uffolk Yacht
Harbour’s mastery
of traditional and
modern refurbishment
techniques are under
examination at the
moment with major
projects on two very
different types of craft.
‘Sea Marge’
This old 35 ft double-ended
fishing boat was built by Smith
& Hutton in Dundee and
converted to a private vessel
some years ago. Her owner,
Mr P Harvey, has instructed us
to carry out major structural work
and repairs to her very pretty but badly rotted - rear end.
It is quite a challenge for
our shipwrights to say the least.
BOB GIBBON
boat movement manager
Bob (33) arrived at SYH in 1995
for a summer job in the chandlery
following four years at uni, graduating
with a degree in engineering product
design. To cut a long story short - the
product design job never appeared
and Bob signed on permanently at the
yacht harbour at the end of ‘95.
He moved from the chandlery into
the complex logistics of boat moving
with Chris Nunn and recently has
been involved in the re-arrangement
of all the hardstanding spaces during
construction of the west harbour.
Bob cannot afford to make mistakes
in his job - but he does admit to one:
He brought the lovely motor cruiser
“Juliagee”ashore one Friday evening
when she was due to be committee
boat at a regatta next morning! As
soon as the mistake was realised, the
troops were rallied and she was
re-launched in the nick of time.
Bob’s comes from a yachting family
and he remembers cruising in his
father’s Dufour-designed Arpege from
the age of 4. The boat was based at
Walton & Frinton Y C where Bob also
spent happy years sailing and racing
Mirrors and Lasers on the Backwaters.
The Arpege is still in the family and
has now been passed down to Bob’s
older brother.
Four years studying design have
certainly left an artistic mark with Bob
and he is a particularly creative amateur
photographer - as can be seen by his
stunning winter ‘Orwellscape’ below.
He has a passion for speed on and
off the water. He has owned a pretty
quick RIB and also enjoys customising
and competing in very powerful 4WD
vehicles.
He is married to Emma and as we
went to press, we are delighted to
announce the arrival of their first child,
Charlotte Libby.

Originally built some 50
years ago from douglas fir on

The seams are being recaulked with Egyptian cotton
and Sikaflex.
‘Linden’
‘Linden’ is an entirely
different proposition being a
long-keeled grp yacht of the
‘Neptunian 33’ class built in
the ‘seventies by Shuttlewoods
from Tyler mouldings and owned
by Mr D Simonds. She is ketch
rigged with a rigid doghouse.
We have completed a full
topside respray using top-ofthe range ‘Awlgrip’ two-pack

Her underwater regions
have been gelcoat peeled and
we are currently applying a full

If you have not been to the yacht harbour for
a few months - you’re in for a big surprise.
Suffolk Yacht Harbour’s
regatta programme
gets busier every year.
The new west harbour is now
full of water and the area we have
created looks positively enormous.
If you turn to port once inside the
entrance, you’ll see what we mean.
Of course there are many
more pontoons to put in place yet
and the electricity and water
supplies will be installed over the
winter. We are also about to start
building a very smart new toilet,
shower block and laundry ready
for the scheduled completion date
in Spring 2005.

The Bermudan Brigade returned
in force with over 40 yachts for
SYH’s third Classic Regatta over
the weekend of June 12-13th.
For the first time the East Coast
Stella fleet turned up in numbers
and showed how well they perform
on handicap. Mick Willet’s Polaris
took the Clarke & Carter Classic
Yacht Trophy as overall winner.
The criteria for entry: bermudan
rigged, wooden yachts built before
1970 has struck a chord with classic
yacht owners who come from far
and wide to attend. Next year’s
Mick Willet’s Stella No 99 Polaris
won the Classic Regatta
dates are provisionally 11/12 June.

Felixstowe Regatta - the East Coast’s
premier event with over 70 yachts
competing - as well as welcoming
the East Coast Old Gaffers for 2-3
nights and providing excellent rates
and facilities for visiting yacht clubs.

Martin Myerscough suggest
that the yacht’s handling has
been transformed.
The lighter rig has made
her much less tender with
reduced pitching. “A much
better boat all round.”
The beautiful Levington based ‘Madam’ had the
misfortune to lose her wooden mast while cruising
off Norway last year. Replacing the whole rig turned out
to be Rig Magic’s biggest project of summer 2004

of Aldeburgh for eminent
architect Sir Michael Hopkins.

planked cedar, shoal draft
daysailer Windflower was
launched in May.

ne of the problems
with Madam’s wooden mast was its very
considerable weight so Nige
and the team specified a new
Nordic aluminium section for
the replacement spar.
Bringing the 26 metre
section back from the docks
pushed the capacity of Rig
Magic’s trailer to its limit, but
work was soon underway.
The internal spec of the
mast was quite sophisticated
with 4” Frederiksen custom
ballrace sheeves running in
custom sheeve boxes. All the
internal halyards on Madam
exit the mast under the cabin
sole before re-emerging in
the cockpit.

