Roberts Foundation funded an intriguing range e board of the edward C. & ann t. Roberts Foundation dedicates its of arts programs in 2011 including the education programs related to the 2011 annual Report to two retiring board members – Maggie Willard Wadsworth and alex Vance. Maggie joined the Roberts board in 1995 and served as a atheneum’s Monet board member for five years and as president of the board for 11 years. exhibit, a billings alex joined the board in 1997 and served as both treasurer and investment Forge Community Work’s MashUp event, Capital Classic’s presentation of Committee Chair. e Foundation flourished under Maggie and alex’s shakespeare’s Richard III, oil drum art’s 2012 exhibition and Carolyn Kuan’s tenure and the board is grateful for their steadfast leadership over the years. inaugural season as Music director of Hartford symphony orchestra. Hartford Opera Theatre performs Samuel Barber’s A Hand of Bridge. 2011 Grant Highlights several arts organizations received Roberts Foundation grants for the first time. bated breath eatre Company’s provocative production, Hunger, featured desire, revenge and chocolate! new england Carousel Museum received funding for the restoration of the popular bushnell park Carousel. other first time grantees included Hartford opera eatre, playhouse eatre Group, spectrum in Motion dance Company, university of Connecticut’s ballard institute and Museum of puppetry and West Hartford symphony orchestra. Whether a long-term grantee or new, each arts organization funded in 2011 helped the Roberts Foundation realize its mission – to support and encourage excellence in the arts for the benefit of Greater Hartford audiences. Photo: Nicole Battistone Creation of New Work Initiative established in 2003, the Foundation’s Creation of New Work initiative seeks 2011 Board of Directors to foster creativity in Greater Hartford by supporting the collaboration of local Magrieta l. Willard, president artists and arts organizations. at its december 2011 meeting, the board Jack Kennedy, secretary considered applications for new works in the performing arts. e board pierre Guertin, treasurer approved a 2012 grant to the Windsor art Center which will commission a H. alex Vance, Jr. new work by composer Kathryn swanson. inspired by the Farmington River, John alves Ms. swanson’s production, e River, will incorporate original music, R. Kelley bonn Chair, investment Committee electronic manipulations and field recordings as well as dance, photography Mike stotts, arts Representative and film. e Foundation will consider proposals in visual arts Carol terry and film/video this fall. Roberts Foundation is a private, special purpose foundation that supports and encourages excellence in the arts. it was founded in 1962 by ned Roberts, an accomplished orchestra musician, and his wife, sunny, a recognized artist, who shared a passion for community theater, devoting countless hours to the Mark twain Masquers from the 1940s through the 1960’s. eir generous endowment of the Foundation allows it to make annual grants today of nearly $300,000 to support the performing and visual arts in the greater Hartford area. e Foundation focuses its giving in Hartford, Connecticut and the immediately surrounding area. e deadlines for 2012 are February 1, May 2, august 1, and november 1. applications for e Creation of New Work initiative are due september 4, 2012.
