assigned space and customize the layout which is thus
not only distinguished from that of other brands but also
in keeping with the aesthetic of the chain’s other monobrand showrooms.

brands including Tom Ford, Jimmy Choo, Miu Miu,
Dolce & Gabbana, Lindeberg, Gucci, Ray-Ban, Bulgari,

international brands.
VIA DELLA SPIGA
Unleash your fabulous feline self and maintain an air of
mystery with dramatic Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses in
leopard spots and blooming florals. DG-branded black
frames hint at mosaic on the inner edges of the arms,
and for the truly bold-at-heart fashionista, get behind
a 70’s inspired pair moulded from pearled acetate in
purple, red or petrol blue with exposed silver temples.
Amidst the Chopard luxury watches, high jewellery
and engagement rings, this French brand showcases
exquisite eyewear like the dark ‘Havana’ frames with
gleaming rose-gold details and a touch of bling to lift the
graduated brown lenses. Wrap your pretty peepers in
oversized Bordeaux frames polished with 23-carat gold
or get chic sunglasses that appear to be carved out of
semi-precious rock.

‘Metaleyes’ sunglasses are
characterised by a feminine
circular form, a glossy metal wave
across the crystal acetate front
and subtle contrasting hues.

Dubbed the “Ice Pop”, these ‘Original

demi-gloss lilac hue with clear gradient
blue lenses.
▲Dolce & Gabbana
The butterfly profile of this wild pair with
its animalier print holds polarised brown
gradient lenses which offer proven UV
protection.
◄Chopard
Gradual smoky lenses are set in shiny
grey, stone-effect frames with sparkling
palladium for a rich, impressive look.
MASCULINE MUST-HAVES!
▲Panthère De Cartier
Rimless shades are graced with their
leopard mascot, gold or platinumfinished temples and oval, brown
lenses that gleam with a golden
mirror reflection.
The iconic ‘Frames for Life’ Collection by Armani
introduces a classic retro design. Try a solid colour
frame with rhombus-shaped rivets or opt for a more
contemporary model with emphasized corners,
temples lined with indulgent velvet and gold-plated
accents.
Introducing ‘Tinfoil’ by Oakley, a brilliantly
constructed stainless steel design with a faux halfrim for comfort and striking fire iridium lenses. It
promises a snug fit with their unobtainium earsocks,
air-filled silicon nosepads and screw-less cam hinge
mechanisms.
Avid sportsman or jet-setting businessman? There’s
an appealing pair by Cartier oozing timeless elegance
or racy good looks. Appreciate the bubinga wood of the
rimless C Décor, or pay tribute to the aviator, Santos
Dumont, with a metal frame and leather nose detail.
The Blacktie Collection by Dior of fiercely
competitive models are created from an uncommon
mix of materials. Try the round crystal acetate and
stainless steel pair with black rubber which traces the
brand’s emblem. Alternatively, admire the rectangular
version with mirrored clip-on lenses and aluminium
temples.

STRAIGHT OFF THE PITCH
For football fans, shopping means purchasing the official sports
jerseys of our two home teams, A.C. Milan and F.C. Inter. However, please note:
this is Italy where football and fashion are taken very seriously. Therefore, it’s not
just a question of any old merchandise but real items of prestige.
When it comes to fashion, Milan probably wins the Derby: in fact, its partnership
with Dolce&Gabbana now spans a decade and transcends mere technical
aspects by a long stretch. A taste of the world created by the two brands can
be found online at www.dolcegabbana.it/ac-milan/video/. The team’s official
merchandise is sold at the Milan Store (its technical sponsor is Adidas). Galleria
San Carlo, M1 San Babila (open daily, 10am-8pm). The Milan Store recently
opened a new 450 sq.m. official sales point at the headquarters of Casa Milan
(Portello-Fieramilanocity district). Directly accessible from either the Mondo
Milan museum or the square, this “experience store” carries all the best Milan
merchandise, official jerseys, technical team gear as well as exclusive unique
pieces. For the first time ever, the store now also boasts a bookshop where you
can find books dedicated to the history of the team, its protagonists and the best
football shirts of all time (open daily, 10am-8pm and on Thurs 10am-10pm).
ELENA BINDA

Basketball fan? Bounce around in an
Emporio Armani labelled sweater. It
boasts a contrasting zip closure and