down into the ‘Park Avenue’
We’d been having right
royal battle with this year’s
Cowes Week champion
Kiss belonging to David
Pinner - and also based at
Suffolk Yacht Harbour.
Just as the last race was
developing into a real fight
to the finish, we carelessly got
our mainsheet into an almighty
tangle, could not free off and
our rival ‘Kissed’ us goodbye.
So 2nd overall - one better
than last year. But we did also
win the awesome Dubarry
Boot - and free boots for the
whole crew - which did make
the trip well worthwhile!

STOP PRESS: Crikey V! Overall winner of Sail East 2004,
Class 2 Winners and X332 Class winners.
She is 10m (32'8") LOA and
draws 0.53m (21") with centreplate raised and features twin
rudders and ballast bilge keels.

and he needed a modern
‘ditchcrawler’ that would be
able to get to the upper
reaches of the East Coast
rivers. Rig Magic built the
easily handled, full battened
rig from a Nordic mast and
Selden boom. She has a big
roached mainsail, no backstay
and a self-tacking jib.
Racing season
The enormous workload
this summer meant that
Crikey V!’s planned season
had to be somewhat curtailed.
Nevetheless, we managed
to get to the X-332 Nationals
in Ramsgate and - as last year were leading the regatta
going into the final day.

We’ve said it before, but
every year it gets more important to get any work you need
ready for next season into us
early. NOW is a really good
time. We have maximum
capacity between now and
Christmas - and any work will
cost you less, too.
We are very keen to avoid
situations where a yachtsman
pops his head round our door
just before Easter saying:
“Could you have a quick
look at my furler - it’s very
stiff - we first noticed it at the
end of last season”
Always keen to help, we
do just that, but the quick
look reveals major bearing
problems and a regrettable
drop down to the bottom of
a very long queue for our
unfortunate customer.
So if you are expecting to
go afloat in time for Easter
2005 - and you have work
you know now will need to be
done by then, please come
and see us as soon as possible your forward planning helps
us give better service to everyone in the busy spring time.

Half a propellor
and a failed ‘P’
bracket.
‘P’ Bracket Problems
Matthew was called out
recently to a fairly new Feeling
yacht which had been in difficulties and taking on quite a
lot of water from the stern.
The ‘P’ bracket had sheered
off and the prop and shaft
were dangling beneath the hull
- causing the aft seal to open
and allow green stuff to make
its way into the hull.
The bracket failure was
caused by massive vibration
following the loss of half of
the propellor - this itself the
result of fouling a fishing line.
The P-Bracket was badly
weakened through electolysis
caused by lack of bonding to
a sacrificial anode.
A cautionary tale of how
one thing leads to another . . .

When is a twin not a twin?
When Harbour Light paid a
visit to French Marine in
September, Mattthew was
deep in the bowels of a big
Ocean Star 48 powerboat trying to find out why one her
two TAMD-74 412hp diesels
was way down on power.
He was not short of ideas
but the EDC, electronic fly-bywire engine control system
which incorporates plug-in key
diagnosis was proving a bit
tricky to say the least.
Slippery customer
One diagnosis that proved
somewhat easier - although
with a surprising result - was
the overheating problem being
experienced by the yacht ‘Layla.’
Cause of the problem?
This 6 inch eel was trapped
between the seawater inlet and
the filter.
Sadly, its life was at an end
due to the rather hot water it
had found itself in.

We are delighted to announce

We came into 2004 with
doom and gloom forecasted
about interest rate rises and
the housing boom coming
to a halt.
These have so far come to
nothing in the yachting market.

Fusion Cuben Fibre.
Fusion ‘m’ is the most advanced yarn-based composite sail
construction in the world. It can be compared to 3DL, Tape Drive
Ultra, 4D and other yarn based systems. Fusion Cuben Fibre
enters into another realm of composite construction entirely.
It moves beyond fibre bundles (yarns) into the micro world of
monofilaments. Fusion Cuben Fibre represents the absolute state
of the art in composite sail construction for sails not made on a
sail-by-sail basis. The downside to Cuben Fibre is cost. Its
sophistication and complexity means it simply cannot be currently
produced on a cost effective basis with yarn based systems. It is
also very difficult to work with, it requires extensive experience
and engineering. The real advantage is in applications that
demand high fibre density (ie - high load sails).
Fusion Cuben Fibre is a big boat product.
CF laminates use unidirectional prepreg tapes of in-line plasma
treated extended chain polymer fibers, and carbon, spread to
monofilament levels on polyester and other unique films. The
beauty of the CF process is that it involves neither twisted filaments
nor weaves. This reduces 'creep' and 'crimp' to levels undetectable
with standard testing equipment.
The result is superior sail shape holding ability. CF sails are
much lighter and have many times the life and the damage
tolerance of the best, similarly performing substitutes.
CF is much thinner than other laminates and retains strength
during repeated flexing. Competing Aramid and Carbon laminates
lose nearly 80% of their strength after being folded 250 times,
while CF retains nearly 100% of its original properties.

