Silent Knight Conforms to UL 864
9th Edition
Silent Knight is committed to providing you
with the best fire alarm control panels and
accessories in the industry. A major part of
that commitment is to provide products that
conform to the latest industry standards.
Over the last year, we have made the investment to conform to the Underwriters
Laboratories 9th edition updates to section
864, which align UL testing procedures with
the latest NFPA standards. It’s critical that the
products you are using meet these standards
to insure that your installations can be
installed and approved without interruption.
But what is UL 9th? To help you understand
the importance of the updated code, below is
an overview of the updates.
Fire Alarm equipment is tested and listed,
and/or approved by nationally recognized
testing organizations and certifying agencies
within the U.S. to ensure that applicable products meet the performance requirements of
the Standards and Codes of such regulatory
authorities. In addition, certain jurisdictions
may have their own approval or certification
process, which supplements national standards.
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is the most
universally recognized certification organization within the Fire Alarm industry. Material
and Equipment Acceptance (MEA) for New
York City, California State Fire Marshal (CSFM)
for California, City of Chicago, Maryland State
Fire Marshal (MSFM) for Maryland and City of
Denver are examples of recognized State or
City Authorities having Jurisdiction (AHJ) that
concern themselves with Fire requirements.
By comparison, the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) develops model Codes that
serve as the technical basis to install, operate
and maintain Fire Alarm systems and equipment. Such NFPA Code serves as a foundation
for national building codes, as well as State
and local fire codes.
Only Fire Alarm products that meet or exceed
the multitude of national and local requirements should be considered for utmost public
safety and protection of property.
Founded in 1894, Underwriters Laboratories,
Inc. (UL) is an independent, not-for-profit
product safety testing and certification organization. UL’s focus is on conformity assessment in the areas of electrical devices, programmable systems and quality processes.
They conduct almost 100,000 product evaluations annually, in accordance with more than
1,250 UL Standards.
In 2003, UL updated its Standard for Control
Units and Accessories for Fire Alarm Systems
(UL 864) to better align with prevailing
Standards and Codes. This “9th Edition” of the
UL 864 Standard encompasses more than
180 revisions to UL requirements. Some of the
key changes include response time improvements, enhanced immunity to RF Interference,
better synchronization with Notification
Appliances, greater software integrity and
broadened programming requirements. In
addition, the 9th Edition of UL 864 includes
updates in supervision and monitoring, along
with compatibility and power transmission.

2006 Farenhyt Distributor
Conference Gets Fired Up!
If you haven’t heard by now, the 2005 Farenhyt
Distributor Conference was a huge success and
this year’s agenda is proving to be even better.
Held at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point in
Bonita Springs, FL, on November 5 - 8, this will
be an event to remember. Our keynote speaker
this year will be John Cassis, “a humourist with
a message” and former professional baseball
player. Also making a return engagement is Bob
Langdon, our very own financial guru, and
some fire industry knowledge powerhouses,
Wayne Moore and George Toth. Plus, our usual
cadre of educational and product focused
speakers to help you help your businesses.
We’re repeating the format of our highly successful vendor night - quality time with our
suppliers like System Sensor and Hockiki, and
a fun “Gaming Night” complete with games for
everyone to enjoy. And we’ve really fired up the
band for the Awards night – straight from
Chicago, the Blues Brothers will perform with
Cab Calloway and 9-piece band with full horn
section. Bring your black hat and sunglasses!!
If you’ve never attended a Farenhyt conference,
this is a great year to come and experience the
education workshops, fabulous location and
great networking and entertainment. If you’re a
veteran of these conferences, you know that
each year just keeps getting better, and this
year is no exception. Look for the registration
mailer at your location soon, and make sure to
make your hotel reservations as soon as you
can.
We look forward to seeing and talking with you
soon! •

in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
Project
Family Will Never Lose Home to Fire Again
IRVINGTON, N.J. - In October 2005, Beverly
Turner and her nine adopted children with
special needs lost their home to a severe
fire. Now, they have a new home, thanks to
the extremely popular and charitable TV program, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
The Turner family can be assured that history
will never repeat, thanks to a partnership
between Silent Knight, a leading provider of
fire alarm solutions, and Home Control
Systems of Bayville, NJ.
Since the family’s displacement, Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition received approximately 10,000 nominations suggesting the
Turner family as ideal candidates for the
show. Now the family’s prayers have been
answered with a new three-floor home featuring many exciting amenities, including a
sophisticated Silent Knight fire alarm system.
“It is safe to say that this home will never be
lost to fire again, due to the extensive and
sophisticated fire alarm system provided by
Silent Knight,” said John Thormann, co-owner
with his wife Brenda of Home Control
Systems, the distributor that installed the system. Thormann and his volunteer crew of
workers installed a Silent Knight 5208 with
expansion zones and a 4-zone relay board.
“We are proud to say that we were the first
to pass inspection,” said Thormann “Silent
Knight’s generous donation to this project is
greatly appreciated by us and will be an
important part of the Turner’s family life.”
Airing on May 21, 2006, this specific televised
project was the biggest task the Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition team has taken on
this year. •

On the business front, we continue to make
our mark in the Engineered Systems channel
by calling on A&E’s and end users to get the
Farenhyt line specified. Year to date, the
Farenhyt line is 24% ahead of where we were
in 2005. That is an impressive number. We
appreciate all your efforts in growing our combined business together.
Another positive note is that most of our products have finally been UL 9th Edition listed.
Now that we are through this long process, we
are able to concentrate on future products. We
are excited about the opportunities we have
with the Farenhyt program and will keep you
abreast of new developments.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the conference - please make a concerted effort to
come. We spend a great deal of time and energy to plan and execute the best conference we
can for you, our valued partners.
Again, thank you for the opportunity to allow
Silent Knight to partner with your business and

Indgjer, in his 18 years at Silent Knight, has
always been on the front line working with our
customers. He began his career with Silent
Knight as a customer service representative.
After seven years in customer service, Indgjer
said, “I was ready for a new challenge and
wanted to understand more about how our
products worked so I accepted the position in
technical support.” Indgjer learned the ins and
outs of Silent Knight products, then four years
later he accepted a position as a technical
trainer.
He said, “Indgjer’s product knowledge is rock
solid and our customers know him! These
things put him in a position to offer excellent
support to our customers in his new role as an
application engineer.”
When the position for application engineer
opened six years had passed and Indgjer
thought he had something to offer. Peter
Howard, Silent Knight Manager of Engineering
Services oversees the application engineers.
When asked what has kept him here for 18
years, Indgjer said, “I’m still excited about the
direction of our product line, I’m still learning
every day, and I like working with our customers.” •
Silent Knight added another application engineer because “We want to maintain the level
of support our customers have come to expect
from Silent Knight. Since we’ve grown over the
years, we determined that now is the time to
add another application engineer to our staff,”
said Howard.