The other home team is F.C. Inter, whose technical sponsor is Nike: the “Solo
Inter” store in via Berchet 1 (M1-M3 Duomo, open daily 10.30am-7.30pm) sells
official merchandise, customized jerseys and memorabilia plus an entire range of
leisurewear. Finally, also the Juventus fans can find the official merchandise of
their football team at the Juvestore in corso Europa 20 (M1 San Babila).
NOT JUST FOOTBALL
In addition to A.C. Milan and F.C. Inter, there is also another team that is particularly
dear to the hearts of the Milanese: legendary basketball team Olimpia which,
since 2008, has sported the name – and elegance – of Emporio Armani. At
Armani’s marvellous concept store in via Manzoni 31, in addition to the designer’s
entire collection, you can also find his EA7 line: sportswear made from techno
fabrics featuring all the charm and elegance of Italian style, including not only the
official merchandise of the basketball team but also the gear worn by the Italy
team at Sochi 2014, always designed by Giorgio Armani.
STELLA OUTFITS ADIDAS
Adidas and Stella Mc Cartney boast one of the longest partnerships within
fashion and sportswear. Since 2005, Stella McCartney has worked with the
sportswear super-brand to design a collection of high performance, sleek
sportswear favoured by young Milanese fashionistas who enjoy a number of
sports disciplines including running and yoga. Her collection has won over the
hearts of the fashion pack in the Quadrilatero della Moda, one of planet fashion’s
finest blocks and can now be found either at her monobrand store in via Santo
Spirito 3 or at la Rinascente Piazza Duomo.
NIKE EXPERIENCE
In just a few months, the new Nike Milano Porta Nuova store, in piazza Gae Aulenti
(M2-M5 Garibaldi FS), has become a reference point for running enthusiasts. With
its 400 square metres of wood and steel décor, it blends in perfectly with one of the
newest and most architecturally interesting areas in the city. Among other things,
it is also home to the exclusive Nike Collection, currently only available at its
sales points in Paris and London. But that’s not all, at its Porta Nuova location, Nike
specialists are on-hand to offer gait analysis and expert advice, helping runners find
their perfect footwear and the running bras best-suited to their body type.

VIBRAM REVOLUTION
Milan is also home to what Time Magazine described as one of the best
inventions of 2007, namely the famed FiveFingers® shoe, a real “foot glove”

made from ultra-tech rubber which countless runners have
welcomed as an ingenious revolution (www.vibramfivefingers.
it). These minimalist or “barefoot” shoes are manufactured by
Vibram, an Italian company boasting a poetic past: in 1935,
after witnessing a tragic mountaineering accident deemed
to have been caused by the use of inadequate footwear, their
founder, Vitale Bramani, swore that this would never happen
again. He thus began producing mountaineering boots
featuring soles made of vulcanized rubber.

A more affordable option
Conversely, for those who are not necessarily in
search of upmarket brands or an ultra-sophisticated look but simply require something functional
to wear either when training or during their leisure
time, we suggest paying a visit to Decathlon, boasting a mega-store in Foro Bonaparte 74. A major
French sporting goods chain, in 1993 it entered the
Italian market where a significant part of its technical production now takes place. Featuring an array
of equipment and clothing for all sports disciplines,
it also sells a range of leisurewear for city outings
including T-shirts and trousers.
FASHION FABRICS GET TECHNICAL
Pirelli PZero, a trademark based on the evolution of Pirelli
tyres, it offers branded urban sportswear with a sartorial
aesthetic, inspired by the style of gentlemen drivers. At its
store in Corso Venezia 1 (M1 San Babila), this summer’s
must-haves include ultra-light loafers in Manion neoprene,
featuring a tyre tread sole and the label’s latest biker jacket in
an array of different colours.
In via Ugo Foscolo 8 (M1-M3 Duomo), the new K-Way
single-brand store offers a range of classic waterproof and
windbreaker jackets for men, women and children, but also
sweatshirts, trousers and accessories featuring the maison’s
typical multi-colour zipper. New arrivals for the summer
include the brand’s must-have double-face collection which
also features their never-seen-before animalier print.
Located in via Santo Spirito 22 (M3 Montenapoleone), Italian
outerwear specialists Duvetica welcomes in the spring/
summer season with their latest collection of colourful
sporty super-stylish lightweight down quilted jackets and
vests - with or without hoods - available for men, women and
children. Designed for a young funky audience, their new
sleeveless vests team perfectly with a pair of shorts.
Inspired by the 60’s-style uniforms of male and female
flight attendants – especially those of Iconic US airlines
Pan American – Peuterey’s summer collection, whose
technical apparel marries function with high-fashion, is
designed for metropolitan travellers. Their Flagship Store is
strategically located in upmarket Milan, in via della Spiga 6.
THE WORLD AT YOUR FEET
So what about shoes? Beyond a boundless offer of smart
casual footwear with a nod to some more sporty looks,
la Rinascente boasts a sneakers department where you
can find every brand known to mankind including Adidas,
Converse, Diadora, Nike, Reebok, Puma and Superga but also
Armani and Valentino, Marc Jacobs and Martin Margiela, Ralph
Lauren and Onitsuka Tiger, Saukony and Lacoste, to mention
but a few. (www.rinascente.it . M1-M3 Duomo).