Further to the success of

The second leg of the ‘Around Britain’ finished
at Milford Haven and before the third leg began,
the yachts were able to compete in the prestigious
Cork Racing Week - where again the weather was
far from ideal.

The motorboat assisted passage/rally to
Holland, Belgium and France in July was a great
success with decent weather at last. The object
was to give skippers the confidence to take their
vessels abroad independently and everyone
enjoyed crossing the North Sea, negotiating the
Dutch locks and motoring through the enchanting
inland waterways. We hope to repeat this cruise
next year.

2004 - busier than ever
the Channel Islands and many
European destinations.
The 2004 season has been
extremely hectic with students
attending our practical and shorebased courses. Student own boat
tuition has also played a large part
in our busy programme. Students
are becoming more aware that
formal tuition and safety training is
of paramount importance due to
the waterways becoming more busy
than ever over the last few years.
In our demanding schedule we
were chosen again this year to give
formal training to the coxwains of
the Harwich Pilot boats together
with the Caister lifeboatmen in
order for them to comply with the
regulations required by the MCA.

It is particularly encouraging to
see that EASS’s tuition is being
recognised from much further
afield than the UK. During the
summer months, Peter Smith was
flown out to Geneva to give RYA
Powerboat tuition. Other serious
interest has generated from Malta,
Corporate sailing days are also on
the increase with more companies
choosing to build sailing into their
team building and management
development structures. These
events are designed to integrate
company’s specific requirements
into a day’s sailing, allowing the
participants to experience and
enjoy all the fun of being on the
water with our qualified RYA
instructors. It has been widely
accepted that corporate sailing
days are beneficial to employees
and managers, all helping to
contribute to a more eficient
working environment.
Our ‘Around Britain’ cruise and
Yachtmaster Ocean passage was
held during June and July but the
weather was seriously unseasonal
with high winds, rain and very little
sunshine.
Even so, all who took part
commented on how much they
had enjoyed the experience.
Throughout the coming autumn, winter and
spring we will be holding numerous RYA
navigational and shorebased courses in readiness
for next season. Additional survival and first aid
courses will be included into the programme for
sailors racing in the 2005 Fastnet. All three of our
Beneteau 33.7 yachts will be taking part in this
classic from the Isle of Wight, round the Fastnet
rock off southern Ireland - and back to Plymouth
leaving the Scillies to starboard. This package will
include First Aid, Survival and race training. Dates
are 13-20 August 2005 - so let us know soon if
you would like to go. We are also planning several
sailing trips to Holland and Belgium - a great way
to gain mileage towards a higher qualification.
Excel again
We will also be at the 2005 London Boat Show
at EXCEL (6-16 Jan ) and this will be a great
opportunity for you to chat to our instructors on
all aspects of RYA shorebased and practical
tuition. See you there!

Our activities include:
• Keelboat sailing from SYH in our 5 squibs two evenings a week April to September
• A training programme towards RYA qualifications
• Yacht cruising weekends and a cruising week (mainly for the visually impaired)
• Racing with the squib fleet of the Haven Ports Yacht Club
In July, four yachts skippered by volunteers and crewed by sighted and visually impaired
members, embarked on a one week East-coast cruise visiting a number of anchorages including
Walton Backwaters, Brightlingsea and Bradwell. The number of yachts taking part was a little
disappointing compared to previous years and not all those who expressed an interest could be
offered a berth. However, it was enjoyed by all who took part. Two introductory weekends,
in June and September, also enabled a number of visually impaired people to get afloat.
The keelboat sailing draws to a close on 15th Sept after another successful season with an
average of 4 disabled sailors having sailed on 39 out of a possible 44 evenings. One of our
sailors who attained an RYA Level 2 certificate last year has become a keelboat skipper and
she joins the ranks of helpers. Another of our disabled members has bought his own yacht,
RADIUS II, which he is making available for EAST use.
We are grateful to SYH for minimising disruption during the marina extension work and
their continued support for EAST.
We could not operate without the skippers, who offer the use of their yachts for the
cruising and our team of able-bodied helpers and are always looking for more skippers and