Handcrafted
for your feet
A leader in the production of luxury footwear,
Ballin expresses the perfect fusion of tradition
and cutting-edge craftsmanship serving as a reflection
of Made in Italy excellence
T
his historic Italian footwear label, established in
1945 thanks to the passion and entrepreneurial
vision of Ballin brothers, Guido and Giorgio, is
headquartered in Fiesso D’Artico on the Brenta Riviera,
an area where the production of high-quality footwear
is deeply rooted.
Over the years, the strength of the brand has been its
ability to combine the right mix of tradition and innovation,
ever-aware of rapidly-evolving fashions and market
requirements. Professionalism, passion and a strong
heritage are the values that Giorgio Ballin has handed down
to his three children, Gabriella, Reanna and Alessandro
who now run the business.
During its almost 70 years of history, the Company
has worked with several of the best-known maisons on
the International fashion scene and still today plays an
important role as a production partner. At its elegant
Milanese boutique at number 5 via Santo Spirito, in the
heart of the Quadrilatero della Moda, you can find all the
elegance of its Made in Italy footwear collections together
with an exclusive line of leather goods.
28_MILAN LUXURY
Today the Company is rapidly expanding the presence of its
own-name brand which not only expresses typically Made in
Italy craftsmanship but also ongoing research and attention
to detail to create a seductive, ultra-feminine style.
At present, the Ballin label is distributed in more than 35
countries worldwide at 19 mono-brand boutiques and 400
select multi-brand sales points both in Italy and abroad.
See page 48 for new Spring/Summer collections.

DAMIANI
JAEGER-LECOULTRE
Telling the time takes on an interesting twist here at Jaeger-LeCoultre, the
company's first mono-brand store in Italy where aesthetics, design and functionality
form integral parts of the product offering. Strap on a watch from their Reverso
Collection and let your mind explore the endless possibilities for personalization
because the swivel mechanism is seen as a blank canvas on which wearers can
mirror an admired painting with enamel, engrave meaningful messages and even
pave the surface in precious stones.
Drawing inspiration from the aesthetic codes of this iconic model, this year JaegerLeCoultre has created the Grande Reverso Ultra Thin Tribute to 1931 in pink gold with
a chocolate-toned dial. Distinguished by an ultra-flat case, contemporary dimensions
and a remarkable faithfulness to the inspiration watch, this model evokes several
of the most stunning expressive forms of Art Déco. The contrast between the
warm chocolate shade and the pink gold of the case, embellished by the traditional
gadroons framing the dial serve to highlight its appeal even further. Boasting a
thickness of just 7.3 mm, it incorporates the complex components of the swivel
mechanism and a movement which is just 2.95mm thick. Lastly, its beautiful brown
alligator strap with its pink gold pin buckle is only one of the options proposed. In fact,
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s collaboration with legendary bootmaker Casa Fagliano (devoted,
for more than one century, to crafting flawless footwear in the historic capital of
polo, Bueonos Aires) has resulted in the creation of elegant handcrafted straps in
Cordovan leather, famed not only for its beauty but also its extraordinary durability.

of clothing, accessories and homeware for those who appreciate modern
style and traditional Italian craftsmanship. Easy-to-wear garments
featuring impeccably tailored lines in which even the noblest furs are
adapted to suit a young, contemporary style. Diverse materials meet
and give life to new trends: quilted jackets pair perfectly with fur, fur
enhances cashmere and the unexpected becomes a fashion item.

“D”, Damiani’s iconic symbol. The collection features pendants, earrings
